*hitting you with a stick* no benoit blanc movies should not interact. they should not lead up to something. you need to detox from the marvel/sherlock bbc poisoning. they should be completely independent movies (maybe w some cameos/little references for fun) and go on for as long as there are stories rian johnson wants to tell in this universe. i do not want an overarching plot i do not want a team up i dont want a benoit-focused prequel i want some good old fashioned episodic murder mysteries that have nothing to do with each other!!!!!!!!!!! also rian johnson has literally said he's not gonna do a prequel and he wants the movies to all stand on their own
addendum 1: by "marvel/sherlock bbc poisoning" i dont mean that those caused this over-serialization, but i think they are partially responsible for why audiences are expecting it. learn to engage w murder mysteries on the genre's own terms
addendum 2: idc what headcanons you have. i actively encourage you to write fanfic about marta and helen solving crime if you wanna. that is literally what fanfiction is for my guy! if you want to know how phillip and benoit met THAT IS WHY FANFIC EXISTS

don't think i realized how much of a sucker i am for the Found Family trope until a one-off character i barely had an opinion of said "can i come home now?" to the main character he was staying with meaning, obviously, "can i ditch this weird dinner you've sent me to and come back to your house, which i am spending a few days at" but my whole brain went "HOME??? adopt him? new son/nephew/precocious younger sibling/protege? 11/10 yes please. i love him i want to protect him etc."
#found family#murder she wrote#michael digby#unfortunately fan wiki says he's in exactly one episode#aND nobody else has yet posted a convoluted au fanfic in which he does stay in cabot cove#but consider#1. travel writer who is successful by Travel Writer standards#2. BUT not as name/face-famous as J. B. Fletcher best-selling mystery author#3. down to do whatever weirdass bullshit mrs fletcher points him at#4. One Weird Trick To Prevent Drunkenness is already 10/10 but elliot spencer this man and give him a ton of weird tricks#tldr he is the perfect partner in crime-solving#i want five seasons and a movie of him calling her up from wherever he's writing about to tell her about Suspicious Events#sometimes she drops everything immediately sometimes he has to talk her into it#always holds back the weirdest detail in case she REALLY needs persuading and then he's like *sigh* ''okay#i guess i'll just never know how the victim's shoelaces ended up in the garbage disposal#but if you're too busy on your FAKE murder to help with a REAL one i guess--'' ''stop complaining michael i'm already packing.''#she's still quite capable of getting information herself tyvm but sometimes people are like ''THE jb fletcher???''#''i've read some of your books and ALSO read about your real-life detective skills in the paper!''#jb: ''…okay michael they're on to me#you're gonna have to ~coincidentally~ befriend these people''#he's very ''dammit jess i'm a TRAVEL writer not a MYSTERY writer'' but he always gets something useful#one ep she can't come to his murder because there's one in cabot cove#they consult via phone on their respective murders#he does some top-notch sleuthing she pulls one of his One Weird Tricks they both catch murderers#he ends up living in cabot cove when he's not travelling to 'relax'#*episode in which he buys a house there: three people in cabot cove are murdered*

If I was a detective I’d be Columbo because I don’t know I just really like Columbo and that should be reason enough.

It's so funny that Misa is famous. Imagine that you're a normal ass cop and you get put on a special task force to catch a mass murderer. And you meet with the expert detective in charge. And he tells you your top 2 suspects are a random teenager and like. Ariana grande

And we have a VIP in a cockfight arena, and he is a magician. So what would he be doing there? Is he going to perform some kind of a trick there or just watching?

Episode 186: The Murdered Famous Detective (Part 2)
It was greasy hair with glasses, only he didn’t have glasses. He wanted to create the perfect crime that no producer, no writer, no police officer, not even a famous detective could solve. He used a crossbow, a screw driver, a sharp bullet, a mattress, glass shards, an explosive device, and coconut fibers. And the victim had to be Sunaoka-san.

I would’ve loved to see the in-universe news reports after the events of Glass Onion. Imagine someone having to put out to the public “Tonight’s top story, idiot billionaire Miles Bron uses experimental energy source to blow up own home, taking with it arguably the most famous painting of all time. At the same event noted streamer and misogynist Duke Whatshisname was allegedly murdered, although according to our sources this was not related to the explosion. All surviving members of the incident have contracted covid and experts are saying this whole case could be tied up in the courts for years based purely on how ridiculous it all is. Celebrated detective Benoit Blanc weighs in.*”
*From home, because he also has covid.

I just realized something about Glass Onion and the way it’s structured, and like everything else in the movie it was told to us in the start:
(GLASS ONION SPOILERS AHEAD)
… it’s a fugue. The movie is a Fugue.
During the puzzle box sequence when the music box puzzle opens, Yo Yo Ma tells Peg that the music they’re hearing is Bach’s “Little Fugue in G Minor” he explains:
“A fugue is a beautiful musical puzzle based on just one tune. And when you layer this tune on top of itself, it starts to change and turn into a beautiful new structure.”
Right in front of our eyes, Rian Johnson just told us how the movie was going to go. It starts out with a simple tune, your classic murder mystery setup much like the Clue movie and half of the mysteries Agatha Christie was famous for writing. We meet the eccentric characters, a murder happens, everyone runs around for a while, and the detective seems ready to tell us whodunit…
And then the movie starts over again. The tune is the same, but layered on top of itself with new context and a different point of view. Every new scene from Helen or Benoit’s perspective changes our perspective on the previous half of the movie, scene by scene. This new layer of the film adds to it and forms a beautiful new structure itself.
Addendum: the opening shots of each act also parallel each other. The first half begins with the start of Bach’s Little Fugue as we are introduced to Claire at her home when her puzzle box is delivered, and then we hear the fugue again but further on in the piece when Helen delivers her box to Benoit Blanc in the second half.
UPDATE: Having seen Rian Johnson’s audio commentary of the film, he confirmed that it was intentional! VINDICATION!!!
