Batman & Robin (2009, vol. 1) #ochireads
BATMAN REBORN
By Grant MORRISON & Frank QUITELY
"Batman and Robin hit the streets with a bang in their new flying Batmobile to face an assemblage of villains called the Circus of Strange and investigate the abduction of a child by the mysterious Domino Killer. But can this new Dynamic Duo find a way to work together?" [x]
DISCLAIMER: This retrospective may assume that you have a baseline knowledge of some of these arcs. Remember, this is all in the spirit of friendly story analysis and healthy discussion! All opinions are my own.
OVERVIEW:
This run is low-key the other reason I started this mission in the first place. Dick and Damian's relationship is precious to me, despite knowing nothing about this era, somehow living a spoiler-free life.
When I make these reviews, I usually read the entirety of the comic at least once, and then a secondary comb through for the highlights that are worth commenting on.
On my first read of this arc, I wasn't that impressed by it (just from a Damian reading POV). Like, my initial notes were REALLY MEAN for some reason 馃槄. Damian's rocky introduction as Robin isn't explored as much as I would like, and character moments are a bit short-lived in favour of more traditional comic book adventures.
But now on my second read, it's been a lot more enjoyable, perhaps since I'm skipping all the exposition now in favour of focusing on the layers to each isolated "Damian moment".
This might end up being a false opinion, but I'm beginning to notice a trend of Morrison loving to cram as many rogues into a single plot as possible, and I??? kinda don't care for it??? It almost feels like they get more screen time/development than the actual Dynamic Duo haha.
Quitely's panelling and kinetic work is so masterful, it balances out Morrison's villain exposition scenes that I'm personally not interested in.
Overall, the action is fantastic, but definitely takes priority over Batman and Robin's new relationship. I hope we'll reach a good balance soon!
REACTION COMMENTARY: (5 minute read)
Our first look at 2009's contemporary Batman and Robin! A solid establishment of characters and their dynamic. Damian starts it off a little arrogant, but immediately follows up to let us know that he is taking the role of Robin very seriously. He's not entirely unreasonable when it comes to the rules... sometimes!
(Robin's sleeves are coloured incorrectly here lol)
I love this entire page, I just had to share it.
I don't believe we actually get to see Damian opening up to Alfred in those early days (please correct me if I'm wrong!), but this is a rare instance of "tell, don't show" being convincing. Not only is Damian perfectly capable of being polite (at least tolerant), but it also doesn't feel unnatural or forced. It is not hard for him to spare a thank you for gestures he genuinely appreciates.
Especially compared to Damian's first night in Gotham, I'm reminded in contrast where completely trashes Alfred's supper. I wonder if this is a direct call-back?
Above: Batman & Son (2006), Grant MORRISON & Andy KUBERT
Great little purposeful pause in his dialogue here. Even though Damian is clearly more comfortable with life in Gotham, he's still very private. You can tell he almost wants to say more but he's so clammed up with all these feelings and thoughts left unexpressed. Even to Alfred, the one person who he trusts the most in his current life, it's still not enough for him to open up fully.
Damian may have impulsive episodes, but he also has contemplative and perhaps even self-reflective moments. If Dick wasn't in the room with them, would Damian have said what was really on his mind?
So Robin gets in trouble from separating from Batman during a fight (against direct instructions), which seems like typical "demon brat" behaviour. Damian has never had to ask for permission to act upon his instincts. Arrogant? Probably. But the act is less selfish than it first appears-- he saw an opportunity to be helpful and he took it without hesitation.
Nice little "growing pains" moment here! Just an extension of the above point, where Damian feels like he's being selfless. He's already made (what he perceives as) great sacrifices and compromises to stay in Gotham and become Robin. Understandably, he becomes frustrated when these efforts go unrecognised (and perhaps it is an extra sting that his father is not here to see it).
Even when Damian "runs away", he's still focused on finishing the mission despite knowing he will be reprimanded or even punished for it. Or perhaps, does he think it will eventually earn him respect and praise, in a sort of "ends justify the means" effort?
Damian might be a brat, but he is a noble brat. I truly believe when he makes a promise, he does not make it lightly. His word is his bond.
CUTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Whoops, so much for promises... Great visual with Damian reaching his arms out, with a POV-shot to show that he hasn't lost focus of his promise, but is simultaneously confronted with his failure to keep it. There are several moments where Damian expresses guilt over this throughout the arc.
Quitely might be the best sequential action artist I've seen so-far. Damian is so small! Dick also stepping up with the praise that Damian is obviously (secretly?) in need of.
I haven't really been highlighting Dick's moments, otherwise this post would be thrice as long. But of course he has some really amazing character beats as he not only fills the role of Batman, but also a father figure. A must read for Dickie fans!
This interaction kinda gets brushed over but, but let's acknowledge how Damian is in genuine disbelief that Dick not only went out of his way to look for Damian after their argument, but also had no hesitation to come to his aid. Did Damian really think Dick already gave up on him? Was he expecting a punishment instead?
Regardless of how Talia showed her affection, I do think Damian grew up with the impression of "conditional love", simply due to the expectation to perform every day in his upbringing.
A more obvious example of this is Damian's first few nights in Gotham where he, without being prompted, goes on a (albeit murderous) crime fighting mission, and tries to assume the mantle of Robin multiple times, thinking that is what he needs to do to get Bruce to accept him. Being his son simply is not enough.
Dick doesn't really have a true familial affection for Damian (YET), but I suppose you could say it's more like an "unconditional responsibility". Despite any and all altercation, they are still Batman and Robin! Partners stick together, through thick and thin! Maybe that kind of trust is foreign to Damian.
Damian testing the waters with a little joke to make sure everything between him and Dick is okay again 馃ズ
SOOOOOO CUUUUUUUTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Somewhat interesting how a more "popularised" characterisation of Damian would probably dread functions like this, but in this instance he is revelling in the positive attention...? And he doesn't mind being called adorable? Makes me wonder how many fancy dinners he has had to attend as an Al Ghul prince.
Must I say it again? So cute... It's another mainstream misconception that Damian is a stick in the mud, but it's not hard to find his sense of humour if you just look for it; its dry and sarcastic, but at the core of it, also extremely cheeky. He's so pleased with his little joke. Just another small sign that Dick has earned a fraction of his trust.
There's too many small moments in this arc for me to share them all, but from now on Damian shows increasing restraint and (mostly) respects Batman's leadership. He's really trying!
Another reason why "mainstream fans" hate Damian is for his cruel insults, but tbh that's what makes him ICONIC 馃槶!!! If you separate Damian from being a babysitter's nightmare, this is the kind of smack talk worthy of the Robin mantle, and people are too cowardly too admit it.
There's a lot of obvious parallels between Jason and Damian too, I think. I'm sure that if we had a phone poll to kill off Damian, the result would be similar as well 馃ゴ-- but now I think both Robins are in a better standing with the fandom! Idk if we'll get any substantial Damian & Jason moments in future comics, but they have a really wonderful (potential) dynamic imo.
(Get it, grandma)
Ohhh they are two perfectly lame peas in a pod... GET A LIFE! How will Red Hood recover from such a sick burn. Robin really letting all of Gotham know that he means business.
Damian once again expressing guilt over not saving that girl. I'm vaguely "disheartened" at how Dick dismisses it-- not at the character himself, but the fact that Dick hasn't bonded with Damian enough yet to understand that he's having a tiny vulnerable moment.
Although the writing itself quite literally brushes past it too. No time spent to really explore what Damian is thinking beyond just saying he feels remorse and it being disregarded in favour of being typified into an unfeeling punk by a close ally.
HOMOPHOBIC DAMIAN WAYNE??????????????? Anyway, I guess it's okay since Robin got to keep the bazooka (did he somehow sneak it into battle? Or did Batman eventually give in hahaha)
So Batman and Robin confront the final big baddies of this arc, save the day, AND UH... ROBIN GETS SHOT IN THE SPINE??? Idk if it's being implied here, but there's something kinda endearing that Talia had a squad of League assassins shadowing Damian this entire time? Like, "yes my love, I suppose you can be Robin if you desire" but she still worries enough to keep a close eye on him. New definition of a helicopter parent 馃馃馃挜!
I know this ends kinda abruptly, but that's really it for the Damian highlights. Once again, so-far it seems Morrison uses Batman & Robin more like a "perspective vehicle" to explore the villain characters, which I suppose is something exciting for the majority comic book fans, it's just not for me, personally.
Damian gets some nice little moments, but a deeper exploration of his early development often gets overshadowed by the previously mentioned plot progression. As you can see, there aren't that many stand out moments in his Robin debut, but it is still early days. Hopefully future runs will have more genuine character moments between our Dynamic Duo!
Anyone else have favourite moments to share? Personal analysis and thoughts? Let's talk about it 馃グ!
