                             WRITING  STAR  TREK  PART  II
Despite a mixed response from audiences and critics, STAR TREK  the motion picture  (1979) was a box office success with a seemingly guaranteed audience for a sequel.
For the follow-up, Paramount selected television producer Harve Bennett to spearhead the new movie (seen above in image 5 with STAR TREK creator Gene Roddenberry who would be involved as “executive consultant” as The Motion Picture’s perceived shortcomings and difficult production were largely attributed to him).
Likewise, the film would be produced via Paramount’s television division (presumably under the thinking that the film could just as easily be sold directly to tee-vee if a theatrical release was deemed unnecessary). This was in keeping with the film’s budgetary restrictions to approximately 13 million opposed to the first feature’s attributed forty-five. (The exact budget of STAR TREK  the motion picture is actually more difficult to ascertain than has largely been reported; the $45 million price tag also includes all costs incurred by earlier attempts to set up at least 3 previous movie versions and the STAR TREK: Phase Two television series that would be the aborted new Paramount Network’s flagship, including the new show’s costs paid to teleplay writers and the creation of sets, models, props and costumes all of which would have to be re-conceived for a widescreen theatrical production).
After Jack Sowards’ and Bennett’s writing of some five screenplay drafts for the sequel produced many intriguing ideas, plots and character arcs, (and after Sam Peeples, who’d written the Original Series’ second pilot, “Where No Man Has Gone Before.” wrote a largely dissimilar new script which was rejected), the consensus was arrived at that the second film’s story had yet to find itself. Nicholas Meyer, who’d been hired as director largely on the strength of his first feature TIME AFTER TIME (1979) and was an accomplished novelist, screenwriter and “script doctor,” ultimately went through the various drafts, drew from the agreed-upon best ideas and in about twelve days (going unpaid and uncredited) wrote a problem-solving final draft that quickly became the shooting script after he addressed script concerns and contributions from Roddenberry, Shatner and Nimoy.

I was at a Wrath of Khan 40th anniversary screening in cosplay, and an older woman came up to me and said “I love your costume, I used to dress up with my girlfriends to watch Star Trek when I was your age” and holy shit. It hit me. I’m part of the FOURTH generation of female Trek fans. I’m part of their legacy. Anyways I got really emotional

Hellooooo, Sine! How are you? Been meaning to ask if you've seen Black Panther Wakanda Forever and what are thoughts on MCU Namor? :D
Alas, I have not seen it.
We were going to go see it for my wife's birthday last week but then the weather ended up being terrible, so we stayed home and watched Glass Onion instead (A+, would recommend), and in the intervening week I have basically been having a series of unpleasant migraines and going to the movies did not sound like any fun at all. So I am probably going to end up seeing it whenever it hits Disney+.
I have also not resumed almost any of my pre-pandemic social activities, so the only film I have seen in theaters in the past two years was the 40th anniversary screening of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan a couple months ago because I wasn't going to miss that and also there was basically nobody in the theater anyway. (My wife: "You want to pay money to watch Spock die on the big screen?" Me: "Yes! I want to pay money to watch Spock die on the big screen!")
I am looking forward to seeing Wakanda Forever, though! The first one was one of my favorite MCU films, and I like Namor.
(Also, I appreciate that MCU films mean that Marvel releases collected editions of relevant comics because now I finally own The Invaders in hardcover -- yes, I got the Namor cover, LOL -- which has been on my wishlist for years after I missed out on the Complete Collections, as well as the first half of Priest's BP run which everyone says is the best one and I have not yet met a 1998/Vol 3 Marvel run I did not like, so.)

“Khan, you bloodsucker! You're going to have to do your own dirty work now! Do you hear me? Do you?” “Kirk? Kirk, you're still alive, my old friend?” “Still, "old friend"! You've managed to kill just about everyone else, but like a poor marksman, you keep missing the target!” “Perhaps I no longer need to try, Admiral.”
[Khan beams the Genesis device away]
“Oh, no! Let go! He can't take it...! “
“Khan... Khan, you've got Genesis, but you don't have me. You were going to kill me, Khan. You're going to have to come down here. You're going to have to come down here” “I've done far worse than kill you. I've hurt you. And I wish to go on hurting you. I shall leave you as you left me, as you left her; marooned for all eternity in the center of a dead planet... buried alive! Buried alive...! “
“KHAAANNNN!”
[echo]
“KHAAANNNN! “

I went to see Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan in the cinema today, for it's 40th anniversary, and it was such a great experience.
Seeing older couples come in, and wondering if they'd seen the original release together. Couple of dads with their kids. A few people my age who were too young/non-existent to have seen it 40 years ago.
It was such a beautiful example of how Star Trek spans generations.
And the movie itself still holds up so well.

Using your ask box to say that i watched wrath of khan last night bc of the 40th anniversary and my twin sister had never seen it or any of the other Star Trek movies and progressively throughout the movie anytime Kirk and Spock would have a scene together she would say something like ‘why are they so close’ or ‘why is kirk talking to him in that tone’. Needless to say she had a hard time grasping the radiation scene at the end as anything related to friendship 💜💜
oh my god that's so valid of your sister

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (poster artwork by Bob Peak)
It's the 40th anniversary of this glorious film! This jewel in the crown that is Star Trek!
I want to say I remember seeing this in the theater, but that can't be true, I would've been 4, but it is laser-etched on my memory like it's always existed. My uncle, he's a huge Star Trek fan, it's all we really have in common, we see all the movies together, I think he voted for Trump, but here, here we are aligned.
Some folks online say Star Trek VI is better...those people are fools or communist agitators. They are not to be trusted.
I made friends in college by taking people over to my house from the dorms and showing them this film. 20 years later, still got those friends.
IT'S ALL JUST SO GOOD, my god, what a movie.

Conan the Barbarian 40th Anniversary Fathom Event
Conan the Barbarian 40th Anniversary Fathom Event
I remember the first time I saw “Conan the Barbarian” in a theater. It was opening weekend in May, 1982, and it was at the Edwards tri-plex in Monterey Park. While we were there to see “Conan”, one of the reasons I remember the event so well is that there were promotion postcard posters for “Star Trek II the Wrath of Khan” available at the theater, and I was quite excited about that movie. 40…
