TMNT: Mutant Mayhem is easily the best movie I've seen this year. It's so good! If you're on the fence about seeing it for any reason, please just go watch it

Sci, Mutant Mayhem wasn't THAT good. It was good but-
Changed basically everything about the lore except the fact they are mutant turtles in nyc
Hang on, do you think any of the Spider-Men have been friend with the tmnt?
okay i have no personal stake in the teenage mutant ninja turtles lore whatsoever so i came into it as a novice and i did not expect to like the turtles but came out really liking the turtles so that's the barometer of success to me. i think as a standalone thing without any prior investment in the IP it's really, really solid. like it's a good movie, objectively, on it's own. if teenage mutant ninja turtles didn't exist prior, it's just straight up a good movie. it's a good movie. narratively sound, has a lot of heart, you like all the characters... art direction makes me salivate. i never thought about the turtles before. now i can't stop thinking about them. movie did good job on that front. 👍
i don't know if i'll ever get into the teenage mutant ninja turtles lore but i mean it did what it said on the tin. there were definitely teenage mutant ninja turtles in it. so i got what i was expecting, i think. i wasn't mismarketed.
i think every adaptation of a property SHOULD do something new with it. i don't think an adaptation necessarily owes something to the source material - it owes it to the audience to justify it's own existence as something new. something that exists on it's own, and has a reason to exist, more than just retreading what already exists, y'know, y'know. so i love adaptations that are good on their own. not something to discredit, me don't think!
buuuut i'm sure if i had any personal stake in tmnt i'd have gripes. but maybe not. i love when people do something NEW with spider-man, as long as it's actually good and interesting, and not stupid and bad and soulless. i don't hate on the mcu spider-man adaptation because it's different - i hate on it because it doesn't work, on it's own. there's a reason why the original is effective and the new one isn't. and those reasons go beyond "it's different." miles' story is different, and isn't faithful to the comics exactly, and it's better for it. it's fresh and new. fresh and new is good, sometimes. when something is good, it's good. doesn't have to be faithful. and in fact, being faithful can be a bit of a curse sometimes. it's easy to be faithful. it's more of a challenge to reinterpret something to make it accessible and interesting for new viewers. so! credit to tmnt:mm for that!! sexy of them. so sexy.
i don't think there's a canonical team-up between the turtles and any spider-men - but man, there SHOULD be...

I'd love to hear what fundamental issues you have with spiderverse... 🎤
Hm I'm just gonna rattle off a few from most to least important before I forget (note: some of my issues with spiderverse are less about the concepts or characters themselves but more about how the writers or producers chose to handle them, or even just exploring the possibilities of what could've been. I still think it's a really excellent movie and complex story.)
If you're someone that skims through longer paragraphs a lot, I've also put my most important points in italics so that you get the gist of what I'm saying :)
Making Miles' story about everyone else but Miles. I understand that Miles' whole thing in Spiderverse is that by defying the odds, he inspires the people around him. But there's a certain point where the story become *about that* and the other characters more than him and his interiority. In its efforts to focus on his growing into the mantle of Spider-Man, the films only kind of allude to the fact that he has a life outside of the mask. His mental health and relationship to his community are pushed to the wayside so much that even Ganke is only on-screen for a few minutes at most.
(This is a long one sorry) Spiderverse as a movie doesn't seem to know for sure whether it likes cops or not. It presents the literal police and policing as a concept as something that is inherently neutral, likening it to the mantle of Spider-Man where they simply have power that they have to use responsibly, and that there are just "bad apples". But the way that Spider-Society operates quite closely parallels how policing and criminality work: you have a bunch of spiders go out and detain people and send them where they're "supposed to be" under the guise that a) the order of things will essentially fall apart if you don't, and b) there is a specific way that your story is supposed to go, and you should be willing to sacrifice lives to maintain that status quo. There's also the categorization of those who break those rules as an Other (anomalies), and the fact that Spider Society reacts to the presence of the anomalies instead of addressing the thing that created them (the collider. HELLOOOO). With all that being said, Miguel and the rest of Spider Society are clearly framed as anatgonistic forces by the film and even has a punk anarchist character calling them out and being right about it. The movies simultaneously critique policing metaphorically through Spider Society while trying to justify it in the real world.
Girl where is Pavitr. His character is literally perfect for Miles to interact with, but we don't see him again until the very last scene. Same thing with...literally everyone we just met. The movie is over two hours long, where did all that time go--OH WAIT
Gwen and the scene with her dad take up wayyyy too much of the movie's runtime, I'm sorry. We spent the entirety of the beginning of the film learning information about Gwen and her dad that could've been quickly conveyed in much less time. Not to mention that, apparently, Mr. Stacy literally gets fired in the comics for letting Gwen go, so that whole plotline didn't even need to happen. Why change that? To say he's a 'good cop' that does his job? The trauma of losing Peter would've been present in her story either way.
The art style. No, this doesn't mean what you think it does. I do not have an issue with the 3D and 2D hybrid style of animation obviously. Spiderverse has literally revolutionized the field, but there are some limitations to it that were made especially clear once TMNT:MM came out. You may or may not have noticed, but isn't almost everyone in Spiderverse...kinda gorgeous? Hear me out here. Someone has pointed this out before me, and it really changed the way that I look at aesthetics in animation. In Spiderverse, everything from the environments to the way that things are shaded and colored is extremely stylized and pushed quite far...until you get to the main characters. Yes, there is diversity in features the likes of which we haven't seen 'till recently, but I'm purely talking about the style in which they're drawn. Compared to everything else, they look closer to something Disney or Pixar might produce. This is not inherently problematic or "bad", but I do wonder how much cooler and cutting-edge and comic-y we could get if it wasn't so pre-occupied with beauty. You can disregard this one, it's just a thought. Apparently the idea that not every cartoon character you see on the big screen has to be hot makes people very angry.
I think those are all the big ones. I'll reblog with new additions if for some reason I come up with new things to complain about lmao

This is the journal(ish) I've talked about before. Or, I'm going to be treating it as a journal. This is just my vent account though.
Tumblr media
My main blog ( @sotogalmo ) will only reblog the most important posts, while the rest is going to stay on this blog.
Very “semi-personal” entries are going to be under the “read more”. I do advise for you to not interact with those posts if the tags trigger something (but I cannot fully stop you from reading my posts). — all of my posts are (kinda) 'semi-personal' though. But some time I know I'll make some non-personal entries, some day.
I suggest you turn on the setting to see the day on my posts, since the time can be weird for others. But it's alright if you don't do that.
But do know, that my typing quirk is setting the time on top. If that bothers you, then I suggest you don't hang around here or my main blog(I do that there too).
I might already say that this is a vent blog for @sotogalmo , but this will also just be more exploring who I am, finding some terms that might fit and such. Almost a lot of my posts would be me wondering about my identity (as of now, I feel I might be a therian? Feline to be exact; maybe a domestic cat, probably a Maine Coon? — But I also might say I "kin id" with Satan from Obey Me! Shall We Date?, but I'll get more into his character to make sure I'm not making a mistake on what I said, but as a small overall of what I got from him from past interest in said fandom, I do heavily relate to him. Maybe even Itzusumi from Dungeon Meshi too, I'll get into that fandom to know if I do)
And just general rambles. (I'm also questioning therian; and my Theriotypes— Maine Coon cat, husky, bleeding heart dove, and probably more? (I feel like there's more due to some shifts with scales and such). Also with being a copinglinker too)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I might even think I have other mental illnesses. But I'll make sure of that with my therapist (I most definitely have some sort of derealization/depersonalization of sorts, maybe OCD? maybe BPD? depression of a weird kind, etc. but I'm just a weird girl)
Tumblr media
Emojis: to explain why my posts are the way they are ↓
🕵️‍♂️🌂 -> Shuichi Saihara, DRV3
🌘🕵️‍♂️🕳️🧿 and 🟦🤖 -> Avoid/Detach Eye & Blue Robot.
⚡🔥 🐍🧶👾-> Raph, TMNT12/TMNT:MM, Needlem0use & Nemesis/Surge, Satan.
🔮🩹 -> Casey Jr, ROTTMNT: Movie
🫧🩺 -> Gaster mixed with rise Leo?
👁️‍🗨️⛳🧩 -> Tony Becker: GGY FNAF
🐕‍🦺🐕⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐🌕 -> Servant.
🕷️🌸🦚💞💞 -> Voice of the Smitten & Angel Dust(ish)
🍝🍊 -> THE GREAT PAPYRUS!
🧸🌀 -> CC
Shuichi: remembering, finding out, piano music & stars. Justice seeking and friendship.
Avoid/Robot: detachment, wanting to be detached from a situation/feeling detached from a situation. Feeling robotic or even sounding robotic/too formal. Only when talking about trauma(or just anything serious)
Raph/Needlem0use/Nemesis/Surge/Santan: my anger part. Quite obviously and is most present almost all of the time. Many faces for that part but you get the idea
Casey: family issues part. Finding comfort in ROTTMNT/how families are portrayed in ROTTMNT.
🩺🫧: mentality, “fascinating”, “oh! my apologies!”, old timey quotes(??), fancy talk part
Tony: Casey & Shuichi mix. Tony is all about how families work and how friendships work. Mainly will be talking about siblings and what I have left of them in my mind
Servant: how I act in school/me just following rules
Smitten & Angel Dust: love, desires, relationships(romantic), sexual & emotional intimacy part of myself. Also sin, since that connects very much to desires (for me). Validation as well
PAPYRUS: only(maybe?) in all caps. Bravery, autism autisming. General excitement!! Very expressive part of me
CC: little me/me feeling little. Mainly just gonna be emojis of plushies or talk of toys. Ig (if something so serious happens and I regress into them)
I separate a lot of my feelings to be their own characters. And then those characters would be then influenced by other characters. And then they just become different parts of me. That's why I use their names and such. — maybe this means, I'm probably a copinglinker !

The new "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem" movie is VIBRANT! The unique and ambitious style with handdrawn textures and effects is fun and flashy and incredibly colorful - there have been comparisons to Spiderverse, yet TMNT:MM is very much doing its own thing (there is a fair bit of flashing in this movie too, so be warned, but not on the extreme scale of either SV movie). The animation is beautifully naturalistic in its acting and the action really pops. The character designs have great funky shapes, purposefully significantly uneven in a way that delights me with their lack of symmetry.
It's always fun seeing how the characters and backstories change with each iteration trying to do something different. (It's part of why I'm trying to watch my way through different Transformers shows. I think it's neat how the characterizations are always different.) I've only seen the "Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" show and movie (and enjoyed them a lot), and the boys and the world are wildly different to that, and I still enjoyed this iteration of them very much too. The turtles are young and adorable and, while they did kick ass, they were also excitedly talking over each other and making stupid jokes and being a little... uncool? In a way that felt resonant to the experience of being a teenager just having a good time and finding stuff you like and trying to find other people like you. The banter was fun and silly and realistic and teasing. And occasionally heartfelt, though most of the characters are (as many people do) constantly disguising their vulnerability with self-aware jokes.
The story is straightforward (it's kind of simplistic and not very deep at all, honestly, but I enjoyed that just fine) and moves along quickly at a fun pace. It's very like Spiderverse in that I think it's accessible while expecting you to be familiar with basic superhero tropes, so it's a real blast if you're already fond of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles like I am, and I find it so refreshing to watch things that are unapologetic about their basic concept being more than a little ridiculous. There are lots of references, but they felt like references that people naturally make, especially teenagers with relatively little exposure to other people. This is a really silly movie! And the movie is like, "Yeah! This is silly! Isn't it great?! Now look at what we're going to do with it!"
The humor runs towards being pretty gross (puke, ooze, other bodily fluids and body humor, and some pretty extreme body horror regarding mutants) at times, depicted pretty graphically on screen. Which I kind of enjoyed, it's neat sometimes to see a movie go there, but I need to underline the vomit warning because that stuff was excessive. The movie also gets quite violent at times. As with most superhero media, they do beat up a lot of generic goons without pausing to consider the broken bones that would definitely be happening. (Very vague spoilers:) There's a nonconsensual medical experimentation scene that's a little disturbing, with repeated electric shocks, and the drawing of bodily fluids, though they keep telling jokes through it to try to keep it light. The final battle is also pretty destructive and did make me go, "They're just babies! (They're like 15ish.) Leave them alone!" a few times.
So, if you're looking for something fun and silly to go see, something that looks totally unique and vibrant on the animated scene, something that made me nostalgic for just joking around with my geeky friends by ourselves when we were teenagers, then I recommend going to see this movie! Especially if you enjoyed any previous iterations of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles even in passing. Though if you're a die-hard fan of a particular previous iteration, maybe you'll be annoyed by some of the adaptational differences, idk, and if you don't like any previous TMNT stuff, then this is maybe not for you. I'm looking forward to the TV show and the sequel that have been greenlit already!

hey guys i admire more than anything projects like ITSV/ATSV, cuphead, TMNT:MM, brba/bcs, and i love murder mysteries, superhero stories (especially spider-man he is my life) and interesting theming for animated/tv/storytelling projects like dimension 20's mentapolis, wandavision (even if i'm not that into it, i still LOVED the theming), well, cuphead ofc.
i am so so interested in screenwriting and story telling and art and animation specificities that make projects look unique
i am studying the most unrelated thing ever in university and i want to change my life's trajectory and do something that i WANT to do!
i obviously love drawing and character designing, i always have, even if i'm not the best at it
so i am wondering : what degree/program should i pursue or look for if i want to work in the comic book/animation/story telling world?
i am not interested in animation or illustration
i am interested in writing/screenwriting and character design and production design (a bit less) (for live action stuff)
the people i admire in the industry all studied/have different degrees in the art/writing/film world, so i'm not sure which way to look.
any advice? any recommendations for resources?
