The total solar eclipse of 1860 was recorded near Fort Steilacoom, Washington Territory.

Here is one of the older documents describing the total solar eclipse that happened right here in (what is now Washington) near Steilacoom, only about an hour south of Seattle! On Monday, April 8, 2024, Yates County and the Finger Lakes region will find themselves in the path of totality for a total solar eclipse. When the moon passes between the sun and the earth and completely covers the sun, those present in the area will experience approximately 2 minutes and 52 seconds of twilight conditions in the middle of the afternoon, according to the Visit Finger Lakes website. The eclipse will begin at 2:07 p.m. Eastern time, peak at 3:20 p.m., and end around 4:33 p.m.

Being within the path of totality for a total solar eclipse happens “less frequent than once in a lifetime,” according to the website, as a solar eclipse takes the same path about every hundred years or so. Indeed, the next total eclipse to take place over the Finger Lakes region is expected on October 26, 2144. One would have to be almost a centenarian to have witnessed the last total eclipse that reached Yates County, which took place on Saturday, January 24, 1925.

A Pages Past item in January in The Chronicle Express brought to attention a total solar eclipse that passed over Yates County 100 years ago in 1924. Actually, that newspaper item – from the Yates County Chronicle of January 23, 1924 – was in error and a year ahead of itself. An article in that newspaper on July 18, 1923 had the correct date – preparing about a year and a half ahead of time – and offered some more details about what people could expect from the event.

The path of totality would be a belt about a hundred miles wide, with Penn Yan located around the middle of the belt. The eclipse in Penn Yan was anticipated to begin around 8 a.m. and end at 10:28 a.m., with the total eclipse taking place from 9:13 to 9:15 a.m. As the date got closer, the newspaper carried more coverage of the event: “There is much scurrying about and preparing of instruments and maps on this old Earth as the time approaches for the total eclipse of the sun,” the Chronicle noted on January 7, 1925, stating astronomers around the world were working together to gather data about the moon’s behavior before, during, and after the eclipse. “Something a little out of the ordinary is taking place in the vast heavens, and earth beings who cannot alter or assist it in any way are at least going to learn as much as possible from it.”

The following week, January 14, famed local scientist Berlin Hart Wright wrote an article from his Florida home for the Chronicle headlined “Eclipse Will Be Visible in Yates.” He situated Penn Yan about 25 miles north of the central line of the path of totality, meaning Yates County’s experience of the total eclipse would last about one minute and 35 seconds. Being north of the central line also meant those in Yates County would observe the eclipse from southern edge of the sun. Wright ended his article with advice that still applies to this year’s total eclipse: “Caution: Use smoked or colored glasses to protect the eyes.”

The Chronicle of January 21 – three days before the event – noted the totality of the eclipse would reach Yates County at 9:07 a.m. and last about a minute and a half. This article also pointed out Bluff Point as “the very best location anywhere in this section of the state” to witness this phenomenon because it was the most readily accessible. “From it one will not only be able to see the corona but also the dark, cloud-like shadow of the moon as it sweeps rapidly across the face of the earth,” the article stated. And the rules to be followed 99 years ago are ones to be followed this year: “When the eclipse is partial, care should be taken to use a smoked glass or a camera film or plate that has been exposed to protect the eyes from the strong rays of the sun. When the eclipse reaches totality, however, these should be entirely discarded and the naked eye used for observation.”

On the day of the solar eclipse, however – as reported in the Chronicle on January 28 – people observing from the north and west sections of Penn Yan “were disappointed when heavy clouds hid the sun just before totality.” Those on the east and south side of the village “saw the whole show.” The Milo Center column in the same newspaper asserted, “The view of the total eclipse of the sun Saturday morning was perfect in this place. ‘Surely the Heavens declare the glory of God.’”

During the eclipse, L. Gerome Ogden, of South Avenue, “took occasion to learn” if it was true that chickens go to roost – or settle down to sleep – during the darkness of totality. “He found that a number of pullets and cockerels went upon the perches but the old hens and roosters did not leave the floor though they seemed somewhat disturbed by the unusual darkness,” the Chronicle wrote. Meanwhile, Dickie – a canary owned by Maxine Kirkpatrick, of East Elm Street – “believes there were eight days in last week”: At daybreak, Dickie “hopped from his perch, shook himself, ate his breakfast, and started the day with a song.” But when it became dark at 9 a.m., the bird “tucked his head under his wing, apparently going to sleep,” and when the total eclipse passed, “he hopped from the perch, shook himself, ate another breakfast, and started what he believed to be a new day with another song.”

Mr. Burnell “secured some good views of the eclipse” from the roof of a building at Keuka College, though clouds got in the way there. Banks and businesses delayed their openings for an hour to allow the total eclipse to pass, and electric power plants anticipated generating power to their utmost capacity due to heavy demand during the period of darkness.
