Listen, I know we're all talking about the beautiful editing in this scene right now. However, and that might be just a guess, I think Ed is killing someone here.

First off, look at the background. They aren't fighting anymore. This isn't an action packed raid scene where everybody is fighting against one another amidst the chaos of bloodshed. It's quiet, normal even. The fighting is over, and everyone is either checking their newly acquired loot or looking at Ed, who seems to be at the center of ship. Now see where the gun is pointed - it's down,

almost as if he is shooting someone who's kneeling.

That's not a warning shot and neither is it a fight, that's an execution. Ed is killing again (by his definition of killing I mean)

And I DEFINITELY am not implying that he has become super violent and angry or something like that (which I think is a very stupid, racist take and not in line with his previous characterization at all, but that's a whole other post), tbh I think it's exactly the opposite. He isn't angry at all, that's what's worrying me. There is a stone cold dead calm in him. I think he has given up.

That is, by letting go of one of his core principles (not killing), and therefore becoming the Kraken - he is personafying himself as his father's killer, trying to become the monster other people and himself believe him to be. I mean, LOOK AT HIS CLOTHES!!

He is wearing nine guns and is very much looking like a vampire clown. He's dressing up as a caricature of himself. He is doing all of that because - deep down - he thinks that's why Stede left him. Because when he finally laid his soul bare in front of him, Stede rejected him (so that surely must mean that he saw something he did not like in there). To Ed, Stede finally "sees him now" as the monster he really is. A monster who isn't deserving of fine things, or luxuries such as not killing. So when he becomes the Kraken, after Izzy does That Whole Thing, he gives up trying to fight for them.

Thing is, the Kraken is not really killing other people, at least narratively speaking (sorry Lucius). Killing is a tool he is using to let go of the part of him that longs for Stede, love and all the fine things that he can't have - and the part of him that is just so, so hurt by not having them. The Kraken isn't killing others, it's killing Ed.

So it's no wonder that we see him kill at a wedding of all places. It's the embodyiment of everything he has ever wanted and lost so far. Extravagant dresses, good food, fancy stuff and, most of all - love.

Something that really gets to me during re-watches is Taika's line delivery of "and some maniac got rid of the wheel"!

I don't know what it is yet, and it's by far not the most unhinged thing he says or does in these 3 episodes, but something there keeps ... tugging at me.

Let's be real, the Kraken's first act HAD to be shoving Lucius off the ship. He was too powerful to be allowed to stay. The whole 'post-toe' era would have lasted fifteen minutes tops. Lucius had already 1. given Ed a stern talking to about appreciating Stede's day out and 2. given him a box of all his stuff after their first break-up. No one is wing-manning like Mr. Spriggs. He's the bestie all the boyfriend's hate, because he remembers all the shit they did.

Lucius would have called him a messy bitch, cut off his ponytail while he slept and confiscated his eyeliner.

He had to have that twink obliterated.

I wanna see someone do art of Ed and Izzy as the "Creation of Adam".

However, instead of Adam reaching to God, it's Ed reaching to Izzy- and the meaning shifts. Izzy being depicted as an angel with swallow wings and Ed from the ground/sea being depicted as the Kraken. Tentacles surround Ed and scale his outstretched arm to Izzy, wrapping around his wrist to pull him closer- AUGH!

I'm a sucker for Renaissance level fanart. So far, the OFMD fandom has spoiled me to no end and if someone can do this I'll find a way to pay you for your labors.

I think there must something connecting this scene (from Stede's fever dream back in ep. 4), where we see Blackbeard-the-legend stabbing Stede

to this one:

but I'm not sure what that link might be.

It's not a direct, in-story reference; we don't know if Stede ever told Ed the details of what he dreamt while he was recovering.

Maybe it's related to Ed's referring to Stede's crew (and possibly himself) as "Bonnet's playthings".

I mean, it seems to me that, up to his confrontation with Izzy, Ed wasn't angry at Stede, but heartbroken, and sought comfort from Stede's things (his dressing gown and his marmalade). He blamed Stede's leaving on himself, on some kind of fault of deficiency or lack on his part, he thought he simply wasn't enough for him - he thought it wasn't Stede's fault, but his.

It was only later, after he let go of his silk and (thinks he) killed Lucius, that he started getting rid of Stede's things, so maybe the flag is meant to represent Ed trying to distance himself from Stede (metaphorically stabbing his heart) and to put an end to this chapter of his life (meaning not just his relationship with him, but all the softness and the desire for a gentler life that he allowed Stede to bring to light), rather than a representation of his own bleeding heart.

...or maybe I'm just seeing things again...

how long after the crew of the revenge was stranded did stede show up? because, when you think about it, couldn’t they catch up to them quite easily? who’s to say that they couldn’t just pile up in the dinghy and board the revenge within a day or two? i feel like it would be sort of an anticlimactic reunion (the drama would be in the lengthy period of time that stede and ed don’t see each other) but it also sounds like it would work, logically?

And the guy wants to learn more about this world and Ed confused but ends up having more fun than he has in ages??

After months of work (and mostly procrastination) i finally finished Ed's *kraken era* earring. It was a challenge as I had to base myself on a bunch of moving pixels but I think it turned out nicely. It's made in gold plated bronze, with mother-of-pearl.
