Another James Somerton lie that's super egregious to me is his lying about Janelle Monáe having to come out of the closet when Pynk came out because "Everyone got confused and thought the song was a girl power anthem when it was really Janelle's coming out song." and making a big deal about erasure and what not but it's like A. None of that is true the second that music video came out everybody and they mama said, "Janelle Monáe gay?????????????????" That was the primary reading of the music video, and it's very well-documented B. It could be argued that the music is somewhat of a "girl power" anthem too and I doubt Janelle would have an issue with that interpretation given that Pynk has a very "owning your sexuality and taking up space" message. C. Funny that James Somerton would make such an impassioned defense of an artist being "forced" to come out because he literally lied on a bisexual writer who was forced to come out after people assumed that she was some gross straight woman obsessed with gay men. James, who supposedly did alllllllll this research, lumped that author in with the "Straight woman who writes gay men's stories." in his video and proceeded to get pissy with her when she left a pretty mild comment of "Hey, after a whole harassment campaign against me forcing me to come out of the closet it kinda sucks that people are still calling me straight." Then, after very gently being called out over him erasing her sexuality to fit his narrative, he proceeded to omit the title of that author's work in his later videos and make up a lie about her being mean to him on Twitter when his audience questioned him on it. LITERALLY TALKIN OUTTA BOTH SIDES OF HIS MOUTH

This whole situation reminds me of a TikTok creator who's been called out for stealing from Black women all the time and how every time it's brought up, it's met with silence. Once, He just straight-up read out a Black trans femme's tweets without properly crediting her or asking her for permission to use her work. Making the excuse of "Well, I screenshotted the tweets and put them on the screen so..." then his fans spent days bashing her for calling him out on using the work of other creators without asking and making fun of her for having a donation up which I don't think he ever addressed outside of the occasional stray comment.

This way of "building a progressive brand" through stealing the work of marginalized writers is actually common in left circles and academia and has been an issue, particularly for Black trans femme essayists, for a while. Black MaGes (people of marginalized genders) will come out and say, "Hey! This really popular essayist ripped me off word for word bar for bar" and get paid dust because their platform isn't large enough to speak out and because their platforms are smaller, people are less inclined to care when they get ripped off. Like, it's easy for us to point at James and say, "Omg? How could he get away with stealing this much for so long?" when the answer is simple, nobody cares what you have to say if you don't have a big platform, thus nobody cares if you get stolen from and unfortunately, we're all complicit. Look at how much this situation has blown up just because a super-popular guy brought it up. If Hbomb and Todd in the shadows didn't speak on this story and these small creators made a bigger stink about James biting their shit, yall would have ignored them at best or crucified them and accused them of trying to tear down the body of work of a gay man and probably throw in something about them secretly being a kiwi farms troll trying to sew discord in the community (I know how yall get down...) at worst. To address this issue more substantially, WE have to be better about learning slowly and taking time to pour over materials ourselves and not fall into the trap of letting whatever video essayist we like the best at the moment shape how we think and feel about whatever topic they're covering. Ismatu Gwendolyn and their threadings essays on substack have really helped me personally start removing myself from the "quick learner" rat race and the need to digest as much information as possible that video essays fulfill and reintroduced me to learning slowly and with intention and reading sources for myself first without depending on the thoughts and feelings of a creator I like and agree with to color my view of things. If we work towards getting used to treating video essayists like essayists and not our parasocial besties being our beginning and end to learning on a topic, we can A. Mitigate the amount of misinformation and plagiarized work circulating by being able to identify them easier and B. Improve our personal relationship to learning so we don't have to rely on some stranger with "bisexual lighting" to make us feel smart.

apologies if you’ve answered this before or if there’s not really a specific gathered resource, but you seem knowledgeable about such things!— i am interested in learning more about f1 racing, do you have any recommendation for where to find a beginners guide/‘f1 for dummies’/place to begin learning more?

hello!!! i am also rather new to the sport and had to consume massive amounts of content from all over the place and frankly am still learning a lot all the time, so i'm not exactly an expert. what i can share are resources i relied on in my own ✨ descent into madness ✨ though !

so, my incomplete and questionable guide to selling your soul to f1:

it's all about how you like to learn and consume media tbh. i tried to watch a race initially, was confused, regrouped and started exploring. personally i watched all of dts up to the current season and then watched the first few races that i had missed while obsessively trawling twitter to learn more and waiting for my first live race (aka australia this year — massive rip). but it's up to you how you dive in!!

drive to survive

don’t get me wrong, dts has its issues — they invent drama, have some misleading portrayals, like to splice together clips from different race weekends together. it’s definitely more of a creative project than a straight up documentary. 

that being said, it also explains a lot of the lore and history behind the sport, teams, and drivers in an entertaining fashion. it’s newcomer friendly so it explains the rules. yes, will buxton gets a lot of heat for stating the obvious, but some of those obvious explanations are helpful for the clueless. 

there are also a lot of very cool shots and some good exclusive interviews that they get. sure, you can probably find them clipped on youtube, but may as well just watch dts. the first season is a little slow if you’re like me and want to see charles immediately (worth noting not all teams had agreed to participate s1), but that’s just me. 

(plus: it’s entertaining. i live for drama. just take said drama with a grain of salt and assume it’s probably invented or blown out of proportion.) 

the tiktok girlies 

again: tiktok can be a bit hit or miss. you’ll see a lot of bad takes and pure cringe if you linger too long on f1 tiktok. but i started watching content from a few f1 girlies who seems reliable and had friendly introductory content. they’re generally very nice and happy to answer questions. 

after a while i stopped watching them just because i no longer needed the intro information or explanations, but they did help fill in gaps and point out some of the inaccuracies of dts.

f1tv content 

i am pretty sure f1tv isn’t available in all countries, but i have always watched races through f1tv. there are a lot of ways to watch races live illicitly if that’s what you prefer, and other countries have sky or other channels they can watch on (USA also has espn), but i prefer f1tv because i’m too lazy to find streams and don’t want to worry about stream issues mid race. 

plus: f1tv comes with a whole archive of past seasons and a host of other media content during race weekends (ie, the fia press conferences on thursday, post-quali and post-race). they have a tech talk series that explains some of the technical aspects, do weekend warm-ups each race weekend that gives an update/context, and have been adding more intro content on the platform. there’s an app, which is convenient. 

the f1tv stream also allows you to use the channel switcher to choose between your commentary options (f1tv or sky’s commentators), or to see the live timing data, or to see any of the driver onboards. it’s quick and you can switch back and forth easily. (if your computer can handle it — my mac often can’t — you can use multiviewer with your f1tv subscription to set up a bunch of different screens and panels to watch, for example, the main stream and a driver’s onboard. or multiple onboards. or whatever you want basically. personally i usually put the race on my ipad and the onboard on my phone, because that streams perfectly and multiviewer likes to kill my laptop.) 

the downfall of f1tv is that they don’t have a smart tv app yet. idk why. it’s very irritating. it also might be a bit expensive to some, but i think it’s worth it. 

f1 twitter (hell)

it’s a minefield out there. truly. BUT my next big question, after starting to get into watching races live and watching some old seasons and learning how it works, is how people seemed to always be in the know about paddock gossip. i wanted to know about it as it was happening and see the ~drama~ unfold live and feel like i was part of the season actually occurring. 

so: twitter. follow your teams, follow your drivers, the for you tab is actually your friend here because it’ll bring new journalists and f1 commentators into your orbit as you learn who is who. some of the big driver fan pages operate as sources of information and updates with relative stealth if not immediate updating. 

at this point i follow enough people (and have infected my algorithm enough) that i tend to see gossip and updates across most of the teams. big news tends to get shared by everyone anyway. 

if you prefer tumblr, you can still get A Lot of updates on drama and gossip pretty quickly. there is a bit of a delay between information hitting twitter and information hitting tumblr (partially because none of the official teams or drivers have accounts on tumblr; partially because of the amount of people on f1twt versus f1blr). BUT, a lot of us tumblr girlies liveblog during the races and sessions and bring any crucial content over from twitter to share here, so the info will probably be here eventually/soonish. (following the race tags each weekend will prob give you a lot of the quick updates live.)

Do you think Sarah and BB not announcing the next book while the shipwar continues is intentional or not? I’ve seen both arguments and I lean toward not because if i’m correct Sarah doesn’t really get on social media and yes BB would most likely have a media team or someone to help Sarah with marketing but I also feel like the shipwar is mostly within the fandom and not something the average reader would know about and so it might just be “a few bad apples” to someone on a media team or something scrolling through tags not like a full blown issue and not just that but you do have to manually turn on timestamps on posts on tumblr and it’s not always obvious when a tiktok was posted and from experience towards the end of TOG while it wasn’t anything as bad as this with tiktok not being around/popular yet it was the same level of anger and hatred over ships on tumblr like it tends to cycle through toward the end of Sarah’s series where things are wrapping up and all the sudden the fandom is in flames for a while

Honestly I think SJM has a really shit PR/Media team. They have never done a really good job with promoting any of her books and other than the random book signing and instagram live here and there, they're really doing a poor job of capitalizing on the popularity of her books.

In regards to the ship war, I think it only really exists online. Most casual readers ship Elriel or Elucien, and do not have any stake of interest in what is endgame or not. Gwynriel isn't even something that ever comes up, let alone is considered.

I don't think festering the ship war is intentional, as I don't think BB even knows of its existence. Even if it did know, it probably wouldn't know how to use it to their advantage anyways (sorry not sorry). I think the only reason it's taken this long to get the next ACOTAR book out is because SJM was working on CC, her tv show thing (idk if it's even happening still), etc.

If they were trying to be intentional about the ship war, the recent articles that have been published would've hinted at that. But most articles only mentioned Elriel, referring to Lucien as just someone who is her mate who she does not speak to lmao. If you think back to the twilight craze, we allllll knew Bella was going to end up with Edward. But there was still such a big ship war and it was purely just marketing. We had celebrities out here putting #team Jacob on their Twitter bios, teenage girls with full Team Edward merch, and whatnot.

So yeah, long story short, the next ACOTAR is taking a while because SJM is the bottleneck here, not BB trying to prolong some toxic ship war

Paramore Wipe Social Media Accounts Clean + Delete Website + Fans Have No Idea What’s Going On

Paramore have wiped their Instagram and X (formerly Twitter) accounts clean, updated with a blank profile picture. The band's website no longer exists either and fans are confused.

The timing of this latest scrubbing, however, is especially curious as Paramore recently expressed that they're not sure what the future holds for the band or if there even is one.

The Changes to Paramore's Social Media Accounts + Website

Every single post on Paramore's Instagram and X accounts have been deleted and the profile pictures have been changed, showing a stick figure head and torso against a grey background.

Paramore's profile picture on Facebook has been changed to the same image, however their pre-existing posts are all still there, the latest coming on Dec. 17, wishing guitarist Taylor York a happy birthday.

Regarding Paramore's website — paramore.net — that landing page now reads "404 Not Found. The requested URL was not found on this server."

Fans Have No Idea What's Going On

Fans have flocked to the r/Paramore Reddit thread to discuss these latest activities, pondering the significance of these moves in relation to those recent comments about a murky future.

Some claim (as of four hours prior to this post being published) that they were still able to access the website, while others were greeted with a message that read, "Future home of something quite cool."

One fan posits, "I think they're making big 'left the label' moves," while another wondered if Paramore's previous label — Atlantic Records — had managed the social media and webpages and that this is a transitional period for the accounts and site.

Elsewhere, fans urge everyone to remain calm and don't panic, opting to wait this out to see a new announcement will be coming soon.

The new profile picture on Facebook has generated over 11,000 comments with a mixed bag of reactions. There's comments using Paramore lyrics in an ultra dramatic fashion, ones with optimistic outlooks and some that are all doom and gloom.

The Recent Uncertainty of Paramore's Future

On Dec. 14, Paramore posted a quote from their interview with UPROXX in a candid assessment about what's next for the veteran group.

Paramore's Instagram story contained the following note, which is an excerpt from the feature (not a direct quote from the band):

Now that Paramore has spent the year touring behind This Is Why (and making sure to take better care of themselves while they’re at it), a chapter of the band’s career has come to a close. He also posts a lot about tea. Makes reviews of various brands and types and tastes on IG Reels and they're actually quite informative and pleasant to watch. 40 days and 40 nights! We’re inching closer to the premiere and all the beautiful pain and pleasure I’m sure it will serve. Only a few new crumbs in show news this week (oh S4 trailer, where art thou?), but we did get a little something from the entire cast this week.

Riley was featured in Station 19 this week as Capt. Farris the union leader as I’d shared in an earlier blog. I enjoyed his scene, look forward to more in the season finale as he shared on IG!

Hi! Thank you so much for this - really. I've never really been into social media like this. I had a tumblr years ago but didn't post much & I think I used LiveJournal more than anything. I had a short story blow up on reddit years ago, but that's really the only time I've felt like people were really interested in what I have to say. I say all of that to say that stumbling upon the gaylor community has been surreal & I'm shocked when I get messages like this or when one of my friends tells me someone sent them one of my TikToks or Twitter threads.

I have several TikToks I need to make, I just tend to post one or two & then anxiety takes over & I refuse to even open the app. I guess you could say I skip town like an asshole outlaw.

The vast majority of the things I know came from obsessively consuming every piece of gaylor content I could find in a short time frame, so when I compile things or offer a theory or opinion on something, the credit really belongs to the community as a whole. I try to present it in a way that's easy to understand, but that's only possible because of the many amazing, brilliant people who have been here way longer than I have. That may sound like imposter syndrome (and I'm sure some of it is), but I've been part of this for less than a year, and I love and respect the community far too much to act like anything I do here is an independent effort.

That said, the last couple of years have been the hardest of my life & it's hard to articulate how bright messages like this are in that kind of darkness. It means more to me than you'll ever know. I'll force myself to make those TikToks soon. Promise.

14# for the Salty Ask List! What's your unpopular opinion about your fandom(s)?

OKAY SO. (This will be long, TL/DR at the bottom)

First of all, I love league of legends (as you may have guessed from my profile picture) and my unpopular opinion is that it (both the game and the fandom) gets shit on WAY too much. As someone who loves math, figuring out optimal builds is so much fun for me! I love solving puzzles and making rune pages and builds for different characters and then getting to try them out is so much fun for me! Is there a big Shonen anime brand misogyny problem in parts of the fandom? Yes, absolutely. Is it probably a good idea to mute liberally because of rampant toxicity? Also yes. But I've met some great people there too!!! Maybe I'm just incredibly fucking resilient because I've been dunked in some of the deepest strongest acid vats of toxicity and negativity out there (conservative christian upbringing, league of legends, playing riven specifically, Twitter, tiktok, Steven Universe fandom) and am still a ray of sunshine in person, but I actually quite enjoy it. Do I wish it wasn't hilariously broken with a character roster that's very much male dominated? Yes. Is there a misogyny problem even within the character balancing (male OP characters get ignored or buffed while female OP characters get nerfed into the ground)? Yes. But there's so much fun to be had if you know how.

Okay. Second big fandom is Team Fortress 2 and I think that uh. Well to put it kindly I think a lot of them miss the entire point of the game. They basically have sticks up their asses about weapons being "fair and balanced" and while I agree that they should be to a certain extent, I also think focusing on that too much risks losing the spirit of the game. If I wanted an optimized, polished first person shooter, I'd play overwatch. If blizzard could get it's shit together for five fucking seconds and realize it's making some of the worst possible business decisions with the game that is. But anyway back to TF2. If we were to optimize every single weapon to be 100% fair and balanced, we miss the entire point of the game. Like, a vast majority of the game would be gone if that were the case. It's not very fair and balanced to run through a doorway only to get instantly blown up because there were 5 stickybombs there you couldn't see, but removing that would make it not TF2. I think probably the best example of this is the Sandman and Flying Guillotine combo, may she be restored soon. Was it entirely balanced? No. But in my opinion that wasn't a good reason to remove it entirely. Same with the degreaser/reserve shooter combo. Just because they're annoying doesn't mean you get rid of them entirely. Another thing they get too upset about is when someone dare suggest that a niche weapon should be buffed to checks notes fill it's niche better. Take the amputator. It's niche is to provide AoE healing. But the situations where that's handy become uh. Much less frequent thanks to the specific quirks of how it works. You enter a short taunt during which you can't move. I personally feel like it could be better served by some sort of recharging bar and a big movement speed debuff. The other big hindrance is that the damage is a direct downgrade to the stock. The other Melees all provide some sort of combat advantage to stock. The Übersaw has a slower swing speed but greatly increased critical hit chance, which if you ask literally anyone who has played with or against the Übersaw, is a significant understatement. The vita-saw provides a psychological advantage with slightly less health but the knowledge that if you do die, you won't lose all of your Über. And the Amputator is basically the Overwatch experience, trading swing speed for knowledge of the enemy's health. The amputator provides none of this, which makes it pretty shitty as a self-defense tool. It does less damage than stock with no increased swing speed or bleed effect to balance things out. I won't go into a whole bunch of detail about my fixes but I just find it ridiculous the types of things that they say will lead to power creep. The Ambassador used to be able to headshot people from as far away as you could headshot people without a zoom, and it was just accepted as part of the game for the longest time. And I'm supposed to believe that weapons filling their intended purpose is gonna be too powerful? Okay whatever. I doubt hordes of people will be swapping off of Soldier just to hit me to death with a slightly improved bonesaw on the class that has the least combat capacity but apparently it's definitely going to happen if the amputator isn't a direct downgrade to the stock in terms of self-defense!!! Sorry this got long but basically:

League of Legends isn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be and there's a lot of fun to be had if you know how to curate your experience

It’s really wild to see how people consume media differently through the lens of Stranger Things - not even on a ‘who’s right, who’s wrong’ perspective, but just from what people pick up about the show. For example, on Facebook Netflix will post something about Steve having a rough love life and everyone’s like ‘ugh I need him and Nancy to get back together, they are my everything. I don’t care that she’s happily with Jonathan or that they were not great for each other at first. If not with Nancy he deserves a good girl!’ And they’ll show how realistically it could work out for them in the end. Meanwhile, Netflix will pose the same question on TikTok, Twitter, or Tumblr and everyone’s like ‘okay now hear me out...Eddie Munson’ and the crowd goes wild, pointing out hidden glances they shared and showing how it could realistically work for the better of them both. Two paths.

Same thing with Will. It drops that Will is gay and has the hots for Mike and everyone on Facebook and some on Twitter is absolutely shocked, never saw this coming, blown away by the revelation. Meanwhile everyone on the other platforms already have saved files from way back in season 2 of all the times Will was so obviously pining after Mike and vice versa, taking the news as confirmation of their thoughts rather than a new finding. Again, two paths.

I’m wondering what you think about Harry’s public image right now. The way he is seen by the fandom, especially non-het Harries (larries or harries who don’t think he’s straight) and the non-fandom is so strikingly different. I’ve been reading comments on different sites, primarily Reddit and some Twitter/tiktok right now about Harry, and so many are saying he’s queerbaiting. I’ve seen comments that say the only thing interesting about him is the speculation around his sexuality and that’s why he ‘queerbaits’, I’ve seen comments that say without the speculation he would be boring like Shawn Mendes, I’ve seen comments that literally say his outfits are queerbaiting, that he’s straight and playing up the “LGBT” angle for promo. I’ve seen people say that “the straights” eat up Harry’s public image of ambiguity but gay people are tired of it. To me these comments just seem preposterous and almost homophobic. I’m not going to get into a discussion of whether or not real people can queerbait in this ask, but it’s just glaringly obvious to me that Harry isn’t straight but for whatever combination of reasons is not going to fully come out anytime soon, that most likely he enjoys wearing more feminine or out-there outfits and if they also help his promo, that adds to it, and that his public image is carefully crafted to help him maintain a sense of privacy. But that’s how I see it as someone in the fandom. I feel like some people outside of the fandom are getting fed up with him; they’re essentially calling him fake and super calculated. I’m wondering if you think his team should take any steps to mitigate people thinking this way, and what they should do.

So a couple of things - I don't think very on-line queer people discoursing about Harry is his public image. I think it's worth thinking and talking about, but shouldn't be blown out of proportion. I suspect that this group is numerically as small as hard core fans, if not smaller.

I do think the fact that Harry is so vehemently seen as straight by a particular subset of queer people is really interesting. And there are lots of different things you could say (and I was making some of those points earlier).

But generally to me it shows the power of compulsory heterosexuality - the aura that Harry has sex with women is very powerful.

But the question about what Harry and his team should do is a really interesting one. I think it's impossible to answer - because we don't know what the restrictions are (and I think in general 1D fandom is very willing to speculate about what should happen, without thinking about what the restrictions might be).

To me the big question is what is Harry prepared to do, and what is the record label prepared for Harry to do.

It'd be very reasonable if Harry didn't want to talk about his sexuality at all, or only wanted to do it in certain terms. And the record label has invested a lot of money and probably has a very conservative idea of what's needed to protect the fantasy boyfriend audience.

The obvious answer of what Harry could do is to make it just one notch more specific that he was attracted to men. He could have said 'I'm asked about my sexuality more than I should be and I don't want to talk about it directly.' And then covered Charlie XCX's boys (perhaps that would be too many notches, but you get the idea). Or he could have done carpool karaoke with James Corden and James could have said that he was attracted to men and then asked if Harry had ever thought of hooking up with James. There would be options to be explicit that he's attracted to men, without ruffling the fantasy boyfriend audience, and not giving any space for follow up (or even requiring Harry to use words).

But that approach may well be vetoed either by Harry, or people he's working with.

For me the question then becomes - whose advice is Harry taking on this. Because Harry Lambert could give him good advice about how he was seen in queer scenes and how to avoid being seen as queerbaiting. But I don't know if he's in those meetings, or if his influence is restricted to clothes. I'd be worried if Harry was only getting straight people's advice about how to navigate all this.

And one reason I think that might have happened is that we haven't seen the Late Night Talking video yet. Now there are lots of reasons for that (particularly the success of As It Was) so I'm not leaping to conclusions. But one possibility I'm considering at the moment is that the backlash to Harry's comments in Better Home and Gardens took them by surprise, and that there's an attempt to figure out how to mitigate the response in a reactionary sort of way. And that the way they respond to the criticism will be to be less queer. Rather than to be explicit enough in a way that people will understand.

I think it'd be a real shame if that happened (although obviously it's all speculation at this point). And I do think that sort of reactionary response would come from the advice of straight people. But I think it's worth saying that Harry's decision making team does seem to be full of straight people, and that's very much a decision he's made. If he makes decisions based on bad advice because of it, that's ultimately on him.

I've been listening to Mitski since I was like 16 and will now tell you what I think about the Mitski discourse I keep seeing on my dash:

First of all, if you're engaging in any way with a "Mitski fandom" you are doing it wrong. Music is meant to be enjoyed, mutual enjoyment of music is great but holding someone up on a pedestal and treating them like they're not even a human being is hurtful to that person. Everyone is just a guy. This goes both for people who say shit like "Mitski is a CIA agent white supremacist child abuser kidnapper" and hit like and reblog with no double-checking AND for the people who act as if Mitski is an infallible saint. She has even said she doesn't like it, so maybe stop treating her like a god or like someone you know because you truly don't actually know her unless you are her IRL friend. You can argue about the things she has said all day, and think you have the most correct interpretation, but this is the Internet and people's imaginations tend to run wild, so she might look at what you think she thinks based on everything she's said and say "no that's not exactly what I meant". Stop being a Stan and start just being a normal fan. A Mitski enjoyer if you will.

Second of all, remember that social media is literally designed to make you mad and feed you takes you don't agree with. There are always people who are annoying or "wrong" about the meaning of certain songs/music/etc. but giving them more than a passing thought it a waste of your precious time on earth and will only make you stressed. If you see a stupid take, take a deep breath and move on. It's not worth it. Focus on making life better for people IRL.

Thirdly, everyone is really mad about people "misinterpreting" mitski's music to be "not about race". It is about race, obviously, but it's also about other things as well, and to condense her stuff down into "this is only about race and has no other message" is, I think, kind-of patronising and you would never do it to a white artist. Her stuff is about all sorts of things, including some of the highly relatable heartbreaks of life, and to say that it's only about race is stereotyping and pidgeonholing in my opinion. Do not misinterpret me here. I am NOT saying it's not about race. It is. But it is not only about race, and if you think that it is, then you absolutely are contradicting what she has said is her interpretation of her music.

Finally, final point here, you have to question how many people made the original bad take of "mitski's music is not about race" or "your best American girl is only about heartbreak" to deserve this huge tumblr backlash. And also maybe the age of those people. Mitski has massively blown up on tiktok over the past few years, which skews very young, and young teenagers make bad takes all the time. I was very politically engaged as a child, and I would say that I only started becoming fully aware of social issues and forming political opinions I somewhat still agree with aged around 16. I knew about the ones that affected me and didn't think about much else before I met people who had very different life experiences from me. I think that's pretty normal. Sure, if you are literally at the centre of absolutely all vectors of oppression, maybe you're accutely aware of all forms of social issues from a young age, but most people are not. So maybe cut young teenagers some slack by ignoring them. When I was 14, I was not on twitter to be able to have my every stupid, half-baked, ignorant take go viral or prompt an Internet backlash. You are not doing anyone any favours by reacting with mob justice. Least of all Mitski herself, who isn't on social media and can't see the bad takes or your dramatic unpicking of the bad takes.

How do people use the internet still. Opening up tumblr or twitter to find deep amounts of misinformation ranging from ignorance about basic geography or economics to the classic “the media hasn’t reported about [x inflammatory issue]” (which I, a Newspaper Reader, know for a fact isn’t true) has made me pretty pessimistic about the future. If, as it looks to me, everyone gets their news from misleading screenshots on Twitter or Tumblr or some snarky TikToks where some rando talks to you from their bedroom, I really don’t see how we’ll ever escape the hyperreal hellscape of Alternative Facts. Facts aren’t a tool for you to debate with or manipulate towards your cause or identity. Truth has to be the starting point for any meaningful discourse, or we will be forever in the dark.

Having seen people fall into the alt right media ecosystem, it’s always disturbing to see people fall into similar patterns of fact denial, selective media consumption, echo chambers, and conspiratorial thinking (which as of late has caused an “unholy alliance” of left/right accusations about evil Globalists controlling the media—I think it would be good for people to read Adorno and Horkheimer’s argument about antisemitism being the “fool’s socialism”, whereby capital gets tokenized into a convenient racialized scapegoat to be banished by The People).

In this case, it’s not about your specific positions about policy or diplomacy. Specific debates about how the consequences of certain policies can magnify or decrease the risk or intensity or suffering are all well and good. But I am worried about a Manicheanism infecting young people who mean well, which could very well convince them that they are Good, but the ones who oppose them: They are Evil, They are Liars, They Hate You, They Control Everything, They Own Everything, They Must be Destroyed, etc. Such a nihilism—there is no hope, they control everything, we cannot trust anyone except for our own kind, we see apocalypse on the horizon, we must set fire to everything impure—is not conducive to being able to articulate reasonable specific courses of action for optimal outcomes. It is instead the basis for seeing the world in terms of angels and demons. The world may never see peace if the fever of forever revolution took hold such that we no longer wished for a better world, only to win and defeat our enemies, over and over until there is nothing and no one else to purge.

Then the world becomes a script for constant hermeneutics of suspicion. Read between the lines, we would say. Who knows what They are up to. They could be anywhere. It is how Naomi Wolf went from a decently known feminist writer into a full blown antivaxxer. Beware. Fake news is everywhere. The desire to subvert reality and bend it towards a narrative of justice that tickles our fancy is universal. We would do well to do what Naomi Klein did (in her book Doppelganger) instead and really consider if our doppelgangers on the “wrong side” are really any different than us, since I think what is ultimately at play is basic psychology and social interactions, and the consequences could be devastating if we don’t interrogate them. It should terrify more people that the basic truth is harder and harder to find in online conversations.

A.I Art and How It Is Ruining Art as a Whole

A.I. art has recently blown up.. pretty much everywhere. You see accounts on Instagram and Twitter dedicated to sharing these pretty or even funny/silly pieces of art made by an A.I. The A.I art trend on TikTok now that everyone and their great great grandfather are doing it. It's everywhere, and it's kind of scary, actually

I understand that not everyone is using it in a harmful or bad way, some do it recreationally because it is fun to do. It's fun to put my dorky little pieces of art into an ai and then it shows something so laughably bad. it's fun. really fun. but there are also those who use it in a bad way.

Some companies have already started firing their hard-working, talented artists because of A.I which is horrible. There was a huge debate awhile ago that is still brought up sometimes that robots are just stealing people's jobs. I have to admit I can see from a business point of view how it could be good, faster working, endless shifts, and other stuff but is that really worth it to be putting people out of jobs?

Art is such a beautiful thing. From the beginning of time, we have embraced art into our cultures and passed stories through art for decades and decades and decades. Take the Aboriginal Australian Dream Time stories, for instance. They were passed down THROUGH ART. We would never be the humans we are without art. it is human nature to create art and express ourselves through it.

So that's why i find it so immoral that we are slowly letting A.I take over the genre of art. Plus A.I art is kind of odd, like in the uncanny valley. On the surface level it looks fine but if you stare at it for too long you'll start to realise that it's fake, a human didn't make that. Its such a weird and gross feeling. Like finding out a lie you've been told your entire life was well a lie. A pit in your stomach starts to grow because of the feeling.

I think A.I art has it's benefits and I know A.I has brought some great tools for real artists to use but I don't feel like they should be creating art themselves.
