A Simple Charm G - pipistrelle short oneshot set during gtn. gideon bandages harrow's hand and harrow gets flustered. the banter in this one is so good.

salt on the rim T - lifevoid short oneshot, modern au. harrow gets a bit drunk and calls gideon pretty. this fic kinda lives in my mind rent-free; the prose here is lovely.

We Have Always Lived In The Apartment T - labyrinthineRetribution / @thatneoncrisis long multi-chapter modern au, currently unfinished. (deep breath) sorry to be biased but this is probably my favorite fic on this list, if not one of my favorite tlt fics of all time. not to spoil anything, but the writing reminds me a lot of tamsyn's own writing style: there's weird identity shit going on, there's weird homoerotic shit going on, there's weird mystery shit going on. the girls are Heinous and there's bones. what more could you want from a tlt fic.

said the spider to the fly T - mutterandmumble short oneshot, modern college/uni au. harrow's having a bit of a rough time, so gideon comes over to help cook food (neither of them can cook). it's both funny and a bit bittersweet.

mune ga hachikire-sodē [my heart seems to burst] T - nosecoffee / @nose-coffee long oneshot, ntn canon-divergence where kiriona ends up rooming with pyrrha, nona, and cam & pal. this fic takes a really interesting premise and absolutely goes wild with it, and i love it.

never saw you coming T - igneousbitch oneshot, modern college/uni au. a very funny fic where griddlehark pull off a "heist" to put a fish in (professor) john's office. featuring such award winning dialogue as:

“This is my nightmare blunt rotation,” Gideon told her. “And you’re just my fucking nightmare,” Harrow said.

Intern the Sixth T - apocalypticTaco / @notedchampagne long multi-chapter pre-canon au, currently unfinished. a half-epistolary fic about the sixth going on an academic exchange trip to the ninth house, taking place about five years before canon. this entire fic is so goddamn funny and i love how much detail and attention the author pays towards necromancy, necromantic theory, and worldbuilding regarding the sixth and ninth houses.

sulking in bed with tonsillitis - never had it before, thought i was built different, crushed to discover i am, in fact, built the same (sickly). so thought was overdue a share of some of the fics i have loved that i've read these past few months (even though my TBR remains colossal), as well as some tune/travel updates, a lil writing check in, and a lil sneak peek of chapter eight of Beasts because the ex boyfriends are back, baby!!!

remember when i was like, AUs, not my bag! and then i read a load of AUs and realised i was talking out of my arse? weird. anyway, here is a lovely little hinny AU that i've gone back to a bunch because it's just really beautifully written and deeply charming and actually does something a lot of muggle AUs don't always do, which is play with harry's characterisation ever so deftly to say, hey, harry is harry, but if nothing bad had happened to him and james and lily lived, he'd be a little bit different, wouldn't he? this harry is our harry, but he's just that bit more confident, that bit more capable of digging an active flirt out of his back pocket. and that makes me happy!

The Last Something That Meant Anything by anonymous (Percy POV, Percy/Audrey and Percy/Oliver, short multichapter, 21k, completed)

i have a lot of percy thoughts these days. fanon percy, steeped in weasley bashing, doesn't do very much for me, so i really loved this belter of a percy character study that considers him both within and apart from his family in a way that attends to his trauma and inner life, but also shows the truth: he's not doing well, he does fuck up with a big moral lapse, and then he has work to do - interesting, deep, personal work - to make it right. please check the tags with this one, as it does contain reference to SA, but really do recommend a read if you feel able.

this brilliant short fic really left me with so many sirius feelings: it just gets the claustrophobia and the grief of sirius' last year alive exactly right, and it just has these fabulous cameos that have detonated a thousand deep sirius thought bombs in my head forever. l o v e d it

harry/ginny AU, where harry goes to stonewall high and meets ginny at a party. it's so tender and beautiful and stiff and sad and understated, and it's really stayed with me. also it does what all good hinny fics must do (have them chatting. just talking, hanging out, shooting the shit together. they just love to chat, those two lil magnets snapping to each other).

empire builders by she-crow (Prongsfoot, possibly canon-compliant but technically AU I guess, 25k oneshot)

i read this laid out beside a lake and needed at least four more days of lying by a lake to think about it. it's a) one of the most beautiful fics i've ever read b) rip your heart out and staple it heart-wrenching and good and c) some of the best sirius and james characterisations i've read that really serves as a manifesto for playing around with marauders multiships to really different characters in such different lights. the other beauty of it is that it could be canon-compliant? like it could be read as a fabulous doomed tragic love affair between two boys completely infatuated with each other and not sure where to put it. and i think that's kind of gorgeous. so yeah uhh big fan

other than this birthday microfic for mr potter, a bit of tinkering and dawdling with other misc projects that i pick up and put down over and over again, and my usual meta nonsense, i've just been writing Beasts! put four chapters out since last check-in, and am hard at work on chapter eight, which has some of my favourite scenes in the fic so far. we're gearing up for some chapters away from the castle (writing the winter break chapters in august. what am i like!) and some scenes i've been sat on for ages and some others that i'm having so so so much fun writing. i'm a michael corner stan now? who knew?

She lugs the trunk off the bus at the final stop and traipses around the warren of streets in Soho for a while, looking for the address written on the piece of parchment clutched in her hand. Finally, she finds the building, battered door with the doorbell hanging half off, and stands awkwardly in the street, catching her breath, until the machine crackles and a familiar deep voice says: ‘Hello?’ 'Hi, it’s me.’ She clears her throat. ‘It’s Ginny, I mean.’  ‘Oh, hi. Come on up.’  The hallway has an unmistakably damp, squat-like feel about it. Loud laughter spills out of the flat on the first floor, and a group of uni students, squabbling amicably among themselves, parade past her on the second floor staircase as she rings the doorbell and loiters in the corridor, feeling hopelessly out of place. ‘Your hair’s so nice!’ one girl with thick black boots and a face full of piercings says admiringly as she passes by, just as the door to the flat swings open.  ‘Oh, good, you found it. I wasn’t sure you’d be able to.’ ‘Why wouldn’t I be able to?’ Michael rolls his eyes. ‘You know, Ginny, seen as it's Christmas, maybe we could try not to argue before you’ve even set foot in my flat.'

She's so different than the type of Hawke I usually play, being Red-Purple and leaning into the politicking aspect of her role in Kirkwall. I've loved exploring a Hawke who doesn't run away from Kirkwall, who stays and works within the system to make things better. And of course writing her different dynamics with Loghain and Sebastian have been both interesting and challenging for me creatively.

It's so funny.

Everyone except Rendog, who he remembers very strongly as his enemy. This one started as a character study and you can tell, it's very deliberate and mediative with the characters, and it's just slowly growing through the questions of what they do now, and what they do with these relationships they have to people they care so much about and also those people don't remember it.

Benchtrio are Borrowers, and Tubbo gets caught by Emduo! Man, this starts with Tubbo falling into oil and not being able to climb out (he's eventually rescued by Emduo), and it's honestly terrifying. I really felt like I was a tiny creature clinging to a spoon. It continues to play with the fact that Tubbo is just so TINY and defenceless.

It all ends in tragedy, but oh my god the journey there is so rich and beautifully drawn. Each fic in the series is a different spot on the timeline and you see characters from so many different POVs, as events come into greater focus and you realize what the fuck HAPPENED to break people like that. This is very much a fic to read while spamming the sobbing emoji in the chat with a friend, but oh man I have to see how it all comes together and if ANY of my guys make it out. I don't know if any of my guys make it out! :SOB:

I'm not gonna spoil it but what happens when Joel's dogs show up looking for their master is SO GOOD and SO BAD at the same time.

Wilbur Soot is a demon who's tired of being bored in Hell and decided to go to Earth, where he gets a job on a Ghost Hunting show run by a guy named Quackity. Surely he has lots of oppurtunity for sin here! Two problems though: Quackity is really cute and might actually be a genuinely good person and Wilbur is falling for him, and Love is toxic to demons. This one is legitimately so very funny and such a fast read. I sat down to read the first two chapters and then i looked up and I'd read 46k.

Okay so the summary for this one was:

Meanwhile, SBI wants to know why their least favorite loudmouth little Hero has suddenly stopped talking.

And I read that and I was like "supinetothestars is going to get me back into reading tommy-centric superheros", and it's happened. It's so good, the characters are so thoughtful (and feel way more like canon characterizations vs fanon), and they run up against each other in really interesting ways. Wilbur is a paranoid bastard in a way that feels realistic and canon! The superpowers are interesting and interestingly played out (tommy's power is he can make himself unnoticeable!) and the relationships are adhering to tropes enough that they're like, oooooo, what happens next, I have a delightful suspicion, but they are pulled off well enough that they still feel fresh. It's really good.

Oh man how even to explain this one. The Dream SMP ensemble is imprisoned in this post-apocolyptic setting where they have to compete in challenges to win cards. The higher the suit of the card, the harder the challenge. And people will die, they are dying, the challenges are killing them. They don't know why they're here or who is making them do this, but all they can do is try and make it together despite a structure that keeps trying to turn them against each other and destroy them. This is structured with lots of flashbacks and mysteries, and the mystery of what HAPPENED to these people is ever-present. And how on earth they possibly make it out of this challenge with even one person alive. This one is such a mystery, I don't know what's HAPPENING but I want to KNOW. And that's it for this month! directors cut on the scu (shipley cinematic universe) please!

GOD you really went and asked for the director's cut on three fics (for now[??]) and I am going to try my best to remember my thought process, but I can't make any promises.

Like many (most?) of my fics, this whole thing started as a joke, quite literally "who would be the funniest person to catch Ted in a 'don't bully me I'll c*m' shirt"? and I became absolutely determined to write it. I knew it needed a proper lead-in to land the way I wanted it to, and in my head the only way that made sense would be if it were told from the perspective of Ms. Shipley. this noise is so loud (it's stressing me out) was the second fic I started writing after my 10+ year fic hiatus, and I used to love writing character studies and outside perspectives, so it honestly made sense in my head that this was a thing I was committed to trying out in a new fandom. I think I was still a bit overwhelmed by the sheer talent surrounding me in this one (still am), and part of me saw a character like Shipley, one we don't have much canon for, as a safe option--harder to fuck up characterization if they barely have any. IIRC I wrote the first ~1k words pretty quickly. I have some experience living below an eccentric neighbor (nearly) as obsessed with noise as Shipley, so I was able to draw on that experience, despite the two ending up pretty different. I made her a widow because despite her being listed in Ted's phone in S3 as "Mrs.", she's a "Ms." according to the subtitles and transcripts, and I thought "Ms." fit her better. A single woman made more sense. Some of the details I ripped from the headlines of my own life. I do remember getting a little stuck when I realized I had a backstory for Shipley, but hadn't yet introduced Ted. I landed on "Ted would be an interesting personality for anyone to meet, especially an older British woman" and followed that. As Ted's neighbor, she would have be privy to his getting acclimated in the UK from the get. And I still needed this to end on Ted's c*m shirt, so it made the most sense for it to transition into her perspective on a developing Ted/Rebecca relationship.

Oops this is getting (predictably) long, so I'm putting the rest under a cut.

I think it was around this time I became obsessed with another joke idea, of which you were central: "Ted accidentally asks Rebecca to put a baby in him," which became "Ted asks Rebecca to peg him, in the most roundabout way possible." This was good news because I had gotten stuck on how to introduce Rebecca into the Shipley character study and was ready for a break. can't take it back once it's been set in motion was born, and initially I didn't foresee Shipley making an appearance in it. I decided to split it into a multichap (still sort of regret this, think it works as a oneshot). At the time, it was the most explicit thing I had ever penned, and I was terrified. I wrote the first chapter and then skipped ahead and wrote a fair chunk of the smut bit to 'get it over with,' but then was absolutely confounded as to how to string the two together.

I knew I wanted the fic to focus on the established relationship (as I saw it) between Ted and Rebecca, the trust, the love, the fun, more than the actual, you know, pegging, so I let myself get wrapped up in the anticipation of being excited to try something new with a partner you're absolutely head-over-heels for. And while I knew in my heart the smut I had already written was alright decent good, I was still scared to post it, so I just kept adding backstory. I wanted to play with time shifts, so I tried that out (LOVED IT, SO FUN). The potential for hijinks was also high with a little delayed gratification, and that factored heavily. And mail mix-ups are always funny. Auto-complete addresses are convenient but also annoying if an account is frequently shared, and I thought it'd be believable for Ted's to be the last saved, and for Rebecca to be too excited (or distracted) to catch it. Once I realized that, Shipley was the natural person to accidentally open the package. And I wanted the reason she opened something not addressed to her to be petty as hell. Serving as the catalyst for the two (Ted and Rebecca) to discuss cohabitating wasn't initially in my plan, but it made a ton of sense within the framework I had come up with.

And despite writing out all of the backstory as a way to avoid first-time-smut scaries, it ended up giving me what I needed to (eventually) finish off the Shipley character piece.

But first! CAT fics were coming due, and I had signed up for "Deb dating/falling in love/getting engaged/coming back married from a trip abroad." Once again, a bit taken too far ('but what if Deb marries Shipley') resulted in a fic: lasciami solo un attimo (e non mi troverai mai). This one was written in a (literal) fever fugue state, there were a million jokes I wanted to include, and my outline consisted of a list of them. I had the established relationship from CTIBOIBSIM to go off of, and my own (still unpublished) Shipley lore, so the fic flowed pretty easily once I started writing (maybe this is a lie, maybe I screamed about it, but it really did not take that long, a few hours in total [broken up over a few days]).

Anyway, despite Shipley being central to that plot, I chose to focus more on Rebecca and Deborah's relationship, and how I could see it evolving post-canon, particularly once Rebecca was solidly in love. That fic is pretty dialogue-heavy, and I got SO lucky. Sometimes dialogue makes me want to rip my hair out, but I truly love writing Ted rambles, and figuring out how/where to include one in a fic he doesn't feature heavily in really gave me the juice I needed to finish it.

I still sat on the character study for a couple of months before finally adding the final touches and posting, and I don't think it would have seen the light of day had the other two fics not sprung into existence. In particular, choosing to have Deborah marry Shipley really made a lot of Shipley's character in the second half of the fic come to life--the waning libido, the (would never admit to) interest in Ted and Rebecca's experimental love life, etc etc.

Oof, as long as this is, I still feel like there's a ton I'm leaving out. The "research" I did, the editing process, some of my headspace while writing specific parts, the extreme cross-referencing between fics I did to make them work in the same universe, etc. But I'll leave it here.

Notes: Originally, this was going to be a silly, funny cute oneshot inspired on sitcoms ( Mostly " Bewitched" with a bit of " Alf")

In the campy style of Chucky, i wanted to do something funny involving Andy. Since in canon he is constantly suffering, my idea was to bring some of the funny side of the franchise to him.

I realized i don't have time to write it like a longer thing, but want to work on the idea, so i'm doing it as a headcanons list.

- Your first date was his first success in online dating. No matter how weird and off putting he would accidentally appear to be, you weren't getting scared.

- That alone was a factor Andy should have considered more cautiously, but after so many failures he was just happy that you weren't running away.

- He already had the Chucky head arround that time, and he loved to tease him about how dumb he found you. Not only for staying through entire dates with Andy, but overall.

- Through your pictures, bits of conversation he would hear or whatever his captor would tell about you, Chucky got that impression. You were a nice person, in his mindset, really dumb.

- " She's cute..." He would randomly comment at his enemy. "... I give her five minutes."

" ... Before i creep her away in our next date?" Andy would replicate. " That's not going to happen, i think she likes me for real. "

" Five minutes before finishing her off and that only if i'm feeling generous. She feels to me like the kind of dumb bitch that goes like ' oww, cute doll!', then picks me up and makes it really easy for me to stab the heart."

" I don't think you can do that anymore... Can you?" The man would tease back. " C'mon, Chucky! Go pick the knife, go for it!... Ríght, you almost forgot you don't have a body and can't ruin this for me."

The doll would avoid any incriminating commentary on that topic, but would still find a way to drive him mad.

" I can make gagging noises loud enough for her to think you have a torture chamber and run the hell away from here before you get to fuck her. "

- The first stages of your relationship were all about you both falling in love while mutually hidding a fundamental personal secret to each other. While you were trying to pass as the most normal ordinary mortal, Andy was keeping the doll head hidden from you.

- The thing is that because you are lying at the same time and panicking strong about being discovered, your lies reach semi believable combinations like some chaotic puzzle.

- Everything goes great precisely because neither of you want to scare the other away and apply pretty much the same strategies to hide your secrets.

- For example, someday you would be staying at the cabin and after discovering with horror that Andy never cooks for himself you promise to prepare an elaborated meal.

- He wants to get romantic, tries to sneak in the kitchen so he can help you out and steal some kisses on the process, but you stop him before he would see you were speeding things up with magic.

- " Wait... did you hear that?" You would comment as a distraction while covering your own tracks, unaware of how alarming that was for the sake of his own lies. " That weird noise over there "

Panicking over the remote posibility of you discovering Chucky, Andy would pass to focus in his clumsy mix of justifications.

" Noise? What noise? Don't worry, babe. I'm sure it must be a wild animal. I'm going to check it out for you."

- That's how this very paranoid man with a deep hatred for magic gets to be absolutely unaware of being dating (and falling for) a witch while she knows nothing about his strange magical pet.

- By the moment in which he starts to tell you little bits of truth about Chucky, mostly about what happened when he was a kid, you are terrified about confessing yourself.

- You are madly in love and don't want to loose him, fearing he would leave you out of thinking you want to manipulate him for evil just like that man did inside his favorite doll.

- So you vow out of love to stop using magic in order to keep your relationship safe, attempting to live a normal life. Since you don't want to be hidding from him all the time, the best solution you initially find is to stop.

- What doesn't go quite well because there is always something. Either because you wanna help out or you want someone new to like you, people would get exposed to magic behind their backs.

- When you meet Karen, being super nervous about that important meeting, you wanted to make her an introduction gift but nothing on sight during the shopping trip was convincing to you. Instead of some normal thing, you gave her a plant you grew by yourself.

- It felt appropiate to you because it was a meaningfull gesture, but the plant would grow with the speed and strength you gave it. Beautifully, but abnormally, leaving your boyfriend's mother wondering why was yours so different from other normal plants she has.

- In the same spirit, you would add lots of mini magical details into your boyfriend's life without him noticing.

- He commented you about a headache he had and after a few minutes of telling you, it is gone. Whenever you comfort him after a nightmare he ends up sleeping like a baby.

- His life seems suddenly ríght and he has no idea of why, guesses only that is because of having you on it but thinks about that in the romantical way.

- It comes from your love, but the magic you do is what helps him get those extraordinary results.

- You love Kyle, but she is your biggest fear. Andy does not find that concerning because he thinks you find her scary for being too normal when in fact it is the other way arround.

- You know she is the most fitting candidate to end up exposing you and covering up in front of her requires great extra effort.

- Although you act a bit clumsy arround her, she loves to see how happy her brother is with you and that plays some suspension of disbelief in your favor.

- Just when Andy starts to relax, distracted by that happiness he experiences with you, he finds out about Nica and the Chucky clones. His rushed trip to the mental hospital happens and he is back in the game.

- At first, he considers leaving you for what he believes would be your own safety, but he can't get himself to do it.

- He loves you so much and wants for once to believe that peraphs once the last Chucky would stop breathing, he would be free to be with you.

-Despite he kept you out of it to all costs, you notice his unusual dissapearances and worry a lot for him.

-What caused you to accidentally reveal yourself in the most shocking context possible: ríght after finding him as a hostage of Chucky.

- Contributing to his escape forces you to do magic in front of him. it's not like you can keep him knocked out Merlin style for a while to defeat the bad guy.

- In the meantime, Andy has went through the whole spectrum of emotions. Freaking out because he can't understand how you got there and is afraid the psycho doll will kill you. Confussion when you seem more preoccupied for him than anything and a blatant shock when you untie him without touching him.

- Just once he kills his enemy and you both are safe he gets to feel relief, but he finds himself then full of questions that you answer while begging forgiveness.

- " I'm so sorry! I know i should have told you before, but this awfull man who ruins your life made it so hard." You apologised to him inmediately. " You have all the ríght to hate magic, but it's part of who I am and i didn't want to loose you."

"... You travelled all the way here just because you got scared after i didn't came back on time... and somehow you found me through a spell? " He summarized part of your previous explantions. " How can i stay mad at you? You got into the hideout of a serial killer just because i was late for dinner."

-He is the man you want to marry, but you can't help fearing for what could happen once he would meet your mother, who doesn't shy away from her hate whenever you talk about him.

-Part of you wonders if she would be capable of an alliance with Chucky just to get rid of him.

-Still, you remain more hopefull than before once your boyfriend becomes aware of who you are.

-Your love is stronger than ever, you feel no one can separate you despite they could try.

01746 is up first. my M-rated, canon-compliant, angsty biography of rosinante. 55 chapters and about 270k words so. she's a larger item. it's split in half, so chapters 1-28 cover his life in the marines, and chapters 29-55 cover his life undercover. so if one aspect of his life is more interesting, you don't have to read the whole fuckin thing. there's some romance with an oc but it's not crucial to the story.

all bark and no bite is probably my favorite fluffy modern au, packed with doggies, undercover operations and self-discovery. i think it's pretty funny too. T-rated, 4 chapters, 14k words, crocorosi.

façade is my favorite darkfic i think? it's not horridly dark but like. it's a fucked up canon-compliant doviola oneshot so. it's certainly not loving or cheerful. T-rated and about 1,800 words because my heart couldn't handle making it any longer

the duties of a pool boy is another deceptively dark one. but! it's a modern au. crocorosi. it's my most recent work so maybe i'll fall out of love with it at some point but for now, i'm quite proud of it. oneshot, 6k words, M-rated. heed the warnings if you decide to investigate.

corazón de oro is my favorite gen fluffy/feel-good canon-compliant fic. sweet quiet moment with cora & law discussing the concepts of nightmares, love and loss. i cried while writing it and i almost cry rereading it sometimes. oneshot, 2,700 words, gen.

“One Year in Every Ten” is my ride-or-die, drop-everything-to-read-when-I-see-an-update fic; it’s everything I like wrapped-up in one beautiful package, and I’m head-over-heels obsessed. It’s made it into a few of my dreams, and I even tried to motivate myself to re-learn predicate logic, which I needed for an exam, by applying it to the case (let’s just say Sherlock Holmes is not yet out of the job—I did not succeed in deducing the murderer).

My favourites among your oneshots are “Lamentation,” “Nor All That Glisters Gold,” and “Sparkling Cyanide.”

“Bookbinding” also requires a shout-out. That fic has my whole heart, and everyone should read it.

thank you so much, pal. i'm delighted that you mentioned one year in every ten, not least because your ride-or-die enthusiasm for it has been a source of great support for me as we race towards the end with the speed of tom and harry seeing a chance to fuck.

i wrote it for two reasons. the first was that i am an enormous murder mystery fan, and i think it's a genre that lends itself really well to harry potter (what is chamber of secrets if not detective fiction?). in particular, the slightly odd whimsy of the detective fiction of the interwar period really works with the vibe of the wizarding world. in the work of authors like dorothy l. sayers and agatha christie you get this subtle and eccentric, but still quite profound, insight into topics like class, gender, grief, the legacy of war and so on, and it made a lot of sense to me for that style to be taken and applied to the magical britain of a decade following voldemort's demise. a lot of 'how does the wizarding world recover from the war' fic is quite heavy - which is great, and i love that for authors and readers - but i wanted to show that it is possible to say a lot about topics like the continuation of institutional corruption during the shacklebolt ministry, what happened to the people caught up in the quest for justice after the war, what happened to the people who got away with everything, and how gender, class, age etc. are considerably more significant in the post-war wizarding world than jkr seems to think they are, within a story which is also (if i say so myself) funny.

i also wrote it because i was getting sick of the sheer amount of tomarry in which harry is pathetic. i really don't like seeing one of the rowdiest protagonists in history reduced to a wallflower who is completely subordinate to voldemort - he refuses to bow to him when he's fourteen, when he's twenty-seven he literally doesn't give a fuck about tom's attempts to run rings around him. obviously, as readers of chapters 15 and 16 will know, this doesn't come without consequences for him, but i wanted to add to the number of fics with an impulsive, messy, domineering harry.

tom is not entirely sure how to cope with this, which is good for him. learning how not to be in control all the time is something he should think about...

lamentation also has a touch of 'i'm doing this because i'm petty' to it.

i get quite annoyed with a lot of the fanon which surrounds the black family - especially as it relates to sirius - but the revelant bit here is that i'm always uncomfortable with the idea that walburga was extremely and sadistically physically abusive to her eldest son. it gives orion a pass a lot of the time - although i don't think he was as bad as fanon makes out either - but it also seems to ignore what sirius himself says and implies about his family in canon. walburga (for sirius rarely talks about his father) seems, on the basis of canon, to have been emotionally abusive - cold and neglectful and playing sirius and regulus off against each other - and that emotional abuse is bad enough (as with harry at the dursleys) without extreme violence having to be added on top of it.

we can also say that, on the basis of her portrait, walburga was - by the time she was an older woman, at least - not very well.

i loathe the fanon of 'black family madness' or blood curses etc. i don't think it's unjustifiable as a trope - and anyone who wants to use it can do what they like - but i think it firstly negates the value of choice in the blacks' lives (by implying e.g. that bellatrix is unhinged because of genetics and not because she's chosen to become a terrorist) and secondly is often used as a reason to vilify the family even more, by suggesting that their cruelty (especially if they're women) is innate and unstoppable.

but it's always been one of my readings that walburga suffered from postnatal depression - a common and perfectly treatable illness - which she wasn't provided any help for. in this story, i wanted to explore how that would manifest itself in her relationship with her sons, in her isolation and paranoia, in her marriage, in her complicated relationship with her extended family, in her fear and her pride, and - of course - in the duelling emotions she would feel when she was told, by a solemn albus dumbledore, that sirius was dead.

my theory? following the canon idea that chip has been through so much he easily forgot about kenta and his nightmare shit, chips gonna be dealing with price, and i dont think its gonna be just for a couple months. price is behind arlins shit, and price gonna make chip think this shit is all his fault.

i love this story so much. i wanted to write a gentle kyh for gaon so badly, but that's difficult to do for canon unless i wrote them post-canon. so i made an angsty au. this story was also my first true foray into FF writing on a03 years and years after i had put content creation aside, and the story ended up becoming a gateway to a totally new side of TDJ fandom. people share so many beautiful ideas about the lawful family in their story comments that fic writing feels like a rich conversation. so many times i have written gahan one way to read somebody's thoughts in the comments and go ahhhh i didn't even think of that. hearing people's perspectives has been such a rewarding and crucial piece of writing bc i am a person who works best when sounding ideas off another. 

12. How many WIP’s do you have in your docs for next year?

straight for the heart, lmao. i have three, all 95 per cent ready for publication, in that the story is fully written out and the dialogue is completely polished in some areas but i am missing a key part that's critical for bringing the story together. it's too clunky basically. 

for example, when i was writing 'i hope you are lonely' the sex tape fic, i had everything written except a single scene: i couldn't figure out how gaon publicly responded to the tape. this was a crucial part of the story because his emotion would set the tone for how comfortable he felt expressing sexual desire for yohan and thus the progression of their relationship. was he hurt and afraid? angry and sexually frustrated? wanting revenge or to move on? and how did all those emotions shape what he asked yohan for, a man who would give him whatever he wanted. so this nearly complete draft was sitting in my GD for weeks until a reader asked me when i was updating and while i was typing out everything above just how i wrote it for you some part of my brain suddenly woke up and came up with a solution. i published the fic the next day. 

all this to say that the 3 stories i have lined up for publication are experiencing the same thing. basically polished except for oooooone thing. i need to tease out what a character feels about a specific event to successfully build the tension until it ratchets up to unbearable levels and needs to be released right the fuck now, i.e. theyre going to talk about it or fuck it out or whatever. but until that piece comes to me....these fics remain in the drafts. who knows tho, maybe after this a03 wrapped my ADHD brain will pop back in and do it's darned job. 

15. What WIP are you taking into next year with you?

all of them! i don't publish a multi chap unless i have the ending written. otherwise it stays a oneshot. rn i am excited for i hope you are lonely, elevator troubles, and everything everywhere all at once.

18. The character that gave you the most trouble writing this year?

isaac! i actually didn't realize this until you asked me in concrete terms, so thanks for helping me articulate the writing block i am having. it's the kang isaac in my money lender au. he does something that has significant consequences but needs plausible deniability for the story to work. i can't nail down why he does it tho. he meddles, and he's foolish and he causes trouble but not vindictively or deliberately. his heart is in the right place, but how do i write him without overly abusing the trope of the good guy who bumbled his way into something wrong? now that i'm asking myself this specific question, i may come up with an answer. 

thinking through this was loads of fun and a perfect way to spend lunch break pfft. you have yourself a good weekend 🎉🎉🥳🎉🎊🎉🥳

(Bucky Barnes x reader fic; this story follows the general timeline of the MCU - with some obvious differences. I'm horrible at writing summaries, but essentially this encompasses all the versions of Bucky we all know from the movies and show: the all-American military man, The Winter Soldier, the semi-stable 100-year-old man, the White Wolf, and beyond. Nili’s Benchmark Geraskier Fic Rec List

hey yall! I officially hit 750 followers (a few days ago, I blew past the benchmark without even realizing!), which is... insane. I truly can’t believe that so many people over the last year have enjoyed my presence in this fandom enough to continue to follow my work. you guys are so great and I love you all so much, so I decided to put together a gift for you!

this is a list of my favorite geraskier fics from the fandom, which I have been putting together over the last year or so. a few of these are big in the fandom, but a lot of them are smaller pieces that I feel deserve more attention! I have provided ao3 and tumblr links where I could find them, as well as ratings and summaries. Most of these are canon!verse because I’m not personally a big fan of modern au’s, but there will be a few of those scattered throughout as well. I’ve divided the fics into two sections: oneshots and multichapter. See the list below the cut!

Being in this fandom truly has gotten me through the pandemic in a big way and I have made so many good friends while here. thank you all for validating my weird obsession with these characters and enabling me in these trying times <3

Somewhere, deep in a forest, a man drags himself from his grave by sheer power of will. He lies gasping on the forest floor and does not know who or what he is. The world is wide and wonderful, though, and there is so much to see.

Or, Jaskier is so stubborn that he literally comes back from the dead.

Another fascinating addition to the mythology of the Witcher. Jaskier’s slow rediscovery of himself is so well done here. One I’ve come back to again and again.

That's what everyone said, at least, not that there was any solid proof. Jaskier had tried, more than once, to find some. Just a hint somewhere, of a real story, of real magic. But all anyone seemed to have was stories.

Jaskier was determined to find proof. He wasn't expecting to find a witcher in the process.

Fascinating fic with some really interesting worldbuilding, and a fresh new take on True Love’s Kiss. Also with some great art by @hehearse!

Just them dancing. This is a lovely sort of pre-relationship dynamic. So soft.

It isn’t a particularly troublesome accusation, or even necessarily an accusation at all.

This is one I read early on in the fandom, and it really stuck with me. The dynamic between Jaskier and Geralt is perfect, and the misunderstandings between them feel so realistic. The non-con is not extreme, but do mind the warnings. 

For the Space of a Heartbeat | T | 2021 | @drowningbydegrees

As it turns out, falling into bed with your very best friend who you are privately very much in love with isn't nearly so nerve wracking as waking up with them the morning after.

Just sweet, morning after discussions. I love to see them talking for once.

Greensleeves | T | 10,414 | @rebrandedbard

When Geralt crosses paths with Jaskier in the spring, the world is dressed in green. Quite literally. Everyone everywhere is wearing green, and it all comes down to a song Jaskier has written that, to his mortification, has become popular throughout the Continent. It's torment, being forced to preform the song over and over again and have his heart broken anew. But who is this Lady Greensleeves the people say Jaskier is so maddeningly, heartbrokenly in love with? At the baron's wedding party, Geralt is determined to find out.

This is one of my personal faves - there’s just something about Jaskier’s feelings being put on blast while Geralt remains totally oblivious that I think is so very them. And the resolution at the end is delightful.

I Don’t Wanna Fall (If It’s Not In Love) | E | 13,902 | @writinglizards

The first time it's out of desperation. Things get rapidly out of hand from there.

OR the building of a relationship through mutual wank sessions.

I love everything Ashley writes, but this one was the first fic I read by her and it still has a warm place in my heart. I also highly recommend It’s Been A While (makes me cry every time) and Tell Me Honestly

Like a Storm, Like a Flood | T | 1065 | @valdomarx

Jaskier is leaving for the winter, and Geralt can't bear the thought of not seeing him for months.

It was soooo hard to pick only one fic by George, but this one is so soft and sweet and yearning I just had to go with it. This is really just about Geralt finally hitting a breaking point and saying enough is enough.

one flesh | E | 10,763 | WARNING: MCD 

“Well, then. I’m a ghost.” Jaskier spread his arms grandly. Geralt held his gaze for a moment, then dropped his head and laughed. Jaskier put his hands on his hips. “Do fill me in on what’s so funny.” It wasn’t funny. It was just so - ridiculous, the things Geralt’s fucked up brain would invent. This had to be the last nail in the sanity coffin, it just had to be.

Or: Jaskier is a ghost, and Geralt is a mess.

Jaskier dies and comes back as a ghost to haunt Geralt into taking care of himself. Geralt does not handle this gracefully. This fic is so sad and heartbreaking, but the ending is so sweet.

Geralt wakes up warm, peaceful, and utterly content, which is how he knows that something is severely wrong.

Sigh. This fic. This is a time travel fic - Geralt ends up in the future living with Jaskier on the coast, just after the mountain. It’s slow and beautiful and extremely bittersweet, all about how we choose to love people despite how much it can hurt us.

With All the Continent A Stage | M | 4745 | @greyduckgreygoose

Later, Geralt learned that the play was four hours long. Four hours long. It didn’t feel like it. Most of it passed by in a fever dream of ominous music, dance-fighting and dryads in gossamer leaves, swinging from hoops attached to the ceiling. Yennefer made an appearance, played by Priscilla in a glittering negligee. She sang a song to Geralt about putting him “Under Her Spell”, and they had a sensual dance number which was made a little strange by a sickened Jaskier (played by Jaskier) coughing loudly in the background.

(Jaskier invites Geralt to a musical production inspired by his own life.)

Jaskier basically writes Geralt a love letter in the form of a four hour long play. Geralt is an idiot about it.

Multi-Chapter Fics

A Lover’s Lament | M | 25,364 | @somedrunkpirate

So,” Jaskier begins, as casually as he can, “you are telling me, that in theory, if I were to be in love with someone — anyone — that person could well be in terrible danger?”

Of all terrible and ridiculous things that have threatened Geralt’s safety, Jaskier’d never thought that loving him might be what will get him killed.

I honestly can’t count the number of times I’ve read this fic. The monster is so interesting, and the mythos of it fits seamlessly into the world of the Witcher in my mind. Jaskier being so afraid that his feelings are going to put Geralt at risk, clearly unable to see that Geralt is going through the exact same thing. I think about the scene with them looking at each other almost daily. 

A Pair of Gloves, the Scent of Roses | M | 24,134 | WARNING: Graphic Depictions of Violence

In the bustling days before the Midsummer festival, Geralt is sent into the countryside to deal with a monster - with Jaskier once again by his side. But the bard has not forgiven him, and while he's not hiding his contempt for the Witcher, he is recalcitrant about revealing his true motives for joining him. As the hunt turns into a desperate mission to save an innocent man and the monster is not what is seems to be, Geralt learns a few new things about his old friend and decides to finally attempt to mend the rift between them...

This is one of my favorite’s in the fandom - it feels so believable, the world is so rich and the oc’s are convincing and charming. Geralt and Jaskier feel so honest here, stumbling around each other but still drawn together. Beautiful beautiful beautiful

Bearing the will of the flower | NR | 11,449 

The way Jaskier sees it, his hobby of following a witcher around was always pretty likely to get him killed.

The fact that it's happening now because the witcher in question doesn't love him, he thinks as he coughs up crumpled flowers, hardly makes a difference.

My favorite hanahaki fic in the fandom. I’m such a sucker for these, and these two idiots being so incapable of talking about their feelings really makes them prime candidates. 

Food of Love | T | 22,488 | @wallatile-qvibbler

I brought a dead princess back to life through the power of song is the kind of thing that would have got an eyebrow raise even from the stone-faced Geralt of Rivia, so it's a good thing he and Geralt will probably never see each other again.

(or: the one where Jaskier channels magic through his songs, and it almost never goes as expected.)

This is a Jaskier and Renfri centric fic, which wasn’t something I knew I wanted until I read this. Jaskier is a bard which in this AU comes with magical powers, but it feels so well integrated into the universe that I wish it was just... how the Witcher is. Renfri is so good here, and even though Jaskier and Geralt barely even interact you can feel the tension and love between them. Cannot recommend highly enough.

Yennefer crawls over to her newest cellmate. They’re curled up on their side. Breathing, but only just. She’s not sure what she’s hoping for when she turns them over. Still isn’t when she sees that it is indeed Jaskier.

“Shit."

Yennefer and Jaskier each suffer in more ways than one at the hands of Nilfgaard.

Yennefer and Jaskier get capture by Nilfgaard and tossed into a cell together. Exactly what I want out of season 2 honestly. Their interactions are gold.

I’d Be the Choiceless Hope | E | 45,188 | WARNING: Rape/Non-Con | @lesdemonium

As a baby, Jaskier was visited by a fae, who gifted Jaskier's mother with Jaskier's obedience. As Jaskier grew older, the "gift" became more of a curse.

You know I’m not gonna make a rec list without listing Zoe’s Ella Enchanted au. Need I say more?

Silver and Copper | M | 56,139 | WARNING: Graphic Depictions of Violence | @kaer-cuan

Geralt is just supposed to pass through the quiet Lettenhove area. He's not anticipating being begged by its people to help save their viscount from a curse that keeps him from daylight. Lord Jaskier, they call him, and he's likely dying.

As Geralt struggles to untangle the ugly web of history that has lead to the increasingly complicated curse, he finds himself spending more and more time with the strange young viscount and wondering just what he might have been before the curse, and who he might be after. But things are not always as they seem, and as the curse tightens its grip on Jaskier, Geralt is forced to face the fear of failing yet another person whose choices were stolen from them.

Jaskier is kept from becoming a bard. Geralt finds him anyway.

This is a fic that haunts me. It’s very scary in parts, and mind the tags - there are some very heavy themes here. But it’s beautiful and touching, and Jaskier feels very true to himself even though his origin is so different.

Jaskier reached into his pocket, fingers grasping around the little box. He pulled it out with what he hoped was a romantic flourish, flipping it open to reveal the simple gold band inside. “Geralt,” he said, confidently, cooly, like this wasn’t terrifying, “Will you marry me?”

Geralt and Jaskier fake marriage proposals to get free deserts and shit but it goes tits up when Vesemir catches them in the act. Not knowing how to fess up, they go along with it for a while, which is hell because they’re both pining like mad. As I said, I don’t love modern au’s, but it’s merry so of course this one had to end up on my list.
