-FLASHBACK FRIDAY- To the 22/08/2024: The Human Torch.
Tumblr media
Its been while since I posted a redrawing of a Marvel Superhero! So here's my take on Johnny Storm a.k.a The Human Torch. I drew this wayyy back in August and Its only till now I've got around to colouring this Pic in.
I don't really have a whole lot to say about Johnny I mean I liked him. Especially when I watched the 90s Fantastic Four cartoon cause he was like the Youngest member of the Group and was getting into some kind of trouble I could relate to him somewhat. The spontaneous combustion as a Special ability not so much relatable...
Oh Yeah! It was good to see Chris Evans reprise the role as Johnny/The Human Torch in the recent Deadpool and Wolverine Film!

Hello hello!! Just wanted to say that I really love seeing your traditional drawings, they're so charming 🥺 It's pretty rare to see trad. art on here compared to digital, which is a little sad.. there's just something about the personality it has!
Do you find that the post engagement they receive is less than your digital works? Personally I've had this experience but I'm not sure if it's different for other artists 😯 It's discouraged me a lot from posting since I don't regularly have enough time to sit down and make a digital piece vs drawing in my sketchbook 😓
On a related note, is there a pen you'd recommend for sketching/doodling? All the pen drawings in your sketchbook posts are so pretty 🫶
Thank you so much! That means a lot honestly. Seeing other peoples sketches is one of my favourite things, you're right, it's generally less perfect but I think it has more charm because of that. I feel like *personally* I actually often favour traditional stuff over digital when I see it online- I have a big collection of digital sketchbooks and fav'd youtube flipthroughs.
HOWEVER yeah I think we are in the minority. To be completely honest on itch.io I've actually only made 4 sketchbook sales*, I assume there's a market out there but I ain't hitting it haha! I do have a good chunk of patrons that comment and like my sketches, which is wonderful, and I often get sweet tags on the doodles I share here- but you're right that engagement is lower. I'd encourage you do just do it for yourself, though! There's nothing like having a big stack of art in real life. Maybe that's a privileged position for me to have, at the moment I don't need to worry about engagement on my sfw art, but also it's a shame to not do something you enjoy because of numbers. (I would recommend using a scanner if you want to catch more peoples eyes. Mines crap but it's way better than photos were.)
Pen wise I am a picky bitch, I like things that don't require pressure, make a uniformish line, and ink that flows easy- so I prefer gel pen styles or fountain pens. My most recent fav were some lyreco retract gel 0.7's my partner randomly brought home from work lol, but I lost the black one and replaced it with a uniball signo 0.7 [UM-120*], honestly they're just regular gel pens though, I generally try them out in a shop and pick ones that don't blob or scratch.

My fountain pen is a pilot kakuno, which atm has that blue grey ink in (sailor 224) and I really love it. (also I put it into a water brush pen) I've also used carbon platinum for a good waterproof ink.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Good luck with your sketchbook endeavours, and thank you again!
*there are...at least two types of uniball signo, and the other one with a soft grip is bad imo.
**thank you to those sweethearts who bought the sketchbook!

I really really really like your art!!
ITS SO SKETCHY it also feels so… creative? Idk if that’s the right word but it feels like it’s the raw art and you can kinda see the process? Idk if that makes sense but your art makes me feel things and I’m very happy about it
Also I LOVE the eyes SO MUCH!
+ I have a question… what are the grey shaded spots? Like are they watercolor, markers, or something else?
I hope you have a fantastic day/night! Your art is incredible ^-^
Aaaa thank you so much! /)>u<(\ I'm happy that it makes you happy!
The gray shading is usually fountain pen ink in a water brush. I like keeping the sketch lines because it looks kind of weird to me when it's clean, sometimes, like something's missing. It's probably just me.
Tumblr media
I use a gray Micron for the initial sketch, and then a pen for the outlines. Most of these I just use my Uniball One, the ink goes down smooth and it dries pretty quick and doesn't smear when I go over with my waterbrush.
<3 Hope you have a nice day/night/week too!

been a while since I shared my studying but I have been doing it.
This morning I had a fever so I got a late start. Lately I've gone from using uniball signo pend to using pentel energell. I have to say, the pentel pens are a lot better for writing in Japanese. No matter which way you write a stroke, the ink is consistent.

Do you have a digital brush you recommend/ could you show us what you use for trad?
I use a handful of textured Clip Studio brushes for lineart (Mugman, Dry Brush, Broken Inker). I really like the dry looks you can get with some, but they're not anything super special-- usually programs already come with brushes like that. Sometimes, if you toy with the opacity/blend modes, you can make them looks more like traditional inks! As for coloring, I use brushes that emulate watercolors and markers. Texture Supply Co. and Retro Supply both have some amazing tools for that!
As for traditional, I can't stress how much you can do with a simple ballpoint pen and alcohol markers. That's my go-to. I use about 9 colors in total and mix/blend to get different ones. I'm not picky about brands, as long as it doesn't smear terribly. I use Uniball Signa for most traditional art. But the thing I am picky about is my paper. I use Doodle paper (like the stuff from the dollar store). It absorbs ink quickly, as well as marker. It's cheap and abundant and I love it!

do u have any pen recommendations like. for traditional art
the good ol' ballpoint pen
pilot V5 rolling ball ink pen (my favorite for quick observational art)
tombow abt dual brush pens - i use the grayscale colors because they make for good tones & shadows
uniball jetstream pen
uh any sort of calligraphy pens with flat ends.. the ones I use dried out kinda fast so I wouldn't really recommend them but they're good practicing hard shadows and whatnot

18/08/2024: Sue and Franklin.
Tumblr media
Well since a Few of you liked that one drawing I drew of Reed and Baby Valerie. Consider this one a Follow up featuring Susan Storm and their son "Franklin Richards". He might not look It right now but Franklin is one of the most powerful mutants in the Marvel Universe!
And yes I made my Interpretation of Susan Storm into a Plus sized woman because now and again I like to draw plus sized versions of certain characters just to see how they'd look.

Hey Rho! I was wondering if you have any pen recommendations? I've been trying out the uniball one p in .5 which is vastly different from my usual .38 - and I was wondering if you tend to stick with the same pen or change it up!
Oh anon here’s a long answer for you.
In general, I require my pen to be waterproof and lightfast or at least water-resistant, so the answers here reflect that. I also enjoy thicker lines because I write large (as you can see). A 0.5mm is the thinnest I would go, 0.7mm and above is preferred. In fountain pen terms, I use medium or broad nibs. But if you like 0.38mm, you might like EF nibs.
I have used fountain pens since I was a kid, so my natural recommendation is a fountain pen. I love being able to use one pen for years. It’s less plastic, and you can refill it with whatever ink you like.
Fountain Pen Recommendations:
- TWSBI Eco (broad nib): So smooth, with a wet nib like a water hose, large capacity, and satisfying to use. It shows ink characteristics well. It gets mistaken for a vape sometimes, which is funny. I stopped using my other pens when I got this. Definitely in my top 2.
- Pilot Metropolitan (medium nib): I used this for many years. Great workhorse and bang for your buck.
- Platinum 3776 (medium nib): My first and only gold nib. My current daily use pen. It’s expensive, yes, but worth it. I use my good stuff and don’t baby it.
- If you only get one, I recommend the TWSBI Eco.
Fountain pen ink is another rabbit hole to go down, but be careful not to buy too many bottles. I have spent literal years trying to use up my bottle of Noodler’s Black, and it’s only halfway done.
Good Fountain Pen Ink Brands I Have Enjoyed:
- Diamine: Usually not waterproof but tons of colors. I was into their limited editions for a while.
- Pilot Iroshizuku: Some water resistance but not a lot. Great quality and pretty bottles.
- If you only get one, get a Diamine Eclipse or a set of 3 Iroshizuku ink in small bottles.
Non-Fountain Pen Recommendations:
- Uniball Signo 307: Amazing smooth pen and archival! I bring this with me on the go.
- STAEDTLER Pigment Liner: Workhorse fineliner pen. I’ve used Micron too, but this feels like it lasts longer.

It’s the moment you’ve all been waiting for… my favorite pen is… the uniball one gel pen! In literally any size
Tumblr media
When I tell you the colors are SO vibrant and SO smooth. It’s all I used for the notes in this post
I will live and die by this pen. It does WONDERFUL under highlighters and won’t smear. It also writes on correction tape beautifully as well!!!! I want to thank whoever left their uniball one pen behind in my orgo lab because I stole the pen and was CHANGED as a person
Pentel Energel is my very close second. I just have grown to not like how flow-ey the ink is and the colors are no where near as vibrant. Anyways LOOK at all these pretty colors you can get! And they have a range of sizes too ( .38, .5, and .7)
