Booty Call (1997)
Tumblr media
There are some dumb, and I mean REALLY dumb jokes in Booty Call but I can't hold them against the film. The results are funny. Sometimes, that's all that matters.
Starring a (nearly) all-black cast, this comedy is about two buddies trying to get laid. Rushon (Tommy Davidson) has been dating Nikki (Tamala Jones) for seven weeks and still hasn’t gotten “any”. His best friend, an anti-commitment, opinionated skirt-chaser, Bunz (Jamie Foxx), accompanies Rushon and Nikki on a dinner one night as the blind date to Nikki’s friend Lysterine (Vivica A. Fox). The sparks fly, but before the boys can get what they’ve been after all night, they have to find all the necessary supplies to practice safe sex.
When the jokes in this movie are bad, you can’t believe how bad they get. I’m talking about a scene where someone confuses a dog licking them for a human's attempt at seduction. Not only that but they get really excited and aroused by the tongue-work, to the point where it gets more than a little embarrassing. I'll repeat that despite these, I laughed often.
The simplicity of this story is what saves it. Two friends. What do they want? Sex. What’s stopping them? EVERYTHING! The couples don’t get along, then they do... but the ladies aren't in the mood. Then the ladies are in the mood, but no one brought protection. Then the protection isn’t good enough and the guys have to go out and it just keeps going from there. The chain of events isn't unlike the one in Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle.
My favorite joke has to be a revelation between Lysterine and Rushon when they first spend an intimate moment together. She tells him what one of her biggest turn-ons are and it's a riot. It’s so outlandish and so un-sexy that I’m still laughing about how it plays out right now. Big laughs like that one make me defend the movie even though I recognize its flaws. It promotes safe sex. That's worth something too, right?
The cast members play off each other well. Everyone involved is evidently having a good time by going all the way with their material no matter how it might've seemed on paper. I don’t care who makes fun of me for it; I'm recommending the film. On the DVD cover, a quote from Leo Quinonesm of KIIS-FM perfectly summarizes Booty Call; it’s “Crazy! Sexy! Foolish!” I couldn’t have said it better myself. (Widescreen version on DVD, January 21, 2015)

In Living Color!
Still after all these years - In Living Color stands as one of the funniest comedy shows of all time. This show was Keenen Ivory Wayans’ labor of love - and with that love came a lot of truly outstanding & talented people who were not getting work anywhere else at that time.
The show was only on for 4 years, but to this day stands as one of the best American comedy shows of all time. Perhaps it’s due to the show’s unparalleled comedic talent that we have yet to see another sketch comedy show that has had the ability to out-shine Saturday Night Live (when it was on air) and today’s comedy talent just does not have that same level of creativity combined with raw energy.
Due to a fall-out between Keenen Ivory Wayans and the network - He and his siblings had eventually left the very show that they had originally created. Keenen Ivory Wayans later attempted to reboot the series, but that eventually stopped.
This show had some true guts and a lot of the humor on the show manages to balance an overwhelming amount of juvenile & outrageous humor (but it’s still absolutely hilarious and will have you laughing so hard ya might pee yourself).
...It’s crazy whenever I watch any of the opening intros because it’s like an all-star cast of people who were (at the time) nobodies just working for their break. Keenen Ivory Wayans is the man to thank when it comes to the raw comedic power of that show - without a doubt if it was not for his briliance & heart & soul, and providing good opportunities for those talented, and very funny people - that show would not have been as authentic and ground-breaking. To this day - despite the swarm of Politically-Correct people out there - I bet ya any one of those PC types would probably laugh their ass off at this show... So many things are oh-so-wrong, but damn - it’s SO Funny.
This one is for everyone who laughed their asses off at some of the funniest people alive.

‘The Proud Family’ Is ‘Louder and Prouder’
Tumblr media
‘The Proud Family’ Is ‘Louder and Prouder’ Than Ever Before If you were a kid in the 2000s, Disney Channel likely dominated your viewing habits. Whether it was an original movie like Halloweentown, or a coming of age sitcom like Lizzie McGuire, there were plenty of options to keep your interest. But 2001 saw something super special arrive for Black kids: an animated show featuring a family that looked just like their own The Proud Family was the first show of it’s kind and a historic moment in Black history. It left a cultural footprint with it’s catchy theme song from Destiny’s Child, and it’s storylines based around key parts of the Black experience.
Now, more than 20 years since it’s premiere, The Proud Family is back with a sequel series called The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder.
“It never left,” Tommy Davidson, who plays the patriarch Oscar Proud, told EBONY. “People were touched so much by it, and my children were too. So when there was talk of it coming back after 15 years, we talked to Ralph Farquhar and Bruce Smith, and all the people involved in it. And finally it came. And we just got back to work. We got back to work because we knew how good we were.” Stepping back into their roles “wasn’t hard,” according to Kyla Pratt, who plays the show’s main character, Penny Proud. She got the gig when she was just 15 years old.  “I feel like this character helped develop me as a young woman,” said Pratt. “It helped me become the person I am today. So it wasn’t difficult to get into a studio and be able to flashback to those times where I had those teenage years of thinking a certain way, or feeling a certain way or dealing with family a certain way.”
Jo Marie Payton’s distinctive voice is back to bring Suga Mama to life, and she didn’t skip a beat.
“That 20 years seemed like 20 minutes once we got back together,” said Payton. “We were with our same wonderful producers, and we had wonderful writers and the scripts, the storylines were so good. They made it easy for us to just activate back into our space and our reason for doing it.” For Paula Jai Parker, returning to role of Trudy Proud was a major personal milestone in her career.  Let’s be honest. Women, you know, we kind of are told we have a shelf life in Hollywood and life in general,” said Parker. “When the call came in, it just really reconfirmed that women, we’re not just things you can put on a shelf. We are ageless, we are priceless. And for Disney to recognize that and bring the Proud Family back just at this time in my life… This, this has been a blessing.”
Unlike 2001, Louder and Prouder entered production in a global pandemic.
“I don’t know about everybody else in the cast, but it seemed like Armageddon to me the March before last,” said Davidson.  Instead of recording lines together like they did in the early 2000’s, the cast had to pivot to what so many Americans are now accustomed to; working from home. Each actor was set up with their own recording studio to track their lines.  “Boy, I got another skill set going on!” said Payton. The Family Matters actress is based in Miami and had help from her grandkids and children to get her studio together, but recording in the summer proved challenging. “You  have to turn off everything, the air conditioner and all that stuff, and you’re in a dedicated closet. It’s hot!”  “I literally have pictures of me putting a pillow over my head trying to get the sound to stay in,” joked Pratt. Now a mother of two, the actress also had to juggle taking care of the kids between reads.  “I have to tell my kids like, ‘Hey, y’all have to be quiet for a little bit,’ which of course is difficult. They’re my children. They’re loud as you know what. So I’m like ‘baby, please sit down for an hour. And just don’t yell nothing.’ So it was a struggle.”
The new series continues the story of Penny Proud, now 14-years-old, while updating the content for current times, with a “woke” neighbour who gets a little preachy, social media bullies, and new neighbours from the LGBTQ+ community.
“It still has the same essence of the original. But of course, we had to update it for 2022.” said Pratt.  “We had to make sure that we tackled things and talked about things that need to be talked about. And that’s the best thing about our show back then, we talked about things that everyone shied away from. And now it is not any different.”
“You understand how important it is that family is family no matter what or who they are, where they are, who they love, or where they come from,” said Payton. “Now we’re bringing some of that to you.”
“It actually speaks to what’s going on now,” said Davidson, who sees the follow-up series as a way to appeal to those who grew up with the show and a new generation.  “There were a lot of social shifts over this pandemic. That generation that grew up is the one that instilled a lot of change. And so we’re going with that change. We’re just riding the wave of what’s happening. We actually are helping the younger people that are watching it—the kids—we’re helping them understand what’s going on now without having to get complicated,” adds Davidson “We’re doing it through this family.” The Proud Family; Louder and Prouder premieres on Disney+ February 23. Thoughts : Bamboozled (2000)
Tumblr media
Some directors are visionaries, but it also seems like some have a direct line of sight into the future.  What is presented as a satirical, extraordinary farce of modern events can quickly turn into reality right before our eyes, making those particular satirical musings much heavier in retrospect.  Spike Lee has never been shy about sharing his views and opinions on our society, but with Bamboozled, he seemed to tap into something deeper, as if the film was a warning for the change to come.
Pierre Delacroix, born Peerless Dothan (Damon Wayans), is an uptight, educated high-level creative executive for television network CNS.  As one of the few black writers at his level, he finds himself continuously frustrated with the lack of diversity shown to minorities on TV, as well as the lack of opportunities for diversity on the creative side.  Under the pressure of his boss Thomas Dunwitty (Michael Rapaport) to deliver a groundbreaking hit show, Pierre teams up with his personal assistant Sloan Hopkins (Jada Pinkett Smith) to hatch up a show so blatantly offensive that it will hopefully get him fired from the network.  The two, inspired by street performers Manray (Savion Glover) and Womack (Tommy Davidson), develop Mantan’s New Millennium Minstrel Show, a repackaging of the blatantly offensive imagery America used in the past to portray African-Americans in media.  To the surprise of everyone, the show becomes a commercial and critical success, only further tying Pierre down into the life he’s come to despise.  Slaon’s brother Big Black Afrika (Mos Def) and his rap group The Mau Maus, however, are not fans, and immediately start cooking up a scheme to put the show to an end.  As the show takes on a life of its own, friendships and relationships are tested, and Pierre is forced to come to grips with himself via deep soul searching.
It cannot be stressed how on the nose Spike Lee was with this extremely biting satire of what the world of entertainment was becoming.  At the time, sitcom television was still a thing, but it was rapidly fading out of existence thanks to things like reality television, the internet and home video technology raising in quality while becoming affordable to the average person.  The gap between entertainment and reality began to blur, and while Bamboozled seemed to be a stretch at the time, many of its premonitions have gone on to become reality.  Some are harmless, such as The Roots becoming a TV band.  Other aspects, such as blackface becoming more commonplace, have sadly seen their time in the spotlight recently.  The entire look of the film was jarring at the time thanks to the consumer-level cameras used for the non-television portions, but these days you see similar quality work in theaters, on television and on YouTube quite often.
Lee masterfully tells his story in an extremely dark satirical manner, even going so far as to define satire at the start of the film.  This definition serves as a clear marker for where Pierre’s head is at, only for this state of mind to be rocked numerous times, shown via a set of wonderful repeating cuts and the ever growing presence of minstrel-based memorabilia that literally begins to overtake his office.   His use of well-defined characters who are either clearly set in their ways or victims of their circumstances is rewarded as many of these characters are either debased or driven to action due to a feeling of moral superiority.  Add in callbacks to classic routines taken from source material like Amos & Andy, mixed brilliantly with lifts from films like Network, and the result is deeply insightful.  You may even find yourself looking at things you held in a high regard in a much different light.
Damon Wayans and Tommy Davidson, both known for their comedic chops, are simply brilliant in this film with both their comedic timing and dramatic depth.  Savion Glover brings a personality to the screen that matches his dance skill, as well as an innocence that makes his story that much more painful as you watch it unfold.  Jada Pinkett Smith is on fire as usual... as Lee puts it in the supplemental material, she is feminine enough to demand attention while strong enough to hold her own with anyone she shares the screen with.  Mos Def plays against type for his role, managing to be humorous while still voicing the pain that many people birthed with awareness feel.  Michael Rapaport is equal parts brilliantly funny and deeply scummy, making his performance stand out.  Thomas Jefferson Byrd also comes through with a strong performance as Honeycutt, drawing comparisons to iconic characters like Lonesome Rhodes (but given a blackface treatment).
I am often surprised that this film has not received more acclaim as the years went by.  Upon its release, many went to their favorite Spike Lee adjective set, calling it things like ‘controversial’.  At the time, and even more so now, I find it more of an insightful warning and less of a shock piece.
