#The Book of Daniel
Thinking about Esther and Daniel and their relation to the Joseph story (the first - but technically second - true exile narrative). Esther is a deconstruction. David it's perfection. Esther unconcerned with law. Daniel obsessed with it. Esther - the savior queen. Daniel - the wise mystic. Esther - God won't escape her lips. Daniel - God forever rests on his. All 3 young people. All 3 concerned with deliverance. All 3 looking for a rescue. All 3 looking for salvation.

“He seemed like he was trying to decide if he was offended or not. He had that look to him more or less every conversation we had. You know when you pick up a cat and the cat doesn't do anything to you but you're pretty sure he's about to claw your face off? That's Armand more or less all the time back then. And just like with disturbing cats, I knew I was inviting this on my own and it wouldn't change my behavior at all.”

really obsessed with who exactly outlined this section of Daniel's creepy little bible. like if it's Lisbeth, then it fits with her sermon about all the evils in the world and her fixation on Haven Point as a holy kingdom that rises about all that, a kingdom made safe and divine by Daniel's presence (which is why she's obsessed with keeping him, or destroying him if she can't do that). and a promise like this is a distraction from whatever 'visions,' i.e. the PTSD he definitely has, to keep him focus on what she perceives as a suitable goal.
but if it's Daniel, then it's potentially something different. because obviously he could be looking at these passages the same way Lisbeth does, and in a lot of ways he probably is, but the fact remains that the rhetoric of a kingdom all the holy people's own, one they can safely possess forever, really isn't that different on a basic level from what Sean has been saying all this time about Puerto Lobos, a Promised Land they inherited from their Father/father (insert separate post about Esteban as Sean's missing god and Esteban's flickering ghost as a reminder that god has left the building in Faith). which is something Daniel never really believed in the way Sean did, but his beliefs have currently been shifting quite a bit any.
and then with that interpretation, the four great beasts trying to claim that land one after the other, rising from the earth to take the idea of Puerto Lobos as their own, could conceivably get translated in Daniel's head as all the villains he and Sean have faced so far, the hunters and farmers in all the stories Sean has told him (maybe even the coyote cult, although he hasn't realized it yet). they're terrifying and monstrous and his head is full of ugly visions, but if he holds out long long enough, than his big brother will be here to...save him? share the kingdom with him, either in Puerto Lobos or in Haven Point?
I doubt even Daniel knows, and I certainly doubt that when he made those notation he was willing to seriously acknowledge any deviation from Lisbeth's world order. but lis2 is all about hidden meanings in seemingly straightforward stories and there really could be a fragile thread of rebellion buried deep in something innocuous as this passage, just waiting for Sean to reach in and pull.

(You reblogged a fic ask meme on the Book of Daniel blog, but the ask box there is closed so I'm dropping the questions here, hope that's alright)
1, and 6 (hard mode: not including Daniel, Marius or Armand)
WHOOPS I didn't realize asks weren't open there xD
1: inspo for the fic
I've been wanting to do this fic since like fall 2020 when I had only been in the fandom about 8 months or so. Daniel hadn't been my favorite to start but after roleplaying him he grew on me. After finishing the series and seeing how Daniel was dropped I wasn't chill with that, especially him not being in the mural. I wished more people could see that he was such an important part of the series, he and Louis is where it started and he deserved his own story to be told.
Also spite. I hated seeing people shit on Daniel saying he wasn't important, he wasnt a main character, he was just a tool for Armand to grow, saying he was weak or didn't contribute anything, even that he didn't even write Interview. Any time I saw someone with a bad Daniel take it spurred me to want to write this and to keep it on the top of AO3 every week for the foreseeable future ^^
6: favorite character (hard mode)
OOF. Ok I had to think about this a while. I want to say Thorne but he really isn't in the fic enough to be counted yet. So after that I'm gonna say, collectively, Daniels San Francisco family. Writing his life in SF with Scott, Rose, Paul and everyone else who accepted and loved him and made him part of their culture was very special for me.

you'd never know my favourite parts of the show are the fucked up insane bits when my first instinct is to draw the cheesiest thing imaginable

The first and only time Lestat ever tells someone not to scream because of him (probably right after clawing his outraged way out of the abandoned hot topic that I can only assume was built over his snoozing spot)
Kudos to @stlelios and @pimini whose posts appeared on my for you page and launched these images directly into my mind’s eye

first two vampire books: armand is so so so sad whenever his mask slips for even a second he’s so filled with despair that it makes everyone sad. lestat beat the shit out of him and then decided to help him because he felt bad for this miserable creature
armand in the devils minion chapter: it’s so fun to put rats in the microwave. I’m excited to learn everything in the world and watch the same movies on repeat and laugh and buy everything on the menu. we’re going to the opera! the museum! I love putting stuff in blenders and calling random people on the phone to talk to them for hours just because it’s so exciting that phones can call all over the world now. I’m going to buy an island. I love airplanes. i’ve learned how to make movies! WAKE UP!! I have questions to ask like how do phones work???? and i’ve also decided we’re going on vacation the plane leaves in thirty minutes so get up beloved!!!!

Daniel's memories of Alice being memories of Armand
Daniel first mentions Alice in episode 2 of season 1. He's served a dessert that he mentions he ate after asking his first wife Alice to marry him in Paris (a city significant to Armand). Why are Louis and Armand serving him something that would remind him of Alice? Hmm. He goes on to describe a unique physical trait she had:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I remember finding this a weird detail when I first watched this scene. But after the scene of Armand taking off his contacts to reveal his vamp eyes, I feel like it could be a reference to that. This still felt like a stretch but the proposal scene from today's episode convinced me.
Louis asks Daniel what Alice said when he proposed to her and Daniel suddenly has a memory of Armand from the past.
Tumblr media
The timing of this memory as he's being asked about Alice can't be a coincidence. He looks at Armand in confusion. And when he finally admits that she said no. It's ARMAND who replies that she wanted to say yes.
Tumblr media
Why would Armand know this? Why would he feel the need to tell Daniel this after seeing him looking wrecked by the memory?
And then there's Louis' remark about Daniel feeling more comfortable holding Alice's hand in Paris than in America:
Tumblr media
Earlier in the episode, Louis talks about Paris being less racist than America. I think this line is about him thinking Paris is also less homophobic than America.
It's not the first time Louis hinted at Daniel being bi or gay.
Tumblr media
I don't think this memory is about Daniel literally asking Armand to marry him. But pretty much the equivalent when you are a human in love with a vampire. He probably asked Armand to turn him so they could spend eternity together and Armand said no.
