Please tell us what happened to Caleb and Felipe once they returned home with Felipe’s new height? Did Caleb manage to convince Felipe to get bigger one more time before he took another shrinking potion? And did Felipe add a little extra for his muscles…? 😉

I hate to tell you this, but Felipe hasn't done any changes to himself since the trip. Now that he was aware that there were even more potential problems with multi-dosing, he needed to go back to the basics before he did anything purely for the fun of it.

[For those who want a refresh, here's the story this refers to]

There was a lull in the action after their weekend getaway. Felipe had to go back to the drawing board and figure out why his dick grew when he only used a height potion. This lead to a series of new theories and plenty of experimentation.

This just reaffirmed one of Felipe's suspicions that the body, once it had been changed by a potion, was primed for similar changes. All it needed was the right catalyst. In order to test his theories, however, Felipe needed a willing test subject. Felipe had planned to test on himself first, but Caleb was very insistent that he be used instead. After all, if things did break catastrophically bad, Felipe was the only one who could fix it.

Felipe gave Caleb some of the base solutions for the potions and tested what would happen. Unsurprisingly, things like raw alcohol and water which were major ingredients in the tincture that Felipe used for his potion base had no effect on Caleb (other than maybe getting him a little tipsy). Next, they tried various herbs and powders that were also used in the brewing of the potions. Again, nothing seemed to happen.

Felipe was about to give up, but Caleb suggested that they try to brew the potions but only add one ingredient at a time. So Felipe brewed the base and then sprinkled a little of this in, let Caleb have a sip, sprinkled a little of that in, let Caleb have a sip, and so on and so forth.

The whole process took a while, but eventually, Felipe added a sprinkle of a rare type of root that was thought to have no medicinal properties. It was just something that some brewers used because it was "exotic" and had a bit of spiritual lore surrounding it. It was more often used by kombucha brewers than by any serious apothecaries. It sounded really fancy, and if you slapped it on a lable and sold it as a health drink people would snap it up!

In retrospect, Felipe probably should have realized that this root was the source of their permanent changes. It was the only ingredient that he used that he hadn't learned about from his boss. Felipe only used it because it was the hottest new trend in New Age Spirit Healing. As a professional potion brewer, he had always turned up his nose at those crystal clutchers and their fake magic, but it turns out, that in this regard anyway, they may have been on to something.

Felipe watched in awe as Caleb began to dwindle down and down. However, unlike in previous events, Caleb didn't shrink down to microscopic sizes before rubberbanding back to a new, permanently smaller size.

The good news was they now knew what was causing the permanent changes. The bad news was that one of the ingredients they had added to the mix before the addition of the special root must have been the key ingredient in the shrinking concoction because by the time Caleb had stopped shrinking, he was less than half his former size. He had gone from a shockingly short 3'6 to an astoundingly tiny 1'6. Once again, he had lost twice as much height as the dose before. Caleb now only came up to Felipe's knees. He was now toddler sized!

It was at that point that Felipe felt the need to go back to the drawing board. Caleb was now less than two feet tall! If Felipe messed this up, and Caleb had another shrinking spell as intense as the last one, there'd be nothing left of him!

Felipe spent the next week or so poring over old tomes and trying to figure out what each individual ingredient did. If he could isolate the growth ingredient, maybe he could cancel out the shrinking effects in Caleb's body, but he wanted to be absolutely sure he knew which ingredient did what before testing it on a human subject, and he wanted to be double and triple sure he knew what the end result would be of using an opposite effect on a target before giving it to Caleb.

While Felipe worked up the nerve to try a different blend of the permanent elixir on himself, Caleb ran out of sick days from work. With no choice but to either quit or show up in person, Caleb braved city to show up at the office.

There was no shortage of gasps of shock and surprise when Felipe rode up to the office on his bike... with Caleb riding in the front basket like E.T. Caleb was too small to even reach the handle for the front door, and he definitely wasn't strong enough to pull it open even if he was. Felipe had to open the door for him, and the entire office gawked as Caleb, now standing a full 18 inches tall - the same size as an American Girl doll, strode through the lobby towards his office.

Natural Philosopher. Your understanding of Primal magic comes from academic study and consulting manuals of natural lore. You gain Skill Proficiency in Investigation and Intelligence is your spellcasting ability score for Druid spells.

Runecarver. With a knife or a jagged fingernail, you can carve runes that hold great power. When you cast a Primal Transmutation spell that targets one willing creature and requires Concentration, you can expend one use of Wild Shape to cast it without Concentration instead. This creates a glowing red or green rune on the target. You must be able to see and touch your target, and your spell ends immediately if you use this feature again.

Seeker. You gain proficiency with one martial ranged weapon and one martial weapon with the Thrown property. You can use your Wisdom modifier in place of Dexterity when making a ranged weapon attack.

Shaman. You preserve the history of a people through songs and tales that connect them to the land and its spirits. Bane and Bless are Primal spells for you. You gain Skill Proficiency in History, and when you roll an Intelligence (History) check, you can add your Wisdom modifier (minimum +1) to the result.

Tree-singer. Your use of Primal magic is intuitive, and you sing with the Green. You gain Skill Proficiency in Perform, you can use a musical instrument as a spellcasting focus, and Charisma is your spellcasting ability score for Druid spells.

Witch. Much of your magic is distilled into brews and tinctures. You gain Tool Proficiency in Brewer’s Supplies. When you finish a Long Rest, you can create a potion that stores any Primal Abjuration spell you can cast that targets one creature. This potion retains its potency for 1 week.

Xenomancer. Little-known outside of Tu’narath, the githyanki xenomancers study the people, flora, and fauna of other planes and worlds. You gain Skill Proficiency with Persuasion, and Comprehend Languages and Tongues are Druid spells for you.

Hagging out: May tea

Before the tea lovers get to me, I admit I don’t drink much “real” tea, as in the green or fermented leaf of camellia sinensis. However, making herbal teas and infusions has been a great way for me to learn and experience the land around me. Before consumption comes a process of learning about a plant: where flavors come from and their correlating actions, growth and optimal harvesting times, the best ways to infuse. Then the marriage of plant and water offers a communion, a direct experience, consumption of the elements and compounds held within plant fibers, an intimate commingling of plant and human chemistry and spirit... But also, making herbal tea blends gets me to actually put to use to the plants I harvest, offers a healthy alternative to flavored beverages and something more exciting than plain water, and has helped create new traditions.

(I haven’t been feeling the best lately and have been drinking lots of tea while waiting to see the doctor... comfrey, melissa, and monarda have been providing a helpful concoction)

One of my most favorite traditions we have started since moving here is the making of Ivan Chai/Koporye tea/fermented fire weed. Every year we take a walk up the road to a patch of fireweed (chamaenerion angustifolium) collect some of its green leaves to roll and ferment into a local black tea replacement (often with monarda for a Vermont version of earl grey). It’s one of the best herbal teas (imo) and overall a really neat process to create. I’m also looking forward to turning my herbal teas into fermented brews for a bubbly addition (alcoholic and not) as I try to work through Pascal Baudar’s The Wildcrafting Brewer. And future projects include creating a good coffee substitute (I’m thinking dandelion, chicory, and chaga). But since it is May and the fireweed isn’t ready for harvest I took a little liberty with this month’s challenge in doing an infusion inspired by spring blooms.

Apple blossom brandy:

By far the best usage of Apple Blossom is in an elixir... tincture them in brandy, letting these abide in the sealed vessel for one week’s time before filtering. Honey may be added in discretion if the blossom possesses insufficient quantity of nectar. This flower-elixir serves as a Magical Key of Communion with the Genius of the Tree and should be taken in small quantity -but a few drops is sufficient- and used in conjunction with the Work of the Veil. We are approaching the fifth anniversary of our move into our home and it has stirred up lots of reflections and reexaminations (perhaps more on that next week...however...)

The apple is a keystone to our lives. Not only is it a major part of the reforested landscape of Vermont but also a supporter of the home providing beauty and bounty. They beckon our attention and keep us attuned to the seasons. We trim their branches during winters decline, revel in their spring blossoms, tend to thinning clusters of fruit for June drop, fend off the rose chaffers in the heat of summer, we watch and wait as plump crisp fruits develop culminating in an overwhelming harvest, bask in the smell of ripe fruit that fills the air in fall, which leads to the processing of delicacies for winter sustenance. This year will include dehydrating apples for tea and incense (now that we have a really nice dehydrator) which will be a nice addition (as we usually make way too much apple sauce aha) But with the homecoming anniversary on the approach I also wanted to create something special to connect with this tutelary spirit of our home.

Offering incense of rose along with some honey, I collected blossoms from three of the apple trees, one which defines our home with its crooked trunk and sprawling branches, one who provides the most flowers, and one who provides the most fruit. The petals covered in an apple cider brandy were left to bathe Friday till Friday under Venusian graces. (I was hoping to get in a second charge of flowers but a wind storm swept them away during the week infusion) Filtered and bottled this elixir will be first put to use in next weeks anniversary blessing. But I can also see this infusion being useful for incense, as well as special addition to libations and spiked beverages.

My Life With COVID-19: Week 1--Say Goodbye to Food

I never thought being a statistic would come with so much baggage. It's not that I thought it would never happen to me. In fact, I thought it already had happened to me. A couple of times. And maybe it did. But none of them were like this. I'm going to try to explain it as best as I can (you know, for science and future generations), but bear with me. COVID brain is definitely a thing.

I guess this story starts on 12/12/20. That's the day that my dear friend passed away. We were supposed to start a Dungeons & Dragons campaign together soon. Him, me, and three other good friends. But that Saturday, I got the text that he had passed away the previous night (not related to COVID, as far as I'm aware). Well, that following evening, those three other friends and I got together to remember him, to process some emotions, and to drink whiskey. The next day I woke up feeling… less than perfect. Of course, I thought it was from lack of sleep and too much alcohol, but it was weird. I didn't drink that much. Not to feel that bad. And there were some weird things, too. My eyeballs hurt (really bad) like I had a fever, but I didn't have a fever. And my fatigue level was through the roof. Other than that, normal body aches and lack of appetite that come with over-indulgence, so I didn't think much of it. Even when I woke up on Monday with persistent symptoms, I just assumed I was getting REALLY old and should never drink again. Yeah, I'm kind of dumb sometimes.

Monday and Tuesday could be characterized by general lack of energy, some mild congestion, and those danged achy eyeballs. And the only food that appealed to me was soup, and only in small amounts. "Just a little cold," I told myself. Even still, I had the good sense to be extra-cautious with my hand washing and mask wearing procedures. Unfortunately, I didn't have the good sense to get tested at that time. Mostly because my insurance doesn't cover testing (which is $150/swab), but also because I was in denial. I needed to work. My patients needed treatment. I was important… irreplaceable. And, of course, I didn't want to have to call my friends and tell them I'd exposed them Saturday night.

Wednesday was more of the same, but I felt even more fatigued. Then, someone else I'd come into contact with the previous week let me know that they'd tested positive. Crap. That's when the pieces started falling into place. And the last one fell as I was drinking a glass of alcohol (elderberry tincture, actually. Which I'd made myself as a COVID preventative… guess I should have started drinking it earlier…). While I sipped, I was actually hanging out with those same Saturday friends, but this time virtually. We were playing computer games. And about halfway through the glass of elderberry goodnes, I noticed that it wasn't nearly as floral or alcoholic tasting as it should have been. I assumed it was getting watered down, but suspicion started creeping up my spine. And by the end of the glass, it tasted like straight water (which tastes like nothing…). Like some infected dummy straight out of a zombie movie, I told no one and went to bed, hoping against hope that I would wake up to the smell of bacon (or anything).

When my alarm went off the next morning, I popped out of bed and shuffled to the bathroom. First thing I did? Took a long whiff of my deodorant stick. Nothing. I stuck the toothpaste up to my nose. Still nothing. Brushed my teeth. Foamy nothing. Went to the bathroom. Thankfully nothing. And then it was time to go downstairs, face my wife, and finally say it out loud. "I can't smell anything. It's completely gone." And that's the moment that it became real. No turning back. One rapid test later, and my fate was sealed. My boss started clearing my schedule for the next week, and my mind started racing with all of the people I needed to call. All the things I needed to do. What my life would look like for the next ten days. Even now, I don't know if the virus was effecting my cognition and emotions or not, but I do know that I was a mess.

By the time I got home, my world was spinning. I was angry, ashamed, confused, defeated, and overwhelmed. Mostly overwhelmed. I made sure my wife had pulled our daughter from school, and then I went up to my room. Not because I was quarantining from them, but because I couldn't handle being around anyone, even those whom I loved most (I mean, I'd be spending plenty of time with them over the next week anyway, right?).

Over the next hour, I felt like someone with an STD contacting all of my past… well, you know. I texted, I messaged, I called. Everyone was incredibly understanding. They all wanted to know how I was doing. And it felt almost shameful saying that I felt fine. "Just a little fatigued, eyeballs hurt a little, some congestion. And the no smell thing." It's funny how that didn't dawn on me yet. In the flurry of confusion, I hadn't stopped to consider what life without smell would be like. That revelation would come later. No, right now I was focused on the bigger things. I wouldn't be able to attend my friend's funeral this Saturday. I wouldn't be able to host Portmas (an annual Christmas celebration with those same friends) that night. I wouldn't be able to go to work for over a week. The days would feel like months… Have I mentioned that I'm a bit of a work-a-holic? Yeah, well, there was a BIG part of me right then that thought, "God did this. I wouldn't slow down. I wouldn't quit working. Even when I was sick, I was too dumb to take a step back. So God took my smell away. It's my fault for being so stubborn. And God finally stepped in." Yeah, those are some thoughts that I'll continue to unpack over the next couple of weeks, but for now it's enough to say that my thoughts and emotions were about as confused as my senses.

Speaking of which, my lovely wife made me a can of chicken-n-noodle soup for lunch. And it felt great. Warm, soothing, and satisfying. But with each bite, reality settled in the pit of my broth-laden stomach. It wasn't that I couldn't taste ANYTHING. There was something there. A touch of saltiness and a hint of umami (look it up). My tongue wasn't completely dead… but my nose was. And so, another cascade of confused emotions. More anger. More fear. Google said "most" patients got their smell back in a week or two, but for some it could take up to a year. And a small percentage never got it back. NEVER!? And at best, I didn't know if I could handle two weeks. Honestly, I didn't.

If you haven't lost your sense of smell, I'm sure you think I was overreacting. I would have, too, before it happened to me (Yes, I'm aware of the irony of my blog post a couple of weeks ago). But I want to try and explain the seriousness of this situation to you. Maybe fore some it's not so bad—those who are suffering REAL COVID symptoms. Those fighting for breath and for life. But for those of use who feel otherwise "normal," it's a panic-inducing affliction. For example, I'm a fledgling home brewer. Do you know what all beer tastes like when you have no smell? Like water with a ghost of bitterness on both sides of the tongue. Do you know what straight whiskey tastes like? Exactly the same with just a slight warmth in the chest. And so, my brewing hobby is done. Just done. And cooking? There's no point. Everything might as well be raw cucumbers and unseasoned French fries. Texture and temperature. That's literally the only variation. Well… almost literally.

In my panic, I NEEDED to know what my limits were. I needed to know if I could find any enjoyment from food. And so, I went to the extremes. Cloves, even when eaten straight, had absolutely no flavor. Straight salt registered a little on the tip and back of my tongue. Sugar felt kind of thick on my tongue, and if I tried imagining it, I thought I could taste it a little. Cayenne pepper was a little tingly in the back of my throat, but nothing more. Horseradish did nothing at first and only a little tingling on the top of my mouth afterward (mind you, I ate enough of all of these things to kill an elephant). And finally, I took a bite of a lime. Whoa! That about knocked me over. Imagine not tasting anything for 24 hours and then suddenly biting into a lime. That's exactly what it tasted like. Okay, well, I couldn't actually taste any lime characteristics, but that SOUR sensation registered off the charts. The sensation was both hopeful and frustrating, and those two emotions fit in perfectly with my general disposition.

That night, I was mean. Cranky toward my wife. She made dinner, and I was bitter about it. Airfried shrimp and tater tots with cucumbers on the side. She was TRYING to satisfy my texture and temperature requirements. And she did well. But it was still ash in my mouth, cotton balls in my stomach. And no one seemed to understand my frustration and fear.

But that night, I realized there was something I hadn't considered, too. My family is close. We hug and kiss. We cuddle. And so, there didn't seem to be any reason for me to start quarantining from them now. Besides, both of my daughters already had the sniffles, so the likelihood was high that they already had the virus. And my wife thought that she'd already had it a few weeks before. But… if she hadn't. If she was still susceptible. I wasn't worried about her safety, so much. She's healthy. She works out, eats right, and nurtures her already strong immune system. But, if she lost her smell, too…

Okay, hear me out. This isn't just about food enjoyment or fart detection (yes, my wife giggled at the dinner table because she farted right next to me without me knowing…). It's about safety. Have you ever considered how dangerous it would be to live in a house with a gas stove if no one could smell? I mean, presumably the kids might notice something, but would they understand enough to let us know? I'm honestly not sure I would take that gamble. Arizona Beverage Co., the company behind Arizona Iced Tea, is entering the cannabis market, The Wall Street Journal reports. The beverage company is partnering with Denver-based cannabis company Dixie Brands Inc. for the venture, as Dixie will both manufacture and sell the products through licensed dispensaries. Dixie currently makes and sells weed vaporizers, candies, drinks, tinctures, and topical creams in five US states. “You’ve got to be willing to try things,” said Don Vultaggio, Arizona’s chairman and CEO. “The upside is we’re one of the first ones in an emerging space.” Arizona is expected to begin its cannabis venture with vape pens and gummies, followed by beverages that may include tea, lemonade, soda, coffee, or seltzer. Dixie will begin selling the items in the US before transitioning to Canada and Latin America. Other beverage companies such as Corona brewer Constellation Brands Inc. and Coors Light brewer Molson Coors Brewing Co. have already begun to develop cannabis drinks, but Arizona hopes to be one of the first to officially enter the market. The Wall Street Journal goes on to point out that Arizona is searching for new avenues of growth as its core tea business continues to decline. The company is still the leading US ice tea brand by sales volume, but its market share has been decreasing for years.
