in the company of cheerful ladies
Tumblr media
The senior detective of No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency, Mma Ramotswe is many things; she is optimistic, traditional in her manners and her build, but she is never what you can call inefficient. She can plan better than everyone, she makes mistakes, but she tackles them in the cleverest way possible, which makes her who she is - a hero of the town. Her assistant, Mma Makutsi may have obtained a startling 97% in the final examinations of her Secretarial College, but she would obtain more than 100% when it came to her human skills, and also her aphorisms. Meanwhile, you have people being slightly self-deceptive, especially when it came to sharing the good things in life, but not to anyone's disadvantage:
'That is true', said Mma Potokwani sadly. 'There are many temptations in this life, but cake is probably one of the biggest of them.'
The men in Alexander McCall Smith's novel are undeniably present, some of them good too, and some who threaten (or, rather, try) to steal the spotlight, but ultimately it's the ladies who take their firm positions there on the stage. So, you have feminism, conservatism and empathy all rolled into one sweet book, as I sure hope his other works are too!

Which British author wrote "The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency" series of books?
Tumblr media
"The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency" is a series of novels by the British author Alexander McCall Smith. The series began in 1998, and by 2021 there have been 22 novels. The stories are set in Botswana where the main character Mma Precious Ramotswe established a detective agency using the inheritance money from her father. In each book, Mma Precious Ramotswe has a new mystery or crime to solve, but the stories focus just as much on her life, adventures, and the foibles of other characters.
Alexander McCall Smith was born in 1948 and raised by his British parents in Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). After working as a Professor of Medical Law at the University of Edinburgh, McCall Smith became a fiction writer, starting with children's novels before moving on to "The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency". He has since written several series of books, such as the "44 Scotland Street" series (2005-present), "The Sunday Philosophy Club" series (2004-present), and the "Professor Dr von Igelfeld Entertainments" series (1997-present).
In 2004, McCall Smith published the sixth book in "The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency", which won him the Author of the Year award at the "British Book Awards". Later that year, McCall Smith began dramatising the series for radio, which ran until 2019. The first book was filmed for television in 2008, starring American actress Jill Scott (born 1972) as the main character.

One Dress a Day - bonus challenges
Multicoloured August The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency - Precious Ramotswe (Jill Scott)
Precious wears a lot of traditional Zimbabwean garments in some amazing fabrics. I’ve always liked this brown and teal dress, but I had to include this green and blue number as well! The cut is very simple, but they look very cool to wear, and they’re so pretty.

Hospitals were to her a memento mori in bricks and mortar; an awful reminder of the inevitable end that was coming to all of us but which she felt was best ignored while one got on with the business of life.

The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency, by Alexander Mcall Smith
This one has been on my list for a while. I'm glad that I finally got to it.
Set in Botswana, Africa, the book stars Precious Ramotswe a woman in her thirties who after her beloved father died, starts a detective agency, she is the only lady detective in the contryand she takes cases of all types. She is a smart, good natured woman, but also no nonsense and doesn't shy away from telling anyone, even her clients hard truths, though she will do it nicely if the situation calls for it.
The book not only follows cases, but also tells the story of her upbringing with her doting father and a cousin who helped raise her after her mother died. We follow her though her first romantic relationship and what came after, all leading to the opening of the agency and her first steps, an missteps as a detective.
This book reminds me of both Mr. Midshipman Hornblower and the best of Agatha Christie.
It reminds me of Hornblower because the book is very episodic, a lot of chapters are stories unto themselves, but are held together by a couple of plot threads.
I feel like this is a great way to really get to know the main character, watch them grow, watch how each adventure, no mater how small, shapes their skill. And this is very much how Mma Ramotswe develops. Over the course of the book.
I love how Botswana is a character itself, and how it is so lovingly described.
The writing as a different cadence then anything I have ever read. The story isn't in a rush to get where it's going, but it doesn't feel slow. Occasionally things will stop and a view will be be described, or Mma Ramotswe will muse on something not related to anything going on. In another book, this might feel like padding, but in this, it just feels natural.
I really enjoyed this one.

#No 1 ladies detective agency series
Like many things Mma Ramotswe might say, they may sound right, but when you look at them closely they can be a bit ambiguous. That's right, it's a very puzzling quote. It suits Mma Ramotswe's character because she's of the sunny disposition and she takes a very positive view of life, so I would've thought that if anybody's going to walk in the sunshine it's Mma Precious Ramotswe.Īt one point in the book Mma Ramotswe says it's not important which tree you sit under, as long as you sit under the right tree. Then eventually we decided that 'in the sunshine', or 'in sunshine' was the best thing for that. I think I started off this title thinking of saying 'the woman who walked somewhere' and I didn't have a particular destination for her. Sheryl MacKay: Why is this book called The Woman Who Walked in Sunshine?Īlexander McCall Smith:Titles often have a rather interesting past in that they go through various forms and they can change quite dramatically. and Canada to promote his latest book in the series. 7, in between McCall Smith's tour of the U.S. He sat down with North by Northwest host Sheryl MacKay and some listeners at Barbaro-Jo's Books to Cooks in Vancouver on Nov. McCall Smith himself grew up in southern Africa - he was born in what was then the British Colony of Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) and later moved to Scotland to study law.
#No 1 ladies detective agency series
He is arguably best known for his best-selling series The No.1 Ladies Detective Agency, which follows the adventures of Mma Precious Ramotswe, who has founded an agency in Gabarone, the capital of Botswana. The Scottish author and retired professor of medical law has written everything from academic texts and children's books to short stories composed entirely on Twitter. Alexander McCall Smith is a very prolific writer.

#NO 1 LADIES DETECTIVE AGENCY SERIES#
If the movies are actually made, they’ll be filmed mostly in Cape Town with occasional lensing in Botswana, the locale where the story is set. The Botswana government, hard hit by the recession, balked at the idea of subsidizing film production while South Africa doubled their rebate offer. It was reported last month that the show’s producers had relocated from Botswana to Cape Town. It seems they won’t be filmed completely in Botswana however. If they get the final go-ahead, the two HBO movies would likely be shot back-to-back. And if we can get the cast together and if everything can come together we’ve love to do it. 1 Ladies Detective Agency A young woman from the African nation of Botswana opens her countrys first female-owned detective agency in this HBO drama series. This weekend, Lombardo said, “We’re talking to our friends at the Weinstein Company about the possibility of, and actually developing two scripts, possibly to do two movies. The main cast members are very good, as are most of the minor ones. The characters, including the new hairdresser, are delightfully fleshed out, and the slight changes in characters from the books seem well thought out and convincing. The cast includes Jill Scott, Anika Noni Rose, Lucian Msamati, and Desmond Dube. A truly beautiful view of another culture. The comedy-drama was filmed on location in Botswana and follows Mma Ramotswe as she operates a detective agency.
#NO 1 LADIES DETECTIVE AGENCY SERIES#
1 Ladies’ Detective Agency ran for seven episodes on HBO, from March until May in 2009. 1 Ladies Detective Agency Season 1 (1,359) 8.2 2009 NR A young woman from the African nation of Botswana fulfills a lifelong dream by opening her countrys first female-owned detective agency in Season One of this HBO drama series based on the best-selling novels. Though it won’t be continuing as a TV series, there are plans to continue the story in the form of two movies. At the TCA press tour, Michael Lombardo, HBO’s president of programming, spoke about the future of No.

Mma Precious Ramotswe solves cases for wives whose husbands have gone missing, for a school teacher whose son has disappeared by finding the kidnappers, for a wealthy father whose 16-year-old daughter is frustrating him by going out on her own. The novels have been adapted for radio by the author and for television. Critical reception has matched the sales of the novels, generally positive, and considering the strength of the novels to be in the characters and Mma Ramotswe's wisdom rather than in the specific mysteries solved in each novel. In 2004, sales in English exceeded five million, and the series has been translated to other languages. The readership was at first small, then gained abruptly in popularity in the US and in England, beyond the author's home in Scotland. Each book in the series follows from the previous book. The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency
Mystery novel set in Botswana about love, independence and humanity Content warning: family violence, child labour There are a lot of people in my family who enjoy detective and mystery novels, and I have had this book recommended to me several times. "Promise me.”
"Hope I,-"
"Promise Dream."
"I promise."
The Dream Lord stiffened in his seat as he banished away his thoughts to the darkest chambers of his mind, afraid they would return otherwise. But they still did, every time. The colours swirling in the glass pane that framed his throne cast vibrant hues of light on his poised face, accentuating his features that were sharp enough to cut skin. Promise Dream the words come back as a whisper, evoking a chill on his neck that travelled through his spine. He shut his eyes willing his mind to quiet, trying to-
"My lord." Lucienne's welcoming voice pulled him to the present.
"You have a visitor," she announced.
Morpheus raised an eyebrow imperceptibly at his failure to come up with someone who might visit his realm, especially when he was not expecting anyone.
"Little brother.” The voice was accompanied by a woman with black curls and a skin that glowed before the light from the glass pane even touched her.
"Death," Morpheus stated, bewilderment tucked somewhere in his tone. After all, he hadn't expected to meet her again so soon.
"How are you?" She asked.
"I am truly well sister, what brings you here?"
Death knew how much truth his ‘truly well’ held but let it pass for the moment. "Lucienne would you please excuse us for a minute?"
"Ofcourse my lady," she dipped her head and pursued the command, closing the colossal doors behind her.
"Something...something has happened." Death wasted no time in speaking.
This time Dream did not try to hide the raise in his eyebrow. "Whatever do you mean?" His calm voice floated through the room.
"Dream,”
Before she could follow the sentence, turmoil had already begun growing within him, Death was using his name only to soften the blow.
"It's here."
“Bloody hell, that was one hell of a case!” Charles exclaimed as he shut the door behind you three.
“Charles you know Edwin suffers from serious ptsd please stop using hell so much around him. It’s not like the British lack in creative curses,” you reprimanded him as you shrugged your jacket off, draping it over the couch.
“Haha you’re hilarious,” Edwin stated monotonically while Charles started chanting ‘hell’ in the background just to spite the both of you.
“Thanks hon,” you winked, “and Charles shut that hole up or if the ghost didn’t get you I surely will.”
“Hell hell hell hell hell- ow what was that for?”
You grinned in delight as your boot contacted with his abdomen, “for being annoying.”
Another “ow” escaped Charles as he sent glaring looks at you. “And that?”
“For being you,” you beamed, devoid of both your boots now.
Your smile was quickly wiped off your face as Charles began his incantation right in your face.
“Get away from me!” You groaned flailing your hands to push his bloodied face away.
“Okay now I don’t know about you both but I for one am seriously tired after the events that have transpired during the day. So if you will excuse me and please take whatever this is,” Edwin gestured at the both of you with a foul expression, “somewhere else because I need to rest.”
“Hell hell hell.” Charles resumed being annoying as if nothing had happened.
“I swear if even a droplet of that ghost’s blood drops on my t-shirt I will fucking kill you. Again.”
“Hell hell- you love me too much for that-hell hell-”
“Yeah? Go on and find out- NO!” You let out a scream that would have for sure woken up your neighbours if you had any, being a secretive ghost agency and what not.
“You bitch! That was my favourite t-shirt!” You looked down at the once white fabric now bearing an impression of Charles right profile with blood.
“I know.” He had the audacity to smirk at that.
You went for his throat, fully determined to give truth to your previous threat when Edwin pulled you from him.
"Enough! Both of you!”
Charles and you stared at each other, your ears still hot with fury.
“Charles go wash up that face please! And Hazel you need sleep, unlike us so go retire to your bedroom.”
“Like you can just order us around,” you rolled your eyes.
But Edwin’s one look in your way got you scrambling for your jacket.
“Yes boss.” Charles made his way to the bathroom.
“Goodnight Edwin, fuck you Charles.” And you departed with your wishes.
You sighed as you switched on the lights in your room, and plopped down on the single bed. Not even mustering up the courage to change into your night clothes, you let sleep engulf you and entered the world of dreaming.
A/N: hello peeps this story is set post the events of the sandman show and i haven’t read the comics so you will have to bear with the inconsistencies and the like. if i mess up real bad pls do let me know<3
