Music Tag
@bobbiflekman tagged me to do this, and it involves music so of course I'm going to do it! Thank you for the tag!!
Last Song I Listened To: Lush - "For Love" - If I believed in angels this is what they would sound like. Miki Berenyi was my pretend wife in the 90s! LOL
Current Favorite Song: Whores. - "Quitters Fight Song." If you dig bands like Chat Pile, the Jesus Lizard or Unsane you will probably like Whores. Plus this music video is absolutely awesome!
Song Of My Choice: Public Circuit - "Reach For The Knife." The music video for this song is epic, rivaling even the "Time Stand Still" video from Rush. Honestly thought maybe this was a joke until I realized that the song is actually good. A bit of a throwback to the 80s, for the music and the video.
I won't tag anyone specific here, but I would love to see some other people's songs for this if they have time and want to do it! Thanks again for the tag @bobbiflekman! Hope everyone is having a good weekend!

Matador Records' claim to fame does not lie in a specific musician, the period made them as the 90's confirm, the latter gave the label a big break. Then again, they did sign many prominent groups within the most triumphant genre of the time, i.e. alternative rock. Of course, they didn't settle for what the latter was during the 90's, they still housed some that were quite close to the underground at that time. One such could be Unsane, whose soundscapes continue to unnerve us. There's something quite nihilist in the band's music, you keep having a feeling you can hear their music as a soundtrack for a brutal attack. True, they're not really death metal, but their sonic cruelty reminds of one Bill Laswell project, though Unsane are more polished.

12 CHOICE CUTS OF PURE UNSANITY -- ONLY ON MAN'S RUIN RECORDS.
PIC(S) INFO: Spotlight on complete package art to "Amrep Xmas," the fierst live album by American noise rock band UNSANE, released in 1997 through Man's Ruin Records. Sleeve art/package design by the late, great Frank Kozik (1962-2023).
ALBUM OVERVIEW: "Recorded live to a mobile unit in St. Paul, MN, in late 1996 for the Amphetamine Reptile Records Christmas party, "Amrep Christmas" was UNSANE's first foray into live album territory, later bested by "Attack: Live in Japan," an import-only set recorded in Tokyo.
Noise rock doesn't always translate well from the stage to tape, what with the unpredictable dynamics of small clubs and the difficulty in getting clean recording out of overdriven amps. Accordingly, this album is rather uneven. It certainly captures the manic intensity of the band performing live, but there are a few glitches, including tape drop-outs, an ill-timed reel change, and some small errors in song execution.
Such phenomena also indicates that, unlike many (perhaps most) big-budget live albums, there were no overdubs -- this is strictly plug in and play, live to tape. Tonally, Spencer's chugging Telecaster guitar is on target, even if his voice shows decided road wear. The set, while focusing primarily on the "Scattered, Smothered, and Covered" album, contains a few gems from "Total Destruction" and the band's infamous version of LED ZEPPELIN's "Four Sticks.""

Music Reccs. Pt2.
“The Trilogy of the most underrated Swedish band: Breach what is your hardcore?
So to explain Breach we have to take a step back and start talking about Swedish Hardcore, cause most of you are awere of Swedish Crust or D beat, Mob 47,Anti-Cimex,Totalitar,Wolfbrigade\Wolfpack,Disfear,Skitsytem and Nasum (even if they are more on the Grind side of the thing). But in the 90′s something new was rising influenced by the new sound of Victory records and more Metal giutars, especially in Umea and Lulea (for example Refused,Fireside and Raised Fist) Breach were always the more aggressive and darkest sounding band, clear Crust inspiration and New York Hardcore at first, but with some edge to experimental vibe and in their first two ablum “Outlines” (E.P. 1994) Friction (1995) and .But in 1997 Swedish Hardcore started to change (Refused were almost collapsing under the pressure of their ambitious masterpiece Shape Of Punk To Come,Fireside started flirting with a more melodic direction and Raised Fist were the next big thing and Swedish skate\pop punk was growing in populariy with acts such Millencolin,Not Fun At All and Satanic Surfers) in this landscape Breach came out with a record that still to this day is impossible to describe “It’s Me God” an album that starts with what will set the tone for the rest of the record ground breaking guitar, sonical landscape where you wait for the next move, a voice that that strikes trough the layer of noise, an always persistent almos tribal drum. This album is not an expirience is a call to army there’s not a single secod where you know what to expect and what to ask for, song like Deadheads or Clot sounds so desperate and yet so energetic and you realize that you still have almost 30 minute of this record in front of you. The flow of this album is incredible we start seeing their first shift in a more Post-Hardcore\Post-Metal inspiration, there’s a clear Neurosis inspiration with a bit of early american metalcore some Convorge and some Unsane blend in, the desperate sound of Breach hits you with those absurde wall of sound that and those unstoppable rythmic section backed up by abrasive guitar, Presume The Forgotten take you of the road just when you start to understand how those guys think electronic noises and a stady guitar start the song, then the tribal drum and distorted guitar its you in a lo-fi mix, than the audio goes back up and it its you with this confused almost out of tempo rythm and almost thrash metal guitars, before fading into a into a melodic session and hit you up again and then, faiding again into glooming electronic noises, At this point you realize Breach don’t work only for their sound and energy but for how much they can play around with it and still leave you hooked up with fast tempo changes, dark melodies and such an imposing bass. “It’s Me God” is the showcase of what Breach were able of doing ,in 1999 they relesed “Venom” which not only expand on the formula that breach created but challeged themselves to do more , expecially with some more decise doom oriented track like “Heroine” which take is time to grow and explode, But also fast and more frenetic track like “Murder” and “Common Day”, With song like “Diablo” and “Black Sabbath” we start seeing some attempt at instrumental tracks , the band was getting more caotich too, expecially on the bass on track like “Game of Vain” sound like “Plesuredome” and “Hell is my witness” is the final salute to the old-Breach and I say that because “Penetration” (the last track) is an admonition to the future of Breach an almost post-rock\post metal tracks. Venom was the first record to cough various attention from the critcs outside that small undergound community good reviews form Kerrang!,touring with Entombed and Neourosis and they also added another drummer for what will be their last and kinda prophetic title “Kollapse” (2002) the album starts with this kinda positive post-rock melody that kinda remainds of band like Isis the track is “Big Strong Boss” and it goes into this big and energic crescendo sorrounded with strange synth sounds in the background and the voice explode in the second track “Old Ass Player” fully embracing a metalcore attitude and a the voice distort itself all-over the track after two instrumental the more atmospheric “Sphincter Ani” and more violent and straight to the point “Alarma” we are hitted by some clean voice out-of-nowhere in “Lost Crew” a very danceble(?) and yet so deep song, before it abruptly slow down before hitting you back up with a wall of heavy metal guitar and guttural voice to remaind you that you should never joke with Breach. Then therese “Teeth Out” a full on kinda-psychedelic 9 minute instrumental masterpiece ,Before getting back in the fight with “Breathing Dust”, Mr.Marshall comes next (my favorite track on this record) delayed and bizzare almos mumbly vocals,a slow and distroted guitar that crash down into the ground followed up by some slow drums slowly growing back out of that ground, then a distroted bass go thru the mix of this record blurying evreything else then the guitars follows next building a wall of dissonant noise until the track collepse on itself leaving just the bass fuzz on the background. after that “Seven” whispered voice, tribal drums in form of bongos and beautiful guitar in clean some keybords a confused warm song in the middle of a destructive storm, “Murder Kings And Killer Queens” is the last glimpse and maybe goodbye of the violence of Breach, the album close with “Kollapse” psychadelic like “Seven” with no voice, full synth are used, that fenomenal bass fuzz comeback, some delayed and distorted voice, an pressing rythm and beautiful what assume I assume is a xylophone close the album.Breach ended there, just to reuinite 5 years later and destroyed their instruments at their final show cause they were done forever, never to be seen again (at least together).
Breach are a band that will never happen again, so much to learn from this guys, their sound their willingness to try everything out for one quest: The search of a sound, cause describing Breach trhu other band is impossible Breach were themeselves, so when you ask yourself what’s your sound ask to yourself what I’ve to do to search for that sound.
Thank you guys, if you see any errors or you have some more detail hmu.

Best Films of 2018
This list may seem a few months late but I consider the movie season to stretch from January through February of the following year — or until after the Academy Awards ceremony is held. This usually overlaps with the slate of new films debuting at Sundance and other early festivals but that's just the way Hollywood works; awards season is truly never over.
Though movie studios are still focusing on superhero blockbusters and films based on existing intellectual property, 2018 offered a number of original gems among some bona fide hits. Films like the atmospheric sci-fi thriller "Annihilation" and Maggie Gyllenhaal's tour de force of a performance in "The Kindergarten Teacher" just missed my top 10 of 2018. While most of the movies in my list didn't make much of a splash at the box office, they each have a distinct point of view, tone and push the boundaries of what moviemaking can be. From a film shot entirely on an iPhone to a touching story about queer friendship, 2018 was a diverse and solid year for film.
Below are my top 20 favorite movies of 2018.
20. “Burning,” Lee Chang-dong
19. “Happy as Lazzaro,” Alice Rohrwacher
18. “The House that Jack Built,” Lars von Trier
17. “Juliet, Naked,” Jesse Peretz
16. “BlacKkKlansman,” Spike Lee
15. “Shoplifters,” Hirokazu Kore-eda
14. “If Beale Street Could Talk,” Barry Jenkins
13. “First Man,” Damien Chazelle
12. “The Kindergarten Teacher,” Sara Colangelo
11. “Annihilation,” Alex Garland
10. “Unsane,” Steven Soderbergh
"Unsane" is Steven Soderbergh's first iPhone movie. He followed this psychological thriller with "High Flying Bird" on Netflix earlier this month, a snappy basketball movie about the behind the scenes action starring Andre Holland ("Moonlight, "The Knick"). For "Unsane," Soderbergh sets his iPhone 7 Plus on "The Crown" star Claire Foy, who plays Sawyer, a troubled woman who is involuntarily institutionalized. Soderbergh makes the best use of the iPhone, making "Unsane" feel claustrophobic and disorienting to match Sawyer's state of mind. Foy gives a great performance of a woman on the edge, making this little-seen flick so much better than it ought to be.
09. “Vox Lux," Brady Corbet
"Vox Lux" is not a good movie. It's a fascinatingly bizarre one, though. It's the kind of strange concoction that has stuck with me since seeing it a few months ago. It's a twisted version of "A Star is Born" when a young singer Celest (played by Raffey Casssidy as a teen and Natalie Portman as an adult) survives a school shooting and is transformed into a mega pop star a la Lady Gaga. Every choice here is so strange — from a Willem Deafoe narration to having Cassidy play Celest's daughter. And then there's Portman's mind-boggling performance (The New York Times' film critic Manohla Dargis put it best, writing that Portman has an "accent that sounds like it's been lifted from a New York cabby in an old Hollywood comedy." The last musical number is terrible and the pop songs that we're to believe propelled Celest into stardom are quite bad (they were written by Sia but sound like tracks she never planned to release). Director Brady Corbet (an actor best known for his role in "Mysterious Skin" and his directorial debut "The Childhood of a Leader") makes a huge swing with "Vox Lux" and attempts to say something grand about our culture, pop music and tragedy but it's ultimately a can't-look-away-misfire. The kind of disaster I'll happily re-watch again and again.
08. "Suspiria," by Luca Guadagnino
Like "Vox Lux," Luca Guadagnino's take on the cult classic "Suspiria" aims high. But unlike Bradly Corbet's film, Guadagnino's remix of Dario Argento iconic 1977 giallo horror film is successful. With a running time of 153 minutes, the 2018 "Suspiria" is only spiritually connected to the original, expanding on Argento's "Three Mothers" trilogy. Guadagnino smartly ignores the original's Technicolor gore and its iconic soundtrack from Goblin, making his version of the movie dull grey and enlists Radiohead front man Thom Yorke for its spooky music. "Suspiria" also also features Dakota Johnson's best performance ever and another stellar turn from Tilda Swinton. Guadagnino channels Rainer Werner Fassbinder, adding texture to why "Suspiria" is set in 70s Germany and making great use of the political climate at the time and a coven of witches.
07. "Lean on Pete," Andrew Haigh
Out filmmaker Andrew Haigh's follow up to "45 Years" is a quiet road trip movie about a boy and his horse. Charlie Plummer gives one of the best performances of the year as Charley — a dirt poor teen who finds solace in taking care of an aging racehorse named Lean on Pete. The film shifts major gears after Charley is hit with tragedy in the first third of the film, sparking him to run away with his new animal friend in search of his aunt across the country. "Lean on Pete" isn't as sentimental as one may assume; it's a dark film that rests on Plummer's shoulders, proving he's one of the strongest young actors of his generation.
06. "Eighth Grade," Bo Burnham
Comedian and YouTube star Bo Burnham's directorial debut "Eighth Grade" is a horror movie. Starring the sensational Elsie Fisher as middle school student Kayla, "Eighth Grade" puts the experience of a young teen under a magnifying class, amplifying every awkward moment and pump those tense scenes with the kind of intense energy one would feel while watching slasher flick. But "Eighth Grade" is ultimately beautiful movie that tracks 13-year-old Kayla as she navigates her last year before entering high school. Burnham captures the essence of being a middle schooler and not for once plays Kayla's experience for cheap laughs. The things she's interested in — especially vlogging — are treated with respect and dignity, making "Eighth Grade" a lovely and felt experience.
05. "A Star is Born," Bradley Cooper
Bradley Cooper's remake of a "A Star is Born" was one of the most exciting cultural moments of 2018. From the memes to the actual film — when the moment hits that Cooper is actually pulling it off — this tragic Hollywood story, starring a marvelous Lady Gaga, was one of the best movies to think and talk about. It also happens to be very good.
04. "Roma," Alfonso Cuarón
For how technically impressive "Roma" is (that cinematography! The sound!) Alfonso Cuarón's memory piece packs an emotional punch. Cuarón focuses on Cleo (breakout star Yalitza Aparicio), a nanny for a family in 70s Mexico City. Based on Cuarón's real life nanny from that time, the filmmaker puts Cleo's experience and story on a huge scale. Her small story is treated like a war epic. "Roma" is why movies exist, an achievement in storytelling and cinematic scope.
03. "The Favourite," Yorgos Lanthimos
Yorgos Lanthimos pulls of a feat with "The Favourite" a wickedly funny movie about power, women and sex. Its three stars Olivia Colman, Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz give incredible performances each on a different wavelength. Lanthimos's touch makes "The Favourite" slightly off kilter, thanks to fisheye lenses, modern music and dance. There hasn't been such a twisted period piece since Sofia Coppola's 2006 masterpiece "Marie Antoinette."
02. "Can You Ever Forgive Me?" Marielle Heller
"Can You Ever Forgive Me?" probably has one of the worst trailers of 2018. It suggests is a run-of-the-mill Oscar bait movie with comedic genius Melissa McCarthy making a blatant attempt to Get Serious. But Marielle Heller's film is anything but that, considering it earned just three Academy Award nominations (McCarthy for Best Actress, Richard E. Grant for Best Supporting Actor and Nicole Holofcener and Jeff Whitty for Best Adapted Screenplay) and isn't expected to take home any. Nevertheless, the story about biographer-turned-scammer Lee Israel turns out to be a touching story about queer friendship. It's a specific New York City 90s story that's heartfelt and beautiful. Indeed, McCarthy as Israel is wonderful as is Grant, who plays gay British smooth talker Jack Hock. "Can You Ever Forgive Me?" is the kind of movie that is currently overlooked but will go on to become a cult favorite.
01. "Hereditary," Ari Aster
"Hereditary" is hands down the scariest movie of 2018. It's hardly a horror movie, although it's classified as such since supernatural moments occur. But it's the most stressful, intense and twisted family drama in some time. At the center of this film is Toni Collette's masterful performance as Annie Graham, a mother dealing with the loss of her own mother and how that sets off a chain of events that uproots her reality. The rabbit hole she goes down is — well there's really no other way to put this — extremely fucked up. She's put through the ringer and Collette is fully committed here as "Heredity" explores what it's like to be a mother, deals with loss, grief, tragedy and familial bounds that we've been taught to be unbreakable. "Heredity" asks what if those bonds somehow did snap? The answer is that all hell breaks loose.

“...totally cheerless New York noise that i thoroughly enjoyed...Definitely not a party record.”
COP SHOOT COP review by MARK LO
DAMP #6
Winter 1991

KEVIN KRAYNICK, Editor
Consumer Revolt was most definitely not on Cuneiform Records, which still exists and is highly regarded. Consumer Revolt was released on Circuit Records, which was most definitely not highly regarded (except for the music) and did not exist that much longer after releasing this record. From discogs: “Short-lived music label from New York, active from late 80s until early 90s. Their intentions were to gather the most prominent underground groups from NY, like Cop Shoot Cop, Unsane etc but things didn't work out for them. Sean from Surgery used to work for them as well.”

Best Of 2018
Can I just not comment on the year overall and get to the good stuff? Cool.
Here are our top albums of 2018, in alphabetical order, with a few honorable mentions and a mix to download that cherry-picks a song from each of the listed albums. Cheers!
Actors - It Will Come To You Full kudos and props to Aversionline (who have been doling out primo reviews, resulting in many purchases since the early 2000s) to keying us in to this one... in fact he said it best, “Thoroughly impresses with its cinematically synthwaved brand of forlorn-yet-danceable post-punk that wanders through an early-2000's Interpol type of take on such influences; plus a lush, modernized air of darkness that brings individuality to Actors' approach.”
The Body - I Have Fought Against It, But I Can’t Any Longer This Portland duo continues the expansion of their sound, going beyond avant-noise-metal-experimentalism and further into electronic realms. The addition of female vocals on multiple tracks, ranging from angelic to war cries, along with carefully placed stringed instrumentation, expand their sonic palate even further. Post-future primitivism at its best.
Candy - Good To Feel Metallic hardcore that’s short, sweet, and to the point (oh, and pissed off). Most reviews/reviewers are really patting themselves on the back as they specifically codify the various genres/scenes this record touches on... However, the most telling thing: this album is nine songs in 18 minutes.
Convulsing - Grievous Admittedly, this is the album on our list, we still need to spend more time with (the average song length is about eight and a half minutes - usually that puts our guard up fast)... but it’s been captivating to see the balance between the visceral heaviness (and speed) when delivered with deliberate, unfolding song structures (RIYL: Ulcerate).
Del Judas - Deity Dark, gothy rock/americana - not unlike King Dude’s earlier releases, but with higher production value and delivered with more impassioned vocals, like from some of the acts of the 80s that crossed over from this style into pop culture (e.g. The Cult, The Church, etc.)
Harm’s Way - Posthuman Metallic HxC that brings the meathead grooves, perfect for working out. Heavy.
Holygram - Modern Cults Drab Majesty didn’t put out a record in 2018 (booo!), but here’s the next best thing. Holygram add a little tweak to the gothy-dancy-yet-mopey post-punk/new-wave motif but introduce a little lightness via shoegaze washes ala White Lies or The Weekend.
Immortal - Northern Chaos Gods Zero innovation has never been more welcome. Icy black metal from the masters, no Abbath - no problem, with just a touch of the classic and anthemic mid-era Bathory. There might be a slight dose of monotony throughout the album as a whole, but when the nostalgia of this sound and style hits, it’s easy to be forgiving.
Jaye Jayle - No Trail And Other Unholy Paths Rustic Americana from the frontman of Young Widows. Vacillates between “dusty ‘ol west” and “noir movie scene with protagonist looking out the cab window driving by a rainy city and grimy neon lights” - each modality is weary and searching.
Jesus Piece - Only Self When there was a face we wanted to melt this year, the song turned to the most was “Punish” from Jesus Piece. Pitch perfect late 90s/early 2000′s metallic hardcore channeled through a modern lens (and yea, yea, some reviews will probably mention the latter half of the record experimenting with more noisy, doomy songs - they’re cool too).
Kælan Mikla - Nótt Eftir Nótt Icelandic trio that nails the coldwave balance, sometimes teetering into dance territory, sometimes pulling back into melancholic pop, often reminiscent of Ladytron (who we love).
King Dude - Music To Make War To Shouldn’t be a surprise to see King Dude on the list at this point if you’ve been following along for a few years... Also, not surprising: our pithy “review” of his new album... which is the broken record quip of his previous few albums, i.e. “A continued expansion of his sound, blah blah blah...” Dark occult rock with dashes of highly niche sub-genres (e.g. garage, gothy confessional, proto-pysch rock, etc.)
Our Place Of Worship Is Silence - With Inexorable Suffering Bestial blackened death metal that sounds feral and unhinged. Cavernous bellows, but tight and crisp guitars that can crunch as much as provide disorienting dissonance. It’s hard to put into words, but these guys are really doing something unique that is nuanced (at least to those who listen to batshit crazy metal regularly), and checks a lot of disparate boxes simultaneously.
Secret Cutter - Quantum Eraser Biggest surprise of the year. No real reviews or fanfare, just a recommendation or two from a reliable source. But wow! What a great sound and style here: blending downtuned simple, noise-rock riffs, think Unsane trying to play sludge, with flashes of adrenaline in monochrome. There’s something about the dry sounding production and drone-influenced riffs, which are oh-my-god heavy while being angular and repetitive, that gives the whole package a concrete tone and feel that’s very unique.
The Soft Moon - Criminal By this point, The Soft Moon should need no introduction, he’s one of the premiere acts of modern darkwave/post-punk. This go ‘round sees his formula augmented with some more industrial and psychedelic flourishes.
Thou - Magus You’ve already heard all about “The Summer Of Thou” in 2018, these NOLA avant-sludge masters released three EPs, a split, and this: their magnum opus all within the span of several months. That’s a lot to take in, hell, this album is a lot - almost impossible to take all in one sitting, but they’re really operating in a league of their own at this point. It’d be one thing if it was the heavy music alone: but knowing the songs grapple with deeper issues of existentialism, individuality, and philosophy make it resonate deeper.
Tomb Mold - Manor Of Infinite Forms Grimy deathmetal with no novelties or frills outside of nostalgia for the glory days of deathmetal’s arrival in the late 80s/early 90s. This notion is further cemented with an absolutely NAILED production job.
Unravel - Eras Of Forfeit Beefy, thick death metal that sees these Aussies meld the Swedish HM-2 sound with added muscle and heft. Muscular grooves, impressively burly vocals, and tempo changes galore. Plus, with 11 songs in 23 minutes, there’s absolutely no filler to be found. Also that Dan Seagrave cover art is FIRE.
Honorable Mentions:
Dead Can Dance - Dionysus
Cold Cave - You & Me & Infinity
Daniel Avery - Song For Alpha
Mausolei - Horizont and Vorposten
Cryogenic Husk #82 - Best Of 2018
1) Holygram - She’s Like The Sun

10) Convulsing - Beaten
11) Jesus Piece - Punish
