Day 1: Thanatotheristes “Reaper of Death” from the Late Cretaceous, tyrannosaurid found in Canada

Like, anything tangentially related to T. rex gets goofy and over the top edgy names like Thanatotheristes (Death Harvester) and Lythronax (Gore King) and Moros (Impending Doom), but when the time comes for the big guy himself, the one you're absolutely justified to go all out with the most "Skillet - Monster" tier name you can come up with, we get...

Por Eva Rodríguez A pocos kilómetros de la frontera de EE UU y Canadá se encuentra la Formación Judith River, al norte de Montana. En este lugar se han hallado los restos fósiles de un dinosaurio —un cráneo y un esqueleto parcial— que acaba de ser identificado como una nueva especie: Lokiceratops rangiformis. Este animal contaba con dos enormes cuernos en forma de cuchillas en su parte posterior y a ello debe su nombre, que significa: “La cara con cuernos de Loki que parece un caribú”. Se trata del cuarto centrosaurino y el quinto dinosaurio con cuernos en general, identificado en este lugar. El hallazgo, que publica la revista Peerj, ha sido posible gracias al trabajo de un grupo de científicos liderado por el Museo de Historia Natural de Utah (EE UU). Lo curioso de este ejemplar es que se trata de uno de los dinosaurios herbívoros con cuernos más grandes y ornamentados jamás encontrados. “Cada uno de los animales en el ecosistema de la Formación Judith River en Montana tenía un patrón diferente de adornos en la nariz, encima de los ojos y a lo largo de la parte posterior de su escudo cefálico. Creemos que estos adornos se utilizan para atraer a las parejas y para intimidar a los rivales de la misma especie”, dice a SINC Mark Loewen, paleontólogo del museo y coautor principal de la investigación. El gigante, que medía aproximadamente 6,7 metros de largo y pesaba alrededor de 5 toneladas, es miembro de los ceratópsidos, un grupo que evolucionó hace unos 92 millones de años durante el Cretácico Superior, y que se diversificó y sobrevivió hasta el final de la era de los dinosaurios. “Los adornos en los cráneos de los ceratopsios son la forma principal en que actualmente podemos distinguir a as especies. Al igual que los pájaros y mamíferos ornamentados como los antílopes, estos ornamentos probablemente se utilizaban para exhibición”, declara a SINC Joseph Sertich, codirector del estudio y paleontólogo del Instituto Smithsonian de Investigaciones Tropicales y la Universidad Estatal de Colorado (EE UU). Hace más de 78 millones de años, Lokiceratops habitaba los pantanos y llanuras aluviales a lo largo de la costa oriental de Laramidia. Este continente insular representa lo que hoy es la parte occidental de América del Norte, creada cuando una gran vía marítima dividió el continente hace unos 100 millones de años. Desde entonces, la formación de montañas y los cambios dramáticos en el clima y el nivel del mar han alterado el mundo invernadero de Laramidia donde  prosperaron Lokiceratops  y otros dinosaurios. Restos de más dinosaurios encontrados en las mismas capas que Lokiceratops incluyen a los dinosaurios ceratópsidos Judiceratops, Albertaceratops, Medusaceratops y Wendiceratops, y el dinosaurio ‘pico de pato’ Probrachylophosaurus. Probablemente, eran cazados por un tiranosaurio similar al tiranosaurio Thanatotheristes. ...

“The last tyrannosaur described from Canada was Daspletosaurus in 1970.”

Thanatotheristes degrootorum

As I have been notified about this twice now, I thought I might cover Thanatotheristes degrootorum for today's extinct animal of the day. This dinosaur was first discovered in Canada in 2010 by John and Sandra De Groot. But it was in 2018 that Jared Voris decided to try and identify the animal more thoroughly with his team. It was two years later, likely earlier this year, that they have given the dinosaur the name, Reaper of Death (an amazing name!) It's really cool to hear that Canada has its own Tyrannosaur, even if it is smaller than the T-Rex.

A new tyrannosaurid - Thanatotheristes

Thanatotheristes degrootorum is a very recently described new genus and species of tyrannosaurid classed as a sister taxon of Daspletosaurus. The material, as you can see here, is very fragmentary, but the main reason I wanted to talk about this new dinosaur is well, its generic name, which literally means reaper of death. Sure, it’s a mouthful, but none the less badass.

T. degrootorum lived in the middle Campanian of the Late Cretaceous, around 80.1-79.5 million years ago. Currently, it’s the earliest tyrannosaurid known from Canada.

I sketched a few scenes where two male Thantotheristes encounter each other and after their intimidation attempts fail, they resort to battling it out. A female watches them from the fringes of their arena, keeping an eye on both of her suitors.
