i don't think americans understand the hunger games length a canadian has to go through to see taylor swift in concert. you can't buy an eras ticket outright. you have to enter a raffle to be able to enter a queued waiting room to then have the possibility to have the opportunity to buy a ticket.

how can you do this? oh you need to have a reward points account with a specific bank, rbc - royal bank of canada - kinda like bank of america. does having a bank account with that bank help you get a better chance? no.

the bank realized that everyone was mad about the ticket raffle so they made getting a bank rewards account free except now this bank has your info despite you just wanting to buy a concert ticket. the bank is now boasting 600k client increase in q4 because of the taylor swift sponsorship deal.

the way the media and everyone is framing this as a normal way to buy a concert ticket is wild. like no other artist does this. it's just madness. the secondary market is now full of resellers that are asking 3000$ for a nose bleed seat that it is more economically viable to fly to another country than see taylor swift in canada.

so you tried to get eras tour tickets. you sat in that cursed little waiting room, heart racing, snacks untouched, fully prepared to go to war. and then... ticketmaster self-destructed. bots took your spot. resale prices shot up to “sell your kidney on the dark web” levels.

but plot twist: this wasn’t just a tech glitch. it’s economics. specifically: monopoly power. let’s unpack it, swifty-style.

a monopoly is when one company basically owns the whole playground. no competition means they get to:

set the prices stupid high

give you terrible service

shrug when things fall apart

ticketmaster isn’t the only ticketing company technically, but after it merged with live nation in 2010, it gained a whole lot of control over:

the tickets

the venues

even the artists

that’s called vertical integration.

how this turned into the eras tour apocalypse:

demand: 3.5 million+ people signed up

supply: not even close to enough seats

ticketmaster: crashed. burned. bots thrived.

prices: “dynamic pricing” kicked in, aka surge pricing for concerts. seats hit $4k+.

and because they’re so dominant in the market, you didn’t have real alternatives. no other sellers. no options.

technically, it’s legal. but antitrust laws are supposed to stop companies from getting this kind of power. problem is, enforcement is kinda mid.

after the eras disaster, congress actually held a hearing called:

“that’s the ticket: promoting competition and protecting consumers in live entertainment.”

yes. actual senators quoted taylor lyrics in official government docs. this is our timeline.

what this teaches you (besides never trusting ticketmaster):

monopolies = higher prices, worse experiences, no choices

big mergers can quietly make competition disappear

economic policy absolutely affects your real life (even your chance to scream “all too well” live)

i’m soooo sick of how buying concert tickets works these days. because it doesn’t work. the system isn’t broken—it was designed to swirlie people out of their money by pitting them against bots and adding exorbitant fees. ticketmaster *could* make the system better, but they won’t. because making it better wouldn’t benefit them. it’s just a prime example of how capitalism ruins shit. concerts are supposed to be places people go to celebrate and enjoy the music of artists they care about or, hell, even artists they’ve heard about in passing and are interested in hearing. but they don’t build community anymore. it’s just a competition for who can actually get tickets, and how “good” the tickets are, and what “special things” happen at their show. the whole process is miserable. i don’t even want to try to get tickets bc the process makes me feel like shit. even if i had the money, that wouldn’t guarantee me a ticket in any way because of the competitiveness of the system!! i’m sick of it!!! i don’t even want to think about trying to go to concerts!!

Taylor Swift Eras Tour Toronto - Looking For Tickets To Any Toronto Eras Tour Concert!!

Im sure this a long shot but i figured i would try anyway… im looking for Eras Tour tickets for any of the Toronto shows, hoping for a decent price?? I missed the original ticket sale as i was in the hospital and its been impossible trying to get tickets ever since… Teo years ago i received a pretty scary diagnosis - Pulmonary Hypertension - there is no cure, and any kinds of “treatments” are just to try and help with symptoms. My PH is inoperable as my heart and lungs aren’t strong enough for surgery.. this whole thing has been very hard to accept and try to live my life with whatever time i have left.. This led me to starting my bucket list and of course I had to add The Eras Tour to that list! Taylor Swift has unknowingly gotten me through some of the hardest, scariest times of my life and if im able to go to one last concert The Eras Tour is it for me.. unfortunately there are some cruel people in this world and I’ve had someone try to scam me and using my illness to do so.. it was heartbreaking and the fact that someone would go so far as to use my illness against me? When all im trying to do is make lasting memories for my sister so when im no longer here she’ll have all these amazing memories to look back on! So if anyone is selling tickets or knows someone selling tickets (or is willing to help me find affordable tickets?) I would be so incredibly grateful!!
