Sheo/The Nailsmith:

It's really nice because you unlock it after the nailsmith asks you to kill him with the pure nail and you refuse and walk away. He then says he was wandering hallownest without purpose until he found sheo who helped him discover that there was more to life than just one calling. These two are probably the only characters in the game to have a genuinely happy ending

The nailsmith loses his purpose in life after finishing his ultimate masterpiece, his lifelong goal, the pure nail. He requests the protagonist to try the nail on him, but If you refuse, he will find sheo who helps him to find new meaning in life and realise that there is more to life by teaching him different crafts. They can then be seen sculping figurines together, and sheo is also painting the nailsmith.They share a common love for art and crafts and inspire each other. Sheo's story is that he was a nailmaster, but got tired of it, and put down his nail to pick up a paintbrush. I think it's beautiful that he could help the nailsmith realise what he himself did. They both also used to live in solitude without even realising how lonely they were, and I think it's cute tuhat they can do art together now :]

They are two bugs retired from their career and making better lives for themselves and they’re gay about it. Nailsmith believes at first that he has nothing left after creating the perfect nail and asks the knight to strike him down, and if you don’t, he meets Sheo, a retired nailmaster finding a new calling in painting and sculpting. They find a shared love in creating things and Nailsmith finds a new calling in art as well. The achievement you get for uniting them is called “Happy Couple”

Sheo realized he could just leave that life when he lost his passion for fighting, and he found himself a new purpose in life: art. However, he always seemed very lonely, completely isolated by all other bugs in his hidden house in the middle of a thorn jungle. When The Nailsmith achieved his goal and forged the perfect nail, he lost his purpose in life and his will to live. He asks the player to kill him. However, if the player refuses, he can later be found in Sheo's house, modelling for Sheo or sculpting figurines with him. He thanks the player for not fulfilling his request, because he has found a new calling in life here, making art together with Sheo. They both express how happy they are to no longer be alone. This also gives you the "Happy Couple" achievement, confirming that they are a couple.

THEY'RE CANON!!! They're fucking canon!!! You can talk to them at one point after doing a Bunch of Stuff to get them to meet each other and you get an achievement called "Happy Couple"!!! Gotta love old man yuri

Personally, I love that Whisper is a little messy.

I love that she is—for a Sonic character, at least—complicated. Overall, she's a good person. She wants to help and protect others. She's compassionate, and brave. She accepts others for who they are even when it might be inconvenient. (Ian Flynn clarified on a Bumblekast that when Whisper replied "I don't" to Lanolin when Lanolin asked her how she handled Tangle in the Urban Warfare arc, what Whisper meant was that Tangle is her own person and Whisper doesn't try to control her one way or the other. It wasn't her being angry.) She's usually patient and owns up when she makes mistakes. She's smart and capable, but still humble. She's determined and diligent and loyal.

But she is also traumatized, and while some of that trauma comes through in Socially Acceptable™️ ways of being sad and soft-spoken, it also comes through in less Socially Acceptable™️ ways. She self-isolates to the point where it damages her inter-personal relationships, sometimes on purpose. She is willing to commit murder against those who have caused great harm and has attempted to kill both Mimic and Eggman in canon twice each. She can be terse and is hypervigilant and sometimes violent as a result of her hypervigilance, warranted or not. (Because although we know she's right about Duo being Mimic, that doesn't give her a pass to put hands on Lanolin the way she does.) She regularly fails to communicate her feelings until cornered or she hits a breaking point. She spent the vast majority of her time in the story steadfastly refusing to heal from her grief over the deaths of her friends by saving the recording of the moment they died so she could watch it again and again.

None of this to say Whisper is a bad person. She's not. She's a severely traumatized 16 year old girl. She deserves to be given grace. But she is complicated. She's messy. Saving the body cam footage of when your friends were murdered so you can watch it over and over and keep that grief and need for vengeance festering in your heart is not a healthy coping mechanism. Self-isolating to the point where you won't even say goodbye (as she was going to do when she left the Restoration prior to Trial By Fire before Tangle happened to catch her in the act) isn't great behavior, either. And while the topic of whether a villain deserves to die for their actions is a moral quandry comics fans have wasted decades arguing about, the fact remains that the willingness to do so is rare by Sonic hero standards. In fact, it's usually only the antiheroes (such as Shadow) who are willing to do it. But Whisper shot Eggman through the heart in Urban Warfare; he would be dead right now if she hadn't been stuck halfway in cyberspace.

Yes, Whisper is soft with her wisps and her girlfriend and her friends. She tells jokes about toasters. She gets very excited to chill at the beach, and she is willing to put herself on the line time and again to protect strangers. But she is also willing to do the things she feels must be done, no matter how her friends might not approve, and sometimes her coping behaviors (or lack thereof) are awful. This wolf contains multitudes.

And I love her for it.

a lot of sonic fans these days just kind of take the existence of '06 for granted due to growing up with it, and as such don't really think twice about a lot of it. a lot more are just sick of it being brought up because it's a dead horse. but like. it's really, really funny when you look at all the shit with sonic and elise and realize that they just wanted to make ff10. it was really just them wanting to do their own tidus and yuna, complete with expensive prerendered cutscenes to show off how realistic they could make their lead heroine look. people said as much at the time, but i think younger fans just kind of accept '06 as part of the Series Canon for better or worse and don't think twice about why the game is Like That

certain subsets of sonic fan treat '06 as the last gasp of sincerity for '00s sonic before they started to walk it back, and i see that to some extent, but to me so much of the game screams "we wanted to be making anything other than sonic." there's also the quotes from yuji naka saying they were reinventing the series with '06 because they wanted to chase the blockbuster mainstream success of superhero movies like spider-man 2 and batman begins. it's wild. it's no wonder he left sega in the middle of development because he was tired of working sonic

Been thinking about Snowpoint...

What if... What if Starline considers Shadow to be too much of a problem? Like he's making a lot of progress into bringing Sonic back. What would Starline do about Shadow then if he realized how big of a problem this was?

starline in canon is a bit baffling because he kinda. ignores the rules? idk. what i mean by that is like... it takes him hundreds of tries to hypnotize surge and kit, but it only takes him 1 try to hypnotize rouge. and he also bests shadow by smacking him over the head with a log, despite shadow being the unbeatable ultimate life form.

that's what makes him so tricky to write. he's simultaneously extremely powerful, while also being able to... be beaten to death by eggman. just eggman. not even one of his robots.

for snowpoint i've tried to balance these differences, with sonic being extremely difficult for him to wrangle, while the rest of the town was relatively easy. given his track record, shadow should also be easy to deal with... right? i mean, he beat him once before.

but i don't know if i'm really happy with that?

like, sure, i COULD say that starline jumps shadow while he's in snowpoint, and he captures him, and it's as easy as hitting him over the head with a big log. but that's not fun. i don't like that.

i'd be much more inclined to have starline try to turn the townspeople on shadow by altering the radio broadcast, so they start to attack him during the endgame, and he has the additional obstacle of All Of Them Chasing Him Zombie-Style in addition to having to track down the radio transmitters, and fighting sun in her beast form.

at its core, the drama would come from... the people in snowpoint being civilians. like. jack is one of the VERY FEW "powered" mobians who live there. the majority of them will die if shadow fights back. instantly. like tissue paper.

and does he really want that? shadow wants to save these people, not slaughter them. they don't want to fight him, anyway--they're being forced to. is it fair to punish them for that?

plus, jack and sonic getting slowed down by this new itch that they have to fight off is pretty compelling. thinking back on how they teamed up against shadow wayyyy back in the beginning just for fun, to teach him a lesson about how cool they both are or whatever, and they successfully overpowered him TOGETHER, only now, if they did that again, it wouldn't end with shadow's head shoved playfully into the snow. it'd end with him dead.

Sonic Prime Extended Universe HCs - New Yoke

so we know that the Shatterverses aren’t “real,” full universes, just distorted reflections of the Prime that aren’t fully-formed, hence why there’s only like 6 people and two locations. However fucking around is fun fun fun so I’m just gonna do a post for each universe dissecting where the other Sonic Universe characters would be and what they’d be up to. Team Chaotix are lowkey rebels. They pretend to be model citizens while aiding Rebel and Renegade’s forces from the sidelines. Well, when I say “they,” I mean all of them but Charmy. He is noooot the subtle type so they just hide him inside. This keeps him alive but his zoomies are insane. House has been on fire at least twice.

You guys know Fiona’s backstory in Archie where she was besties with Mighty and Ray and they tried to revolt and it didn’t end well? Yeah I feel like that literally happens 1-1 here; Mighty and Ray think Fiona is dead, she’s digging her way out of isolation. The boys are on the run and NOT having a good time.

The other 1-1 is Whisper’s backstory. oops

Tangle and Jewel are in the Resistance; Tangle’s a fighter obvsly, Jewel works espionage/organization/keeping Tangle from dying.

SatAM Freedom Fighters are literally just doing the same shit. However without Sonic they’re missing their most crucial team member (the Distraction™) so they have to be way more sneaky and careful. then again if there IS a New Yoke!Sonic he could very well be here so maybe they’re all just vibin

StC Freedom Fighters are here too; their resistance is way smaller and they can’t do a lot but they are doing their BEST okay?? Porker and Tekno are making some kickass robots and Shortfuse is a huge win for them. Johnny was their main fighter and uh. well. right before the Sonic Incident™ he kinda got blasted just like in canon. Sorry buddy

Vanilla and Cream are hiding the chao in their basement. Literally, they dug out a basement to function as a makeshift chao garden so that the little guys wouldn’t get killed by the mass roboticization. It’s not going too well because chao need clean water to survive and there’s only so much they can get. They’re not involved with the rebellion though; they’re doing all they can to keep themselves and their chao alive, and without meeting Amy or Sonic they’ve never made contact with the main cast. Perhaps, similar to Advance 2, they make contact when Vanilla gets captured for roboticization and Cream teams up with the rebels to rescue her?

If we assume Robotnik has control of the Continents too, I like to think the Sonic X humans are running the rebellions over there. Chris has built Helen a rocket-powered wheelchair with guns on it and she is a little bit too happy about it

Elise is under a ton of pressure to keep her kingdom alive with the new dictatorship; they’re constantly checking in on her and roboticizing “criminals” in her kingdom and she hates it but if she objects they all die. Not having a good time!!

If Blaze is in this dimension she’s got a bit more freedom than Elise what with her superpowers; I feel like she probably has isolated her kingdom from the rest of the world while desperately trying to defeat oncoming invaders all by herself with her fire powers (+ with Silver maybe?). One day she goes too far and passes out, only to be saved by little Marine who encourages her to keep fighting.

Sticks is THRIVING. Girl expected a robo-pocalypse for years and it finally came and now she’s rescued a few stragglers and they have a mini-civilization in her bunker in the woods. She often leads attacks on the robots just to fuck with the Council and also cause she thinks it’s fun.

Babylon Rogues aren’t on the Council’s side but they’re also not really helping the rebellion. They just run around stealing shit like they normally do

Surge and Kit happen after the Sonic Incident™; Starline tries to recreate Sonic’s power and it goes. about as well as you’d expect.

the reason we don’t see Orbot and Cubot here imo is that they’re running factories in farther areas. Not well but they’re doing an adequate enough job they haven’t been scrapped yet

Snively is also running a factory somewhere, but his obsequious nature might get him roboticized just out of annoyance one day.

Breezie is considered their most dangerous robot. She’s a shapeshifter and can disguise herself as a normal mobian in order to get information on the Resistance; they’re constantly terrified that anybody could be Her.

Robotnik JR is here too, also a shifter; he’s made to be a robotic duplicate of the Chaos Council for certain public appearances in case of assassination attempts.

Decoe and Bocoe I don’t see as being here, but I dO see Bokkun as being WAY scarier than funny here. He is a detonation-bot and he’s damn good at his job and he’s a scary lil gremlin guy

Hope lost most of her family and is living under the Chaos Council’s ““care””. She absolutely hates them and is trying to aid the Resistance, but she’s under constant observation and thus can make no actual contact with them. Every now and again she’s been able to delete a file or turn off a camera. There’s no telling how many of them she’s saved with these small acts. They don’t know she exists.

Belle and Sage are not here... yet.

What do you think of Silver the Hedgehog?

He's one of those characters like Shadow where I appreciate him more for how others interpret his character, because I don't want the official version of the character hanging around anymore.

I know people like him, and how they think of him is fun, but he (and Blaze the Cat) are like the epitome of characters that shouldn't still be appearing in stories and only get dragged back out because they're fan favorites.

Except, you know, most of the cast are fan favorites. This was the same problem that lead to games like Sonic Heroes and the prevailing term of "Sonic's Shitty Friends."

Like, okay, sure, we brought Shadow back from the dead. That genie's already out of the bottle, we can't put him back in again. Knuckles is still kicking around because we eventually claimed to have solve his need to guard Angel Island or whatever. Also one very non-canonical anime OVA gave him the line "I'm Sonic's best friend" so I guess that's just true now?

But Silver the Hedgehog has been double erased from the timeline. Figuring out how to defeat Iblis in the present should have nullified the existence of his future, and when Sonic and Elise blew out the flame in the distant past, that would have also nullified the existence of his future.

Similarly, Blaze the Cat hopped from Silver's doomed future into a new alternate future where she became a Princess somehow, and it was supposed to be this very tragic psuedo-death for their relationship. Letting Silver and Blaze freely hop back and forth around the timeline, both to chill with Sonic and chill with each other, actually really sucks in terms of that being an important moment of character growth for them.

What people are doing with him now makes me really enjoy him being this kind of dumb, naive, hopeful guy, but he really does not need to be around outside of "but the fans want him here." And that's not good enough for me, because Sonic fans seem to want just about any bone you throw them, at all times, regardless of the context.

You could bring Heavy and Bomb back and probably still get a standing ovation, which is to say nothing about how perception of Big the Cat completely 180'd over the last 25 years.

We don't actually need Silver. I'm sorry.

I'll keep the canon Unbreakable Bond brothers and your Dreamtale au brothers from today's concept separate here by referring to them as Dream and Night.

So now then, you said only Dream (Sonic) can defeat Nightmare. But their backstory is tragic. Dream lost his brother when they were mere children and was petrified for five centuries. But clearly his brother isn't dead dead, more like changed or came back wrong or corrupted (something along those lines.)

So what if, both these concepts occur in the same story? Aka Sonic & Tails, and Dream & Nightmare are from different dimensions. Nightmare (aka Tails' counterpart if sorts) somehow found a bridge to this world and is now haunting Sonic. And Dream (Sonic's counterpart) is the only one who could defeat him

And can you how tragic and painful that would be for all of them? Sonic has to defeat Tails so another pair of brothers don't lose each other like they did. What if Nightmare is haunting Sonic specifically because deep down somewhere, he just wants 'to play' with his brother. Or hurt Dream. And Sonic looks so much like Dream... He specifically targets him because that hedgehog looks like - is, in a way - his brother. And Dream when he gets there to stop Nightmare, sees Tails, alive, happy, well, cared for. Untainted by the darkness.. would he be protective? Would he be sad? How would seeing Tails effect him? What kind of pain would it bring? Will it make fighting Nightmare even harder?

So many thoughts...

Ok ok oh boy, so I originally had these ideas completely separate, but this Oh Marie I'm kissing your brain.

Dreamtale is kinda vital and integral part of the multiverse in its og story, I'm not exactly sure how much of that I want in this AU, but that would definitely have an impact on how Dream!Sonic would react to seeing Tails again. He's been around the multiverse a lot he's gotta be a bit desensitized to it, he'd be used to hunting Nightmare!Tails down and stopping him from causing unnecessary harm.

Except this time, this particular instance is different somehow. It feels the most familiar, the most innocent and painful.

Something akin to a deja vu with how warm the shade of Tails' coat is, the light in his eyes exactly the same he remembers in his brother before everything went wrong, the innocent smile and closeness he has to the Sonic of this universe. With the hedgehog himself being the most uncanny of mirrors he's seen yet.

Seeing the almost exact face of his little bro again after so long of it only being a fuzzy and distant memory would definitely hurt and make him want to protect Tails at all costs and from everything and everyone. It always does. But then he turns around with an arrow ready to shoot, and sees the same face agan. Dark and corrupted, a reminder of his past failure to save his own little bro. It tears him inside but he knows what the right thing to do at the end of the day is. It always ends the same way.

I figure your question why Prime has to be canon in a rhetorical one, but I see it as having two intertwined sides:

The people who clamour hardest that spin-offs like Prime and IDW are canon know very well that the games are the true, unshakeable canon that everything else is based off of, and that Sonic will first and foremost remain a game franchise;

We've seen with Archie that, once it was dead, it was dead-dead. The only people with power over the Sonic franchise who care still about it are those who worked on it, like Flynn and Evan. From SoJ, the "lmao we don't care at all" could not be greater. Same with Boom, except no-one in power cares about that anymore, and it is never ever brought up in anything ever again. Sticks got nuked from Tokyo 2020 after appearing in Rio 2016, and her mention in Frontiers is English-only (aka probably at the hands of Flynn).

Thus, once Prime and IDW die, they will most likely die-die as well. Forgotten, unmentioned, with zero interest from those (ultimately SoJ, I figure) who could bring them back, and maybe with some characters appearing in a mobile game and some more toys made of it until it fizzles out and they never show up anymore. I don't get the feeling SoJ is particularly interested by either. Thus, the people who like these spin-offs surely must know that there will be a day that the spin-offs in question are dead in the water.

But if it is canon, if it is a true part of the games, then they can never be forgotten. Then they will always exist, because Sonic as an active franchise will only cease to exist once there are no more games being made!!! (Of course, the franchise will remain, but no new content will be made for it anymore.) That is why I figure it's so important for the true hardcore "but it's CANON😤😤" fans that their spin-off is canon: because if they are not canon, they'll eventually disappear with zero new content for them, while the actual canon part of the franchise will continue. I can understand why that is saddening, but in the same vein, it's also a bit of a delusion considering the many canon-breaking differences between the actual games and the spin-offs that have been extensively doven into already. Not to mention the fact SoJ just might not care for either.

I understand what you said, and from that point of view, it makes sense.

But... that's simply not how it works? Again, Sonic X is arguably the most "canon" adaptation so far: SEGA was more directly involved, and it straight up adapted some of the games of the time. And yet, it's not relevant anymore. Flynn had to confirm, as if there was any need, that he can't bring back anything from that anime, because they don't own the rights.

Canon is not a badge of honor you can earn! It doesn't elevate a work above others. It simply is a collection of "official" material that a newcomer might need to catch up on to understand a franchise. Not even all games are canon - Knuckles' Chaotix, for example.

IDW was originally pitched as being an alternative timeline of sort, splitting from Forces, and it still is since Frontiers came out more than a year ago and IDW doesn't seem to have any intention of including its events. It's not canon. Whatever your opinion on the comic is, it's its own thing. Tangle being namedropped in Frontiers, in an easily missable optional line, is about as canon as the SatAM characters appearing in the bonus stages of Spinball.

Archie might be completely dead, but it's still kept alive in the hearts of many fans. That's the most a spinoff can get. That's just how it works.

Propaganda for Beastman/Lifeweaver:

Okay, this crossover ship is brand spanking new because Lifeweaver's character was only released 6 days ago, but- Okay, so, Lifeweaver used to attend the Academy owned by the Vishkra Corporation until he went backpacking around the world and saw all the damage to the planet that was being done in the name of corporate greed and global control. Lifeweaver left Vishkra and joined Overwatch to "heal the world". He is a support character with healing abilities and a floral/plant-based aesthetic. Beastman used to be Skeletor's most loyal minion until Skeletor died in the first episode of Revelation. Beastman then made it his life's mission to protect Evil-Lyn whom had been Skeletor's lover and second-in-command. He is loyal to Lyn to a fault and at the end of Revelation, Beastman allows Lyn to turn him into a more animal-like beast, then he's almost immediately flung off a cliff and assumed dead. Beastman was done dirty by the narrative and is in need of physical and spiritual healing. Lifeweaver is a healer who wants to personally save everything. Lifeweaver could show Beastman that life is worth living without having to submit his service to a master, he could live for himself according to his own will. Beastman can teach Lifeweaver the follies of devoting too much of yourself to a singular purpose or ideal and that he needs to set aside time for himself and his own needs. They complete each other. Also, Lifeweaver/Beastman would be plant-animal solidarity.

Animal/plant solidarity, beauty and the beast aesthetic, they just complete each other, okay???

mutual support's the name of the game, my friend! Beastman is fiercely loyal even to the point of his own destruction. In MotU:R he's so loyal to Evil-Lyn that he allows her to turn him into a were-creature to fight for her, then he died. But at every step and beat of their relationship, Beastman was always supportive of Lyn, both physically in battle and also emotionally when they were both putting up with Skeletor's abuse. He even calls Lyn out when she continues the cycle of abuse after Skeletor is deposed. He is an emotionally strong man who's not afraid to show his vulnerable side. Lifeweaver is a new character from Overwatch 2 and we don't technically know a lot about him just yet. The canon facts we do know are that he used to attend the Vishkar Academy, but dropped out. He then went backpacking around the world and witnessed first hand how the corporate greed of the Vishkar corporation was killing the planet. He used his Academy training to develop the bio-light technique he uses to be a healer and support fighting in battle. But he's also a Thai Buddhist who believes in healing over destruction and believes that anyone can change, and learn, and grown if given the opportunity. Beastman and Lifeweaver are soulmates, places in different franchises because they would be too powerful together.

When Beastman makes his first appearance in the series, he charges on the scene to protect Evil-Lyn (whom is a mage with long white hair). Over the course of the series it becomes apparent that his loyalty to Lyn is more than just simple friendship, but she's obviously not into him so Beastman is content to stay by her side as her friend and protector. When Evil-Lyn goes back to Skeletor, Beastman follows her. When Skeletor resume manipulating and abusing Lyn, Beastman is there to remind her of her value as a person and tell her that she's deserves better than Skeletor. When Evil-Lyn defeats Skeletor and takes over Caste Grayskull from him, Beastman is the voice of reason that calls Lyn out on continuing Skeletor's cycle of abuse. Beastman truly loved Lyn and wanted her to be happy, healthy, alive, and the best version of herself even if she wasn't with him. But, Evil-Lyn turned him into some kinda even more beastly beast-monster and sends him out to die in battle for her. Now, enter Lifeweaver from Overwatch 2. Lifeweaver is a scientist who created a kind of living light technique to heal his comrades in battle. To Beastman, this technology would appear like magic. Lifeweaver would appear like a mage, and he has long white hair. Lifeweaver would remind Beastman of all the good things about Lyn, but Lifeweaver doesn't have any of her flaws or failings (Lifeweaver's got his own flaws, but this post ain't about that). AND Lifeweaver has never perpetuated the cycle of abuse and, in fact, one of his voice lines is "grow into who you truly are". Lifeweaver would encourage Beastman to grow in ways he never could have on Eternia with Lyn and Skeletor. Lifeweaver could help Beastman to become the best version of himself. Beastman in turn could keep Lifeweaver grounded and not let him become so carried away by his ideals that he forgets where he is in the present. They compete each other.

We don't know the exact age Tails was when he first joined Sonic but he was absolutely baby and little considering if you idle long enough he gets sleepy and does a little yawn. Anyways he's created napalm before. He is horrifyingly smart like don't fuck with this kid. In the games he goes through character development, moving past being in Sonic's shadow and growing into his own. Instead of relying on Sonic the save him he goes out of his way to save the city and when Sonic is believed to be dead, he goes head to head with Eggman at 8 years old. After the Adventure era, his characterization takes a nosedive but it's directly mentioned in the latest game that he himself feels like he's been inconsistent. He's still growing up and he is still learning. Sonic tells him all this and you can tell Sonic and Tails love each other so much okay I'll stop because I will burst into tears thinking abt the brothers."

I swear IDW could get immediately cancelled and go the way of Prime in terms of long-term relevancy, but these yahoos would still swear up n' down that it's still canon, or rather "important." Nobody with a single braincell, coming into the fandom, is gonna hunt down and read a potentially-dead comic, in order to understand all of Sonic's lore. Because that becomes Required Reading, which in other words 'extra homework.' And nobody likes homework for what is ultimately supposed to be easy and or enjoyable to consume. I shouldn't have to watch Prime or read IDW just to 'catch up' with a franchise I like. They're ultimately junk food at best from the Actual Canon, i.e. the video games. Stop telling me junk food is just as good as the fruits & vegetables that maybe I prefer to eat, comic stans.

People throw around Archie Sonic trivia nuggets as if they're canon, and Archie Sonic opened every single issue with a narration box saying "this shit isn't canon", so that's a given.

The reality is that IDW Sonic is going to end when IDW as a company goes out of business, which is definitely going to happen that company is careening towards bankruptcy within the next five years guaranteed. And when that happens, the IDW Sonic comics are going to be out of print and off the market. The ONLY way to purchase them is going to be from second hand resellers for scalpers prices. It is going to be IMPOSSIBLE to legally read the IDW Sonic comics before the decade is out. Ya really think anybody financially involved with the Sonic brand is still going to be insisting the comics are canon then? Anybody who thinks that SEGA will start self publishing the IDW Sonic comics and continue that continuity, or that another comic company can pick up the baton from IDW, is fucking delusional.

And that's the thing about the "it's canon now" argument that's self defeating. Crossing your arms and insisting that it's canon NOW is tacitly admitting that it was not canon before. And if it wasn't canon before but it is canon now, then that means they changed their mind. And if they changed their mind once, they can change it again. There's no guarantee that it will REMAIN canon, and I can pretty much guarantee that it definitely won't. This 1984 ass mentality that we need to retroactively consider it to have always been canon because they're saying it is now, as if it always has been, is just psychotic. And the complete lack of self awareness to comprehend that that may change in the future is just stupidity. To think that how things are in the here and now is how they always have been and always will be, that the singular moment of the Now is all encompassing of all time past and future and we cannot acknowledge that things used to be or may eventually become different, is becoming a depressingly common mentality.

Not even to mention Sonic Prime which was DOA and Netflix is probably going to blam it from their servers and make it unavailable to ever be viewed legally online ever again in a few years lol. Now THAT shit was funny. Remember how people were huffing copium so deep and so hard that they were theory crafting that the show would end by cosmically resetting the universe to a state that resembles the video games and that would explain how the show is canon because it'd turn out to have been a prequel all along? What is the Canon Route in Shadow the Hedgehog (2005)?

This document talks about the following entries in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise:

Introduction

Well thank god I didn’t make any promises with the pace this blog has been going at.

Anyways, welcome to the long overdue return of the lore blog! Let’s not beat around the bush and get right into today’s topic.

What is the canon route in Shadow the Hedgehog (2005)?

For simplicity’s sake, most linked cutscenes will be in English, but if a point requires access to the Japanese version (the version that would’ve been written first, given Takashi Izuka (the game’s writer) is Japanese), then that will be used instead.

Stage 1: Westopolis

This is pretty simple, there straight up cannot be any other choice as the beginning of our pathway, so the only remaining question is which mission does Shadow clear? Well, we can’t say for certain, but the next best guess would be…

Stage 2: Glyphic Canyon

And already we’ve reached a point of uncertainty. We cannot say with complete confidence which of these locals Shadow visited. We cannot even say that he definitely did not visit Lethal Highway, as we just do not have enough evidence for it.

But, we do have more evidence for the other two stages. For Glyphic Canyon, Shadow references visiting it before in Sky Troops, expressing surprise that it could fly, but only if you actually take Shadow to Sky Troops in your route.

Conversely, in Digital Circuit it’s well established that - regardless of what route you take - the Black Arms do assault and ultimately take down the information network, effectively shutting down the internet for GUN and the United Federation for the duration of the war, though with no mention that Shadow is involved.

Given the two possibilities, I’ve deemed Glyphic Canyon to have stronger evidence, as Shadow himself displays recollection, combined with information I’m going to gleam in Stage 4 - coupled with the fact that the takedown of the internet happens even if Shadow refuses to do it himself, as shown in the Hero Mission of Digital Circuit.

Stage 3: Cryptic Castle

Here we not only know which stage Shadow visited for sure, but even which mission he took.

When visiting Cryptic Castle during the Expert Mode run (which implicitly takes place after the main campaign of the story), Cream outright thanks Shadow for rescuing her, something which only takes place here.

Stage 4: ???

Uh.

Well, it’s not like the case in Stage 2, where there was a lack of information to really determine which stage Shadow went to.

Rather, Shadow absolutely, definitely visits at least two of these locations.

The Doom comes about from a sequence of memories present in the Last Story, where among one of them (in Japanese only), a direct re-use of one of Black Doom’s lines during The Doom is used, clearly indicating that Shadow remembers this exact event.

Conversely, we know Shadow also visited Mad Matrix, as Shadow’s impressive hacking skills are imitated by Charmy during the Last Story.

While Shadow would visit Sky Troops after rescuing Cream, if we take the mission he cleared there as canonical evidence.

Death Ruins is one of two points where Black Doom mentions the ritual of prosperity prior to the Last Story’s reveal of what it is (albeit not by name), and the other reference likely can’t be used due to associated information present there.

So, technically, the canon story can’t be any individual route… Buuut, Stage 4 also happens to be the only point where Shadow isn’t collecting a Chaos Emerald. So if multiple stages are already canon, it could be surmised that there could still be a canonical emerald route, and Stage 4 is just a collection of the roadblocks and dead ends along the way on Shadow’s journey.

Stage 5: Iron Jungle/Space Gadget

God damn it.

Iron Jungle has to be canon because, while Eggman hints at it during Mad Matrix, this is the only point where he outright says that Shadow is an android, a lie he admits to during the story’s climax (in easily missable dialogue…)

But Space Gadget also has to be canon, because in that same surge of memories Shadow experiences he also remembers himself quoting shock at remembering his death.

So there you have it, no individual route can be canonical in Shadow the Hedgehog, because mutually exclusive events still happen simultaneously.

Oh, and it should go without saying, but the flashback portion of Lost Impact should be canonical regardless of the route taken, given it’s, you know, a flashback.

Stage 6: Cosmic Fall/Black Comet/Final Haunt

Cosmic Fall needs to happen, not only to help Vector find the computer room, but also because Shadow talks with the GUN Commander, where not only his memory sequence shows that he met with the Commander here. The Commander even apologises for his actions during the Last Story.

Yet at the same time, Shadow’s journey needs to end on the Black Comet (either stage), as that’s where the Last Story begins.

What about GUN Fortress, though? The President is there in the Last Story, and we see that happening at the beginning of GUN Fortress, and we’ve established that multiple stages are canon, so it must be canon too, right?

Well, no. For one, it doesn’t matter whether Shadow attempted to kill him, left him alone, or even attempted to save him would have no bearing on where the President would wind up, as he was already being evacuated.

For two, in GUN Fortress Shadow had associated himself with the Black Arms thoroughly and validated the Commander’s hatred, which contradicts their conversation over in Cosmic Fall where the Commander let go of his hatred.

For three, Central City isn’t blasted lol. I know this only factors for one of two paths leading into that stage, but still lol.

Boss: Egg Dealer (Black Comet)

He needs to get the final Chaos Emerald from somewhere, and we’ve already established why it wouldn’t make sense for Diablon (piloted directly or indirectly by the Commander) to fight Shadow, we know that Black Doom’s plan is to get the Chaos Emeralds and will ask Shadow for them in the Last Story, and we know his journey ends on the Black Comet. So it has to be Eggman by process of elimination.

But at the same time, the ending of that boss fight can’t be canon, given it ends with him killing Eggman, and that clearly doesn’t happen. That’s fine, though, as clearly none of the endings are canon since Shadow has no such epiphany at the beginning of the Last Story and seems to have just collected them.

Outroduction

Well the truth about a singular canonical route is that… there isn’t one. So it’s more likely Shadow in fact hopped through most of these areas in his search for the Chaos Emeralds, and only got his hands on them in specific areas during his search.

Given the timeframe, this clearly makes Shadow one busy hog.

So what’s the most conservative route throughout Shadow the Hedgehog (2005)? It goes a little something like this…

That’s not to say that other stages can’t be a part of that routing, just that this is - by all accounts - as conservative as you can get with the knowledge of canonicity, with other stages serving as additional add-ons.

Still though, it would’ve been nice if we could point at an individual route and just say “hey, that’s the one that takes place”. Would’ve made the 326 individual story routes a little more meaningful if we could actually analyse them for the true one. But I guess that’s the point, isn’t it? The routes aren’t meant to showcase Shadow’s actual journey, but instead are gathering up the individual pieces in order to build up towards the conclusion of the Last Story, all the while showing who Shadow could have become along the way.

And who Shadow will end up as by the end of all this.
