"In brief definition, capitalism is the system by which capital uses the nation for its own purposes, fascism is the system by which the nation uses capital for its own purposes, private enterprise is permitted and encouraged so long as it coincides with the national interests, private enterprise is not permitted when it conflicts with national interests, under fascism private enterprise may serve but not exploit, this is secured by the corporative system, which lays down the limits within which industry may operate, and those limits are the welfare of the nation"

positionality vs identity
making this post in response to circulating claims about "transmasc privilege" and a noticeable gap in some of y'alls understanding of oppression.
positionality can be thought of as the way society perceives and treats you, and what privileges you are afforded accordingly.
identity can be thought of as your internal sense of self.
for most people, the two do not line up perfectly. your positionality depends on what people immediately see, not what you tell them. your positionality may also vary day to day based on a number of factors including but not limited to the people you are surrounded by, the space you are in, and the positionalities and identities of those perceiving you.
privilege is based almost entirely on positionality, not identity.
a good example is the diversity within the transgender community. if you take three transgender men at different stages in their transition they will each have a different positionality. one may have the positionality of a gender conforming cisgender man, the second may have the positionality of a transgender man, the third may have the positionality of a gender conforming cisgender woman. the gendered privileges these three people are afforded are vastly different despite all three of them having an identical gender identity.
if you have the positionality of a certain marginalized group, you will be targeted with the same oppression as them whether or not you share an identity with them. the fact that you don't share the identity doesn't suddenly make that oppression go away. you can be oppressed based on a positionality that does not align with your identity.
if you have questions on positionality vs identity i urge you to reply to this post instead of ignoring the gap in your knowledge.

Trans manhood is either third gender-classed or woman-classed under patriarchy. Trans men as a social category do not have a man positionality.
It's pretty tiresome to see discussions about the position of trans manhood/t-masculinity in society implicitly implying that it's positioned as some kind of manhood. It doesn't have that status and most of the time it doesn't even reach the gender status of the "lesser man''. It's outright excluded from the men's class. Trans manhood is seen either as a third gender or as a strange womanhood.

Behind the Myth of Benevolence (2014) by Titus Kaphar
“Titus Kaphar Behind the Myth of Benevolence exposes, complicates and disrupts the notion, narrative and positionality of the so-called ‘benevolent’ founding father, Thomas Jefferson, our third president and author of the Declaration of Independence which articulated ‘all men are created equal with an equal right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness,’ who owned more than 600 human beings.
The ‘curtain’ is simultaneously revealing and concealing Sally Hemings, a Black woman he owned whose six children he fathered, portrayed in a more stark and dark representation than other images of her." (source)

are radfems left-wing or right-wing?
don't really think they are inherently either; there are variants of each. there's a lot of like, "No True Feminist/Leftist" stakes around this question for some people but I don't think that's especially important or interesting.
as a theoretical movement I think it's hard to deny that at at least a lot of the figureheads of the 60s and 70s were more aligned with the left than the right, and a lot of radical feminism (or its palette-swap for the Sophisticated Grad Student, materialist feminism) emerged out of left-wing movements. but also part of the whole point was a positioning against the left, which it claimed (not incorrectly) was insufficiently attentive to women's issues. the treatment of sex (instead of class) as the fundamental site of social and political conflict makes it idiosyncratic.
of course you also have the Daly-Raymond-Jeffreys-Bindel genealogy as well, as a counterexample of a prominent conservative approach to the same set of topics. and that particular tendency has quite clearly won the day within radical feminism. this isn't meant to appeal to an older, better radical feminism, there were always substantive problems with their models, but the diversity of opinion within those spheres has narrowed significantly in a conservative direction.
in spite of that theoretical association though, as a political movement I think its shape was already rather conservative (or perhaps...liberal? *smug emoji*) in a number of ways and that has only intensified in recent years, since many of their political priorities cross-pollinated with right-wing goals even if the motivating values are supposedly different. not to mention that I think radical feminist politics appeal to people for psychologically similar reasons to why other regressive forms of thinking and action appeal to people (e.g. ressentiment, post-hoc justifications for preexisting desires, appeals to emotion, anti-intellectualism)
my spicy take is that it's a form of Third Positionism lol

Do you know any posts or articles that explain more thoroughly why it’s not true that trans women don’t experience misogyny pre-transition? What I’ve read so far has talked about psychological effects and how closeted trans women internalize misogyny experienced by other women but I was wondering if there’s anything about how issues such as gender pay gaps or glass ceilings affect pre-transition trans women. I apologize if this was unclear or I used the wrong words, English is my third language.
I remember seeing a research study showing that when you sort child sexual abuse cases by the victim's gender conformity, rates are highest among feminine children assigned male at birth, but that was so long ago I don't have the link anymore.
Many trans women and girls experience abuse of various kinds pre-transition (sometimes pre-realization) when authority figures or others decide they're fair targets due to noticeable social differences.
Honestly though things like gender pay gaps and glass ceilings don't ever effect all women the same way, they're aggregate statistics.
I don't know if trans women tend to experience those specific forms of misogyny pre transition!! But the suggestion that if they don't, that means they're not impacted at all by misogyny pre transition, is ridiculous.
There are multiple categories of women impacted less than others by the glass ceiling and the gender pay gap, but they obviously still experience misogyny.
Misogyny is multifaceted and aggregate. Women have a wide variety of experiences. The fact that I personally haven't experienced, for example, being fired for being pregnant, or for being an elderly or middle aged woman past youthful looks, doesn't negate my own experience of misogyny, and if a trans woman squeaks by without getting hit with misogynistic pay differences until she publicly transitions, that is not enough to say she doesn't experience misogyny.
Regardless of the pre transition stats, we do have studies showing that post transition, trans women make less than cis women, cis men, or trans men. (Again, I don't have the link or the energy to chase it down today, but someone in the notes may have it)
I'd be curious to see any studies people do have the links for, because it's interesting and useful to look at the ways misogyny works.
But I won't entertain any suggestion that any particularities in the way trans women experience oppression pre transition negates that oppression entirely, or by extension their positionality as women.
Trans women are treated as a particularly reviled/disposable class of women, and that does have a lot of research backing it up, regardless of the specifics of which forms of misogyny each woman experiences at different times in her life.

First observational evidence of gamma-ray emission in young sun-like stars
A team of scientists from Argentina and Spain have reported the first observational evidence that a type of young low-mass star, known as "T Tauri stars," are capable of emitting gamma radiation. The study is published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.
Very energetic radiation from the sky cannot be easily observed from Earth. The high sensitivity of the Fermi satellite helps to solve this issue by observing the universe in gamma-rays, the most energetic region of the electromagnetic spectrum.
The Fermi satellite has been continuously observing the sky since its launch in 2008, and from these observations it is known that about 30% of gamma-ray sources detected throughout the entire night sky remain unidentified—the origins of these gamma-ray detections are unknown.
Some of these mysterious sources were studied by Ph.D. student Agostina Filócomo and a team of researchers in order to determine their origin. Several of the gamma-ray sources appear to originate from star forming regions, but the team had no explanation as to why—so they decided to investigate. The study focuses on star-forming region NGC 2071, which lies in the northern part of the molecular cloud Orion B.
To try and pinpoint the cause of these mysterious gamma-ray bursts, the team decided to look to objects known as "T Tauri stars," which are low-mass stars in formation. T Tauri stars consist of a central star and a disk of gas and dust orbiting around it, where planets could form. T Tauri stars are known for their fluctuating brightness, and are typically found near regions of active star formation.
The team noted that three unidentified gamma sources observed at different time intervals were coming from the part of the sky that the young star-forming region NGC 2071 is located. At least 58 stars classified as T Tauri stars are known to be forming here. There are no other objects in this region that can be a source of gamma-ray emission.
A possible explanation is that sporadic gamma-ray radiation is produced by T Tauri stars during powerful flare episodes known as "megaflares," in which electromagnetic bursts are produced by magnetic energy stored in the atmospheres of the stars.
Megaflares can span several stellar radii and last a few hours. Although there is flare activity on the sun at present, it is not on the same scale as a megaflare. Megaflares are far more powerful, and if they were to take place on the sun, would be detrimental to life on planet Earth.
This might explain the origin of multiple previously unknown gamma-ray sources. Understanding the physical processes in T Tauri stars also provides information on the early conditions that led to the genesis of the sun and our solar system.
Ph.D. student Agostina Filócomo claims, "This observational evidence is essential for understanding the origin of sources that have previously remained unknown for more than a decade, which is unquestionably a step forward in astronomy."
"It is also critical to comprehend the processes that occur during the early phases of star formation: if a T Tauri star produces gamma-ray radiation, it will affect the gas conditions of the protoplanetary disk and, consequently, the evolution of planet formation. The discovery of this phenomenon serves to understand how not only the sun but also our home planet, Earth, were formed and evolved."

Left-fascism: A generic term for fascisms that actively try to incorporate socialist egalitarianism and economic radicalism, and often to recruit from and even build bridges with the wider ‘Left’. Some might be best described as ‘fascists of the left’ (Ba‘athists, Ethnocacerists), others as the ‘left of fascism’ (Strasserists, Italy’s national syndicalists). There’s an argument to be made that only those deliberately and explicitly borrowing from the left count as left-fascist, which would generally exclude Strasserists.
Strasserism: A form of National Socialism — that is, fascism based on biological racism and antisemitic conspiracy theory — espousing a preferential role for the working class and something like guild socialism, inspired more by a medievalist völkisch ethos than by modern revolutionary doctrines (they were friendly to the USSR but so was Moeller van den Bruck). As always, read Postone.
It should be noted that while Otto was a fringe ultra who was expelled from the NSDAP in 1930 and went on to found his own paramilitary Black Front, Gregor was a high-ranking Nazi elite who ultimately distanced himself from his brother, actually tried to strike a deal with the conservatives behind Hitler’s back, and was assassinated mostly for threatening Hitler’s authority; i.e. the notion of a coherent left-wing ‘Strasserite’ faction in the NSDAP as late as 1934 is largely erroneous. That said, the idea of Strasserism has definitely exerted a strong influence on neo-Nazism, such as in the 1980s British National Front.
National Bolshevism: A term for a number of related phenomena: 1) a clique of White Russian émigrés who reconciled themselves to the Bolshevik state as a worthy continuation of Imperial Russia under new management, and later played a role in the development of Soviet patriotism under Stalin; 2) a tendency in Conservative Revolutionary circles gathered around Ernst Niekisch, a former socialist who moved right and saw the Russian Revolution as the recipe for an organic national rebirth; 3) a late Soviet tendency, both in and out of official Party channels, toward overt antisemitism, ethnic nationalism, and the rehabilitation of Russian national heroes within the framework of the Communist regime — today reflected in the ultra-nationalism and social conservatism of Zyuganov’s CPRF; 4) a neo-fascist political tendency founded by Aleksandr Dugin and Eduard Limonov in 1993, inspired more or less by all of the above and fusing expansionist Russian ultra-nationalism, nostalgia for the USSR as a bulwark against the West, and a provocative and eclectic style drawing from communism, anarchism, Nazism, and punk.
Russian National Bolshevism has been the inspiration for, among other things, ex-Strasserist Matthew Heimbach’s reformation of the Traditionalist Workers’ Party along radically anti-capitalist lines and attempts to infiltrate the progressive left, and the small Brotherhood group in Ukraine which is interesting for its intense Christian religiosity.
I do not know remotely enough about Francis Parker Yockey to discuss him adequately here.
Third-Positionism: What fascists would simply call the Third Position. It is often conflated with ‘nazbols’, but in fact third-positionists make no claims to having anything to do with the left, certainly not with communism. Developing in postwar Western Europe (originally Italy, later France, the UK etc before spreading elsewhere) under the influence of Julius Evola, the Strasser brothers, the European New Right as well as Perónism and other Third World national liberation movements, it advocated a European and global rebirth by carving out a holistic national alternative to the twin evils of capitalism and communism.
The goal is to reveal the bankruptcy of the political spectrum itself: apparently progressive issues were actually nationalist all along and apparently reactionary ones are actually revolutionary, right and left must both be dissolved and transcended in the organic unity of the nation (a very old fascist argument). Presumably the third-positionist adoption of causes like ecologism, anti-capitalism, anti-globalization, Third Worldism, and in at least one case (Mexico) even indigenous liberation is what makes people automatically conflate it with red-brown stuff, but — with the exception of Dugin’s revealingly-named Fourth Political Theory — there is almost never any actual ‘red’ involved (unlike for a National Bolshevik like Limonov or Heimbach): there doesn’t need to be because fascism is already a ‘third position’ in their eyes.
The National Front in its ‘Strasserist’ phase, mentioned above, is a good example and it’s telling that they were so infatuated with Qadhdhafi as to basically regard the Green Book as their political program; ‘International Third Position’ was a later breakaway from the NF led by Roberto Fiore of the original Italian Terza Posizione. IME the Third Position is often explicitly Christian, but there’s a very small Albanian group that’s neo-pagan (and probably better examples I just haven’t seen).

I'm curious, what are both of your thoughts on Eikichiro Saido? He's such a minor character, and yet he was added in to one of the most pivotal arcs/moments in the series for Ichigo and Rukia, and gets a cameo in the Fake Karakura Town Arc.
Were it not for the fact that Bleach has so many wonderful characters, Joe Shinigami would be our favorite character. (“Joe Shinigami” being the gender-inclusive catchall for any unnamed or functionally unnamed shinigami doing whatever or, usually, dying however.) But Joe Shinigami’s beauty lies in his placement in the frame—which is to say, not at the center of it. His is the beauty of the margin, doing things the audience usually doesn’t see, or isn’t focused on; the beauty of NPCitude. I love Joe Shinigami who have their own lives to live, and that tell us more about what it’s like to live and die as a normal shinigami; or more about who our fancypants shinigami are, or how they come across to people they either don’t know well or who just occupy a completely different positionality within the world than they do.
When we got this ask I texted my coblogger like, “Is that that freakin’ third wheel guy.”
Yes. Yes, it is that third-wheel guy!
Sorry if you’re a fan, OP, we are not. XD
Ungenerous reading of this man below the cut:
He doesn’t really do any of the aforementioned things, and seems aggressively committed to in fact existing as the opposite. Whenever we watch those episodes, we’re always like, SHE DOESN’T EVEN GO HERE. Why is he here? How is this improving things?
Does he:
… provide the shinigami perspective? I mean, I guess, but Rukia’s right there. She’s doing that.
… a different shinigami perspective, though? Byakuya and Renji will do a pretty good job of that, imminently! Also, we have plenty of perspective at home??? Ichigo’s and Rukia’s are the only ones that matter in this scene??
Plus we’re already offered POVs of the world around this moment with the Grand Fisher in such trenchant, beautiful ways! Via the frame of the Kurosaki family grave visit, re: Isshin, Karin, and Yuzu; and via Orihime and Tatsuki, elsewhere. Heck, even in Kon. We do not need this man.
…is he practically useful, though? No! He is useless!
…does he change the relational landscape of the original scene in interesting ways? No! He is in the way! How do these scenes benefit from Mr. Third Wheel? Ichigo and Rukia and the Grand Fisher are having a moment. If there are elephants in the room, its name is Grief, not Eikichirou. Or Masaki or Kaien.
We’re just like… why is he here... Our best guess is that this whole narrative arc was too good and the anime fears perfection. (Or, more diplomatically, it felt too heavy and someone decided it needed “comic relief,” here synonymous with That One Key That’s Out of Tune on this Piano Haha Guys I’m Quirky Right?)
We’re not interested in having Ekichirou recuperated for us. There’s literally so many other things that are already cooler than him, and not world enough nor time for them. Like New Third Captain Amagai! Or my best Playing Card Man, Inaba! Or Nagakiso Shuutetsu! Or any actual, bonafide Joe Shinigami!

To use myself as an example as a black woman I have a lot of complex emotions about beyonces place in the culture but I understand my positionality in Stan culture (swiftie) and keep my mouth shut
Nothing wrong with being like “this will sound wack to third parties” and then not saying shit lol
