BEN & IMO
The Swan Theatre, Stratford upon Avon, Tuesday 2nd April 2024
Mark Ravenhill’s new play couldn’t be further from his first one (Sh*pping and Fucking), dealing with a rather rarefied moment in British musical history. Composer Benjamin Britten has just nine months to come up with a grand opera in time for the coronation of Elizabeth II. Along comes Imogen, daughter of Gustav ‘The…

ABT (and the precarious finances of dance in the US)
If you closely follow ABT on social media, then you know that company dancers have been working under an expired contract since the fall and have recently authorized a strike. Living and working in NYC is so expensive. They need a living wage, as do the musicians, stagehands, and staff behind the scenes. Performing artists in the U.S. have it tough and need support.
That said, my friend is an ABT subscriber and with her membership, she was granted special Zoom access to a Swan Lake studio rehearsal with Catherine Hurling and James Whiteside with Susan Jaffe coaching. (There were major tech issues at first, but the video then came through beautifully.)
If you can, please consider a gift to ABT, either a one time donation in support of the dancers or an annual subscription that will give you special behind-the-scenes access to the company and its wonderful dancers, discounts on tickets and stage rehearsals.
Also, if you're in the DC area — go but tix to their upcoming run of Swan Lake at the Kennedy Center. Chloe Misseldine will make her debut as Odette/Odile.
THE BUDDHA OF SUBURBIA
The Swan Theatre, Stratford upon Avon, Wednesday 22nd May 2024
Hot on the heels of the magnificent Bluebeard, Emma Rice and Wise Children are back with this adaptation of Hanif Kureishi’s seminal novel, with Kureishi himself co-adapting. Set in the late 1970s at a time when Britain was in a mess and there was a surge in right-wing violence and ideology (sounds…
swan lake by american ballet theatre (2005) - pas de trois
erica cornejo, herman cornejo, xiomara reyes
what really jumped out at me watching this now, besides the fact that you have three powerhouse dancers (and erica and herman are also siblings) who went on to be principals, is the musicality. especially of xiomara reyes (who appears third in this clip). it's like you can see the music by watching the flow of her arms, legs and even her head in turns. just gorgeous. it's stretching out the moment between beats, playing with the timing so you're still on the beat but maybe a tiny bit faster or slower in between. not sure how to describe it. what i always aspired to
also swan lake is probably my favorite work by tchaikovsky too so i actually will watch it solely because of the music lol. the end of this pas is on the list of my favorites. so exuberant! agh. puts a big old smile on my face
My interpretation of different versions of Swan Lake:
Royal Ballet: classical core + contemporary touches, tragedy, expressive, power in play in addition to the traditional romance, Odette is fragile but with strong dignity, freedom in death
American Ballet Theatre: Classical core, more dramatic, more fairy tale like, very passionate Odette, freedom or death, all consuming love, love defeats evil even in death. Very heroic, very American.
Mariinski: Classical to the core… least expressive even in Russian standards. Impeccable technique. Almost no storytelling, only choreography. But impeccable technique. Happy ending, of course…
Bolshoi: Impeccable technique, somewhat more expressive than Marrinski. Tragic and depressive ending… Odette condemned in a body of a swan for all eternity.
Paris Opera Ballet: My personal least fav, the technique… ok maybe I’m just not into French ballet. But the PORT DE BRAS is just unbearable to me. Why do the sorcerer and the Prince have more chemistry??!!
