pathologic 3 save & sound 2024 presentation
this is a quick attempt at a transcript of the presentation. I think I got most of it but there are some words I was unable to hear, I can't say I have a lot of practice doing this and that's on me so if any of you guys can help me I'll edit it asap

Ressa Schwarzwald: I'm Ressa from Gameowdio. Our team has been working on Pathologic 3 with Vasily Kashnikov and his apprentice Nikolai. This video will feature some of the audio stuff we've made together.
Our goal regarding audio direction was to give the real experience of being in the epicenter of an epidemic. Fully realistic, no bullshit. So we are obviously shooting this video in The Town. We realized pretty early that the game was quite different from the original Pathologic 2 because of the time travel mechanics. So for the prototype we built a time travel machine [the date November 1924 shows on screen], which appeared to be quite useful to record some source sounds, and [date changes to November 3024] make this video in just half a second using existing technology.
Let's start with the music.

Vasily Kashnikov: Hi, I'm Vasily Kashnikov, audio director of Pathologic 3 project. I'll tell you how our music is structured. We were already thinking about how the Bachelor's game would sound when we were working on Patholgic 2 and writing music for Haruspex. In Pathologic 2, the music had more ethnic and real motives (motifs?) and instruments. Since the city and its customs are familiar with Haruspex since he was a child, he is involved in the traditional way of life. In the case of Pathologic 3, this is the view of an outsider who evaluates everything from the point of view of rationality and science. Therefore, we are trying to make the Pathologic 3 soundtrack colder and more detached from the steppes and ethnicity in character. There is more synthesis, guitars at the same time, the Bachelor communicates with those in power so the soundtrack contains a large share of minimalist so-called furniture music that could sound in the beginning of the last century. Piano etudes and references to composers of that time: Satie, Debussy, etc. The soundtrack is a rather eclectic mix of dreampop, downtempo, and (?) minimalism.

In the city when the Bachelor is alone with himself, we emphasize the cold mind of the rhythm section: less emotional harmony, and sometimes electronic timbres. In the rooms where we need to separate the main character from those he interacts with, we use more expressive harmonies and more classical instruments: piano and guitar passages.
When we designed the interactive music system, we assumed that time is finite, and the music had to change depending on the amount of time the Bachelor had left. However, we later abandoned this system and now the music changes depending on the state of the Bachelor himself, who can fall into apathy or psychosis. To emphasize these states, we apply filters and effects to different layers of our tracks and get a slower, muffled sound in the case of apathy, and wired (?) nervous, glitchy in the case of psychosis. In the infected quarters, there are interactive systems that... [screen begins to distort] oh my god, Nataliya! Please stop this!
Nataliya Radina: Whoops, hehe, sorry. But yeah, basically the other system we created reflects everything you hear in the game. Such as... If we use our gun when dealing with the local thugs, the longer we aim the weapon at the people, the less sounds of the outside world we hear and the louder becomes the heartbeat. To add to the intensity, sharper tone was used along with a high pitch tinnitus sound. If the psychosis level goes to the maximum, it starts to damage Bachelor's health, which is accompanied by flashes on the screen, as well as low heartbeat and short breathing sounds.

Vasily Kashnikov: In the infected and rebel's quarters, there are also interactive systems that change the character of the music by adding or disabling instrument layers depending on the state of the world or the Bachelor's equipment to fight the plague. As a result, we have 12 tracks for each day spent in the city. they can freely switch between each other and several dozen themes for locations and characters, and all the music is subject to change depending on the state of the Bachelor.

Nataliya Radina: Since the game has a weather changing system, we also wanted to reflect that in our audio feedback as well. The game has global wetness parameter that shows how intense the rain is. The more it rains, the more squishy and muddy are the steps of the outside surfaces. Moreover, if you come closer to the window, you can hear the rain pondering on the glass. Even in the middle of the plague, we always have room for cozy moments, right? My favorite part of that system is involving cows. [cow moo]. So, when it's raining, you can actually hear very very soft sound of raindrops dropping on those bovine butts. And I personally think it's beautiful.
Artur Ramanouski: Hi, my name is Artur, and I was also involved in creating some sound assets for the game.

Probably the hardest thing to record were the footsteps. I had everything planned out: bought the equipment, got every type of surface, but...there was one small thing I overlooked: I live in a city with over 12 million people. Noise everywhere. The solution was simple and ingenious: I recorded everything on a Sunday, because in Buenos Ares, Sunday is the one day when no one does anything.

Nataliya Radina: One of the most important places in the game is the cathedral. There we have a system of ladders that control the speed and direction of time. Direction wise, we can have it flow normally, or reversed. [entire presentation is rewound very quickly so it's back to Ressa]
Ressa Schwarzwald: She is super professional.
Nataliya Radina: As for the speed, we can make it stand still, go twice as fast, or half normal speed. We created an audio system that has to (?) understand what is actually happening around (inaudible). When we reverse time, spatial effects are added to the surrounding sounds. Ambience, steps, and the mechanism itself. When time stands still, we increase the low frequencies in the ambience, and all the other sounds are muted to zero. Now lastly, when the time goes twice as fast, or half the original speed, the pitch of the surrounding sound changes accordingly.
The coolest part of this system is that it's been actually implemented into the game engine using only one parameter.

"It is not possible to walk away from such things unscarred, to keep living when the universe dies around you..." it's my single favorite quote from Sion and I think it's because it made me realize the motif of trauma. Most major characters in KOTOR II experience an extremely traumatic event in their lifetime. Hanharr can't handle owing a lifedebt to Mira and goes insane. Bao-Dur still feels immense guilt over his activation of the Mass Shadow Generator. Same with Atton and his guilt over being an assassin. Sion was defeated in battle, literally dying. Visas had her planet destroyed by Nihilus, who in turn was murdered by the Mass Shadow Generator. Kreia was exiled and eventually betrayed by her sith apprentices. Even though G0-T0 is a droid, his purpose is to fix the mass trauma of an entire civilization. Lastly, Meetra Surik (or just the exile) cut off from the force to survive the stress of the Mass Shadow Generator. As an exception, I'd say Disciple and Handmaiden don't necessarily have personal trauma but this is because they are introduced to the exile as a novice and will grow alongside you and reflect your decisions. The entire galaxy underwent trauma in the Mandalorian wars, and the story of KOTOR II is how react to your own trauma, the trauma of your companions, and ultimately the trauma of the republic.

I see the light side and dark side choices in game as the way you dealt with your trauma and how you help others through theirs, rather than explicit rejections or embraces of Jedi/Sith teachings. After all, you aren't even a member of the Jedi Order anymore and you left a long time ago because you didn't agree with them. Think about it like the restoration project on Telos, but with the emotional and mental health of every character in the game. When Sion tells you that nobody could walk away from such things "unscarred" its up to you whether or not that's even true. Do you walk the path of the light side and find redemption/healing through community, altruism, and self sacrifice? Or do you walk the path of the dark side: hardening yourself for protection and seeking power at the expense of others' wellbeing? Sion and Nihilus chose the latter and take take the idea to its apex. Neither can survive without the force and they are restricted by their relationship to it. Kreia makes a point to say that Nihilus does not know true power as he cannot control himself, or his abilities. He is completely beholden to a primal urge to feed. Sion loses to you in the very clip because you have the stronger will. While they survived their trauma, they are weaker because they never healed. They are "scarred" as Sion says.

Kreia offers a third way, based off your own survival at Malachor. Reliance upon the self, upon willpower and strength of mind is the only way to survive. After all, you did survive Malachor not because of your connection to the force, but because you were strong without it. It is the synthesis of Sith and Jedi ideas, which she combined after spending time as a great master of both orders. But is this a true way to heal from trauma? It may never be possible to heal from trauma, but look at how far your companions come and only after YOU took the time to influence them. They are strong on their own, surviving years on dangerous planets or designing weapons that bring armies to their knees, but through their connection to YOU, to a community, they unlock their true potential.

aaa thank you! a quick summary of their concept (spoilers for the HSS propogation quests and Penacony storyline!):
Ruan Mei pushing against the boundaries of genetic engineering again, practicing her work at DNA replication and gene synthesis before perfecting it fully to continue her project with Tazzyronth. She teams with one Dr. Veritas Ratio in workshopping a method of short-term life forms that would age rapidly, to study the process of decay and growth in order to tweak it in later tests down the line.
The life forms in question? intelligent organisms born from meshing genetic sequences from material donated (or subtly stolen in some way). The test subjects are cultivated, given a strict curriculum, an extensive wealth of online and archived knowledge to learn from and test their talents. TLDR: we made fankid love children from characters in HSR.

- This kid’s defining, persistent curiosity stems from both parents. Combine it with Ruan Mei’s connections to the organic, with Ratio’s more clinical perspectives of logic into a physical sense: faux flora, paper flowers, and a wistful wanderlust
- They want to see the world outside their ivory tower of academia, and to learn first hand about the universe itself. Excitedly dogs the poor scientists handling everyone’s monitored exams to reply to Gaius’ questions for once- “A test! Answer me!”
- The Little Prince in a tower, having read all the books they own ten times over
- Gaius and Cavae are technically siblings, sharing Dr. Ratio as a donor! they treat each other as such and use nicknames for one another (GaiGai and CaeCae respectively)

- Not much information is disclosed about this subject’s donors. Nothing Ruan Mei could properly obtain from the Xianshou Ten-Lords Commission, at least. Perhaps Apollyon’s dogged determination to both learn everything about their ‘parents’, as well as defy whatever assumptions are made about themselves, are traits passed down altogether
- Very big fan of the legal system. The orderly process of a court trial is appealing to them. They’ve also thrown themselves into the law to subvert Dan Feng and Yingxing/Blade’s history of criminal notoriety
- Technically the oldest, but not the *eldest*. Because of their Vidyahara genetics, he still has a baby face (gets teased for it). The subjects all still age faster than normal though

- Calm, collected, with connections throughout the Herta Space Station and beyond. Belphie even has routine ‘storyboarding’ sessions with Madame Herta and her Genius coworkers. Their secret contributions to the flavor text of the Simulated Universe help weave the story into a cohesive narrative, tricks the AI into believing the fabrication more easily
- Also has game nights with a slippery hacker online. They trade the #1 spot for the universal high score of Puyo Puyo Tetris III Deluxe Online (sponsored by the IPC’s entertainment branch)

- Mateo has a fair amount of information about his donors. No matter how many files he can access to read about them, though, he still craves a true connection. He doesn’t just want donors— he wants parents. Maybe that Curio he swiped from Herta’s collection could be his ticket off the station?
- Headstrong, steadfast, impatient, and honest. Desperately wants to prove himself through acts of valor and impulse snap decisions to help others. His heart’s in the right place
- the Curio he swiped? turns into a biplane. when not in flight mode? turns into a JETPACKKKKKKK YEAAHH BABY

MISC. INFO: ( Bullshit // Braindump)
- Mateo and Gaius first met each other while Mateo was testing his Curio’s jetpack function outside the HSS. Gaius saw him through the window, enthusiastically wrote notes on big slats of paper to communicate, and they were stuck by the hip ever since
- Cavae has a habit of self-isolation and social withdrawal when having emotional struggles. They drown themselves in their inventions without any time to bond with the others. The other kids have tried to reach through to them, Gaius and Apollyon especially, but the only progress made is when Cavae does it themselves
- Apollyon loves to put on mock trials. Belphagor and Gaius, the most skilled writers in the group, often create theater performances or fake court trials for Apollyon to play the Prosecutor for. Cavae contributed the props and stage tech, with Gaius and Mateo playing as secondary roles. Mateo often gets put as the Judge so he can have a fake beard (but he puts on the best show as the convict)
- Gaius is skilled at origami
- Belphagor is on the most amicable terms with Ruan Mei. Mostly because, out of all the subjects, they’re the one most willing to *accept* being a test subject. Thus they hold no hard feelings towards Ruan Mei about the experiment they’re born from
- Ratio has a check-up scheduled to interview his subjects coming up. The reminder got sent in the mail, though a particularly nosy merchant may have rummaged through his deliveries while the good Doc was running a bath.

Semi masturbatory caffeinated ramble reflecting on skills acquired in my PhD
Thinking about how broad and interdisciplinary my project is and the kinda of things I have to be familiar with or an expert in. I get down on myself sometimes for progress but looking at all the shit I've learned.... Without formal classes or a senior grad student or (for the majority of it) no post doc. And a PI who can't help bc she's really a business lady at this point not a professor. Maybe shouldn't be hard on myself?
Like. I did completely different projects in undergrad (biotech/proteins/genetics/regenerative medicine, advanced manufacturing/composite fabrication/CNC/welding/process statistics, translational neuropharma studies of addiction/rodent handling and operant training and behavioral video analysis/neural tissue slicing n staining/hand making neuroelectrodes for implantation, design and fabrication of impedance spectroscopy based electrochemical sensors/automation of sensor fab and use w a micro fluidic flow cell)
Like. Since I've started I've learned:
- how to do multi-step air-free water-free chemical synthesis (with glove box and schlenk line) and purification (extraction, filtration, chromatography) of light sensitive amphiphiles (extra tricky)
- how to get and read NMR even for massive fucking molecules and interpret weird peaks (I can casually see if I've got water or any of my common solvents contaminating the spectra without referencing a table at this point)
-how to fucking take down and set up and fix everything in our chemical synthesis lab (because we moved and all our shit was abused for years) and all the intricate non-unified and sometimes conflicting rules for hazardous chemical storage
- the theory/math and how to actually use the equipment to do optoelectronic/photophysical characterization (e.g. using the UV vis spectrometer and writing python to convert the data files into readable tables and figures, learning theory so I can develop equations to relate photon flux to change in absorbance of an actinometer ((light sensitive molecule with a consistent quantum yield)) then obtain quantum yield of charge transfer in a different molecule but same setup, how to use the fluorimeter and get intensity and quantum yield, how to set up lasers and LEDs, what cuvettes to use, how to get fluorescence lifetimes or take two photon excitation data, how to spin coat wafers n do thin film transistor studies), more theory about how photo induced electron transfer voltage sensors work and the importance of angle of insertion on sensitivity (and how to measure it with polarization microscopy) other voltage sensing dye mechanisms like FRET or electrochromic dyes and why to use intensity vs lifetime vs whatever when interpreting signal readouts and the extrinsic and intrinsic factors affecting that interpretation.
- how to do vesicle fabrication and immobilize for imaging, typical membrane compositions and dynamics (e.g. phase orders depending on cholesterol concentrations, significance of packing parameters to membrane organization), measurimg particle radius with DLS, controlling inner cargo and gradients over a membrane by manipulating the bulk solution, the interplay between non radiative decay and the stiffness of the membrane microenvironment around a fluorophore
- the math and bio behind electrophysiology/advanced neuroscience pertaining to modeling and calculating and quantifying signalling/equivalent RC circuit analysis, what spatiotemporal requirements there are for studying this shit <- though this was through a class, not self taught
- I already had cell culture experience and did some adherent and suspended cultures, some live dead imaging assays, etc, but I've learned new facets like how to go about picking electrically exciteable lines (ease of growing? What media requirements? time to multiply and differentiate? What agent to differentiate? How to induce firing without a patch clamp?) and troubleshooting uptake/optimizing staining and imaging parameters (what media or buffer for growth vs staining vs washing vs imaging? Can it have serum? Can it have calcium and magnesium? What salts, how is it buffered, whats the osmolarity I can get away with? What concentrations work for what # of cells? What dilution factors? Do I need to admix equivolumes of dye solution and cell solution? Do I prep the organic solvent+ dye + aqueous solution with sonication or filtration or vortexing before mixing? Is DMSO or ethanol or DMF a better organic for dispersal or biocompatibility? What's the Ideal incubation time for uptake and viability? How long before I absolutely need to image or the dye gets internalized? If it's retained long, how many days could I image for?) for my tricky aggregation-prone non-diffusive thermodynamically-partitioned dye. Also stuff like what commercially available live imaging dyes can I compare to or complement my visualizations with or use for colocalization studies (other lipophilic membrane dyes that insert in the bilayer with preferences for diff order regions? What about comparison with surface adhering dyes like WGA-iFluor that bind surface sugars, to show that our dye can laterally diffuse to areas blocked by cell-cell contacts?), what fluorescence specific parameters do I need to characterize (photo toxicity/photo bleaching time?)
And then there's other shit I've picked up like. Idk. How to make orders in the particular institute I'm in. Better citation managers and ways to search literature. Recognizing what groups and journals and conferences are major players in the fields I'm touching. Getting comfy presenting my shit.
I need to learn a little more about microscopy (especially FLIM and how to build a polarizer module into the scope we have for polarization microscopy), and a little more about the state of the art for voltage dyes and live-imaging dye characterization but man. I think I'm getting somewhere. I'm starting to know enough to see the end of this project and pick my directions moving forward and argue when my PI is wrong

❔️Q: Story division? Vocal synth division?
A: Yes! Project CORALINE was originally founded for the purpose of promoting the founder's original story, Reliving Dead Memories, which has been in the works since 2015. While this is still partially the case, it has since expanded.
The vocal synthesis division has now been expanded with the purpose of helping others in the vocal synthesis sphere, by providing them a way to both publish and make their own vocal libraries! We offer the resources and funding to help make new ones possible.
However, we feel the need to state that we will not own any vocal synths, as we are primarily just a publisher now! The creator and voicer still retain full rights to their libraries, and are free to leave whenever they see fit. No one is forcing them to stay under us! The only vocal libraries that really count as being Project CORALINE property at the time of writing this are Sahimura Korarin, Ignatius Kadin and Mahalia Paz Kadin. Flora has zero say regarding voice banks that they have not created directly.
