TPN 181 - WSJ Release vs Volume Release Differences

#wait what they changed the last few pages? have to look it up in my volume o.o (via @officersnickers on this post)

Yeah I've talked about it a bit before in this post, but the volume version adds nine pages on to the WSJ release of chapter 181 and tweaks some of the frames starting around page 17, besides the inclusion of this incredibly poignant side scene at the beginning of the chapter:

The first is an expansion of Emma's speech to the demon god that spreads one panel's dialogue across multiple panels and adds on a bit of new text.

Pages 17-20, WSJ release:

Pages 19-25 of the WSJ release and 21-27 of the volume release remain the same.

Pages 25-28, WSJ release:

In the volume release, page 27 is the same as WSJ's 25, but page 28-29 adds a dream sequence/vision of Norman and Ray finding Emma on the shore they washed up on two years ago, as if she was always there, waiting for them to turn around and find her like in the chapter title art:

Page 30 expands WSJ's page 26 dialogue out across more panels:

Page 31 removes the "screw destiny" text in the panel next to Alex in WSJ's 27 and replaces it with a panel of Zack, Thoma, Gilda, Lanni, Rossi, Mark, and Jemima (the rest is the same):

The "screw destiny" text is moved to the bottom of page 32 while the top is a mix of flashback panels that include a straight-up lifted one of the trio hug from chapter 27, a new panel of Emma and Ray running after they remove the trackers in chapter 33 but before Anna tends to their wounds, a new spread of some of the kids in the bunker during the Cuvitidala arc, and a tweaked version of Emma and Ray extending their hands to Norman in chapters 153 and 154; Emma wears a slightly different smile while Ray wears a more relieved smile on his face as opposed to his stern frown in the originals:

The page 33-34 spread expands the scene on WSJ's page 28 to include more characters as well as alter the expressions of the characters who were on the original page. Notably, Don, Gilda, and Jemima can be seen crying now, Ray's smile is less intense and now softer and more fond, Norman is sporting a blush with tears pricking his eyes, and Emma's hint of a blush is stronger as tears prick her eyes as well, both in the group shot and in the panel of her by herself.

Page 35-36 is an extended spread I've talked about before:

This spread legit made me catch my breath for the briefest of seconds seeing it for the first time. Such a powerful statement conveyed in such simple concept: how after centuries of suffering on the grounds of Grace Field, that chapter of history closes as life blooms anew.

Page 37 shows what life is like for Mujika and Sonju as they lead the demon world into a new era (since Leuvis dipped lol)

And the final page of the volume's version of the chapter shows Emma running off to join her family in front of Alex's home, now filled with plenty of laughter and life again:

Media Issues "The Protagonist is Right!"

Now when I say The Protagonist is Right! I'm really referring to two different problems I see a lot of media, mainly series, tend to fall into. While both can show up at once, the two are usually separate. I'd also like to be clear I'm talking about media that agrees with their protagonist, not the protagonist is meant to be wrong and that's the point like Fight Club

I will be using two series I like to explain the two versions. The Promised Neverland & My Hero Academia (both manga, TPN finished, MHA up to chapter 411). I'll try to be vague but spoilers, this also means some oversimplifications be warned

TPN - The Protagonist is Right! because it's the right answer

On a math test this one forgot to show their work. The Protagonist has come to an answer most can see as right (either the audience and/ or the rest of the cast), how they got there however is either not shown, or not there to begin with.

After escaping Grace Field, Emma very quickly decides to be as pacifist as possible when it comes to the demons, along with those she escapes with. While she is briefly exposed to nonviolent & friendly demons, she also gets exposed to some of the most sadistic. Outside of it's technically possible, we don't see much of why Emma is to the point of protective over the demons

A few ways they could of better shown Emma's logic would be for her to see how average demons suffer in this system with no alternatives due to the government. Having her meet one of the every few humans she never met in the manga, who had a deep familial connection to a demon. Or even (at least partial) disbelief that genocide against the demons would work, even if just in the long term. To simplify: humanize the demons directly, have her influenced by another, belief that other methods wouldn't work. Combinations and other solutions are options but these ones were easy to express

While less effective for the audience she could have also argued her reasonings instead of just her final point. It is an option to reference things happening outside of what is directly shown to make things feel more real. It is also a particularly potent issue as after escaping the farm the story relies on Emma being around for almost anything to get done despite not previously having this issue

MHA - The Protagonist is Right! because they are the protagonist

This is where even if the work is shown (this one is more likely to take elements from the former) there is a large amount of evidence against the Protagonist's answer. This often comes from creators being unable to let their protagonists be wrong, and thus either be treated as wrong, or change perspective and/or goals etc

From the very start of the series MHA has had strong references to inequality, and issues in hero society. The protagonist Izuku Midoriya was originally a minority (quirkless) and we see that at the bare minimum he faces a lot of discrimination in his school for it, and implication that there is a lot of discrimination outside of it. Due to circumstances he gets a quirk and in no longer a minority, and the discrimination he faced is never addressed or brought up in any critical way again. It effects his ability to use his new quirk, but his outlook is never challenged by it

We see numerous types of discrimination, and corruption both directly from hero society and as a consequence of it as the series progresses. What we don't ever see is Midoriya, or anyone else the story frames as right, thinking anything needs to be done to the system. Most of the solutions we see him 'proving' that he is a good hero is doubling down and wish really hard, without ever changing anything of course.

A huge part of this issue comes from and is demonstrated by Endeavor. Who is guilty of child & spousal abuse and neglect, over getting second place in an ongoing contest, out of thousands. At the start he is shown completely in the wrong but once he starts his 'atonement' arc (it is treated like a full redemption more often than not) than it's like the narrative became allergic to calling him bad, constantly softening what he did, and glorifying his minimal improvements. This is seen in both the framing of the story on its own, as well as the other heroes, most of his family and hero students, that is including Midoriya, knowing full well what he's done. Those who do criticize him after his 'atonement' are framed as stubborn at best to outright wrong for it

In short we see reason after reason that the system isn't working. But we never see this reflected in the heroes we're supposed to be rooting for, not even a 'things need to change'. He keeps saying he wants to help but he and everyone else is unwilling to address the current issues as they are, or what led to them.

182 Days of TPN - Day 113

Chapter 113: “The King of Paradise”

Not being able to hear Barbara’s song is just one of the endless reasons why I still feel bitter about the second season and now that we’re getting to the later half of the story that was sorta kinda animated, y’all are gonna hear a lotta complaints about that disappointing adaptation.

Hasn’t even been a full five pages since her debut and we already know she’s a bit crazy and not a girl to mess with. Even Cislo is a bit creeped out by her habits.

Hey, Vincent, ya wanna know what pisses me off? like, really pisses me off? When an entire season totally disregards the whole middle of a fantastic story and cuts nearly half the cast and major character development, especially when said story is already finished and had no reason to divert from the source material at all. Are you aware of that? Crazy, huh? Other than that, the poor guy is practically begging them two to act a little more civilized, whereas Zazie is trying his best to communicate period.

I love how he wastes no time to give proper examples on how to better phrase their frustrations and how Norman steps in and explains when there’s confusion. Both could’ve been perfect teachers in the human world.

I know these kid’s lives are so dependent on these machines and couldn’t be saved regardless, but damn, indirectly killing ‘em off like this is still tragic. The squad just killed all the demons who run this farm, so did he really need to shut it all down? I guess new workers would just come by and start everything up again afterwards so it would be better to destroy the place completely, but still unfortunate for the kids.. and Norman’s sanity maybe. 

Typical GF kid setting stuff ablaze. Ray & Emma would be so proud.. of just the arson plan, not the many lives he just ended.

Firstly, kudos to the kiddos for even figuring out that a bunch of random numbers were supposed to be used in such a way. Secondly, how the hell did Norman even remember the exact pages and numbers for the words he needed? I thought Ray was the one with the good memory here. Boss has gotta have a copy of the same book lying around somewhere.

Yeah, go ahead and just stab my heart one last time. Surely I can handle it. No problem. Yup. Totally fine.

Favorite panel/moment:

They have such a badass reveal, like look at this! Casually walking through a dangerous farm and killing the demons effortlessly like it’s just an ordinary day for them. Surprising that three of ‘em are only teenagers but scary nonetheless. It’s wonderful.

And yet the anime decided our first look at them was gonna be.. this? Fuck. Talk about a serious downgrade on all levels.

i caught up to it a few years backk and havent touched it simce haha so i havent read the final arc(s), anything you'd like to say to maybe motivate me to pick it back up?

FUCKKKKK YEAHHHHH DUDE I LOVE THE TPN MANGA SO MUCH!! its definitely not perfect but i think the character motivations are very interesting, i dont want to spoil anything but "william minerva" is so heartbreaking, you learn a LOT more about the demons and their caste system, and one of my favorite things at the end is that there are a few special chapters (my favorite is 181.5, its fucked UP)

i love escape arc so so much but the last few arcs definitely have their moments and there are a bunch more silly characters to meet!! in particular i think you would like this guy hehe

I'd like to write these someday, but I don't know for sure that I will. People liked my tpn fanfic ideas so I'm posting these too because why not. Please @ me if you make anything based on these! These are all based primarily on the anime, and much more based on the world set up by season 1 than any of the kidnapping arcs.

Give Me Your Answer, Do - Eventual Katarina/Everyone. Everyone develops Hanahaki for Katarina. Hanahaki is not a known phenomenon in Sorcier, so nobody knows what's happening except for Katarina, who read a doujin about Hanahaki in her past life. She decides she must help her friends come to terms with and confess their feelings to whoever it is they love. Hilarity, interspersed with angst, ensues. (I have very specific ideas in mind for what types of flowers all the feelings manifest as.)

My Next Life as... Five Villainesses? - Gen (With minor one-sided Everyone/Katarina, of course). This one was inspired by an idea someone else posted on AO3, but I can't find it now. Anyway, Katarina accidentally double-books an afternoon; she promised to go to Alan's concert at the same time that she would be Maria's assistant in a baking competition. She wishes for a way to be in multiple places at once, and seems to find a spell that can do just that in a book, but when she casts the spell she is instead split into the five Mini-Katarinas brought from her mind to real life! They all are in different places and run into their other friends. Hilarity, interspersed with angst, ensues. (noticing a pattern?) Specifically, Timidrina meets Keith, who becomes fiercely protective of this shy version of his big sister. Happyrina meets Geordo and gives him a bit of a wake-up call about just how chaotic it would be to have a kid with Katarina (not that it discourages him). The other match-ups are much less defined in my mind tbh.

Rose in a Fisted Glove - Geordo/Keith, possibly Maria/Katarina on the side. Geordo gets the bright idea to pretend to date someone to make Katarina jealous, but none of the girls want to help him with this plan. (Maria because tricking Katarina like that would be immoral. Mary because the idea of pretending to date Geordo is too repulsive to go through with. Sophia because she is genre savvy enough to recognize the fake dating trope when she sees it.) Mostly on a lark, he asks Keith, who accepts in hope that it will backfire and instead make Katarina jealous that he's dating somebody. Naturally, Katarina is nothing but supportive when they tell her, and especially thanks Keith for trusting her with this information. Once it's clear the plan is a bust, Geordo wants to just admit to Katarina that it was a ruse, but Keith feels bad for lying and convinces him to keep it up for a month before staging a breakup so Katarina will think the relationship was real. Hilarity, angst, you get it.

Be More Noble - Gen or maybe Sophia/Katarina. Inspired by the musical version of Be More Chill but not dependent on familiarity with it. Katarina commits an especially egregious social faux pas, and Millidiana is at her wit's end. She hears tell of a sorcerer with a potion called "Squip" that has supposedly fixed behavior problems in noble children. She sneaks it into Katarina's tea. The Squip, (which manifests as a person only Katarina can see), quickly realizes that appealing to Katarina's non-existent social insecurities will not change her behavior, and instead transforms into A-chan, and tells her that she is in fact in a Katarina-centric DLC to Fortune Lover where there are all new doom flags that she must avoid to keep herself and her friends happy, and those doom flags happen to coincide with social faux pas, such as tree-climbing, eating sweets, farming, and otherwise being Katarina-like. The squip falls in love with Katarina, naturally, but this manifests as it becoming protective of her and wanting her to become noble beyond reproach. Her friends quickly become concerned. This one is actually more angst interspersed with hilarity than the other way around.

No Title Yet! - Sophia/Katarina. What if Sophia was the one who remembered her past life instead of Katarina? As a more genre-savvy protagonist, she becomes a master of Sorcier's magic system. She eventually tells Nicol the truth because he can read her well enough to know something's different about her. She becomes the center of the world for the original "harem" who become fiercely protective of and inspired by her, though not romantically interested (except for the tsundere semi-OG!Katarina). She also fixes a lot of their game canon problems, but she does so deliberately, and in much less drastic ways. (i.e., Katarina and Keith become friendly rivals instead of abusive, Katarina and Geordo come to an understanding that their engagement is in name only, etc.)

I've been buying little grails or obscure merch of fav characters/stuff from my fav series and always wait until my birthday to open them (the only thing in my life I have impulse control over haha). Found some rad stuff for my collection and can finally share it off!

Finally got a Sasuke (shiba inu) plush from GDW! He's not a favourite character but I missed out on his plush during the last wave of keychains.

A few Morse Code related TPN merch (bag, button, and coaster).

Cyborg 009 merch, which is my fav from this. Two shirts I've actually never seen before (AND THE SLEEVELESS SHIRT IS LIKE THE ONLY SHIRT IN EXISTENCE TO FIT ME AND NOT BE A DRESS). Both shirts are rad as hell! Love the Joe one but also perfect that the other one has the main cast on it (esp. Jet, he's my favourite 009 character but also fav anime character).

Also that book I expected to be a colouring book but the pages (minus just one colouring page) are blank. Still love it regardless though!

And then of course had to have something made of Rollo. His character means the world to me.

i dont think yall understand how lucky we are to have 2 GREAT adaptations of fma.. we couldve ended up like tpn with an awful adaptation (s2) that is unfaithful in the worst ways.. instead we got 2 incredible takes on the same story, both of which make fma even better in their own ways we r so lucky to be able to see our favourite characters be represented on screen so well.. TWICE !! with mostly the same cast !! thats so incredible ?? we got fma03 for the more-seinen fans, and fmab for the more-shonen fans!! don't like how one series ended? you have the other!

Trails of Cold Steel: This show isn’t terrible, but in a season stuffed to the gills with good old-fashioned classic fantasy, this is by far the weakest of the lot, and the boring politics that dominate the second episode don’t give me much hope of things getting better. I’ve heard good things about the game series this is a spinoff of, so maybe I’ll check that out at some point.

Endo and Kobayashi Live: Look, there’s no getting around it, this show looks like ass. Even by Tezuka Production’s already rock-bottom standard for anime visuals, the level of jank and ugly compositing on display here makes the back half of TPN season 2 look like a KyoAni show. And the comedy’s not good enough to make up for it.

Handyman Saitou: This one’s frustrating, because this is one of very few isekai that actually has a decent core cast that I enjoy spending time with. But this is one of the most incoherently structured anime I’ve seen in a long time. Short bits come and go with no connection, sometimes jumping to entirely different casts of characters with no explanation, and there was clearly no thought put into how to adapt the manga’s pacing to a 24-minute episode format. Plus the female warrior is treated so shittily by the writing, and what’s with that weird non sequiter about the creepy bloodsucking lesbian cleric? Like, what?
