National Sense Of Smell Day
Take some time to stop and smell the roses—literally. National Sense of Smell Day is for appreciating the many scents our noses can pick up  and enjoy.
In the dark annals of history it served to protect us from danger as  we came down from the trees and raised ourselves onto two feet. So  strongly attached to our development is it that it is connected to  multiple different neurological systems, and as such can trigger  memories in a way that little else can.
With it we can identify our favorite dish, or pick up the wafting  scent of our favorite person, that’s right, Sense of Smell Day is  dedicated to this most amazing of our (far more than five) senses.
History of Sense of Smell
The Sense of Smell Institute sponsors this holiday for reasons so  obvious we needn’t mention it. The importance of the sense of smell is  often overlooked, and some don’t truly appreciate how much of a role it  plays in every day of our lives.
Some of the most important and comforting things we can experience  are intricately tied to our sense of smell, and our sense of smell  becomes much less discerning without it. The Sense of Smell Institute is  the research and education division of The Fragrance Foundation.
Interesting things that this institute has managed to unveil is the fact that no two people smell odors  in quite the same way. As the day progresses your sense of smell gets  stronger, with the evening representing our strongest sense of smell.
This makes a certain amount of sense when you consider that during the day our sight  is the most important sense in identifying dangers, and at night, it  could be a scent on the wind that saved our ancestors. Another  interesting revelation is that Vitamin A is not, as purported, good for  our eyesight by and large, but is actually vitally important for our  sense of smell. A lack of it can actually cause Anosmia! (An odd little  word that means ‘loss of a sense of smell’.)
How to celebrate Sense of Smell Day
The best way to celebrate Sense of Smell Day is to give our little  sniffer a work-out. Try savoring new scents throughout the day, and  really take some time to appreciate all the various odors that cross  your path.
While it was generally a feast for all the sense, you can even get  together with friends and play a game called “The Pleasure Room”, where  you take turns trying to identify things by smell.
Maybe even set up some surprises and get smells that are really close  to each other, or smell very much alike but are from incredibly  different sources. All sorts of fun can be had on Sense of Smell Day!

A list of beverages that Stolas favors and/or would likely order:
TEAS (chosen from PALAIS DES THÉS)
☆ Blue Flowers - Earl Grey: a fragrant black tea featuring bergamot and cornflower. ☆ Thé du Hammam blend: black tea with flavors of rhubarb, rose, and red berries. ☆ French Garden herbal: a delicate blend of pear, apple, and blackberry leaves. Additional: He loves most herbal blends and will drink white/green teas, especially if they feature rose or hibiscus. However, he favors black tea.
COFFEES
☆ Frozen caramel coffee with crunchy toffee bits, whipped cream, and caramel sauce to drizzle. ☆ Iced OR hot lavender honey latte. ☆ Double shot espresso with a teaspoon of honey and some brown sugar. ☆ A sweetened flat white. ☆ Chai lattes (err on the spicy side; he loathes it sweet; always hot).
ALCOHOL
☆ Limoncello / Lemon martinis. ☆ Absinthe (obviously). ☆ Most vodkas from Ketel One (esp the Botanicals line). ☆ Red wine (favors medium to sweet, but indulges in dry on occasion). ☆ Bramble (cocktail). ☆ Gin Fizz / Gin & tonics. Additional: Honestly, if it's fruity, aromatic, or frozen - he's likely to enjoy it. He does NOT do well with beers or ciders.

National Snack Day
Today is dedicated to eating snacks! Snacks are usually smaller than a meal and often eaten between them. They are sometimes even eaten late at night and called midnight snacks. They can be bought processed or prepackaged, or made fresh at home. They may be unhealthy or healthy. The word “snack” derives from the Dutch word “snacken,” which means to bite. By 1402, the word had appeared in English as a noun.
The first snack food in the United States was the peanut. Peanuts first arrived from South America via slave ships and began being used in cooking in southern plantations. It wasn’t until after the Civil War that their popularity spread north, and they eventually became popular at baseball games and in vaudeville theaters. Snacks such as popcorn, pretzels, and peanuts were seen as being lower-class foods, and were sold from street vendors during the second half of the nineteenth century.
Many snack foods were sold or introduced at the St. Louis World’s Fair in 1904, leading to their popularity across the country. Examples include cotton candy, hot dogs, waffle cones, and hamburgers. Jell-O was also invented around the turn of century, and the 1910s brought us the Oreo cookie and individually-wrapped chocolate Tastycakes.
Snacking gained popularity during the Prohibition era. At this time, pretzels became more accepted. The era of Prohibition and the Great Depression brought us the Butterfinger, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, Twinkies, Snickers, Fritos, Ritz Crackers, and Lay’s Potato Chips. Improved packaging made snack foods more popular—they had less of a contamination risk and could more easily be advertised with their visible logos.
During World War II, rationing of foodstuffs such as meat, butter, and sugar was part of the war effort, so not many new snacks were introduced. An exception was M&M’s, which began being produced in 1941 for soldiers overseas. Cheetos are an example of a snack that was introduced shortly after the end of the war. By the 1950s, snacking had become an American pastime. The rest of the century brought us many new snacks: Pop-Tarts, Pringles, Doritos, Hunt’s Snack Pack pudding, Gatorade, Combos, Reese’s Pieces, Fruit Roll-Ups, and Teddy Grahams.
Today, Americans buy 4.3 billion pounds of snack food a year, eating seventeen pounds a person. The most popular snack food in America is the potato chip, which Americans gobble over six pounds a person of each year. The other top snack foods include nuts, microwave popcorn, and corn chips. Today’s holiday was created by Jace Shoemaker-Galloway, the “Queen of Holidays.”
How to Observe National Snack Day
Celebrate the day by eating snacks. It’s not even necessary to eat any meals today; replace them with snacks and try as many as you can. Here are a few common snacks to get you started:
Popular Snacks:
Chips
Cookies
Ice cream
Popsicles
Pretzels
Crackers
Snack mix (such as Chex Mix or Gardetto’s)
Candy
Healthier Snacks:
Fruits and vegetables (may be dipped in healthy dips such as hummus and yogurt)
Nuts and seeds
Whole grain cereals, oats, and granola bars with few added sweeteners
Low-fat yogurt and cheeses
Popcorn without a large amount of salt or fat added

two-parter:
like many other zillenial cusps, my white ass cant get enough of moscow mules– the more ginger kick the better. pausing now in case you need to roll your eyes; no worries. now, got any favorites in the category of mules/bucks? any underrated gems of the genre i should be aware of?
for my second inquiry... how to put this. i've always loved smells, and to experience scents (i consider myself a novice fumehead). thus i feel drawn to the herbaceous/aromatic/botanical aspects of liquor and liquor preparation. not sure exactly what to ask here, except maybe just like, how does one "get into" gin and/or bitters...? i have an interest in both but no clue where or how to start learning (or what to start drinking), if that makes sense. apologies if that's much too open-ended; if you don't really know what to do with this question, feel free to just throw one or more related cocktail recommendation/s at me and call it a day.
thanks!! 🥂🍻
mules are great, both the drink and the animal. unfortunately that's not a diverse category because the ginger beer is overpowering. however, it's very flexible. ginger beer and spirits go together like bread and olive oil. you cant really go wrong. ginger is a sweet or savory spice so it can do what it wants.
id recommend a Dark & Stormy if you havent already had it. Shot of rum, lime juice (half or whole lime to your liking), 2-3 dashes of bitters, serve on the rocks, ginger beer to cover. Flavorful, higher proof rums are better. Try an agricole or demerara overproof.
a variation on the dark & stormy is the Añejo Highball. Aged rum, 1/4 oz orange curacao (grand marinier is fine), 2-3 dashes of bitters, ginger beer to cover. orange peel. on the rocks.
Want something fizzy that will fuck you up? Try a Stone Fence. This one's old. Shot of rye whiskey on the rocks, cover with dry hard cider. Not sweet! Avoid angry orchard! Goodnight.
for your second question, you asked about herbaceous and botanicals, you jumped to gin and bitters, which is a good start. but i have another recommendation before i talk about that: try a mezcal made from wild agave. It has herbal notes you would not expect from an agave spirit.
As for gin and bitters: i thought i hated gin. It was weird because I like zirbenz, which is a bitter made from stone pine fruits, and some genepis which have other pines in them. It turns out i hate London Dry gin. Another thing the Brits fucked up.
Genevers and gin made in other styles are good. I've even had a french gin made from pear distillate. That one was great. London Dry leans heavy into a profile that is tough to approach, so I'd say avoid London Dry if you want something easy to start with.
Bitters, on the other hand, is such a broad category of flavors. Your easiest way in are the most common ones. Try Campari for an easy way in, it's also a common component in many bitters cocktails. Ramazotti is pretty ubiquitous and a nice contrast to Campari. Maraschino is a good liqueur if you like cherries (it's actually made from the pits so you get heavy almond notes). Fernet is a must-have if you want the really bitter stuff. Suze is a tough one but a nice mixer. China China (cheena-cheena) is a good citrus bitters. Lastly, an anisette like Pernod is much easier to try than absinthe. You want something smoky? See if you can find Sfumato.
Now, how to try these? You can sip them on their own, but the easiest way to try bitters is to just build variations on the Americano. 1 ounce bitters, 1 ounce dry vermouth, on the rocks with seltzer to cover. Lemon wedge. Or you can skip the vermouth and just make a highball. Vary the seltzer until you get a flavor profile you like.
A word on vermouth: i don't like Dolin or Martini Rossi. I prefer Lillet, Cocci, or Perucchi if you can find it.
