American company invests Rs.800 crores in Telangana

The Telangana government has entered into an MoU with Bristol Meyers, an American pharma company. The agreement was signed by the representatives of the Bristol Mayors organization under the leadership of the Minister of State for IT and Industries KTR. The minister said that 1500 people will get employment opportunities through this company which has come forward with an investment of more than Rs.800 crores. On this occasion, Bristol Mayors explained to the representatives of the organization that the world's largest pharma cluster is being established in Hyderabad.

The government has issued orders to this effect and merged the Housing Department with the Roads-Buildings Department. Housing Department transferred assets, employees and staff to R&B Department. The State Housing Department, which was set up with the aim of realizing the dream of owning a home for the poor, will disappear with the latest decision.

How India’s capital cities got their names?

Capital cities are centers of administrative and economic significance and often serve as the seat of the government. In India, with so many States and Union Territories, we have as many state capitals. Indian State Capitals derive their name from one of five places. The most common being names of Gods and Goddesses, followed by names on Man-made structures and Notable People. Some Capital cities also derive their name from the physical environment around them. While three states, Telangana, Karnataka and Goa have their capital cities named after certain attributes and qualities of that city. With Hyderabad denoting the bravery of the people, like that of a 'Lion'. Bengaluru being strong and resilient and hence being called 'The City of Guards' and Panaji being 'The Land that does not flood'. The name of the capital city also inadvertently points to the culture of the region and the state, and what the culture deems important. It displays the beautiful cultural potpourri that India has.

On August 17, the Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union (TGPWU) released a report revealing alarming findings from a survey conducted in June 2024. The survey, which involved 166 workers from Telangana and Hyderabad, focused on the impact of extreme heat waves on gig and platform workers, particularly those employed by app-based companies like Ola, Uber, Swiggy, Zomato, and Flipkart.

The report highlighted that 52% of the workers surveyed experienced heat exhaustion during extreme heat waves. The survey included a substantial portion of workers—79 of whom have been in the sector for five years—with 51% being members of the TGPWU.

In addition to heat exhaustion, 30% of the workers reported suffering from heat stroke, while 27% experienced dehydration. Notably, out of 19 women surveyed, 13 reported that working in extreme heat exacerbated menstrual cramps, with some also experiencing urinary tract infections (UTIs) due to the harsh conditions.

“Workers also have limited access to cooling resources and healthcare. Many platform companies do not offer adequate support, such as healthcare services or paid sick leave. 65% of surveyed workers urge the government to provide clean water and toilets, while 55% call for shaded rest areas. Additionally, 43% support a break in working hours during peak heat times, with compensation to mitigate income loss,” the report said.
