We're not born gaslighting ourselves, often we've internalised this voice from our emotionally immature/ wounded gaslighting parent. Or we have low self- confidence. It's important to learn to identify this abusive voice in order to not act out on/ not engage with it. We need to develop an empowering inner voice (we needed and deserved as a child) instead. Self- gaslighting is not an official term, it’s self- criticism actually. This voice saved us in childhood from (parental) rejection. Now we’re safe to kindly simply not engage with it anymore, tell it: “I appreciate you efforts but we’re fine now & don’t need you anymore” Self- coaching builds you up, self- criticism/ gaslighting tears you down. The purpose of this post is not to stop being self- critical but to do it in a constructive (curiosity) rather than in a destructive (judgmental) way, validating rather than invalidating your underlying needs.

Dissociative Identity Disorder: “When experiences or emotions become too overwhelming, the mind clevely encapsulates the material and stores it for safe-keeping. Many people respond this way in the face of trauma, but the additional step that occurs in this process, in the case of DID, is the formation of distinct ego states that carry the experience.” ― The Dissociative Identity Disorder Sourcebook #dissociativeidentitydisorder #dissociation #psychology #trauma #deborahbrayhaddock #didsourcebook #osdd #ddnos #dissociativedisorder #otherspecifieddissociativedisorder #cptsd #complexptsd #aftertrauma #alteridentity #dissociativeparts #mentalhealth #didmpd #abusesurvivors #understandingdissociativedisorders #understandingtrauma #psychoeducation #didyouknow #dissociativeidentitydisorderawareness #didsystem #multiplicity https://www.facebook.com/TraumaAndDissociation/photos/a.357820054319427.1073741828.357814604319972/1125168497584575/?type=3

I started my journey in transformative work at the age of 16, running a children’s program at a domestic violence shelter. That was over 25 years ago! Throughout those years I’ve worked for and with many organizations of all different sizes, missions, and approaches. However, there are three dynamics I consistently see inside of organizations that undermine the work and cause people to leave: 1) Unaddressed conflict and harm/violence occurring inside of the organization 2) Staff/leadership holding experiences of trauma, loss and violence (their own and those of their clients/members) without adequate tools, resources, or support, 3) Organizational culture and practices that are harmful, unsustainable and out of alignment with the stated principles, mission and vision. I believe that transformative work can be successful and sustainable when the people doing it have practices of safety and accountability, receive the tools and resources they need to be resilient and sustainable long term, and work within a culture of mutual respect that reflects the organization’s stated values and mission. Our communities need this . Our movements need this. #thisboislife #communityaccountability #griefandloss #understandingtrauma #organizationalshapeshifting

Trauma can be anything that overwhelms our nervous system’s ability to cope. Something can be deeply traumatic for one, and a mild inconvenience for another, and both of these experiences are real and valid.
