I just read your fic with Joshua and Artur and it made me really excited to see a fan of this pairing! Joshua has been my fave for the past 5 years and I’m just still obsessed.

I was curious as to what you think arturs intial reaction to him being king would be. I still think it’s a shame we don’t get anyone’s real reaction so I’m curious!

thank you for the ask! i do actually have thoughts about artur's reaction to all this that i'd been meaning to write up... it's a bit messy but i hope you enjoy!

the whole camp is shaken by the news. they're used to having royalty around, but this is different. a secret revealed, and the death of ismaire to mourn on top of it. few people talk to joshua right away, but everyone is talking about him.

artur falls a little aside of all of this gossipy concern, but he has his own worries. "lute," he says, half-panicked, sitting on the floor of her tent, "i've been... i've been slinging spells at the prince of jehanna."

lute blinks at him. "so?"

"so? so--what if i had injured him? i can't have that on my hands! can you imagine the amount of trouble i would be in?"

she goes back to the beetle she's poking around on the dirt floor. "probably not much, since he asked you to."

"i know," he complains, "but..." he trails off with a sigh. lute is right, as she usually is when it comes to matters of practicality. "it just doesn't feel right. royals aren't supposed to associate with commoners, not so casually."

"you're the only one who thinks that." she prods the bug a little farther, carefully preventing its escape without hurting it. "but," she adds, clearly an afterthought, "that's still his fault. he should have told you."

artur goes a little quiet at that. he does wonder about it, if there's a world where joshua would have trusted him enough to share his secret in confidence. now he'll never have the chance to know. it's hard to blame joshua for that, not when they've both just had this ripped away from them.

"i feel bad for him," artur says quietly, "having his personal business aired out like that. i don't even know why he left." he pauses, watching how the sunlight filters through the thin cloth of the tent. "i hope he's alright."

lute looks at him again, like he's missing something incredibly obvious. "go find out, then." she stops one last time, quite pensive. "you can give him the beetle if you want."

"ah--i don't think that will be necessary." he scrambles to his feet, giving the bug a wide berth. "i'll go look for him, though. thanks, lute."

Holy fuck. That would be a whole ass PARTY, wouldn't it? You'd be surprised to learn just how many friends Nnoitra actually had. Some were "closer" friends than others. All of them were quite different. The only thing they ALL had in common was that they treated him nicely. Whether or not Nnoitra treated them nicely... That was up for debate. At least there had to be something about him that they liked, seeing as they kept hanging out with him. He had never thought about inviting them all over at the same time. It would be a long invite list...

These were people he'd known for a good while, OR he'd spent so much time with that he considered them friends of his. He could expand this list to include more people too. People who he hadn't spent that much time with, but who'd been friendly with him, and who he might become friends with, in time. You say that about Bucky like that, but... 😏 I specified a questionmark at that notation for a very good reason, which is to say that he might come across as someone who could be Trickster-chosen in future buttttt his actual calling is something else entirely. Something very dark night of the soul for him, which I might dig into because I have a visual for that.

Rosie as Love-chosen made sense to me once I sat with that a minute. So much of what Rosie does in-show comes from love. He shows up for people, makes them feel at ease, all of that... and it's different from how we've seen Love-chosen in this AU so far, which makes it fun!

Benny not being god-chosen really comes from the fact that I was archly told "I'm not putting myself through being chosen by anybody for any damn thing, thanks". He thinks it's a hassle and he's not putting himself through that, no ma'am. 😂

There being no War-chosen here checks out, though perhaps she might show up... when we least want her to.

Tender Morsels by Margo Lanagan was a very interesting read if you like dark fairytales. Inspired loosely by "Snow White and Rose Red", which is a fairly underrepresented tale as they go and she has an interesting take on it. About the life of a poor, abused girl who manufactures her own fairy tale without considering the consequences. Also, men in bearskins, sympathetic witchcraft, and the agonies of motherhood. I can't tell if I would thoroughly recommend it or not, but it was incredibly interesting and the author has a very compelling way with words-- I can't place exactly what compels me so much about it, but there's a certain bloodiness I find appealing. Please mind the trigger warnings for this book-- would be happy to give a list if DMed or asked. I could describe it as a lighter, more spatially-complex partner read to Otessa Moshfegh's Lapvona. Great to read on a cold winter's night.

The Last Tale of the Flower Bride by Roshani Chokshi is delightful. It's like Bluebeard but if Bluebeard was a beautiful and insane Asian woman. A man realizes his wife is not who she says she is and works to unravel the past she refuses to let him ask about. If you grew up on fairytales this is for you because the patterns, motifs, cycles, and superstitions shown will scratch your brain like no other. It's written in an incredibly lush sort of style that just blankets your brain the same way humidity does on a hot summer night. The twist is predictable but no less satisfying and horrifying for what it is. I found this to be exactly the kind of book I hoped it'd be. To me, a hot and sticky summer evening kind of read, when everything feels so beautiful you feel like you're hallucinating.

The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue (and related books) by Mackenzi Lee is my current favorite YA light read. It's a silly romp through Victorian England following the aristocratic Montague siblings and their various escapades all over Europe as they chase their respective dreams. Monty is clearly my favorite (I love a short idiot bisexual guy) but I think the author does a great job of fleshing out each of the trilogy's protagonists despite the fact that Monty is also very clearly her favorite as well. It deploys magical realism with a pleasingly light hand, has an endearing sense of humor, and has a lot of heart. It's not that deep and doesn't need to be. It's just exactly what you want all YA of that type to be. Perfect for a beach read.

In the House in the Dark of the Woods by Laird Hunt is insane. It's another fairytale-styled novel (I've been on a bit of a kick lately) but the narrative is insanely dense and the semi-whimsical narrative voice is an absolutely bonkers contrast to how convoluted and dark the plot is. It's set in colonial America and focuses on a housewife trying to break her own day-to-day dullness by venturing into the woods surrounding her husband's house. I read this a bit ago and there are many images and motifs that still live rent free in my head. If this book was a color it'd be a deep green so rich and dark it'd be almost black. It is so dense and chewy and has so many tantalizing little details and edges of other stories that you keep wanting to pull on, but the main narrative is so convoluted and tense that you have no other choice but to stay on the path. A good fall book in front of a fire.
