Text
today i wish everyone who watched glass onion a ‘go listen to janelle monae’s entire discography’. It has a narrative and can be listened to in order from first to last, but you dont have to.
Personal favorite album is electric lady, with the archandroid being an -extremely- close second. Favorite songs include oh maker, wondaland, victory, and givin em what they love ft prince (but that last one isnt on spotify bcs they suck)

okay but the parallels between anakin skywalker and cindi mayweather are so fascinating to me. they’re both the chosen ones of their narratives, but anakin kind of tries to run away from that. his arrogance accepts that he has a great destiny, and his insecurities deny it. cindi isn’t sure whether she believes that she’s the archandroid or not, but she runs towards it regardless because it’s what she’d be trying to do anyways. it doesn’t matter to her whether she’s the prophesied savior, because even if the prophecy didn’t exist she’d still be fighting for freedom and rallying others around her. she lets go of her fear of the future, which is something anakin never manages to do. their forbidden relationships also play out in very interesting ways. both cindi and anakin have to keep their relationships a secret because of the consequences, but anakin’s fear of losing padmé eventually destroys it anyways. cindi and anthony are facing worse consequences once they’re found out, but having to go on the run to avoid being dismantled only strengthens their resolve for each other. again, something anakin never really reaches. cindi learns to let go of her fear, while anakin embraces it and it ruins his life (not to mention he fucked the entire galaxy over in the process). he eventually finds his way back to the light and fulfills the prophecy, while cindi’s story is left open-ended. maybe she succeeds, maybe she fails, maybe it’s not so black and white. idk i think about them a lot.

I love all the different ways artists will portray their song in a music video. A lot of the time It is made purely to drum up more hype for the song, so the video becomes this super over the top piece that somewhat relates to the song, but mostly is exciting and gets people to want to listen to it more.
Then there are cases where they go the opposite route. Make something so simple yet perfectly tied to the song in one way or another. My example of this is Janelle Monaes "Cold War"
Janelle Monae - Cold War [Official Music Video]
youtube
The fact that the entirety of this video is just a close up of her face, and it still is one of my favorite videos she has ever done speaks volumes to me. They show you just how the song emotional effects them by showing you this close up so you can see her expression change as certain lines are performed.
How the feed goes out of focus a few times throughout it. The way she is obviously holding back tears through the first half until the line "I was made to believe there's something wrong with me" finally makes her crack and she is crying the rest of the video. It's such a simple idea yet gives me chills everytime I watch it.

The Memory Librarian is my next TBR, so I thought I'd revisit some of Monáe's music before I get started. (And yes, I know the first two options are technically a demo collection and an EP, but I figured they should be included.)
Please reblog for a larger sample size.

dimension 20 fandom! where are you! i'm new and devouring seasons after seasons and i can't find you :(
[ID: Fanart of Esther Sinclair from Dimension 20: The Unsleeping City. Pastiche of Janelle Monáe's The ArchAndroid. Esther has the same expression; her eyes are glowing gold. Her "crown" is round, with many moons surrounding three buildings, from left to right: the Chrysler, the Empire State and the Rockfeller Center. Between the buildings, Orlando and Rovias sit on top of Esther's hair. /END ID]

This is my formal apology for just now, on this twelfth day of December in the year twenty twenty two, finally listening to Janelle Monae's The Arch Android.
This album is beautiful and I'm so sorry for sleeping on it for so long.

For 2023 I am going to try to listen to a new album every day. I’ve had a growing list of artists I want to check out for several months and I never actually get around to them so this is my plan to expand my music library and finally listen to the long list of recommendations I have.
I started a day early so todays album was The ArchAndroid by Janelle Monáe
This is honestly a work of art. As far as concept albums go this is probably the best I’ve seen. (It doesn’t hurt that I’m a huge sci-fi fan already) Monáe absolutely kills with this album. It is a very specific vibe of music that will probably not make its way into my daily rotation but it is stunning. (It also feels wrong to play the album on shuffle or to add specific songs to a playlist, the album just deserves to be listened to as one)
Favorite tracks are: Oh, Maker and Cold War
5/5 Stars
There is a 0% chance that I review every album but I might try to post each week with the list and my thoughts

i love love that the album notes for The Archandroid say that Oh, Maker is "inspired by Frankenstein's Monster [and] Rabbi Loew's Golem"...
two stories about the creation of life that have influenced the horror scene for ages, and Janelle wrote a beautiful tender song from the point of view of the creation, about the heartbreak that comes with love and life... its such a wonderful song and i love that they see and feel the humanity (so to speak) and personhood that is inherent to any creature....

Close your eyes and pick any Janelle Monáe song and it's gonna be good
they don't miss, and this has been one of my favorites for a long time. The chorus gets stuck in my head for hours on end fairly often
