cat!!!! hi!!!! i want to get my non-reader friend into reading. he probs won't read anything over 150-200 pages so i'm trying to find an entertaining short book. all the short books i love are essays or philosophy or things i think he could like in time but would probably find dry at the start (especially cause he hasn't read anything recreationally for years). so im at a loss and wanted to know if u have any recs for short books that are page-turners/easy to read <3 hope ur having a good day beloved xo

first of all sorry for replying late but i was sleeping and then i had to go to the BANK but anyway i have compiled a little list of books i loved that are under 200 pages. there are lots of classics that are shorter and i've included them even though i think some of those would be stuff that you or him might have already read!

contemporary fiction

open water by caleb azumah nelson: THIS IS SUCH A GREAT ONE that i can't imagine anyone not enjoying. truly. it's a love story between two black young british people but it's far from a tiktok romance novel. it explores themes of race and masculinity and vulnerability and it's soft but also very real and it's wonderful. honestly if i had to only recommend one it would be this!

small things like these by claire keegan: very good and quietly hopeful story of a man in a little irish town at christmas. everybody was talking about this book last year and with good reason, it's great.

whereabouts by jhumpa lahiri: the story of a woman in the town she lives in and how it can change in a year. this is an introspective one but jhumpa lahiri is a genius so it reads very easily and it's so wonderfully written.

interpreter of maladies by jhumpa lahiri: short stories, mainly dealing with indian characters in the US. they feel absolutely universal while teaching something about culture and belonging. won the pulitzer in 1999.

how not to drown in a glass of water by angie cruz: a woman narrates the story of her life to her counselor who's trying to find her a job. it's funny and hopeful and memorable. the author is so great (she wrote another one called dominicana that is a masterpiece although is longer!)

kim jiyoung, born 1982 by cho nam-joo: the story of a new mum living in korea that explores the estrangement of being a woman and having to give up so much. it's definitely more serious but it's written very well and it doesn't feel heavy at all.

swimming in the dark by tomasz jedrowski: this one is incredible. it's the story of a polish university student who falls in love with another man in the 1980s in an obviously very repressive society. so he's in love but he wants protest and he can't ignore the struggles and the disparity around him. it's very political but also lyrical and tender.

someone who will love you in all your damaged glory by raphael bob-waksberg: okay this breaks 200 pages at 256 pages long. but it's so good. everybody would love this. it's by the creator of bojack horseman if that can be an incentive somehow. it's a collection of stories that are so unconventional and bizarre in the most incredible way. they are funny stories and sweet and absurd and sad. i really loved reading this book.

infinite country by patricia engel: the story of a colombian family dealing with deportation. it's from the pov of elena who is the eldest daughter. it's a beautiful book that deals with very real struggles and it does it beautifully.

classics

recitatif by toni morrison: very short story (about 20 pages) but so clever and so well written of course. it's the story of two women who have known each other since they were children. they lose touch and then they reconnect when they're older. one of them is white and one of them is black, but the author never tells you which is which. so it's a great story about race.

the cossacks by leo tolstoy: the story of a man who loses his fortune and retires to a cossack village. it's very russian... but it's very well written and definitely explores some of the themes that tolstoy will then explore in war and peace like the purpose of life and war and his love of nature.

white nights by fyodor dostoevsky: again very russian. but less than 100 pages long! it's the story of a young man living in st petersburg who one day meets a girl and they become fast friends. they both feel like outcasts, so together they feel like they can belong. it is actually great.

giovanni's room by james baldwin: lots of baldwin's books (both his fiction and non-fiction) are short ones actually. this one is the story of a man in paris who, while waiting for his girlfriend to get there, falls in love with a man. it's an incredible story dense with love and passion and shame and it is wonderful.

the old man and the sea by hemingway: old man tries to catch big fish after not being able to catch any fish for a long time. but also so much more than that and nobody made me read this in school so i only read it at 25 and it blew me away. everybody told me it would be so sad but i think it's actually hopeful and a little bit it is a story about community? and it tells you that there's people waiting for you to come back.

of mice and men by steinbeck: again i read it in my mid twenties and loved it. it's a gut punch. it's about two men clinging together as laborers in california. it deals with what it means to feel powerless in a tyrant world.

franny and zooey by salinger: one of the best books ever i think. franny and zooey are brother and sister and they are two young people experiencing existential doubts. it's a book about family and about growing into adults and about the alienation that comes with that. salinger knows how to write young people in a crisis so well and how to make it engaging and entertaining.

having compiled this list i now see that my tastes definitely are oriented in a certain way but i hope at least one of these can work for your friend. i tried to include all the shorter books that i have read and loved and i think that generally anyone could enjoy them, but you never know!

Though only a year or so has passed by, the time between you two has impacted your friendship greatly. Not only are you less dependent while Jungkook finally found the courage to ease his feelings for you—but you two continue to find the middle ground. Not giving up and continuing to be involved in each other's lives.

What were others expecting? That the whole friendship goes down the drain over a little romance? No. That’s not fair. There are a lot of layers to it. A lot of underlying feelings and forgotten memories still have to be talked about… But that’s okay.

That’s alright.

No one heals overnight.

Yet, given the way you look tonight… Maybe he just might.

It takes Jungkook by surprise.

Even if he knew this was coming, his mind has a difficult time processing this. Though he met with you days prior to the event, seeing you in the flesh… With your parents by your side is definitely a moment. It pinches his heart, remembering and wondering what your grandma would have said or felt if she was still alive to see this. To see how beautiful you grew up to be and how your heart, in the midst of the chaos, endured the hurt to make it to this moment.

This moment is where you are shining more than ever.

This moment is where you are still everything he has ever dreamed about.

This moment is where you are still his but not quite… Some things never change.

“You made it!” you rave, moving past your parents to greet him. You meet Jungkook halfway and he smiles as you pull him in for a hug.

“Of course,” Jungkook pulls away and nods in the direction of his parents and brother. They all walk in, formal as ever.

To be fair, everyone is dressed formally. The launch is a formal event and your parents invited all their connections. Including but not limited to; the Jeons, the Jungs, the Kims, and even the Mins. You aren’t too sure who's here yet, but you find it absolutely astonishing that Jungkook is. The fact that he came with his family and dressed for the part… It’s beyond you.

“I told you. They love you more than me.”

You laugh. “What?”

“I got an earful for not matching my suit brand with them,” he gasps dramatically. “They said this was really important since your parents are back and this—this is like your coming of age party or whatever. Are you planning on giving in and taking over your family business and prospects? I thought we were going to rebel against them.” Jungkook kids. You laugh even harder, hitting his shoulder and rolling your eyes.

“Mr. Jeon, how childish of you.”

“Only when I’m with you, Ms. ___,” he chides.

Before you can say any more, his parents swoop in and embrace you. They welcome you home and ask for your parents. You and Jungkook sigh, feeling like embarrassed two teenagers. In this, you take each other's hands as an extra courage boost. It’s like a safety net. You two guide them to your parents. Then, you introduce them to each other for the first time in years. Instantly, Jungkook and your parents hit it off.

“Such a shame these two are just friends,” Jungkook’s mother sighs. Your mother and his laugh, along with your father's grinning from ear to ear.

Your cheeks turn red and Jungkook shakes his head in utter frustration. He feels embarrassed too. We literally went over the do’s and don’ts to his family before coming. “Mom, please! Let’s not—”

“Friends or lovers, we’re thankful for Jungkook. He took care of her better than we ever did,” your father remarks warmly. Jungkook shyly smiles and squeezes your hand. You hold onto him tighter. “Thank you, son.”

Truly, your father meant it with his entire heart.

By the time everyone else arrives, you’re three drinks in and joined at the hip by Jungkook. It’s all friendly and he doesn’t mind.

He missed you.

He missed this.

Hoseok trails behind you two, being an extension of your fun. Nam Joon is somewhere else, talking to the adults about his career and what the future holds for it. Taehyung and Jimin are fooling around, taking pictures, and hitting on whoever.

Actually, your encounter with Jimin and Taehyung went pretty smoothly. Considering that those two specifically greeted you extremely enthusiastically. You wonder why, but can only think as far as them sucking up to you for the incident that happened a year ago.

It’s whatever.

You have already forgiven them and honestly? If it wasn’t for them, you wouldn’t be here today. You wouldn’t have cried so much and let your guard down to your parents. You would not have done so much family therapy and self-reflection. Even if it felt a little wicked and unfair on your end, it would not have pushed you to be the person you are now. No, you would not have healed the way you have without them.

Perhaps, it’s true what they say.. You can’t heal what you won’t touch.

“Long time no see,” Jimin greets you with a kiss on the cheek. Taehyung follows in with a bear hug and sways you back and forth.

“We still owe you dinner,” Taehyung reminds you. Your mouth drops in remembrance followed by a gasp. “When are you free?”

“Are you asking me out?”

It’s a joke.

“Depends...” Taehyung thinks for a moment, side-eying Jimin. Jimin smirks and shakes his head playfully. You’re left a little confused.

“On what?”

“Depends on how badly we want to die at his hands.”

That was not a joke.

Your smile drops and the two pause. It’s the first time tonight anyone has addressed you and Jin. Also, what did they mean by this? You aren’t sure if you feel overwhelmed or relieved.

“Anyways... Remember when we went clubbing and I got a boner from how good you looked?”

You and Jungkook are beginning to get bored. Perhaps it’s an old habit, but you two are pretty good at sneaking away from family events. Tonight, for obvious reasons, you could not do such a thing.

Therefore, you two were stuck.

Stuck with—

“So... What are your plans?”

Hoseok has done nothing but gossip all night. Even if he was the one to pick you up from the airport and even spent prior days with you; he could not stop talking. This man was beyond happy for you and your year of growth. No, you weren’t perfect, but you were better. All of his talks were about catching you up with your social circles and his career. Along with talking about the places you’ve travelled and discussing your realizations, Hoseok hasn’t asked this one.

“School, I guess.. Work under my parents, get to know the business—”

“Blah, blah, blah,” he dismisses. Hoseok grabs onto your shoulders and turns you. From across the venue, you see him. You really see him. Then, you see her. She trails behind him and snakes her hand to hold onto his. She’s smiling and waving at familiar people while Jin stays by her side. His gaze does not leave you.

Leaning in, Hosoek tries again. “So... What are your plans?”

You watch in pure jealousy.

There’s no way you could hide it and you don’t want to either. What would be the point if you did?

Jungkook catches this and clears his throat. You ignore him.

You watch as Ari whispers something to Jin’s ear before leaving his side. You watch as she walks over to people you don’t know and greet them. She looks beautiful. She’s older than you, definitely, but her beauty hasn’t aged.

You wonder if that’s Jin’s type. He is older than you considering you’re the same age as Jungkook. You wonder if Jin is into really independent women who only want sex... Were you just the young naïve girl that asked for too much? Is that why he gave up so easily? Is that why he didn’t try to talk to you back at that café?

Is it too late?

It can’t be.

You and Jin are unfinished.

“I don’t know,” you answer Hoseok. You feel chills travel down your body as Jin picks up his feet and begins to walk towards you.

“A year later and you still don’t know?” Hoseok scoffs. “I told you.. I hate liars.”

He’s right.

You do know.

You want to be with Jin.

You’ve spent a year clearing your foggy thoughts. You’ve spent so much time healing and learning about yourself... All the while so inevitably in love with him. Of course you know. How could you not?

Your eyes meet Jin.

His lips curve into a small smile as he lifts his hand to wave to you. You huff and turn the other cheek, whispering to Hoseok.

“Tell me.. Why is she here?”

Hoseok squints before nodding in confirmation. “Ari?”

You nod, turning to Jungkook.

“Why is she here?” Your question repeats, except this time with a tone of anxiousness. He knows and remembers the past... But he knows and recognizes your strength now. He wouldn’t have allowed for this to happen if he didn’t believe in you.

“Bhie, your parents invited her family. They’re all abroad right now so she’s representing their company tonight.”

“How’d you know that—”

Hoseok interrupts. “Hello? She’s literally the heiress to major transport companies. Of course she’d be here at the launch.”

“It’s Valentines day though. Shouldn’t she be out with a hot date?” you pry, trying not to sound too desperate But who cares! This is Hoseok. If anything, this is who you’re most compelled to be honest to.. Well, aside from Yoongi and Jungkook. Those two will forever be bonded with you.

“Then that just means Jin is her hot date—ouch!” Hoseok complains after you elbow him in the chest.

You try again with Jungkook. “Can you kick her out?”

Hoseok sends you a glare, finding it unbelievable how you’re being so mean to him. “You’re so evil tonight.”

You shrug. “It’s Valentines day and I’m watching him be with someone else. If that isn’t a villain origin story, I don’t know what is!”

“You like him that much, huh?” Jungkook asks softly. “You’re acting pretty jealous...”

“No, I’m not! Are you?”

Defending yourself is... Not a good look on you right now. Why are you defending yourself? Who cares if you’re jealous?!

“Kind of.”

“What?”

The three of you exchange looks.

“Oof,” Jungkook stumbles back, pretending to be hit on the heart. He tries to move past the moment. “Your comeback hurt… Not!”

You roll your eyes and playfully hit him. He catches your wrists and laughs. The feeling begins. You sulk, pout, and glare at him. “So immature... Ah, I knew this would be fun.”

“That’s the literal love of my life with someone else and you think this is fun—”

Your eyes widen at your words. Jungkook’s smile twitches before he suddenly stumbles back again, letting go of your wrist. He acts out as if he has chest pain, crouching and groaning. As you begin to feel concerned, he stands perfectly straight and sticks his tongue out. “I thought I was the love of your life...”

“This again,” Hoseok whines before hitting the back of Jungkook’s head. Jungkook takes the hit and smirks.

It’s all playful, of course… But you aren’t sure when he’s being sarcastic or sensitive. You fear of overstepping, but again… It is what it is. You’re meant to learn from one another after all.

“Sorry, Jungkook. I didn’t mean—”

“Wah, wah, wah,” Jungkook dismisses, redirecting your attention to Jin. “Go away. The love of your life is here.”

Your heart beat fastens as Jin approaches you. Jungkook pushes you forward and you hesitate. From the corner of your eye, you see Hoseok about to walk away. Even if privacy is an implied need for you and Jin, this is too early! Out of instinct, you grab onto Hoseok’s blazer collar and tug him to stay. He pretends to struggle and choke, ultimately being dramatic.

You weren’t tugging on him that hard.

It works, though. Hoseok stays and as he’s catching his breath, Jin stands in front of you.

His hair is trimmed. It’s still the length you like, the one you met him with, but it’s shorter at the front. It’s nice. You can see his face clearly. He’s wearing a black slim fit button up with nice slacks. You’re used to him dressed up as most of his work required him to be formal... But he looks different tonight.

Good.

Great.

He is as handsome as ever.

You feel your heart tighten, your pulse quicken, and your eyes... They water a little. You haven’t seen him in so long. That interaction in Australia was not enough.

It was nothing compared to now.

Jin tilts his head and offers his pouty smile at you. Your heart melts, slightly beginning to panic.

“Hey.”

“Hi.”

“... Did I see that right? Were you choking—”

“I.. Uh—y-yes.”

The corner of his lips twitch, trying not to break into a smile. You’re honest. You’ve always had an unprovoked side but he’s taken aback at how you are right now. “... Why?”

You can’t answer him.

You consider redirecting the conversation but nothing comes out of your mouth. It’s like you’re tongue tied but even that is an understatement. You aren’t sure why.. But maybe it’s out of pettiness. Maybe it’s out of shock. Maybe it’s out of nervousness.

Was it wrong for you to assume that he would come in here alone? That he would... Oh, you don’t know... Come with flowers and have a whole confession ready for you? To which, you’d accept and offer your own confession? It just seems... Like things are not unfolding how you pictured they would.

“Jin,” Jungkook reaches to shake hands. Just as Jin is about to speak, Jungkook tugs him close. So close that Jin ends up bumping into you. Hoseok laughs and excuses himself. “And my jobs done. See ya.”

Jungkook snickers at his mess and childishly salutes you two. Before he can get away with it, you catch his arm and hold onto it. You leave Jin standing.

“D-don’t go,” you urge.

Jungkook glances at Jin who sighs and looks at you fondly. As you tighten your grip on Jungkook, he can’t help but feel like he suddenly traveled back in time. This was just like before.

It felt weird to be in the same moment but as different people.

“I’m not leaving, woman. You’re so dramatic sometimes—”

“No, I’m not!”

“I’m just going to join the others while you two talk. Aren’t you in love with him or something?” Jungkook scolds you, acting annoyed.

Without noticing, he slips his hand under yours and frees his arm. You hold on to the tips of his fingers and give him a pitiful look. As you open your mouth to say something, he shakes his head at you. You lower your head, hating that he has to be the strong one.

“Don’t do that,” he begs, taking his hand entirely away from you. Truth be told, it reminds him of when you played with his hair that night and he begged the same thing.

It stings.

“___, it’s my turn to walk away from you. You have to let me have this.” Jungkook lets out a hearty chuckle to lighten the mood. His tone was kind. It didn’t sound too sad or petty. It was calm as his words were chaos itself. See, even if his eyes were beginning to tear up and his heart is racing like never before, he knew what to do.

He knew what to say.

“My you,” he calls for you. You look up at him, gaze soft and as angelic as ever. “I love you one.”

You gulp, feeling like he was saying goodbye. He wasn’t, but it just felt like he was. He waits no longer. Jungkook pulls you in for a tight hug and before he lets go, you say it.

“I love you two.”

Once Jungkook releases you, you and him share a look. He mouths out “good luck, bhie,” as he walks away. As he joins Hoseok, from the corner of his eyes, he watches as you and Jin exchange a few words before walking side by side and disappearing into the crowd of guests.

Jungkook has a hard time understanding what he feels. To him, it’s all wrapped up with different levels and complexities. There’s so much that goes into the thought of you. He is eternally grateful that your friendship with him was spared. After everything, he is so grateful to still be with you.

At the end of the day, this is all he will be.

He will always be the best friend that has to step back and watch you be with who you love. Your parents, Jin...

It was him once. It was him before. He’ll always know in his heart; it was once him.

That’s good enough.

He can’t change how he loved you back then and how he loves you now.. What he can change and what he holds himself most accountable for is how he lets you go, but holds onto the beauty of who you are.

He hopes to let go of the heartache.

He hopes that the losses and disappointments in his journey towards you continue to just be that... That these losses and disappointments can not define the man he is or is to be. He hopes to accept and understand that he can not mend everything.

Sometimes, life has loose threads and dead ends. Sometimes, the only closure is the one that comes from yourself.

He deserves so much love and grace life has to offer. Putting you on a pedestal and believing you were his entire life... It was not fair for either one of you. He knows better now. He knows he deserves to be loved better. To be loved truer and deeper.

He deserves to be chosen. He deserves to choose his own heart over you.

Most of all, he hopes to let go of what isn’t for him... Truth be told, he does not deserve to stay in places where his world keeps falling apart. See, as Jungkook chased love—he chased after you. It only made sense to know that if love was you; it would be the garden and he was the butterfly. Where the air was softer, the sky was bluer, and the flowers bloomed prettier—he’d remain a fragment of spring. If love was you, it would be the feeling of finally being set free. To put it simply, from his childhood, love has always been you. Which brings us back to this:

The theory.

The one about how in this greedy world, there lies a theory that we only love once. Everything and every one after our first love is us chasing after what we once had. Jungkook used to count himself as an exception to this theory until his first love—his story with you—reached its end.

Knowing the agonizing heartache, the longing nights, and the mundane days without you—would Jin do it again?

If it meant seeing you again, across the room with your parents by your side.. Happy and as radiant as ever; yes.

He would.

You two stand outside the venue. You didn’t bring out your coat and the dress you’re wearing, though long, is pretty thin. It’s February for crying out loud!

Jin notices you shiver and instantly regrets bringing you outside. To be fair, there wouldn’t be any available rooms for you two to talk without others listening in. Outside is the best option. He’ll take responsibility. Jin shrugs off his blazer and puts it over your shoulders. You look up at him and his kind eyes warm your heart.

After thanking him, you two stand in front of one another in silence. You aren’t sure where to start or how to even navigate through this conversation. Sure, you’re expecting it to be awkward but still... The silence was killing you.

“So… You’re here with Ari?”

You aren’t sure why you can’t help but ask. You’ve worked on being more patient but… Something inside you snapped the moment the two walked in together. At your family’s event? Hand in hand? Fully aware that this was your homecoming?

“You’re here with Jungkook so…”

Playing it back in your head, you know where he’s coming from. The last part of your interaction with Jungkook is a valid ground for Jin to feel uncomfortable.

“It’s not like that,” you defend. Is he jealous? Is he as jealous as you? You don’t know. “I was just nervous. I asked him to stay out of comfort but I don’t even think I wanted him to.”

“It’s not like that for me either,” Jin confesses. “Ari’s pregnant.”

Your mouth drops.

How could you be so stupid? A year has passed! Their little love child is probably why he didn’t bother talking to you then!

That’s probably why Jungkook and Hoseok refused to kick her out for you… But it’s a little weird. If Ari was pregnant with Jin’s child, why didn’t Hoseok or Jungkook say anything to you? A little warning would have been nice.

You feel so betrayed.

Jin can’t help but find your panicking eyes amusing. He knows you must be running through all the scenarios in your head.

Shoving his hands into his pockets, he leans his body forward and says, “it’s not mine. The guy left her and she decided to keep the baby... After that, she reached out to me and apologized about everything. We’re friends.. Actually, acquaintances is a more appropriate term... I just accompanied her tonight. It was my last favour I owed her for my end of a deal.”

“A business deal?”

Jin smirks. “Yeah. A business deal.”

“What was the deal?”

“Does it matter?”

“Maybe.”

He huffs at your quick wit and thinks you haven’t changed a bit. Still as cute as ever. Still the ___ that makes his heart race.

“You’re obviously jealous but you look good,” he teases you. In response, you shoot him a glare. “You always look good but... You look good like you’re glowing. Like you’re happy? You look—”

“Good?” you suggest, laughing after.

He chuckles and gives up. He’s trying too hard. He should just tone it down a bit or just get right into it. He decides on the ladder.

“You were really pretty in Australia too.”

A beat.

“I saw you,” Jin admits.

“I know. I saw you too.”

The world stops.

You two stand in awe. Confused but also a little relieved for some reason. You want to ask him so many questions but find yourself only asking one.

“Why didn’t you say anything to me?”

It’s the question that kept you up for nights. You’ve replayed the moment over and over in your head, trying to figure out how else the encounter could have gone. This is your chance for the answer. This is your chance for closure.

“I would’ve said too much.”

“... Well, what would you have said? Even if it’s too much, it would’ve been nice to talk to you.”

Jin blinks. “Even if I have too much to say?”

“Try me,” you encourage him. “What is it, Jin? Is there something you’d like to tell me? What? Did you miss me—”

Jin takes a step towards you and you stand still. You take in his scent—something you missed. Something that makes you finally feel at home. He reaches for you and you give him your hand.

He holds it tight and takes a deep breath in.

You hold yours.

“I miss you.”

You huff, feeling a little disappointed. “That’s it? That’s all you would’ve said?”

“Yes,” he nods. “Because that was then and this is now. Now, this is what I have to say..”

Your breath hitches when he pulls you closer. Your faces are inches from each other and your feel your body stiffen. You haven’t been this nervous since your first hook up with him. It’s strange but also so familiar.

“I have done so much in my life and yet I feel empty. So far, I’ve spent it living for my parents, the expectations of others, and finally—when I started to live for myself, I found myself enjoying life with you. In the last year without you, I’ve met countless people who have come and left. All I felt indifferent to. All made me feel empty simply because no one compares to you. No one comes close and I think... I think I’ve always known that. I always knew it was you. In every heartache and moment of happiness; I wanted you. It’s like... Whatever and whoever stood in the way of you and I didn’t matter. Of course, Jungkook mattered and work—that’s not the point. The point is, my feelings flood in like never before when I’m with you... Jin pauses.

“... And I saw you happy, ___. It was the first time I’ve ever seen you like that. You were glowing and you were so filled with joy.. I couldn’t do it. I couldn’t walk over there and ruin that. I even got a little angry because I suddenly remembered all the events that led up to you leaving. How you hid this, how you were leading Jungkook and I on, how you—how everything was just a mess. I remembered why you left and if I walked over, talked to you, and begged the way I planned to... It would hurt my pride too much.”

“Jin—”

“___, fuck my pride.”

You remember it all.

The heated kiss, the scrambling to his car, the touchy drive to his place, and even the the way that he felt against your body as you two made your way to his bedroom.

It happened so fast.

Faster than you two would have liked it to happen, but it doesn’t matter now.

“Good morning,” he laughs as you tighten your hug.

Kissing his back, you rest your cheek against it. “Cooking for Jungkook?”

“Ha ha,” Jin rolls his eyes. He turns off the stove and places the last pancake on the stack beside him. He turns, causing you to step back and let go. For a moment, he takes his time and looks at you.

Even in the morning, you’re perfect as ever.

“No one’s been home for months. We usually hang out at your apartment.”

You connect the dots. “Oh! Is that why there’s no towel in the washroom?”

JIn doesn’t answer you. Instead, he lifts you up by the waist and sits you on the count. You open your legs as he fits himself in between them. He then places his hands on either sides of your legs, leaning in for a kiss.

You kiss him sweetly.

“We didn’t really get to talking.. I’m sorry if you wanted to slow down and figure out what the hell we’re doing before we—”

“It’s fine,” you snicker. “I wanted you. I wanted it just as bad as you. I have no regrets.”

“Good.” Jin feels a little more confident. “... Because I’m in this for real. Whatever you want, I want. Whatever you are, I am. A friend, a boyfriend, a husband—”

“Woah—”

“Let’s begin again.”

Jin chases your eyes, looking deeply and wishing for you to see right through him. He hopes you see it. He hopes you feel it.

He is utterly and completely in love with you.

“I have a lot of things I need to fix about myself,” you begin. “I want to be with you. I think you deserve the best and I—”

“Just because you’re healing doesn’t mean you’re not worthy of love,” Jin testifies. “I want you to know that. I’ll respect whatever you decide you want us to be because if you could see yourself the way I see you... You’d be in love too.”

You blink.

“You’re in love with me?”

He rolls his eyes at your realization. “Are you serious? After all that?”

You shrug, feeling a little dumb. “Like... I know but I... I don’t know?”

Jin cups your face, closing in whatever space was left between you two. His gaze softens as you look into his eyes. It’s not like you feel shy, but it hits you that he’s looking at you... Really looking at you.

He looks at you like he loves you.

“I’ll give you what you want. The soft life with the dreamy kitchen and midnight slow dances with the refrigerator light. The sunrises and sunsets. The life we talked about and the life we didn’t. What you say goes, ___. What do you want?”

It feels ironic.

The last time he asked you this, he was on the edge of heartbreak. Both of you were. The last time he asked you this, it broke your heat. Now, it’s what mends it.

That’s the funny thing about choosing someone. If the theory of your first love being your only love exists—then this one surely does too.

In this greedy world lies the theory that you choose your person because they represent the unfinished part of your childhood. That’s why, for the most part, you two are opposites. That’s why love and the bond between you two is more vulnerable and raw. That’s why it’s more authentic.

And that’s just it. You love Jin like he’s your true love. You love Jin like he’s your other half. You love Jin like you were never broken.

“I love you,” you tell him clearly. Without hesitation or a heavy heart, you add; “I want to be with you. I choose you. I’ve always chosen you. I’m sorry I took this long and we had to come this far—but I’m here now. I’ve changed and really believe I can do better for us if you give me another chance! I’ll prove it—”

And with that, Jin’s heart finds rest. It collapses and becomes entirely yours. His wish came true. All along, his star was you.

“You’re here now. You made your choice. You don’t need to prove anything. You don’t need to change for me.”

You fall in love all over again as he tucks your hair behind your ear and says, “___, I love as you are.”

Gosh do I have a type and they're all Old Men and Tragic Ladies my beloved. Let's go!! 1. Varric Tethras (Dragon Age 2): he shot right through my heart with that crossbow THE LITERAL SECOND he came on screen and I've been cursing Bioware ever since. He is a nonromanceable short king and I have never wanted anyone more thx. 2. Nakmor Drack (Mass Effect Andromeda): the Tempest Crew is so freaking charming, and while I love my jelly fish cat aliens the Angara, my favorite character is absolutely this old cantakerous grandpa Krogan. Whom, much like Wrex, I wish I could romance. (p.s. there is a TEASE of a flirt option and u can imagine how little that helped my case) 3. Spock (literally every Star Trek iteration): He is my Everything. Nemoy, Quinto, and Peck all bring something unique to the character's portrayal. I love him in every universe and I can never get enough of this EMOTIONALLY COMPROMISED NERD.

4. Alicent Hightower (House of the Dragon): one half of my divorced lesbinems and I feel so much for her and the tragedy/complexity of both her character and the heartwrenching slow decay of her r/s with Rhaenyra. I cannot wait for S2. 5. Aerith Gainsborough (Final Fantasy VII): ooooough, beautiful, tragic, kind, funny, cool flower seller of my life. Remake!Aerith particularly stole my heart along with the show. There is this sad, beguiling mystery about her that draws you in, and she is so cheerful in spite of it all. I can't wait for Rebirth but also I am terrified lol. 6. Yennefer of Vengerberg (The Witcher): "How ravishing she is, he thought. Everything about her is ravishing. And menacing. Those colours of hers; that contrast of black and white. Beauty and menace. Her raven-black, natural curls. Her cheekbones, pronounced, emphasising a wrinkle, which her smile – if she deigned to smile – created beside her mouth, wonderfully narrow and pale beneath her lipstick…" I mean. C'mon. That is MY WIFE etc, copy paste rj's exact blurb. Anya Chalotra is the perfect Yen. She is everything and deserves the world and I will glady let her burn it all down and murder me if she wants to. 7. Zero (Final Fantasy XIV): [Endwalker patch spoilers!] who doesn't love an autistic badass goth half-human half-voidsent who has lived as a monster for so long she forgot her own identity and is learning how to be human again and finding her humanity via the power of friendship and delicious food, like. I needed more of her and I miss her already!!!

8. Kim Wexler (Better Call Saul): omg so hard to pick just one from this show (ilu nacho), but Kim Wexler SUCKER PUNCHES U IN THE THROAT with her awesomeness. She is this extremely competent, understated cool, calculating yet caring and earnest character who compliments Jimmy so well and whose nuances her amazing actress Rhea Seehorn manages to convey so masterfully. She is also tragic af, but hello it's Breaking Bad prequel lol. On that note... 9. Kim Kitsuragi (Disco Elysium): DOUBLE KIM WHAMMY!!! They're so alike it's not even funny. I'd say Kim has the stronger moral center between the two, but I love them for many of the same reasons. He is also extremely competent, understated cool, with a side of being totally game for Harry's antics once he warms up to him (my Harry build was 'himbo' so he did a lot of dumb shit but he was nice). 10. Irving Bailiff (Severance): firstable, if you haven't seen Severance yet, please do yourself the favor and don't let me spoil this for u!! Irving Bailiff is an Experience. He is a stickler for the rules and very much a stick in the mud compared to his colleagues, but his true self leaks into this version of himself slowly at first, then in surprising bursts of rebellion that become clear at the end when it is shown that his Outtie/true self is actively trying to bring Lumon down like a TOTAL FUCKING BADASS in the most delightful reveal. Also he has a whirlwind romance with another old man played by Christopher Walken.

Favorite content to watch: uhhh.. hm. depends on my mood. I usually gravitate towards let's plays or documentaries on a whole variety of topics? speedrunning, electronics, abandoned places, and critiques on a wide variety of media are some of my go-tos for documentary/commentary-style content. there's a lot more tho that I can't think of off the top of my head. I just like listening to people discuss random stuff haha.

Favorite games: Oooh, quite a few. Minecraft, Super Mario Sunshine, Luigi's Mansion, Professor Layton, Ace Attorney, Hitman (World of Assassination), and recently Hatsune Miku: Project Diva Mega Mix are some that immediately come to mind. There are so many more games I could add but I gotta keep this kinda simple xD

Favorite colors: I love all colors for various reasons but any shade of purple is my absolute fave <3

Favorite animal: CATS!!! though I'm sure that's pretty obvious, haha xD I can't help but relate to them so much lol

Favorite food: mmmm. maybe my mom's beef and potato hash? it's the ultimate comfort food to me and she doesn't make it often, but it always Hits Just Right whenever I do get to have it.

Sweet, spicy, or savory: savory all the way, baby. don't mind a bit of spice alongside the savory sometimes but it depends on what it is.

Current obsession: my own OCs (and some friends' OCs as well). I literally talk about them all the time and I could say I'm sorry but I'm really not. xD if we're talking media in general tho? I guess the Hatsune Miku game I mentioned earlier counts, lol

Last book I read: oof. I can't even remember. for published books, I want to say it was Mayday at Two Thousand Five Hundred by Frank E. Peretti? but if not, then it was probably my friend's original story draft. I hardly ever read anymore, honestly. I just write what I want to read instead.

Last thing I googled: don't use google, per se. but I think the last thing I searched online was the lyrics to King by Kanaria because I want to learn how to sing along lol

3 ships: lol I don't do ships so I don't have much to put here xD I guess I kinda "shipped" some characters when I was younger (like Mario and Peach or whatever), but not? to an extreme degree or anything? was never my focus. still isn't. Honorable mention does go out to Kim Possible and Ron Stoppable, though. I felt their relationship was handled really well, even though I typically really don't like romance in kids' media at all.

My rankings/reviews of all the k dramas I have seen so far (up to 26 now). My top 5 has been cracked by 2 shows! Netflix k-dramas are just killing it. I would recommend any show I gave a C grade or higher. I bolded the 5 new dramas I’ve added.

*= reserving the right to change ranking after season 2.

1) Hometown Cha Cha Cha: An absolute masterpiece. It’s a heartwarming fish out of water story about a big city girl who finds herself in the quirkiest little seaside town. I wanted to stay in Gongjin forever. Grade: A+(Netflix)

2)*Extraordinary Attorney Woo (S1): The most delightful show ever. Never have I ever rooted for a lead harder. She is the most endearing lead you will ever find. And the male lead is THE standard by which all men will forever be judged. Grade: A+(Netflix)

3)Business Proposal: Bumped this up again cause it’s the show I have the urge to rewatch the most. I can’t stop thinking about it. It’s got every trope you can think of and it does them all to perfection. Plus it’s hilarious. Grade: A (Netflix)

4)*Alchemy of Souls (S1): Episodes 1-19 were the perfect blend of fantasy, adventure, mystery, comedy, and romance. With so many characters who are so lovable. Episode 20 will destroy you. Counting the seconds till season 2. Grade: A (Netflix)

5)Her Private Life: Super funny and charming. The romantic leads have incredible chemistry. The premise is so good! Might be the one of the most rewatchable kdramas. Grade: A (Netflix)

6)Rookie Historian Goo Hae Ryung: Great strong female lead. Very good messages. Couldn’t stop watching. The most adorable prince I’ve ever seen 💜Cha Eunwoo💜 Grade: A (Netflix)

7)Sh**ting Stars: Probable the biggest turnaround of any show I’ve seen (The “Africa” part was so problematic). However it turned out to be one of the funniest and swooniest KDramas out there. There are 5 couples and you will cheer for all of them. Grade: A- (Viki)

8)Strong Woman Do Bong Soon: The main couple is absolutely everything! Just fast forward through pretty much every side plot (they are not important) and you’ll love it. Grade: A- (Viki)

9)So I Married the Anti-Fan: It’s campy, fluffy, goodness, with a fierce female lead and a K-pop star enemy/love interest. Fastest binge of my life. Grade: A- (Viki)

10)Start-Up: Exceptional acting, compelling storylines, intriguing plot twists, great cinematography, intense love triangle. It’s just all around high quality. Grade: B+ (Netflix)

11)Run On: Cute, fun, silly and pretty light. I especially loved the supporting cast. Strange storyline but it was a fun easy ride. Grade: B+ (Netflix)

14)Shopping King Louie: Adorable! Luis is too cute. I love it how he bops along like a penguin and his cute little screams at bugs. And Bok Sil is the warmest character, you just have to root for her. So many light fluffy feels for this show but it does drag a bit in the second half. Grade B (Viki)

15)Fight For My Way: Such lovable leads. Love the fierce female lead and adorable himbo male lead. It’s like a coming of age story but for 30 year olds. Storyline was ok. Second couple was skippable. Grade: B (Viki)

16)What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim: More PSJ is always a good thing. This drama did all the tropes in ways that didn’t always feel fresh, but it was very romantic and hilarious. A true classic. Grade: B (Viki)

17)Touch Your Heart: If you can just stick it out through the first few very shaky episodes, you will enjoy this adorable, fluffy, series. Grade: B- (Netflix)

20)Suspicious Partner: Great story, great characters, attractive actors, beautiful romance, interesting plot, sometimes funny, sometimes suspenseful, but with 40 episodes, the plot was dragged so far out that it became hard to get through. Grade C+ (Viki)

21)Crash Landing On You: The first half is GREAT but the second half is way too melodramatic for my taste. It’s a very interesting storyline, the main couple has insane chemistry, and there are very lovable side characters. Grade: C+ (Netflix)

22)My Love From the Star: The main relationship is incredibly intense. I just wanted to find out what happened to them so I ended up fast forwarding through everything else. The age difference in the flashbacks creeped me out. Grade D+ (Viki)

25)Goblin: The age gap is too disturbing for me, like call the police disturbing. However, the Grim Reaper who is one of the most adorable characters I’ve ever seen. Grade: D- (Viki)

26)Extra-Ordinary You: I have never felt so betrayed by a second half of a series as I did in this one. All of the character development that it seemed to be leading to was replaced by a pretty sickening codependent relationship. Grade: D- (Viki).

In the past, whenever something had bothered you, the first person you ran to was Jungkook. Low grades, fights with your parents, boy drama— as your best friend and number one confidant, Jungkook was always your first choice. He was always willing to lend you a shoulder to cry on, even if that meant staining his white t-shirts with streaks of your mascara. He was always ready to go beat up a mean boy who had hurt your feelings during lunch, even if he’d miss his favorite special. And he was always down for some good old fashion i hate my parents ranting, even if he adored your parents. He was a great listener, an even better best friend, and had rightfully won you over from a very young age.

That being said, how were you supposed to talk to Jungkook about something that bothered you when that something was him?

You could easily tell any of your numerous girl friends, those of which would probably understand your predicament better than Jungkook or any man ever could. But after years of vehemently denying any notion of a romantic relationship between the two of you, you get the feeling your call for help will be met with more unimpressed glares than actual assistance. Besides, as much as you bring up Jungkook, none of them really know Jungkook to truly offer you any worthwhile advice.

Your next option: Kim Taehyung. Now, Kim Taehyung held a similar background as Jungkook (translation: he also went to the same high school as you). He knows both you and Jungkook—frankly, more than you’d like him to—so he would be able to dissect the issue easily and offer trustworthy advice. The problem with Kim Taehyung, however, is that aside from knowing you at your embarrassingly dorky teenage prime, he doesn’t know how to keep a secret. Anything he knows, Jungkook knows. So if you were to, hypothetically, ask Taehyung for advice on Jungkook, well. Chances are, you’d probably get a rather confused text from Jungkook two minutes later.

Which leaves you with one option— Park Jimin. There’s a reason Park Jimin isn’t your first option, and that reason presents itself now as you glare at him from across the empty room. For as long as you’ve been in university, Jimin has always lingered around the student council meetings, giving everyone he sees the prettiest, meanest stink-eye. You suspect it’s because he waits around for Min Yoongi, your Vice President (which isn’t an issue; Jungkook also frequents student council meetings while waiting for you), and doesn’t really care for anyone else. Your problem with Jimin doesn’t lie there but rather with the fact he’s adamant on taking up space and not lending so much as a finger to help.

Today he is sitting with his feet on the table, dirty volleyball bag tossed on the floor. He’s watched you for the last fifteen minutes wrestle with the broken copy machine and hasn’t said a word since. He pretends he doesn’t see you struggling, because if he does, he’d be obligated to help you.

To summarize, Park Jimin may be the fastest libero your university’s volleyball team has seen in years, but he’s a good-for-nothing bum everywhere else.

And despite all that, he’s your best choice. There’s no one quite as blunt and honest as Park Jimin. There’s no one in this world who truly doesn’t care enough about anyone’s problems to gossip about them as Park Jimin. You plop down beside him, rumpled papers in hand. Without warning, you jump straight into it. “Jungkook is going to take my virginity,” you announce, like it’s the most casual thing in the world. If any of your fellow student council members heard you, you’re certain you’d shrivel up and die.

Jimin hums. “That’s nice.” His eyes don’t leave his phone, thumb hovering over his screen. It’s a testament to how much he truly does not care. His extended silence plants a seed of doubt in you— was this the right person to tell? you begin to worry. But after a beat, Jimin’s thumb taps against his screen and he says, “Jungkook is a virgin.”

You clench your jaw. “I know.”

The thing about Jimin is, with the right wording, you can get him interested in something. Not interested enough to genuinely care, but interested enough to at least listen and offer his own piece of straightforward advice. His thumb comes to a standstill over his phone, eyes momentarily going blank. It’s a minute gesture, one that’s taken you four years of paying attention to catch. Just as quickly as it appears, it’s gone. “Really,” Jimin sighs, back to, you now realize, playing CandyCrush on his phone. “You’re gonna let a virgin take your virginity.”

Not a question, but you nod anyway. “Yup.”

There’s sweat building on the back of your neck, nerves at an all time high, but you’re trying to play it off. Just a little bit more and you know you’ll have caught him. Beside you, Jimin’s jaw twitches.

Finally, after what seems like an eternity of trying to act calm, Jimin clicks his phone off and turns to you. He’s as intimidating as ever, ash blonde hair pushed back today to reveal his forehead and dark eyes. “You’ve known Jungkook was a virgin this whole time?” he asks, has this calculating look in his eyes that makes you feel like you’re being questioned by an officer of the law and not the shortest person on the volleyball team.

With a practiced air of nonchalance, you shrug. “I have,” you confess, and it’s the truth.

While you may have been initially fooled that night two years ago, you weren’t that oblivious. Oh, you knew clear as day that Jeon Jungkook was still a virgin, just as well as you knew that he religiously washed his sheets every weekend or that he had a specific color coded system for his underwear drawer. Jungkook was a fool to try and lie to you, not only because you had found out, but because you had found out that very next morning.

It had been subtle. The night at the party, you had watched on with a throbbing heartache as some pretty girl led Jungkook up a set of stairs, had barely fought off a wave of emotion when he returned twenty minutes later, his hair a rumpled mess. “Did you… ?” you had mumbled, pressed closely against him by the back door. Your eyes had been glassy, from your emotions and from the drunken stupor you had gotten yourself into while he was away, wondering what he was doing. A sense of jealousy you would never admit to had curled around your heart. His hand had landed on your hip then. He smelled like flowers and vanilla, a smell unlike his own. Your heart clenched, hand mindlessly reaching up to cup his jaw, so drunk and heartbroken, you couldn’t stop yourself from trailing your fingers along his pretty cheekbones.

Jungkook had graced you with a simple nod, and then, “do you wanna leave now?”

You’d left, stumbling down Greek road on your way back to his dorm. Jungkook had held your hand the whole way, tucked you into his twin bed, and then promptly knocked out on the floor between his and Taehyung’s beds. The latter was nowhere to be found, wouldn’t appear until the next morning when he’d accidentally step on Jungkook’s ankle and wake both of you up.

Jungkook had yelped, and your eyes had fluttered open. You remember debating rolling over, checking on him like you wanted to, but Taehyung was already there doing just that. So you had laid still instead, listened as the two boys clattered around the room. They chatted mindlessly, about the party and tomorrow’s practice. Taehyung had been bragging about some girl he’d slept with last night. “What about you?” he had asked, and your breath caught in your throat. “Did you and…”—a pause, the distinct ruffle of fabric—“finally?”

“What— no,” Jungkook had said, and you felt the bed dip as he sat down on the edge beside you.

Taehyung pushed on with a snort. “Well, did you get lucky at all?”

Jungkook groaned, placed one warm hand on your back soothingly. You tried your best to level out your breathing, relaxed your facial expression as you clung to the sound of his voice. “Just a handjob. Some girl I didn’t even know. Does that count?” You could hear your heartbeat in your ears, felt it beneath your fingertips when you fisted the sheets.

And that curt admission sat in the back of your mind everyday for two years.

You turn to Jimin. “I’ve known Jungkook was a virgin since he first tried to tell me he wasn’t,” you tell him, arms crossed over your chest. “I’m pretty sure everyone knows.”

Jimin lets out a low whistle. “You’re smarter than I thought,” he grins, this conniving little smile that is a genuine cause for concern. “So you’re letting him think you don’t know?” You nod. Jimin’s smile grows. “My, my. If I had known you were this evil, maybe we would’ve hung out more.”

You roll your eyes. “I’m not evil,” you insist, flicking him on the nose. Jimin huffs indignantly. “I think what he’s doing is sweet…” you confess, feel your entire body heat up as you recall that wide-eyed look Jungkook had given you just yesterday afternoon, your kiss print fresh on his cheek. “And, well,” you look down at your shoes. “I used to dream about him being my first.”

Jimin groans. “You two make me sick.”

Yeah I read it last summer!

Well, I know its still currently updating but the last thing I read was (SPOILER FOR TRASH OF THE COUNT'S FAMILY)

when they started talking about OG Cale's mom and i haven't had the chance to get back to it. Like I said in the last ask I'm into drama/romance rn and TCF is very firmly like aromantic in my opinion which I really appreciate about it. Like you said, the similarity with ORV is that Cale is like: I'm here to build and maintain a found family, not fuck around. Really scratches my face-slapping/action itch when I have it.

I've never really read fic about it tho, I think that's mainly because most fic I see advertised in the tag is ship fic with Cale getting some and I just so happen to think he's an ace/aro king, comes down to personal preference. I think there's a lot of potential for people to take the TCF characters and make a narrative about how platonic love can be inherently queer and subversive, because in so many cases the one thing that saves the characters from their fates in the original novel is Cale just... knowing about them and caring that they continue to exist, which is sweet.

Then like I said before most of the x-over stuff I like is characterxsetting swaps, not character-character meet-cutes. I think the main difference of ORV characters in the TCF setting from OG TCF is that KDJ as Cale would be just slightly more of a loser, okay? So like they both have these elements of "I know this story so I can seem cool and OP at the start as I slowly start making more and more sacrifices to maintain that image." But I think that Cale's absolutely hilarious POV that's slowly revealed of "actually I'm an apocalypse vet who read one book ever on his day off to try to keep the PTSD at bay" is a REALLY different perspective from Mr. Kim Reader who is obsessed with Ways of Survival and creates the universe by writing self-insert fanfiction. There's also the "I'm just here to slack off because I already lived a life full of trauma and strife" vs the "I've been showing a suicidal lack of care towards myself and don't believe I have a future because I already lived a life full of trauma and strife." Then, critically, I think that both the character of KRS and KDJ are getting something from their new world that they couldn't get in their old one, bonds with other people. ORV, however, in contrast to TCF, asks the question "Am I using these people for my own gains? Is saving them really something they should be grateful to me for? Aren't I the same guy who is alone and deserves to die?" and Cale is just like "I saved you, you're gonna live in my house now, I won't emotionally confront the impact that caring for you has had on my life unless its in a trial of life and death, k thanx bye."

Okay okay, this got away from me... basically what I'm saying is that it's hard to do 1 to 1 roleswaps with these characters, so I think the crossover setting would be a bit complicated.

Luckily, ORV as a narrative is literally constructed to make any crossover narrative ever completely possible. I would like take a point in time in the cannon of ORV, right after the divorce arc where YJH found out he was in a book and then they were put into like a scenario based around a different world (Kaiznex arc or however its spelled idk) and then have those roles be the world of TCF. So like KDJ wakes up as Cale and YJH wakes up as Choi Han and KDJ has to explain the setting to YJH and its like...

KDJ: OH haha this must be one of those books were a regular guy ends up as a character and knows everything about the protagonist so he helps him and...

YJH: ...

KDJ: ...

And then they just keep going, so I know they weren't in the kaizer permanente or whatever but imagine: biyoo as Raon, SYS and LGY as On and Hong, obvi very cute. And then I literally cannot be arsed to recall if there are any couples in TCF so IDK where JHW or LHS would end up that would have the same emotional resonance as the whole two palace people who are only kept sane by each other thing.

and I think HSY should be the white star AND also Choi Han's ancestor who wrote the cryptic books okay next question.

KRS in ORV setting would honestly be just like "oh not this fucking shit again." Literally hanging on by a thread in this universe where he read a book that he thought was a poor fictional history written by someone who wasn't there about "skills" from "stars" instead of having just plain ability users. I think if Choi Han were a regressor, it would be most fun if Cale didn't know and only read the first part where he messed everything up in 3rd and was like I can fix that and Choi Han is like Who?? Is??? this guy??? and then Alberu should be the author because him and Cale are funny like HSY and KDJ are funny. Alberu stealing jobs from women by being a funny bitch smh... Honestly I think that TCF characters in an ORV-like setting is sort of already answered by the Cale goes back in time in KRS's life thing and fixes stuff for them then has to go home bc he's white now.

OK. those are just my thoughts tho its been a while since i read tcf so idk how accurate that is, judge for yourself

mad for each other: a review of sorts cw: abuse

(i went into this show not knowing much except that it was about mental health and that people found it progressive. it’s 13 thirty-minute episodes, so it’s not much of a time investment.)

The first two episodes are pretty choppy in that the two “mad” leads dissolve into hysterics or uncontrolled rage every time they meet. It’s meant to show how they are misfits in regular society and also “crazy” by its standards. The man (Hwi oh) is a suspended cop with a history of assault and getting mandatory therapy sessions for his anger problem. The therapist is iffy at best.

Once we get past this setup though, the show becomes primarily about the paranoid female lead (Minkyoung) who lives an isolated life and in constant fear. She’s suspicious of everyone and takes steps all the time to ensure she can be safe in any situation, which often means she screams in terror and attacks people if they get too close or walk behind her for too long. (Which the male lead happens to do by coincidence) But is it really paranoia if your fears are real?

This is the part that’s amazing part to me: how they unfold exactly why she behaves this way. Why does she read into situations that seem harmless? Why is she suspicious of every single person she comes across? Why does she keep forgetting things she does all the time?

The narrative slowly delineates her history of abuse and the effects its had on her memory, her emotions, how she presents herself in public and her living situation. The focus is more on her and less on the events. I love how she consciously uses people’s assumptions about her “craziness” to protect herself. Hence, the open hair, the sunglasses and the flower behind her ear.

So far, Hwi oh is barely tolerable as a character, nor is his problem something that moves me. (He’s an angry cop!) What bothers me also is that in a story populated with women, there are mostly two kinds: absolute villains and ones the ML admonishes for being terrible people.

The writer saves this from being insufferable by writing the main secondary characters— women’s association president Kim Inja, part-timer Suhyun and Samantha— with some complexity and their own storylines. (I love all three of them)

It also helps that Hwi oh’s primary function from episode 3-12 (apart from romance) is to serve as a device to understand Minkyoung’s past and the journey she is on in the present. This is in addition to the arc we’re already on with her character.

Which brings me to why Minkyoung’s story is so compelling. She’s set up as an unreliable narrator of any scene she is witness to. It’s drummed in that she doesn’t trust herself either. This is what the writer uses to chalk out the complicated aftermath of trauma and abuse. From ep 3-12, the show centres her and peels of layer after layer to help us understand her behaviour. This is a person committed to survival, to her truth, and to learning to rebuild a life she has lost. She is shrill, hysterical and rude, everything that makes it easy for people around her to write her off. But the writer shows again and again, how in the face of suspicion and disbelief, even from a well-intentioned Hwi oh, she is right about everything and has absolutely valid reasons for how she does and does not defend her behaviour in public. Each time I think ‘surely, they will not take this particular thread to its realistic conclusion’, they do. WHICH IS WILD. Because every drama I’ve watched so far (except Law School) has hedged on a story like this. It’s also not held the "good men” accountable for their own toxicity.

All of this is why the literal and figurative car crash of a last episode absolutely ruins everything they’ve built till them. Hwi oh is shown to begin coming to terms with his anger until he absolutely loses it for “good reason” in defence of Minkyoung. The scenes where she confronts him about how his treatment of her, despite his best intentions, is just a degree removed from her abusive ex are so great. Then they fuck it up trying to tie up the romance between two “misfits” with a big bow. Except Hwi oh isn’t a misfit, he’s a cop with a history of going off the rails for “justice” and “catching the bad guy” and one who doesn’t fix himself. (This a trope far past its expiration date in murder mysteries, it doesn’t have a place anywhere anymore.) And he gets her back using tactics very similar to her abusive ex.

(In a limited way, I’m coming to understand why dramas make this U-turn. The writers are usually women, PDs are often men, and South Korea has a not-so-great relationship with feminism right now. I’ve also seen women there talk about what it’s like to confront men in public places.)

Popular media takes so long to catch to up how it validates violent male behaviour and what that violence even encompasses. (Like Bollywood has barely caught up to its stalker heroes, and the Salman Khan industrial complex is still at its peak. How do we even begin to talk about emotional violence?) I understand that and it also fills me with rage. It’s effect is so visible here in India. I would love to know what South Korean women thought of this show. In conclusion, watch for Minkyoung’s story and Oh Yeon-seo, for a stellar performance by Gil Hae-yeon as Minkyoung’s mother, for Bae Ji-won, Lee Suhyun and An Woo-yeon and end at episode 12. Episode 13 does not exist.

just finished princess hours (aka goong). i enjoyed it of course because ju ji hoon, also i cannot deny i'm trash for that kind of tropey romance drama. i can totally see why it’s a classic. however.

- the HAIR......my god the hair. those fluffy mullets (ok mullet maybe isn’t the word since they’re pretty long at the front too... but what do u call it??) they had back in 2006 were something.

i’m 100% serious it was actually the hair that put me off watching it for so long. (the hair is also a huge reason i’ll never watch boys over flowers, the difference is that i'll tolerate it for ju ji-hoon but for absolutely NOT for lee min-ho)

WAIT i googled this topic and learned so much. it’s not a mullet it's a WOLF CUT ur welcome.

- don't get me started on the hideous outfits either. i laughed out loud at some of them. pedal pushers and frilly corset tops over shirts and long socks with heels....formal jackets with no shirt underneath, bow ties and full denim suits...... all with massive statement necklaces and/or earrings. i'm gonna have nightmares for a while ok

- scandal after scandal and plot points that make no sense!! why does chae-kyung have to go abroad?? her brother even asks why it would help. and everyone’s just like haha yeah, ridiculous right? ANYway......

- like a billion other kdramas, everything could've been solved in like 2 minutes if they just TALKED to each other. also the king is the worst and totally to blame, along with yul's mother (lmao at her driving headlong into a truck at the end btw)

- heard there could be a remake next year so let's talk casting opinions. i would choose kim young-dae as lee shin. either song kang or park bo-gum as lee yul (either could pull off his niceness-turning-to-creepy-obsession well, i think). not sure yet about shin chae-kyung tbh... maybe kim hye-yoon?

I know that I’m very late to this, but please bear with me. this drama came out back in January, and at that time it didn’t pique my interest, since I’m not a huge medical drama watcher. as a matter of fact, this is the first medical drama that I’ve watched! I saw one of my close friends gush about the chemistry between Lee Sung Kyung and Ahn Hyo Seop (the actors playing the lead couple in DRTK 2) on her instagram story, so I decided to give it a watch. And to say that I was pleasantly surprised is an understatement.

This is genuinely the best kdrama I have watched ALL year. Everything about it so amazing. I was initially a bit worried because I haven’t yet watched the first season of Dr. Romantic, so I thought I’d have trouble following the storyline. But that was not the case at all! I could understand pretty much everything perfectly, and even though there were a few references to older characters, overall I wasn’t confused at all. And I’m not gonna lie, this kdrama kind of made me reconsider my future career options LMAOOO I high-key wanted to become a surgeon after watching this,, idk man, might fuck around and do medicine after I graduate high school. (my mom would die to hear me say these words)

The story revolves around the extremely talented doctor with a passion for helping and saving people, Bu Yong Ju, or Kim Sa Bu (played by Han Suk Kyu), as he’s referred to in the drama, the extremely intelligent, hardworking and sincere, but anxious doctor Cha Eun Jae (played by Lee Sung Kyung), and the talented lonewolf Seo Woo Jin (played by Ahn Hyo Seop), who’s struggling with debt. Kim Sa Bu recruits Cha Eun Jae and Seo Woo Jin to help run the chaotic Doldam Hospital, which is situated at a countryside, the place where rest of the story takes place.

All the characters in this kdrama are so well written, and all of them have reasons for doing the things that they do. All the side characters are so so so likeable (I particularly liked the Head Nurse’s Tigress mom-like character!) -- There is not one character that I can say is poorly written. Even the dude I hated the most (Dr. Yang Ho Joon) is a well written character

The storyline in this kdrama is by far one of the most interesting ones. I literally could not stop myself from binge watching the whole thing in less than a week lmao. That's the only complain I have -- I could not put my phone down. Every time I would finish an episode, I’d practically be dying to know what happens in the next one. Every episode brings a new medical case, and I would feel my blood pressure heighten up during each and every emergency treatment. The tension that our characters feel during a surgery seems very much palatable through the screen. Like you can tell, that this is a life and death situation. And every sigh of relief that you’d take after the patient is saved would feel earned.

I REALLY REALLY REALLY adored the camaraderie and the sense of community the staff at Doldam Hospital shared. Honestly, I can talk about their loving relationship with each other for hours. These people are very much a family. These are the characters you get really emotionally attached to. And I particularly love them because found family is my favorite tv/movie/book trope :”) They are literally what I want my ideal work environment to be like! if our relationship is not like the staff at Doldam Hospital, I don’t want it. 🙄👎

My favorite character, most definitely would be the Romantic Doctor himself, Kim Sa Bu. Honestly, everyone deserves a mentor like Kim Sa Bu in their life. His wise teachings, his eye for talent, his way of teaching people and helping them overcome their flaws is literally all I want in life. He has this way of reassuring people, that it’ll be okay as long as he’s there. In the end of the kdrama, he tells us to always be in touch with our idealistic side and to never let go of the romanticism inside of us. People might call him a madman, crazy, impractical, but Kim Sa Bu always puts values and ideals like empathy, doing the right thing, selflessness at the top. He’s a character that I’ll remember for a really long time.

And of course, I can’t forget Woo Jin and Eun Jae. These two are literally my babies. We see them grow as individuals, and as a duo/couple throughout the drama. They are legit one of my favorite slow burn couples ever. And their relationship is so beautiful, you can tell how much they care about each other. While Eun Jae teaches Woo Jin to be more open about his feelings, to sometimes rely on others, Woo Jin teaches Eun Jae to be more confident with her surgery skills. (CAN I TAKE A MOMENT TO JUST TALK ABOUT EUN JAE’S CHARACTER ARC? LIKE . OMG. I’m absolutely in love!! her character glow up is like the one I want. she went from being an insecure people pleaser with a good girl complex to a self assured and extremely skilled surgeon!! God I really want to have a character arc like her, because I really relate to how Eun Jae initially was lol) Anyway, I literally cANNOT stop fangirling over them. They’re always there for each other emotionally, every time one of them is going through something. Their emotional connection is just *chef’s kiss*. They’re in my “dream relationships” list. Also this is a quick disclaimer that you might feel like they’re a bit slow, but that’s because the story isn’t completely centered around their romance. That being said, I WOULD DIE TO SEE MORE OF THEM :(( like I literally go on youtube and re-watch all my favorite WooJae scenes. (I’m lonely can u tell)

Overall, this kdrama is literally perfection for me (it’s my emotional support kdrama now ahaha). I recommend it to people who like frenemies-to-lovers trope, found family trope, along with some good adrenaline rush (lol)

Also quick viewer discretion: This show contains themes of violence, death and r@pe/s3xual assault. it also contains A LOT of blood. Like, A LOT. I know this stuff triggers a lot of people, I advise those people to not watch it. please take care :( I love u <33

The books are cold under your fingers, and you smile as you walk past another row. The library is by far your favorite place to be. There are more stories to be read than you can handle, and you know you will never have the time to read every single one of them, but that doesn’t stop you from trying.

On today’s agenda – fairytales. Preferably, fairytales with romance involved. You aren’t having much luck finding the one that tickles your fancy, so to speak. However, part of that is due to the distraction on the other side of this shelf. You can see through to the next aisle by glancing over the tops of the books, where they don’t quite reach the top of the shelf. Just in your line of sight stands a tall man with chestnut-colored hair and thick black-framed glasses. He has his head down as he walks so you can’t see the whole of his face, but you can’t keep from continuously glancing over at him rather than at the books in front of you.

You pause when he does, steps coming to a halt. He turns to the shelf, and in a panic, you frantically grab for a book from the shelf so that your lingering stare isn’t too obvious. You open to a random page without thinking. The words are gibberish in your mind, and you aren’t paying much attention to them, but it provides a decent enough cover.

Glancing over the pages, you blink up at the man across the shelf. To your surprise, he is looking back at you. Your eyes meet all of a sudden, and you internally scream as panic settles over your bones. He, however, seems just as surprised as you, dark eyes going wide when you look into them. Rather than saying anything to each other, you both turn away. You hastily shove the book in your hands back onto the shelf without thinking and move down the aisle again.

Yikes… that wasn’t awkward at all.

With a soft sigh, you move into the next aisle, glancing over the titles in the hopes of just finding what you want so you can settle down on a chair and read to your heart's content. As you trail through the rows of shelves, yet again you find a figure moving on the other side of the shelf. It’s the same man with thick glasses, although when you glance at him this time you realize that the glasses have no lenses. A fashion statement, perhaps? If not that, then his reasoning for wearing the glasses is ridiculous and nonexistent.

Your stare lingers a bit too long this time, however, and the man catches your stare again. Rather than turning away immediately, he offers a small smile, flashing deep dimples.

“We seem to be following each other, don’t we?” He says, a clear tone tearing through the silence between the two of you. A light laugh leaves your lips in response. “I don’t mean to be creepy or anything like that but… you have been wandering through the aisles for quite some time.”

“O-Oh?” You stammer, leaning back. He seems to realize how creepy his words sound regardless of his prior warning. You reassure him with a small smile. “I can’t seem to find something that piques my interest.”

“So many things to read, and yet it’s so hard to find the right one?” He suggests, quirking a brow.

“Exactly!” You nod along with his words. “Uh, I don’t know if this is proper, but… my name is Y/N L/N.” It’s a strange thing: introducing oneself through the openings of a bookshelf, and that strangeness seems apparent to both of you.

“Kim Namjoon,” he replies, matching your smile despite the awkwardness. “I swear I’m not following you.”

“Oh, now that sounds even more creepy,” you say as you tilt your head to the side.

“Ah, yes, I kinda realized that the second I said it.” Namjoon pauses, tongue darting out to moisten his lips. “Maybe I could help you find what you’re looking for?” He suggests, tone rising in question. A faint blush taints his cheeks as he speaks, and he refuses to meet your eye.

“That would be really helpful,” you mutter back, trying to hide the quickly growing smile on your lips. “But… maybe I could treat you to coffee first?”

You aren’t normally so bold and outgoing like this, although Namjoon’s appearance certainly is edging you on, and you can’t stop thinking about how damn cute those dimples are.

“Oh? Coffee?” Namjoon echoes. A shaky laugh leaves his lips. “That would be nice, but I won’t let you pay for me. I aim to be a proper gentleman.”

You respond with a laugh of your own, nodding in approval. “I’m okay with that. Those glasses are a bit distracting though. I’ll only let you pay for yourself if you take them off.” Namjoon’s laugh turns into a full-blown cackle, and he immediately reaches up to his face and pulls the frames off his face.

“Fair enough, fair enough, Y/N. You have yourself a deal then.” He continues speaking even as he walks around the shelf to join you on your aisle. As he gets closer to you, you suddenly realize exactly how tall he is. The height is almost intimidating, but his gentle voice and soft dimples dispel the intimidation in a heartbeat. “Shall we go?”

“Absolutely,” you say, extending your hand for him to take.

“What kind of book were you looking for anyway?” Namjoon asks as you lead the way out of the library.

“Ah, I was looking for a fantasy book. Maybe with a little romance. You know, the typical.”

“Sometimes,” Namjoon starts, glancing at you out the corner of his eye, “what you’re looking for is a bit closer than you think.” There is a bit of coyness to his tone, and the way he’s looking at you causes your stomach to do a little backflip. You didn’t find the proper romantic fairytale you were looking for, but perhaps you found the next best thing in Namjoon.
