BFCD Masterlist || Black Femme x Asian Character Relationships
This is a list of the ships with at least one Black female character x at least one Asian person or performer (Instances in which the characters aren't human will count as the person portraying the character's race).
As of the 4 Year Anniversary of blackfemmecharacterdependency April 30th, 2024, I am not going to be active. I decided to simply post what I had. The list is incomplete for the foreseeable future, but everyone is welcome to add on to it. Especially because I had several ships planned that I didn't get a chance to add before I had to stop maintaining the blog.
General Tags:
Black + Asian (This is for People with Black and Asian in them. They aren't necessarily ship representation, but sort of are because they are a product of such relationships and may be used for FC's if you have a character of similar makeup)
Black x Asian (This is for ships) | Black women with Asian men | Black women with Asian women | Black Woman with a Bigender Asian | Black Woman with Nonbinary Asian
Exceptions include if there is a nonbinary performer who plays the role of a female character, or vice versa, on the Black end. If there is an EXPLICITLY AFAB MALE, please do not suggest or expect them to appear.
List will include people from and with backgrounds from the countries on the map, but I don't intend to put any from Russia's portions, unless a special circumstance appears.
It was a little bit difficult for me to figure out how to curate the list (there are more of these relationships than I realized. So, for now, its mostly separated by regions of Asia, with the left portions on one list and the right portions on another. Not a perfect breakdown but everything to the left of China (west) and South is going to be the first part, and China to the east will be the second.

WRITING COMMISSIONS!!
It’s been a long time coming and rather heavily requested, so I finally (finally!) took the time to open up a Kofi and throw my hat into the ring of writing commissions.
If you don’t know me, hi! I’m Ender. I’m a fanfiction (mostly oneshots) writer for the MCYT community, primarily focused on content regarding the Life Series/Hermitcraft/Empires members. Some of my best works (as deemed by readers) include:
this limited life bad boys oneshot (hurt/comfort, jimmy + grian-centric, 4.2k)
this DSMP crimeboys oneshot (hurt/comfort, tommy-centric, 3k)
this empires s2/hermitcraft s9 ranchers oneshot (hurt/comfort, jimmy + tango-centric, 17k)
this fae AU mumbo-centric fic (mumbo-centric, 25k, 4 chapters, incomplete but now updating again)
…along with my longest and most popular fic, to write is human (c!tommy goes to hermitcraft, tommy + grian-centric, 125.5k, 22 chapters, incomplete).
If any of that stuff interests you, maybe check out my commissions! As I am an MCYT blog, all commissions will be MCYT for the foreseeable future. :D
SERVERS I WILL WRITE FOR:
Life Series (3rd Life, Last Life, Double Life, Limited Life, Secret Life, Real Life)
Jimmy and Grian focused works are my strong suit, but I can do just about anything when it comes to AUs.
Hermitcraft (Seasons 8, 9, 10)
Grian focused works are my strong suit, along with s10!Joel.
Dream SMP
Tommy, Tubbo, Ranboo, c!Wilbur, Techno, and Philza focused works are my strong suit.
QSMP (events/characters up until the end of the first Purgatory event)
Outsiders SMP (c!Owen focused)
Empires SMP S1 (e!Scott focused)
Empires SMP S2 (e!Scott, e!Jimmy, e!Pix, e!Shubble focused)
This list is subject to updates! New servers come out all the time, and some might fall out of favour. I'm also willing to write about any characters not listed, just ask!!
WHAT I WILL WRITE:
Platonic relationships
Familial relationships
Canon divergence (“This person dies instead of this person,” “this event doesn’t happen,” etc)
AUs (modern, college, coffee shop, mermaids, fantasy, etc)
Fluff
Hurt/Comfort
Angst
Whump
Horror (I’ll try my best o7)
WHAT I WON’T WRITE:
NSFW ANYTHING
Detailed gore
Torture
Romance (sorry, not yet)
Anything that I deem uncomfortable in the moment!! I reserve the right to refuse a commission if I so please.
PRICES:
1k Words or Less - $10
1k - 2k Words - $20
2k - 3k Words - $25
3k - 4k Words - $30
4k - 5k Words - $35
I’m capping it out at 5k for my own sake. It might increase once I have more consistent writing habits, but, for now, that is the absolute limit. If I end up going over the words you commissioned, I will not charge more (because that would be unfair). I’m also only having five slots open at a time so I can actually complete things in a timely fashion.
Payments must be made directly through Kofi! When requesting, please give as specific of a description as you need for the fic. If you just want something set in an AU or something general (“ranchers domestic fluff,” “monoduo bonding,” “Bolas Rojas fantasy AU,” etc), that’s perfectly fine, but expect it to take longer since I’ve got to come up with the idea from scratch!
Given that I am in college, it may take a while for your commission to be completed. If a month has passed and your commission isn’t at least 2/3rds of the way done, you’ll receive a full refund.
And here's the link (again)! Thank you for supporting me! :D

lawlight fic recs [3]
lawlight fic recs [1]
lawlight fic recs [2]
let's give some love to the fics that are still in the writers' WIP folders. and don't say I didn't warn you--I'm making it clear here and now exactly what you can expect from them.
**I plan on updating this list for the foreseeable future, so remember to check this original post on my blog for updates!**
Rating: Mature - Explicit
Status: Incomplete
Other: mostly Top!L and Bottom!Light, moderate to heavy plot details, canon divergent, very messy relationship (because they're messy people), ALL multi-chapter fics, mostly either L or Light's third-person-limited POV
'Behind the Lens' by @arcadevia (E)
if you're looking for a college/university AU to quench your thirst, you're in luck--this one's a three-course meal with all the trimmings. a meet-not-so-cute at a college film club meeting leads to mutual animosity and undeniable curiosity. L is hiding a dark past and Light is obsessed with uncovering the truth. there is an adorable kitten that I would die for and a beautiful garden tucked away on campus, which is an appropriate choice of scenery as the feelings between these two begin to blossom. (this author’s written a lot of great stuff and is regularly active on ao3, so go check out his work!)
'Every Day a Little Death' by pearltea (E)
finally, some lawlight-style in vino veritas! don't mind the deus ex machina, these drunken confessions and the steamy night that follows are well worth a read.
'Glitter and Gold' by booklovertwilight (E)
did you order a multi-chapter stripper!Light AU that's heavy on plot with a side of exquisitely vindictive Kira? no? well you should've! my favorite part about this fic is definitely the tango L and Light dance as they circle one another, waiting for the other's moment of weakness in order to pounce.
'where evil grows' by ghastlymint (E)
L has some interesting ideas about what the word 'rivalry' means, and no regard for discretion. he insists that rivals can never be in a successful romantic relationship, but in the same breath, that being lovers with a rival isn't off the table. from there, the plot spirals out of control on a beautifully chaotic canvas. if you're looking for a fic that walks the line between absurd and on the business end of a knife, I highly recommend this one.
'Sweet Little Lies' by NeonPancakes
oh boy, where to even start? I'm nowhere near caught up on this fic, but the premise--although it paints a bleak picture of L's situation--alone is enough to draw in any reader with good taste. Light may be Kira, but L has secrets of his own, accompanied by a traumatic past that haunts him to this day. this read is on the slower side, making it difficult to parse out exactly which plot details are most relevant, but it's a wonderful choice for those rainy days when you have nothing to do except curl up on the couch and read.
'Shades of Light' by BelladonnaVeilsin (M)
Light figures out that he used to be Kira. but he cares about L too much to allow Kira to win, and he devises a plan--training his mind, body, and heart to protect L so that even when he gets his memories back, he won't be able to end the detective's life. I was immediately drawn in by the creativity of the premise--this author has managed to make Light's actions believable, and I have faith that if/when we get an update, his motives will also finally be made clear.

MAYDAY, MAYDAY, DO YOU COPY ME?
In 1914, the Great War brought with it the very first aerial strikes and dogfights, changing war as we know it. Thus began the race for dominion over the sky, and eventually, the cosmos above. In 1919, a very desperate man found himself alone in an endless void, and resolved to fill it with stars.
In 2049,
In 2081, the Invincible II launched into deep space, with the mission of founding a colony. Captained by an intrepid individual and staffed with a talented and sometimes eccentric crew, the mission was
The colonists were
And the Captain
And
I’M FEELING INCOMPLETE IN THE WORLD YOU MADE FOR ME.
Mark was, presumably, born. Most people are. His dossier lists his birthday, somewhere, he’s pretty sure. He’s also very likely to have grown up — that usually comes next. Statistically, he grew up suburban — or maybe inner city. Perhaps rural, he’s always liked adventure and wide-open spaces. Or did he move around a lot? He’s never happy when settled in one place for long. Always seeking something new, always after the next thing.
He knows he went away to a university. His dossier lists that too. Maybe he went to get out of a dinky small town. find love? escape a bad situation. run away from her. seek new experiences. He knows he found what he’s looking for, because he’s here now. The Invincible II is a beautiful ship, and she’s all his. Sleek, perfect, purring under his careful work and steady hands — he built her by hand piece by piece. He remembers welding each one carefully into place before they ever left spacedock.
(She’s a big ship. That must have taken a long time.)
(Has he ever been that patient in his entire life?)
There’s Celci, the smug and irritating overseer of cryogenics. There’s Gunther, chief of asteroid defense systems and general security, smooth and sharp. There’s Burt, head of reactor core and amateur poet. There’s more too — crew members and colonists with bright futures ahead of them.
Everyone knows the Captain of the Invincible II. They’re strong, intelligent, decisive, undeniably handsome and/or beautiful — and they’re Mark’s to guide and care for. He’s the head engineer after all! He’s happy to act as the liaison between the Captain and crew. It’s a great honor! Finally his talent and tireless hard work can be recognized by someone!
Everything’s smooth sailing. They toast with champagne. They ready for cryosleep.
And then
Then when they’re underway,
There’s a story pilots tell, about a certain point of altitude. When you fly high enough, you can see the curve of the surface of the Earth in the distance. The world takes on a new and terrifying dimension. Previously flat characters become dynamic. Words raise from the page and find their way into the living world. New life is breathed into long stagnant work. Authors, narrators, and actors become gods.
In those places, you can escape gravity’s pull. Reality becomes malleable. There’s little meaningful difference between the imagined and the material. Stories can be spoken into existence with hardly a thought. Worlds born and burnt, life brought from void.
What is a character but a fragment of the creator’s soul?
Mark’s the head engineer aboard the Invincible II. It’s his job to foresee problems with the ship. There shouldn’t be problems with the ship.
There are, in fact, problems aboard the Invincible II. A few of them, actually. But the Captain does a great job of guiding him through every step of the way.
There are, in fact, no problems aboard the Invincible II, until the Captain dooms them all to fail.
There are, in fact, no problems aboard the Invincible II, save the Captain and their paranoid insistence on something out to get them.
Mark was the head engineer aboard the Invincible II. Now, he’s little more than a slave.
Mark’s the head engineer aboard the Invincible II. It’s his job to foresee problems with the ship. There shouldn’t be problems with the ship.
(Does this feel familiar?)
You don't realize this place is a dream.
You have a never-ending starring role.
And then
(Have we been here before?)

oh how the turn tables: Fic recs of Jaskier saving Geralt
I’ve read a lot of good fics in the Witcher fandom -- including a prodigious and excellent amount of Jaskier whump -- but I realized that some of the ones I like best are the ones where the chairs are switched, and Jaskier has to take care of Geralt for a change. Either by easing his way through social trouble, taking care of him after a fight gone bad, or anything else that threatens to bring the Witcher low. It also doubles as an (incomplete) list of my favorite fics and authors in the fandom!
I would of course greatly appreciate additions to this post (among others I’m certain there was another fic where Geralt took a Cat potion and then had to exit the cave immediately, and Jaskier cared for him while he was blind from it, that I’d love to find again.) Please add away!
Links only at the top, full summaries and excerpts beyond the cut.
An Incomplete Happiness - BlossomsintheMist, M, 22k
How to Care for your Witcher - Funkspiel, T, 13k
faith in transience - unconscious, E, 12k
Ivy on the Hill - chaya, E, 20k
The Witcher Wolf - im_fairly_witty, T, 10k
a dying curse (you are, as of all your kind, no more than a beast) - mikkeneko, T, 10k
home is nowhere, therefore you - Ark, E, 18k
Meet Death Sitting - bomberqueen17, M, 46k
An Incomplete Happiness - Geralt is nearly killed while on a hunt and relies on Jaskier to drag him back to the safety and comfort of a town and treat his wounds. Complete.
“You are awfully nonchalant,” Jaskier said, a levity in his voice that sounded forced.
“Without you here, I’d be sleeping under a bush with Roach beside me for warmth,” Geralt said after a moment. “I’d sleep there for about four days, hoping it didn’t keep raining, until the fever ran its course, and hope I had water and food enough in my pack, because otherwise I’d have to crawl far enough to find fresh water and then collapse there. It’s happened before.” It would again. “And still, I’d live. If it was worse than that, I’d let Roach find me aid, and hope I lived.”
How to Care for your Witcher - An episodic fic with each chapter focusing on another fix that Geralt gets into, that Jaskier tries to help him with. Ongoing.
Geralt licked his lips – dry and cracked, another side effect of some of his potions, Jaskier had noticed over time. The bard reached for his canteen as smoothly as he could without jarring the other man. He unscrewed the top slowly, quietly, but not entirely, and gently pressed it into Geralt’s hands. The witcher appeared as grateful for the bottle as he was for the fact that Jaskier had left the littlest bit of it left for him to unscrew on his own; the smallest illusion of self-control. Jaskier watched the way he drank from the skin of water and realized with a feeling akin to a stone dropping in his stomach that all this time Geralt had been thirsty and had not been able to see enough to find his own canteen in his pack. He had likely quenched the worst of it while cleaning himself in the river, but he had never asked for help after. Not once. And Jaskier had missed the significance of the few times the Witcher’s hands had subtly fumbled around his saddle, searching for it.
faith in transience - Geralt gets poisoned by a drug that makes him susceptible to suggestion. Fortunately, the one making the suggestions is Jaskier. Complete.
With the effects of the potions rattling his bones and the venom intertwining he can’t fucking think. He has to lie down. Meditate. Focus his energy on regulating the magic and the pain until his metabolism flushes it out. If it goes uncontrolled it could kill him.
“Geralt? Geralt, can you hear me?” The voice on the other side of the landslide is faint and thready with anxiety.
If he sleeps here he would awaken cold, starving, and exhausted, and potentially even more poisoned if these corpses bloat and pop. He would survive. But perhaps it isn’t the most efficient choice.
Perhaps it’s a choice he may have made were the bard not here. Jaskier’s voice buries deep in his gut and tugs at him like it has magical properties of its own. Like the slaughter, it’s instinctual. Go to him.
Ivy on the Hill - Geralt has been doing his best to keep Jaskier at arm’s length, but after Jaskier saves him from death by drowning or poison or hypothermia after a bad hunt, the two become closer. Complete, with sequels.
Geralt realizes with a bolt of suppressed panic that he can't move. It's not the weight, it's the... it's something in his blood. Weight. The armored arachas was on top of him. It isn't now. This is something soft and warm, something not leaking viscera onto him.
He breathes in again. Human. Male. Sweat and fear. Underneath that, familiar musky tones. Familiar. Another image comes unbidden to his mind, of carrying Jaskier to the healer as he choked from the djinn. Jaskier's on him.
"Are you-" Jaskier lifts his head from Geralt's shoulder. His voice thrums from his chest to Geralt's, only the pendant and Jaskier's stupid chemise between them. It feels uncomfortably intimate. There's a shuffle under blankets and two warm (blessedly warm) fingers press against his throat. "Okay, that... that feels almost fast enough to be normal, which means you're awake, right?"
The Witcher Wolf - Jaskier runs across an injured wolf in a forest and is moved to help it; the wolf joins him on his travels. The wolf is Geralt, of course. Complete, with sequels.
The wolf snarled, probably just because Jaskier’s fingers had reached the matted blood.
“Alright, so here’s my terrible plan.” Jaskier said, ignoring the snarl. Another unconscious habit he’d developed from hanging around Geralt apparently. “I’m going to try and remove this arrow, which is going to hurt terribly, and then I’m going to patch you up. I’d be extremely grateful if you didn’t dismember me in any way while I do, but if you can’t help yourself I suppose that’s fair.”
a dying curse (you are, as of all your kind, no more than a beast) - When Geralt is brought low by a curse that takes his mind, Jaskier cares for him.
Geralt cocked his head to the side, a gesture so perfectly Geralt-like that he was already anticipating the snarky barb that would follow it... and nothing. Geralt said nothing. Not because he couldn't hear Jaskier, or because he had lost his voice, but...
"You can't understand me, can you?" Jaskier said softly. Geralt just stared at him, steady, wordless, empty. "You can't understand... anything."
home is nowhere, therefore you - Geralt is overwhelmed and captured by a faerie court, and Jaskier wins a boon from the queen by playing and singing all night until the sun rises. His boon, of course, is Geralt.
"Your pardon, gracious queen," Jaskier says. By the way he perspires, Geralt can tell that they're both fucked. If Geralt could groan, he'd groan. "I believe the agreement was that I might have the pick of your treasures to carry off, if I could please you with my little musics until dawn."
She narrows her eyes. Fuck. "Don't be a fool, boy. This ring will bring you fame and fortune beyond your wildest dreams."
"Be that—be that as it may," Jaskier says, and squares his shoulders, "I'm afraid I really have my heart quite set on—that." He points, his hand only a little unsteady, and indicates the low wooden footstool upon which Geralt is miserably crouched for the foreseeable future. Gasps from the watching, glittering court of riveted fairies.
Meet Death Sitting - Geralt is attacked by a particularly nasty critter and needs Jaskier first to kill it, then to find shelter for him when he’s brought low by the toxicity of the potions he took to combat it. Complete, with sequels.
“It’s a mornat,” Geralt said, nearly whispering. His eyes looked like a wounded animal’s, distant and desperate. “It gets into a living body and takes it over, kills it, and then animates it after death until it can find a new host." He had to stop to catch his breath. "If I were human it would have taken over by now, but I’m almost out of potions to hold it back. You’ve got to cut it out of me, stab the silver knife through its spine, put it in the iron pot, tie the lid on, and bury it.”
“I,” Jaskier said, staring in horror at the -- the thing , it was deforming Geralt’s torso, and Geralt looked fucking terrible, ribs standing out in a way Jaskier had never seen before. He was dying. “Won’t that kill you?”
“I might survive,” Geralt said, characteristically unconcerned. “The easier option is that you put the silver knife through my spine and then both of you run like hell.”

SNK Character Death Ratings
Hey, all!
Long time no see!
SNK’s end is nearing, so in this post I’m going to rate the chances of each character dying.
“Die” in this post means they are dead by the last page of the manga and are not indicated to die in the events immediately thereafter.
“Deaths”, for example, that are explained to happen after the events of the story are counted as surviving. As such, titan shifter death clocks do not count.
Chances of death will be rated on a sliding scale:
Safe Dead --> Likely Dead --> Lean Dead --> Toss Up --> Lean Alive --> Likely Alive --> Safe Alive
Let’s do it.
Eren Jeager: Likely Alive
Yeah, I think Eren will probably live.
In Attack on Titan, people only survive by making harsh sacrifices, and there is no way I’m taking time to establish that.
This has lead most of the fandom to believe the final sacrifice that will have to be made is killing Eren.
But, like, it’s really not much of a sacrifice?
Eren isn’t the guy who carried the boulder at Trost, anymore. Nor is he the guy who took down the Colossal Titan at Shighanshina.
Eren is the guy who murdered humanity. “Warmongerer,” “murderer,” “traitor,” all these words describe him far better than “hero,” “friend,” or “Chad.”
So who cares if he dies?
Good riddance!
After everything that’s happened, I cannot see Eren’s death being realistically portrayed as a sacrifice. Frankly, the thought is laughable.
Eren is practically barking about how the enemies outside need to be crushed with extreme prejudice. He’s basically a Trumpist now.
All that said, it’s still believable that Eren will die before the end of the story.
Maybe Eren will die in the final battle, and SNK will just sputter to an end because the world is shit now, and any survivors will have to weather mass starvation, lack of shelter, no medicine, and who knows what else.
If the series tries to spin that as the beginning of a bright future full of hope, I’m going to laugh.
I also think it’s possible Eren kills his friends and lives. It has been foretold that Eren will win, whatever that means.
This “win” that Eren foresaw was probably incomplete, because that’s just how storytelling works, and we’ll learn that he actually “lost”. He doesn’t have to die, though, for that to happen.
We don’t actually know what Eren’s win condition is, other than that it entails Historia living (as in she’s still breathing when this is all over, her actual desire to live notwithstanding) and Eren’s enemies dying.
Eren’s enemies are dead or will die soon. Even if the Alliance kills him, they have nothing to return to. The world is dead. At this point, they’re fighting solely on principle.
Good storytelling usually emphasizes karma and just desserts.
…I think there’s a good chance Historia will die by the end, if only to ensure Eren doesn’t get away with what he’s done.
But Eren himself doesn’t have to die for this scenario to play out.
On balance, I think Eren living is slightly more likely than not.
Historia Reiss: Likely Dead
I’m really sorry to all the Historia stans reading this. Historia can’t catch a break, and I don’t think it’s going to get better.
Historia’s role as the damsel in distress so far has only made one thing clear: she doesn’t matter.
She’s a hot girl who exists to be placed in danger and spur everyone to action.
Historia has been nothing but fodder for Eren’s character development. I think it only makes sense for that trend to continue.
If Eren, the tragic villain, is favored to live, then storytelling logic dictates that Historia, the villain’s muse who inspires him to murder, must be favored to die.
If Isayama gave a damn about her character, it wouldn’t be like this, but this is the world we live in.
Cruel, yet oh, so beautiful.
Mikasa Ackerman: Lean Dead
If Eren is slightly favored to live, then Mikasa’s chances aren’t too great.
A tension is being built up between Eren and Mikasa: between Eren’s desire to wipe out his enemies, and Mikasa’s struggle to cope with that.
The reason Eren is likelier to live than Mikasa is because while Eren in eminently capable of throwing away everything precious to him, Mikasa…isn’t. Like, at all.
Mikasa has always been clingy towards Eren, but I will her credit: multiple times in this arc, people have openly talked about killing Eren, and Mikasa has not tried to murder them.
Mostly.
When Mikasa gets told to go somewhere else to contribute to the mission, it’s because they can’t trust her to come through for them if it falls to her to kill Eren.
Eren is prepared to kill Mikasa, but Mikasa still struggles with needing to let Eren go.
In this situation that is a critical advantage.
If Mikasa is supposed to fail to overcome her love for Eren, the series will almost certainly seek to highlight that by having her confront Eren directly and fail at the moment of truth.
If Mikasa is supposed to succeed in letting Eren go…well, Isayama may decide to kill her anyway.
The moment Mikasa resolves definitively to let Eren go, her character arc is complete.
After that, all bets are off.
Maybe she resolves to kill Eren, but fails anyway.
Maybe she kills Eren, and then dies. The world is cruel, and thanks to the Rumbling, it is also now ugly. Mikasa’s whole life has been crushed. Her dream was a simple rural life. That’s not possible anymore.
Like. In any form.
I think an ending where she dies after fulfilling her duty is not out of the question.
Armin Arlert: Lean Alive
If the Alliance has a good chance of failing, that means they all have a good chance of dying. I do, however, think he has a better chance than the others of living.
I think that with Paradis’ enemies wiped out, the Walldians will be in the mood for a more level-headed leader.
The thing about nationalists like Floch and Eren is that they’re only popular during times of desperation. After the people feel secure again (or the nationalists destroy everything and people realize how much they suck) they’ll usually gravitate towards a more traditional leader.
So I’m saying Armin could be the Joe Biden to Eren’s Donald Trump.
Basically, if Armin isn’t playing some leadership role post-Rumbling, he’s dead. That can happen even if Eren wins, though. That’s why I give him about even odds.
Now that Armin is in P A T H S, he’ll probably try to speak to Eren again. If SNK has any final reveals about Eren’s motivations, it’d happen here.
…I really don’t want the pregnancy to be real.
I really don’t want it to be Eren’s surprise motivation.
But if it’s coming, it’ll happen here.
I don’t know what Armin will do if Eren drops something like that on him.
Armin…isn’t as capable as people think he is.
His attempts to negotiate a peaceful resolution with the world were flailing and unsuccessful.
I don’t know how he’s going to negotiate with a dad who’s convinced that violence is the only viable option to protect his kid.
When Armin is the one who failed to broker a peaceful resolution to begin with.
When Armin tried to convince Connie to back down from violence, he was immediately shut down by Connie, and it was laughably easy!
Armin can’t even negotiate with CONNIE.
That’s the intellectual firepower humanity is relying on.
Don’t expect him to win.
(NOTE: Huh, you know, I never realized until now, but this series has totally ruined every major character. Armin is a useless idiot, Mikasa probably needs someone to hold her hand the rest of the finale, Historia’s been sidelined. What happened?)
Reiner Braun: Lean Dead
Ok, I know everyone thought Reiner would die last time around, but this time…
Eh, I think Reiner will die this time.
Reiner’s character arc is basically over. He’s found a new source of motivation in the form of Gabi and Falco, and he’s made peace with all the people he’s hurt.
There may be a scene coming where he reconciles with his mother. That would require him surviving the final battle, so I have him down as only leaning dead.
Annie Leonhardt: Lean Alive
Annie has a better chance at living than most everyone else, but that’s only because many scenarios where she lives or dies are easily foreseeable.
Maybe Annie is able to meet her father again.
Or maybe her father will die, and Annie decides to move on from her past and fully commits to Armin.
Annie’s character is in a different place compared to the others. Most of the other characters’ arcs have been played out or will be by the time the series ends. Annie’s isn’t.
Annie has a burgeoning romance with Armin. And it’s a romance that could lead to children. We all know how much this series looooooves children.
I think Annie has a good chance of making it out alive, especially if Armin does too.
Jean Kirstein: Likely Dead
Sorry, but I think Jean is destined for the glue factory.
Jean had a chance to live a long, peaceful life when Floch offered it to him. He passed it up.
You might think Jean should be rewarded for his selflessness, but we all need to keep in mind that one of the themes of Attack on Titan is that if you end up sacrificing yourself for others….you end up sacrificing yourself.
Jean made his choice. He’s not coming back.
Connie Springer: Likely Dead
Connie is going to die for the same reason Jean is: it’s the path he chose.
He chose to make his mother proud by fighting for humanity, even if it’s a suicide mission.
It’s the path he chose, and that’s it.
Pieck Finger: Toss Up
Pieck is something of a wild card.
I list her as a toss up because she seems closest to Gabi, and I think Gabi has a good chance of living. If Gabi is going to survive, though, she’s going to need a new mother figure. Pieck would be great in that role.
At the same time, her character is not particularly important. I could easily see her dying just to give the final battle a higher death count.
Gabi Braun: Safe Alive
Gabi is one of the likeliest ones to live.
She’s not directly participating in the battle, she’s safe from the rumbling, she has a burgeoning romance, and she’s a kid.
Kids have died in Attack on Titan, but never one who’s a major character.
As a child, Gabi represents the next generation; the future of humanity. To fulfill that role, she needs to live to the end.
Falco Grice: Likely Alive
Falco is a kid, too, so ofc he’s bound to live.
Not only is he a kid like Gabi, he’s also in love with Gabi. I highly doubt this series would end with a burgeoning romance cut tragically short.
Individually, Falco and Gabi represent something important in Attack on Titan: the future. Future leaders, future workers, future caregivers. They are humanity’s future.
But as a couple, they represent something even more important than that: posterity. The promise of an ongoing future for humanity.
Falco and Gabi love each other. When they get older, they’ll marry, and they’ll probably have kids.
Attack on Titan always emphasizes needing to move forward. Falco+Gabi is how humanity moves forward from the Rumbling.
Levi Ackerman: Lean Alive
Yeah, really.
I think Levi is going to make it.
He’s a safe distance from the battle, he knows he can’t fight, and he knows that he’d fail to kill Zeke even if he tried.
What we saw in 136 was Levi starting to make peace with the fact he is not going to fulfill Erwin’s final order to him. He’s starting to see the big picture: his role was to create a better world for humanity’s posterity.
That’s why he chose Armin over Erwin. Erwin had played his part and earned his rest. Giving Armin the injection was a generational passing of the torch.
In light of that, Erwin’s final order doesn’t seem so important.
So if Levi stays rational, he likely won’t have to do anything that would risk his life.
He may well make it out of this.
Zeke Jeager: Lean Alive
Zeke is probably going to live just because he’s the one who’s been most obsessed with death. It’d be weird if Attack on Titan (which theoretically celebrates life) were to grant Zeke his death wish.
If Zeke has been imprisoned in some sense by Eren, then he’ll probably live on in some form, so he may not live in an “on earth” kind of way, but alive is alive, so I’m counting it that way.
Everyone on Fort Salta (inc. Onyankopon, Mr. Leonhardt, and Ms. Braun): Likely Dead
This one wasn’t hard to figure out.
Their lives are directly contingent on Eren losing, so if Eren is likely to win, that must mean they are likely to die.
It would be sad for Karina and Mr. Leonhardt to not reunite with their kids, but that’s not a major problem in the grand scheme of things.
Miss Kiyomi and Yelena: Likely Alive
They’re stranded in the middle of the ocean, but if Falco survives, he can come back and rescue them.
I think they’ll be alright.
Ymir Fritz: Safe Dead
She’s already dead, silly, so of course that’s her rating. :P

author interview
thank you @lechatrouge673 for tagging me :)
tagging @its-sixxers @glowstickia @rhetoricalrogue @gingerbreton @bluegrasskitty @corvyknight @ungenue
Name: Evie / Ev
Fandom(s): Fallout, Elder Scrolls, Dragon Age (not a lot, lately), Mass Effect (don’t write for it, though, oddly enough)
Where You Post: Tumblr and Ao3 (under speedgriffon)
Most Popular One-Shot: Probably something for Dragon Age, likely something smutty I wrote for my Inquisitor and Cullen ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Most Popular Multi-Chapter Story: Based off tumblr stats and Ao3, it’s still my Modern AU for my Cousland, Evelyn and Alistair, The Way You Make Me Feel, which I wrote in 2015. 2015! Feels like a lifetime ago. Might as well be. It’s my only other complete multi-chapter story, but man, I’ve definitely grown as a writer since then. (still holds a special place in my heart)
Favorite Story You Wrote: Choosing one is wildly unfair, and incredibly difficult considering I have 111 separate works posted to Ao3 (and that’s not counting prompt collections with separate chapters). Though, I am incredibly proud of Salvation is a Last Minute Business (Noir AU), if only because it’s an idea I’ve been wanting to write for years, and not only did I finally write it, I finished it!
How You Choose Your Titles: I either pick it first, inspired by the theme of what I’m writing, or I struggle to figure it out last, and choose a random piece of dialogue. For Noir AU, chapter titles (and the story title) all came from classic (1940s-1950s) Noir film quotes, which was super fun.
Complete: Uh, I don’t mean to sound arrogant but I am prolific in the sense I have a lot of completed works. Mostly because I’m a one-shot writer, but still. 100+ on Ao3, including prompt collections that hold 30+ chapters each, so there’s a lot. I don’t plan on stopping/slowing down any time soon, though I think I’ll be focusing on chapter-fics for the foreseeable future.
Incomplete: I have only one half-started WIP, everything else is just listed as an idea on my “WIP Idea” list on the Google Doc drive. I try not to have too many started works at once, unless it’s a chapter fic and a one-shot I’m working on.
Do You Outline?: Yes, even for one-shots, but especially for larger projects. Outlining is the most important thing I can do for my writing.
Coming Soon/Not Yet Started: At least for the rest of July, maybe something small and fluffy for Butch and Rosie. Then, I’ll be working on some side-stories for Noir AU to post throughout August while I work on outlining and drafting the sequel to said Noir AU. Because that’s the next big thing for me! :) Whoo!
Do You Accept Prompts?: Yes! I have scaled back on rebloging prompt lists, but if anybody wants to send me an idea, I may be inclined to write it out if I have the time. I love hearing about what people would like to see me write :)
Upcoming Story You Are Most Excited To Write: More Noir AU in general. My mind hasn’t stopped running with Mads and Deacon 1950s shenanigans, but I think the first side story I want to write is something romantic for them, because they’ve deserved it. Breakfast in bed? Deacon just really wants to cook her breakfast, okay? (But also maybe that Salem ghost story trip HA).

Update
Okay, I think it’s about time I give a small update on what I’ve been doing the past few weeks, what I’m doing now, and what I plan to do in the coming months. I said on Twitter I would make a post about it like a month ago and then of course I completely forgot to actually do it. Anyway, on to the important stuff:
What I’ve been doing:
After the second demo for Knight & Witch back in September I was feeling burned out and frustrated with the game and with myself. I rushed the demo out, in a very buggy and incomplete state, and had to go back to fix it many times before people could actually get to the end. I didn’t have enough time before the deadline, so I skipped playtesting almost completely, which led to a huge number of bugs and just things not working properly.
Even after fixing (almost) everything wrong with the demo from a technical standpoint, the feedback I received was very mixed, and worst of all, I agreed with it completely. Controlling the characters feels clunky and slow; attacks (especially the Witch’s spells) aren’t fun to perform; putting lots of enemies everywhere is not good; a certain puzzle can soft-lock the game if you leave the other character behind; ironically, leaving a character behind makes the game easier because you can stop worrying about them running into traps or getting killed; at the same time, the character you left behind might get attacked while off-screen... The list goes on (and on) but you get the idea.
So anyway, the rush for the demo didn’t pay off and I was feeling down. I needed a break, and I wanted to pursue other projects to kind of relax and take my mind off of it for a while.
So I decided to pick and old project of mine back up: if you’ve been following me for a long time you might remember ColorFall, a mobile game I was working on around 2 years ago. Back then I was close to done but I stopped right before publishing (I’m not completely sure why, maybe I was just bored with it). Anyway, with the programming skills I acquired during this time, I managed to do some major upgrades to ColorFall, starting from refactoring the whole code base to be more efficient, performant and extensible. From there, I went ahead and added some new gameplay features such as special ball types, each with its own effect, implemented online leaderboards and greatly improved the UI design to feel more responsive and ‘juicy’. At this point the game was (and still is) ready to be published, both on PC and Android. The only thing still missing are the sound effects, which I’m waiting for from the same person who I commissioned for the music.
What I’m doing now:
As you can probably guess, working on ColorFall wasn’t really hard or taxing, and it was actually refreshing to get into a project where I could make quick and steady progress, something I had been missing for a while. So in the mean time, I also spent time thinking and thinking and thinking about how to fix the gameplay for Knight & Witch, how to make the combat deeper and more engaging, and just dumping every idea I had regarding the game on a paper notebook I have just for this purpose. Recently, after releasing a game for agdg’s Halloween Jam (SpooQuest), I finally decided to go back and resume work on K&W. Among my priorities, I wanted to finally let the Knight use his shield to guard himself and the Witch from enemy attacks. I don’t have much to show, and in the last few days I’ve been busy with other things so progress is slow, but I think I’m starting to see the path in front of me again.
Also in the last few months I’ve been coming back time and time again to the idea of asking for help to a programmer. But this time it’s different (sort of): now I’m not as non-confident in my coding skills as I used to be. I think I can code all the features I need for my game. However the thing is, I also want to work on the art. So like, I can, and want to, do both things, but obviously this means the game will take a long time to complete. Having a programmer by my side would mean that while he’s coding, I can make models, thus ‘doubling’ the pace of progress.
Anyway you know how it goes, it’s not easy for me to just leave the code-side to somebody else so for now I’m just going to keep working by myself, asking for help only when I need.
What I plan to do next:
Now, what will I be doing in the future? Well, obviously I will keep working on Knight & Witch. I have quite a lot of features planned that I couldn’t implement in the past either due to time constraints or due to my lack of knowledge/skill. I’m feeling slightly more confident now, and the feedback I’ve received with the last demo put me in the right direction I think. As I said above, progress is going slow and the fact that I will be doing it alone, at least in the foreseeable future, means things will take time. A lot of it.
I remember posting my New Year’s Resolutions around a year ago, and I planned to make a ‘real’ game by myself and publish it by the end of 2018. Well, I guess that’s not going to happen. But it’s for the best. A lot of things happened, the scope of the game grew a whole bunch while I was developing it, and for several weeks I had other matters keeping me away from gamedev.
Now with the wall of text out of the way, I will make a follow-up post with images and videos of ColorFall and Knight & Witch to kind of show what changed since my last post here.
There’s also another thing I should talk about, but I’l do so in a separate post to keep things more focused.

Once and New Girl Post Series
The series finales for what I would consider two of my most important fandoms are airing soon. So, here’s a little update of what to expect from my blog after that point, because I don’t know why...
Tl;dr: This blog’s activity with New Girl and Once will continue as normal (or hopefully increase) after the series finales.
New Girl: I know I’ve been less involved lately, but I’ve got quite a bit of original Pepperwood related content already planned, that I very much plan to actually finish and post. Like... gifs, fics, it’s a lot.
Once: Killian Jones is still very much alive and well, as far my obsessive brain is concerned.
I will still be updating @thelifeandtimesofkillianjones into forever the foreseeable future. Because I love it and it’s really pretty and anyone who isn’t following it is really missing out.
But more importantly, I’ve got a shit load of original content in the wings, and I plan to make solid use of my summer break for that. Here is a vague and incomplete list:
Metas - Most will look something like critical literary analysis, because that’s how I roll.
Fics - including but not limited to:
An angst ridden Killian fic that I’ve been “working on” for about a year now and that I will finish and post even if it kills me and everyone who reads it
A naval years, 5x15 canon divergence, Jones bros fic (also angsty)
A sci-fi space au CS fic (v fun, much snark)
So many Killian prequels of all shapes, sizes, and flavors (including angst), @thelifeandtimesofkillianjones exists for a reason lads.
A few more CS AUs (ghost!killian, Jane Austen, etc) if the mood strikes me
I like to daydream about writing my own version of the entire show...
Probably some Knightrook stuff, because they’re amazing, and I love them
There’s more, but I don’t want to scavenge through my notes.
Manips - I’ve got a few half-finished manips I definitely want to finish and several more that I’ve got planned.
It’s unfortunate bad timing on my part (or maybe it isn’t), that I’m planning to be full speed ahead on two shows that are over, but… It is what it is.
I’ve worked to find the handful of people in both fandoms that I really like and respect and who aren’t insane. I like to think the feeling is a least somewhat mutual, despite my lack of understanding of online social etiquette tendency to hover and lurk on the periphery. There are several people in both fandoms that I very much hope to stay in touch with and continue getting to know beyond the end of these shows. I just wish I’d gotten here sooner and been able to flail with all of you for a lot longer. But, I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one sticking around, so... Yay for shows that inspire creativity and make friends and all that jazz! or something...
#shut up fraddit#i guess this is like a publicly accountable sign post for myself?#somebody shove this in my face in may#and yell get to work bitch!

My weekly roundup of things I am up to. Topics include renewable energy costs, land use and biodiversity, and O’Neill cylinders.
Cost of Renewable Energy
There are frequently times, and now appears to be such a time, when the press is full of “cheap renewables” articles.
First there is renewable energy for electricity production, primarily wind and solar. I know the solar PV levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) value in particular I had been using is too high, but because updating the LCOE figures would necessitate redoing many of the graphics, I have hesitated in doing so. This week I finally decided to bite the bullet and update the LCOE figures, though only for images and data going forward, not for things in the past until they get redone naturally.
Wind and solar power is indeed less expensive this year than a few years ago, but finding reliable numbers is a challenge. The difficulty is not in finding any numbers, but in making a wise judgment among the many numbers that are available. For now I am using the EIA figures. There are also the recent Our World In Data numbers that have gained prominence, but the OWID analysis pulls data from Lazard, which has come in for some criticism.
There are all sorts of design issues to consider with the LCOE metric. Aside from which data is reliable, there is the question of whether system effects, such as land acquisition, transmission cost, and siting, are accounted for. There is also the question of greenhouse gases and other externalities, which I am treating separately. It is also important that LCOE numbers do not incorporate subsidies, as I am focused on societal rather than private costs, but defining subsidies is trickier than one would think.
I am in the process since yesterday of revising the Hydrogen section, which is also getting a bit outdated and should be upgraded anyhow. I know the production cost figures will be replaced, and they will probably be replaced with something that makes electrolyzed hydrogen look a bit more feasible, but I’m not sure exactly what yet. I am leaning toward the IEA’s recent figures, though I will at least mention some others. I don’t think this reconsideration will cause me to revise my basic conclusion that electrolyzed hydrogen is not feasible at this time except for specialized applications that require high purity, but it might be in the future, and I want to try to ascertain that future date.
Finally, there are is the concept of an HVDC grid in the United States, which I expect to be an important part of a renewable energy future. I have some new figures that show an HVDC grid would be a wise investment. The barrier is more a matter of politics than cost, which is a highly nontrivial issue that deserves a more thorough treatment than I have given it so far.
The social cost of carbon remains on my revision list, and I hope to tackle that issue this week.
Land Use and Biodiversity
I had a Land Use and Biodiversity section on the website, which I have split apart in the obvious way. My dollar figures suggest that land use, when considered broadly, is the biggest environmental issue facing the world now, even bigger than climate change, and thus it deserves to be a prominent section on the site. These sections are not as prominent as I would like, but this is a topic that cannot be adequately tackled in one iteration.
As far as I can tell, the ecosystem valuation literature is the best entry point into the land use issue, however imperfect it may be. But it is a difficult literature. I am taking my time for now in trying to understand how it works.
One thing I have found is that raw acreage is an incomplete measure of the environmental impacts of new development. For a given acreage, linear infrastructure such as roads, railroads, pipelines, etc. tend to be more impactful than two-dimensional structures such as cities. How much more impactful? And what is the efficacy of measures to mitigate the impact of linear infrastructure, such as wildlife corridors for roads, undergrounding power lines, etc.? These are questions I would like to try to answer.
I would like some more information about wildlife mortality. There is a chart on bird deaths, but it is incomplete and only covers birds. In general I have found much less intersection than I expected between the ecological literature and the animal welfare literature, and I would like to make a contribution to closing this gap. But as usual it starts with good data.
Finally, I want more data on conservation. I’m not sure exactly what I am looking for there, but conservation is such a major part of biodiversity protection that the subject needs to be well-treated.
I wasn’t planning on updating my Wildfire section, but this week Ken Caldeira posted some illuminating statistics that I had to incorporate.
O’Neill Cylinders
Robert Zubrin threw down the gauntlet on O’Neill cylinders. He is the President of the Mars Society and favors colonizing Mars in the nearest term. He makes a good case, but here I’ll present my case for O’Neill cylinders as the first destination.
For people not familiar, the concept originated from Gerard K. O’Neill in a 1976 book, and it is idea of accommodating human populations with rotating space habitats.
The main advantage I see of O’Neill cylinders is that they are virtually unlimited in potential extent. Mars offers about the same living area as Earth’s land, and other possible destinations such as the Moon, Titan, or Europa offer less. By decomposing asteroids, O’Neill cylinders offers thousands, maybe millions, times the living area of Earth.
The next big advantage is that O’Neill cylinders can trade with each other easily. The most difficult part of trading with a planet is entering that planet’s gravity well and atmosphere, which requires considerable expenditure of energy. If time is not of the essence, docking in a cylinder’s microgravity is relatively easy.
Unlike planets and moons, the placement of cylinders is flexible. The first location will probably be as Gerard O’Neill envisioned it: Earth’s orbit. O’Neill cylinders can then be moved or built in free orbit around the Sun at any desired distance. With cheaper, mass-produced nuclear fission or if we master fusion, O’Neill cylinders can migrate to transtellar space, offering a much easier path to interstellar travel than the direct routes between star systems that are most commonly envisioned.
We do not know yet how tolerant humans can be of varying gravity levels, and the 1/3 g or 1/6 g that prevails on Mars and the Moon respectively might not be tolerable. The perceived gravity of an O’Neill cylinder can be set to a desired level. Likewise, the climate can be set in a process much easier than terraforming a planet. While there is considerable debate around planetary protection and the ethics of significant modification to Mars’ environment, it will be much easier to justify decomposing lifeless asteroids than the former.
The main disadvantage, as Zubrin highlights, is the material required to make cylinders. That’s a topic I don’t know as much about as I would like, and it could well turn out that the material requirements are a show-stopper in the foreseeable future. But I am doubtful. In the near future, and probably as a prerequisite for major space settlement anywhere, we will develop the capacity for highly automated space construction, which will obviate these material requirements as long as sufficient raw material is available, which it is.
A reality check is in order. Elon Musk’s vision of Mars colonization aside, I don’t think it is likely that humans are going anywhere, at least to stay, for several decades to come. As much as I would like to see major space settlement, the case for doing so is presently weak. We have more than though living space and resources on Earth for the next few generations, and the difficulties of space expansion, regardless of destination, are formidable.

Am i blocked?
Nope! I don’t know who you are, but the only accounts I have blocked are some porn bots and marketing accounts who tried to follow me.
If you’ve sent me an ask recently, I probably haven’t answered it yet. I’m trying a new system where I answer a bunch of asks at once over the weekend, to see if that’s easier for me (I’ll still answer some during the week if they catch me at a good moment, or if they spark an immediate idea).
That said, there are some anonymous asks that I won’t answer, usually because it’s something I don’t want on this blog. You can always send me a private message or a non-anon ask instead, since I can answer those without posting the answers here.
Here’s an incomplete list of the kinds of topics I won’t answer:
1) non-Steven Universe questions. This is a Steven Universe blog, and I intend to keep it that way for the foreseeable future.
2) the personal or private lives of anyone involved with the show’s production. If they haven’t spoken about it in a public interview, I’m not going to speak about it here.
3) spoilers/leaks. I prefer to keep this blog spoiler-free. This includes anything with unaired SU footage, as well as stuff like production selfies from the VA booth, leaks of any kind, etc.
edit: I went through and answered a bunch of asks. I still have more, since there’s a bit of a backlog from while I was away, but this seems like enough for one day. I’ll catch up over the coming weeks.

Checking in with a little update as we continue our rebuild and trudge toward reopening to some degree: we have finally added a tip function to our online store due to public demand, and will be donating 100% of those tips to orgs that support BIPOC causes and BLM activism for the foreseeable future. Thank you in advance for anything you can give and do! The fight for justice is far from over, and the link in our bio provides a huge but still incomplete list of black owned businesses to support in Portland. Second, we have a new pulp natural Brazil in the lineup for online orders, effectively taking the place of the Guatemala but there's still a few bags left of that so snap those up while you can. We have the Uganda and sugarcane process Colombian decaf available too, with some exciting new selections in the works for the near future, so look out for those! Lastly, the aforementioned rebuild goes slowly on, but it's coming together now and we are very excited to begin safe service... soon! Wish we could be more specific, but it's looking good for July. We definitely want to make sure it's appropriate for myriad reasons, so thank you tons for sticking with us, it will be worth the wait! Enjoy these new cafe textures in the meantime. - Luke & Katie #carnelian #coffee #carneliancoffee #coffeenrocks #cafe #fosterpowell #fopo #mtscottarleta #seportland #portland #fosterroad #specialtycoffee #espresso #latte #mocha #pourover #coffeeroasters #coffeeroaster #coffeeroasting #blm (at Foster-Powell) https://www.instagram.com/p/CB7C78Fh3Wl/?igshid=hyb5dut9o6ul

Every Chiefs starting QB who never made the Super Bowl, ranked

There were 29 Chiefs starting quarterbacks after Len Dawson and before Patrick Mahomes.
Finally, a proper comparison between Joe Montana and Tyler Palko.
In January 1970, the Chiefs won the Super Bowl. Then they stepped away from that spotlight for the next 50 years.
Between 1971 and 2019, 49 Super Bowls came and went without Kansas City. Generations of Chiefs fans were raised in a world where the biggest annual sports broadcast was reserved for other teams and never their own. Winning seasons, including a handful of 12- and 13-win campaigns, only served to raise hopes high enough for the eventual fall to really hurt.
Until Patrick Mahomes came along.
The 2018 NFL MVP needed only two years as a starter to end the Chiefs’ Super Bowl drought. He’ll take on the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl 54, 18,284 days after Len Dawson and Jan Stenerud teamed up to topple the Vikings as 12-point underdogs in Super Bowl IV.
Dawson was the alpha when it comes to Kansas City’s Super Bowl quarterbacks. For the foreseeable future, barring disaster, Mahomes will be the omega. What about all the quarterbacks who came in between?
From the 1970 season through 2018, 48 different quarterbacks have thrown a pass for the Chiefs, 31 started at least one game, and 29 didn’t make the Super Bowl. They range from legendary (Joe Montana, Warren Moon) to entirely forgettable (Tony Adams, Brodie Croyle).
These rankings, which are entirely subjective, are based on overall impact, team success, and individual success. Some guys got bumped up because they played in a certain QB-friendly era (hello, Damon Huard). Others slipped because they were surrounded by underwhelming teammates.
With that said, here’s Kansas City’s non-Super Bowl quarterback rankings broken into eight different categories.
An absolute legend for all the wrong reasons
29. Doug Hudson, 1987 (0-1 as a starter)
Between ‘87 and 2007, Hudson was the only Chiefs draftee to make a start at quarterback for Kansas City. What a start it was.
Hudson took the field alongside a cast of replacement players in the heart of the 1987 NFLPA strike. He’d throw one incompletion, was sacked on his second dropback, and fumbled a handoff in the end zone that led to a Broncos safety. He was replaced the very next drive by Matt Stevens and would never play another snap in the NFL. His pro career lasted maybe five minutes. It resulted, officially, in a net loss of 10 yards and -2 points.
Beautiful.
College stars who were absolute garbage
28. Brady Quinn, 2012 (1-7) 27. Brodie Croyle, 2007-10 (0-10)
Croyle went 10-2 in his final season at Alabama. Quinn went 19-6 in his final two years at Notre Dame. Together, they went 1-17 as Chiefs starting quarterbacks.
The part-time starters and stopgaps we quickly forgot
26. Frank Seurer, 1987 (0-2) 25. Tyler Palko, 2011 (1-3) 24. Matt Stevens, 1987 (0-2) 23. Tony Adams, 1975-78 (1-6) 22. Tyler Thigpen, 2008 (1-10) 21. Mark Vlasic, 1991 (0-1) 20. Chase Daniel, 2013-14 (1-1) 19. Steve Pelluer, 1989 (1-1-1)
Seurer finished his NFL career with two starts and a 36.9 passer rating (going 0-20 with zero interceptions would have got him to 39.6). Palko went 1-3 as a starter despite a 2:7 TD:INT ratio and 3.9 adjusted yards per pass in 2011. The fact he won a game is wild. Stevens’ only NFL opportunity came as a replacement player in 1987. He went 0-2.
Adams threw 22 interceptions and only nine touchdowns in four years as a Chief. Thigpen’s 2008 stats were decent (18 passing TDs, three rushing TDs, and one receiving TD), but the Chiefs just won one of his starts.
Vlasic got the opportunity to start late for a playoff-bound Chiefs team in 1991, then sprained his knee after six passes. Though he didn’t get the start, he returned to the lineup in the Divisional Round and threw four interceptions against the Bills. 40 percent of Daniel’s career starts came in Kansas City. He’s made more than $34 million as a pro and is still in the league — he even proved he can be roughly as good as Mitchell Trubisky by starting for the Bears in 2019.
Pelluer’s 1-1-1 record with Kansas City may have been the high point of his seven-year career. It’s also worth nothing that Pete Beathard threw 64 passes in relief duty for the team in 1973, though never started for the team.
No wait, I’m sorry. What I meant to say was that it’s worth noting that Pete Beathard’s middle name is Falconer, which sounds like the kind of prog rock band you’d airbrush onto the side of a conversion van.
The entrenched starters who were bad
18. Todd Blackledge, 1984-87 (13-11) 17. Mike Livingston, 1969-79 (31-43-1) 16. Steve Fuller, 1979-82 (13-18) 15. Bill Kenney, 1980-88 (34-43)
Blackledge never completed more than 50 percent of his passes in any season in which he started an NFL game. He was drafted seventh overall in 1983 in front of Jim Kelly, Ken O’Brien, and Dan Marino and is the second-highest draft pick QB in franchise history behind only Pete Falconer Beathard.
Livingston led the league with three fourth-quarter comebacks in 1976. It was also the year he set a career high in completion rate ... at 55.9 percent. He gave way to Fuller, who was the Chiefs’ first-round pick in 1979. Fuller rose to the team’s starting role as a rookie, was sacked 120 times in four years, and later went on to win an NFL title while filling in for Jim McMahon as part of the Bears’ 1985 Super Bowl Shuffle crew.
Kenney made it to the Pro Bowl months after the Chiefs drafted Blackledge and then stuck around for five more years, mostly to clean up Blackledge’s mess. He’s the only player in this group to throw for more touchdowns than interceptions in the NFL.
The part-time guys who were much, much better elsewhere
14. Ron Jaworski, 1989 (1-2) 13. Warren Moon, 2000 (0-1)
and then a big gap ...
12. Kyle Orton, 2011 (2-1) 11. Nick Foles, 2016 (1-0)
One of the Chiefs’ proudest traditions from the 1980s until the Mahomes era was their unquenched desire for other teams’ veteran quarterbacks. Jaworski and Moon both had past-their-prime stints as Kansas City backups. Jaworski was particularly awful (36 completed passes, five INTs in six games) and probably belongs back in the high 20s. Moon (completion rate with the Chiefs: 43 percent) wasn’t much better.
Orton backed up Matt Cassel and played very Orton-ly, going 2-1 as a starter but throwing just one touchdown pass in that span. Foles won each of the three games in which he appeared and showed off the form that would make him a Super Bowl MVP one season later. Both these guys were fine!
The starters who were better than they should have been
10. Damon Huard, 2006-08 (10-11) 9. Matt Cassel, 2009-12 (19-28)
Do these guys belong above Moon, Jaworski, Orton, and Foles? I struggled with that decision. Cassel and Huard were both starters on Chiefs teams that eventually made it to the playoffs (even if Huard didn’t take a single postseason snap for Kansas City), so that lands them in the top 10 with the least emphatic endorsement I can make.
Don’t let that convince you that either of these men were anything more than lighthouses casting the Chiefs’ 50-year Super Bowl drought out to the fog so the rest of the NFL could see. Huard outplayed Trent Green in 2006 to briefly give hope that Kansas City had stumbled upon a budding QB in the league’s free agent bargain bin. He fell apart in 2007 (necessitating the Croyle era) and made just three starts in 2008.
Cassel was brought in to fix that problem after leading the Patriots to an 11-5 season in Tom Brady’s stead. He made it to a Pro Bowl in 2010 by throwing for 3,116 yards and 27 touchdowns — the latter of which is still a top-five single-season Chiefs mark, because this list is transparently an essay about failure. He never approached those numbers again and was released in 2013 after four seasons and $46 million in earnings.
The full-time guys who were much, much better elsewhere
t-7. Rich Gannon, 1996-98 (11-8) t-7, Dave Krieg, 1992-93 (13-8)
Gannon and Krieg were basically the same player; two veteran quarterbacks in their early 30s who were perfectly cromulent with the Chiefs but way better playing for West Coast teams (Krieg was a three-time Pro Bowler for the Seahawks before becoming a Chief. Gannon won an MVP award with the Raiders several years after leaving KC). You’d be forgiven for mistaking one for the other. Their passing stats suggest “Rich Gannon” was just Dave Krieg with shoe lifts and a crew cut.
Truly this was the 90s Pepsi vs. Coke debate for mediocre Missouri-based quarterbacks.
The former 49ers, Part I
6. Steve Bono, 1994-96 (21-10) 5. Steve DeBerg, 1988-91 (31-20-1) 4. Elvis Grbac, 1997-2000 (26-21)
The only team to love San Francisco quarterbacks more than the 49ers is the Chiefs. Five different passers made the move east, and each turned out pretty well in a different shade of red in Kansas City.
Bono was a 49ers quarterback from 1989 to 1993. He emerged as a Pro Bowler after leading his team to a 13-3 record in 1995, even though his 6.0 yards per pass ranked 28th among 30 qualified quarterbacks that fall. He completed only 11 of his 25 passes and threw three interceptions in a 10-7 Divisional Round playoff loss to an underdog Indianapolis team, and he was replaced late in the game by Gannon.
On the plus side, he was responsible for the weirdest, most glorious touchdown run of the 1990s (and possibly ever?).
DeBerg, a 49ers quarterback from 1978 to 1980, had never won more than five games in 10 seasons as a sometimes-starting quarterback in the NFL. Then he arrived in Kansas City and pushed the Chiefs to three winning seasons (and two playoff appearances) in four years. He led the league in both interception rate (0.9 percent) and adjusted net yards per pass (7.6 — better than Russell Wilson’s 2019 number!) in 1990.
He was the only Chiefs QB to win a playoff game between 1971 and 1993. Kansas City scored 10 points that afternoon against Todd Marinovich’s Raiders. DeBerg passed for 89 yards.
Grbac played for San Francisco from 1994 to 1996. He signed with Kansas City in 1997 and had one decent year and one awful one before breaking out in 1999 and 2000 (7,558 passing yards, 50 touchdowns those two seasons). That led to one Pro Bowl nod and, in true Chiefs fashion, zero playoff wins.
I hate to bring this up now, but Trent Green
3. Trent Green, 2001-06 (48-40)
Breaking up an otherwise unheard-of run of San Francisco retreads is Green. He was originally supposed to be the face of the Rams’ turnaround, but was displaced thanks to a preseason injury and Kurt Warner’s emergence. He eventually led Missouri’s other NFL team to a period of relative prosperity in the early 2000s.
Green was low-key kinda great under Dick Vermeil — the same coach who’d groomed him for St. Louis’ starting job two years before. Flanked by the All-Pro combo of Priest Holmes and Tony Gonzalez, he threw for more than 240 yards per game in Kansas City. Like Bono, he led the team to a 13-3 record in 2003. And, just like Bono, he was bounced out of the playoffs by the Colts without winning a single game.
Green claims five of the top 10 passing seasons in Chiefs history by total yardage, which is wild since he only spent 5.5 seasons as their starting QB. While that’s going to change thanks to Mahomes, Green deserves credit for throwing an often ground-based team into the pass-heavy NFL of his time.
The former 49ers, Part II
2 Joe Montana, 1993-94 (17-8) 1. Alex Smith, 2013-17 (50-26)
It turns out these two were pretty evenly matched at the top of the Chiefs’ “pretty good!” quarterback hierarchy. You could make the case for either guy as the top non-Dawson, non-Mahomes passer of Kansas City’s past 50+ years. Smith had better numbers, played longer, and missed fewer games to injury. Montana was Joe Montana. He unsurprisingly had more postseason success.
Let’s start with the very arguable No. 2 spot on this list. With Steve Young entrenched as the Niners’ starting QB, Montana followed his 49ers quarterback coach Paul Hackett, who was named the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator, to Kansas City in 1993. While the four-time Super Bowl champion was diminished in his age 37 and 38 seasons — the last two of his career — he was still an efficient presence behind center who led his team to playoff berths in both his years with the team.
His two (TWO) playoff wins were the most by any Kansas City starting quarterback between 1971 and 2018. 47 years. Good lord.
Smith went 51-30 in his five seasons as the Chiefs’ starter. His 94.9 passer rating in Kansas City is second-best on this list, behind only Foles (who only made one start with the franchise). Smith’s teams never recorded a losing season with him at the helm and earned four playoff appearances. Though he only won one of those games, he was statistically better in the postseason (a 96.0 rating) than in the regular season.
Kansas City traded two second-round picks to San Francisco to rescue the supplanted former No. 1 overall pick from backup duty for the 49ers. He rewarded that faith with the most successful five-year run of any Chiefs quarterback since the 1960s. He even brought back a third-round pick and cornerback Kendall Fuller when the club handed the reins to Mahomes and traded Smith to Washington.
That’s good enough to make him No. 1 on this list — even if it wasn’t enough to even get Kansas City to an AFC title game.
