“Give me another chance, Wanda,” Y/n pleaded as the two walked through the compound late for their meeting. It was 8:30 am. The group was instructed to arrive for the mission briefing at 8:15 am. Wanda barely had time to brush her teeth before she ran out of her room and immediately bumped into the last person she wanted to speak to, her ex. 

“Shut it, Y/n.” Y/n sighed as she kept her mouth shut. The headache coming from drinking too much poured into her head like a tsunami. “I blame you if we get the short end of this mission.” Before Y/n could respond, the two finally arrived at the conference room.

“You’re late.” Steve deadpanned. “We-” 

“No excuses Y/n, you and Wanda are on backup duty. Stay in the quinjet until asked.” Wanda groveled silently as she was handed the mission file by Natasha. Y/n stood behind Bucky and peered over his notes. 

“This was going to be a long day,” Y/n thought. 

“Give me another chance, Wanda,” Y/n begged through the phone. She was walking through the bustling streets of downtown New York to find Wanda. The girl had mysteriously gone out for the night and decided to tell no one about her location. This was nothing new to the team, even Natasha knew it was something that Wanda did to feel better about herself after their breakup.

But tonight felt different to Y/n. It was already past midnight and Wanda hadn’t come back home. Y/n called again only for the phone to go straight to voicemail for the 10th time tonight. “Watch where you’re going asshole!” 

“Sorry,” Y/n mouthed as she walked away. Realistically, Y/n knew that Wanda could handle herself even if she was impaired, her magic subconsciously protected her in situations like this. But the worry that pitted her stomach told her otherwise. 

“Where could you be?” Y/n thought out loud. Looking around the surrounding buildings, Y/n’s eyes settled on the Chrysler building. Like a light bulb, a switch flipped in her head. Running to the nearest empty alleyway, Y/n called for her suit and flew to the top of the building. 

In all her glory there was Wanda lying on the edge of the Chrysler building. Her cheeks were flushed as she held the near empty bottle on her stomach. The remainder of the six-pack lay waste on the floor. Wanda didn’t know how much time had passed since she started drinking. The near numbness in her lips indicated that it had been a while. 

Y/n landed with a soft thud, not wanting to scare Wanda off.  She checked her watch and it was already 2:00 am, a new record for Wanda. Leaving her suit behind, Y/n walked slowly to Wanda. Once she was within arm's reach, Y/n securely held her by the waist. 

“What are you doing here?” Wanda didn’t have to turn her head to know who it was. The feeling of sensing Y/n was something she used to enjoy. Now it was just a constant reminder of their failed relationship. 

“I’m here to take you home. It’s late Wanda.” Wanda sighed as she let Y/n gently grab the bottle from her hand. “Why can’t you just leave me alone?”

“You’re drunk Wanda.” 

“And you’re the asshole that left me.” Y/n ignored the insult thrown her way and picked Wanda up bridal style. “You’re gonna get hypothermia if you stay out here.” Y/n looked down at Wanda when she didn’t respond back. The brunette was already deep asleep as she nuzzled her head into Y/n’s chest. 

When Wanda woke up the next day, she refused to ask who took her home. Not when her thoughts already lingered about Y/n. 

“Give me another chance, Wanda,” Y/n whispered as she held Wanda’s hand. The brunette was dressed in an all-black skin-tight dress with high heels. She even put make-up on to feel better for the occasion. 

“You don’t deserve me.” Wanda walked away from Y/n and to the open elevator. Their eyes met again as the doors closed. Once she was fully out of sight, Wanda let a tear fall. “Why must you make it so hard for me to move on?” 

“Give me another chance-”

“Are you serious right now?” Wanda was in disbelief. “You. Fucked. Up.” She poked at Y/n’s chest. “Not me. And now you want me to seriously give you another chance?

“I understand that I fucked up-”

“No! You don’t! You broke up with me and left me to sort things out by myself. And cowardly enough, you went on a mission just to avoid talking to me.”

“Let me explain-”

“Explain? What is there to explain? I’ve begged and begged so many times before for you to tell me the truth. Each time you would shut me out and disappear. You never had the decency to tell me anything. But now when it’s convenient for you, I suddenly am the bad guy for not hearing you out. “

Wanda shoved Y/n out of her room. “All you did was make me wonder why I ever deserved that type of treatment when all I ever did was love you.”

“I’m sorry I keep messing things up,” Y/n groaned. The bruises on her chest made it hard to breathe or maybe it was the blood she could taste in her mouth. Regardless, everything hurts. “I wasn’t really thinking when I broke up with you back then.” 

Wanda ignored the burning feeling in her chest as she continued to rip apart the indestructible chair Y/n was cuffed to. “Are you serious right now? Y/n please use your fucking smart brain and help me get you out.” 

Wanda concentrated back on her powers to try and rip apart one of the steel cuffs. When the cuff didn’t give, Wanda stopped in frustration. “Why isn’t this working?” 

“‘Cause they knew you would be the one to get me.” Wanda furrowed her brows, not understanding who “they” was. “What are you talking about?” 

A loud pitch echoed through the chambers as the intercom turned on. “Countdown commences. Ten minutes till detonation.” The large screen behind Wanda flickered as the countdown was displayed in bright red. 

“Tony! I need you to locate the bomb. Y/n is stuck in this chair and I can’t get her out of it.” Wanda looked around the room once more but the lack of controls and buttons made it feel useless. 

Wanda hurried back to Y/n at the sound of her coughing up more blood. “What did they do to you dekta?” Y/n tried her best to grin, not wanting to show Wanda how much pain she was in. 

“You’ve done worse to me in training,” Y/n joked but none of it sat right with Wanda’s conscience. Using her shirt, Wanda wiped part of the blood that came out. She used her free hand to locate the source of the bleeding. 

“Wanda,” her green eyes focused on the brown eyes she loved. “I think I’m dying.” 

“Shh shh - don’t talk like that dekta.” Wanda located a small tear inside Y/n’s organs and used her magic to pause the bleeding. “We’re gonna get you out of here.” 

“I’m sorry for all the times I’ve failed you.” 

“What-”

“And I’m sorry for leaving you.” 

“Now is not the time-” 

“We’re out of time my love.” Y/n glanced to the screen in front of them. Only five minutes left before it detonated. 

“Any updates Tony?! We have five minutes left!” Wanda yelled. 

“I’m trying my best here. We’re swarmed!”

“Wanda - I need you to listen-”

“No!” Wanda declared. She looked at Y/n with a deadly stare. “Stop acting like that - like this is our last chance.” Wanda refused to believe that the world would be cruel to let the love of her life slip past her. Not when they haven’t sorted everything out. Not when things are still bad. 

“I love you,” Y/n whispered with a tired smile. Wanda could feel Y/n’s energy draining by the second. The longer she went without medical attention, the slimmer her chances of survival grew. She gripped on Y/n’s shirt, trying her best to keep her cries at bay. 

“Don’t-” Wanda sobbed as tears fell down her face. “This isn’t how I wanted you to confess. I deserve a confession where dying isn’t involved.” 

“One minute remaining,” the announcement said. Y/n’s eyes started to droop. Her consciousness was slipping by the second. Wanda cupped Y/n’s cheek and lightly tapped her face. 

“Wake up dekta.” Y/n slowly opened her eyes. “Ask me again.” 

“What?” 

“Tell me you want me back.” Wanda pressed her forehead against Y/n’s. “Tell me to give you another chance and I will. I’ll give you all the chances in the world so just ask me.” 

“Wanda…will you give me another chance my love?”

The world slowed down as the bomb deep under the building blew up. Wanda could feel the blast reaching to them as she created a magic barrier that surrounded her and Y/n. And as it continued to explode around them, Wanda leaned in and kissed Y/n hoping that the last thing the dying girl felt was her love.

According to an article that ran in the New York Times: one out of every 40 New Yorkers will have a run in with a Superhero in the time they live here.

That might not sound like much, but considering that nearly 8.5 million people live in this city, it adds up to a lot of people. In fact, most in your friends circle have their own anecdotal story to tell.

I ran into Tony Stark at the Brandy Library and he asked me for my phone number. Bit of a sleaze but he bought our whole table a round of drinks.

Captain America landed on my Fiat on Manhattan Bridge. He dented the roof, but he was very polite about it.

Daredevil was hanging out at the fire escape ladder above the Meatball shop. Gave me tips on what to order.

It's nothing short of a miracle that having lived in this city for as many years as you have that this is the first time you've had a Supes encounter.

It'll be a great story to tell at parties. You fell out of the Chrysler building and were rescued mid-air. It blows all the other stories out of the water. Though, you'll probably leave out the part where he wished he'd left you to die.

You stare blindly at your computer screen. There are endless rows of cells on your excel sheet no matter how far you scroll. Uninterrupted numbers and reference codes for insurance claims that are waiting for your attention. But the numbers and letters all blend into an indecipherable sludge soup. All you can focus on is: 'I should've let you fall.'

Heat prickles your cheek, as you replay his words in your head.

What the hell.

That was entirely unnecessary.

You didn't deserve that.

Over the course of the last 24 hours, you've played the scene on an endless loop in your head, until the memory is worn and scratched like a used up VHS tape.

Did you do something wrong? You must've. Who has ever heard of a Superhero treating a civilian in this manner? You’re just a hapless innocent bystander who fell out of a building due to a supervillain battle they started. To blame it on you and then call it a mistake. Isn't that something a supervillain would do?

Gritting your teeth, you feel yourself seething of the memory of the windows next to you breaking and shattering out of nowhere as a bird-person villain with mechanical wings tumbled past you. Next thing you knew you were tumbling out the window. 

And then he saved you.

Did he mean to save someone else? Is that why he was so annoyed? But, you didn't see any other people falling from the building on your way down.

You replay the memory. Again.

The looming silhouette of his towering frame over yours as he sneered down at you.

He looked at you like he knew you. Like you had offended him with your mere existence. But you don't understand how. You've never met him before. Never met anyone who looked even remotely like him. You would've remembered a man with red eyes, they're not exactly common. Plus, you don't think you've ever met someone quite so tall. Your neck hurt with the angle you had to crane just to look at his face.

What could you possibly have done in your lifetime to piss off a Superhero you've never met before?

For that matter what Superhero is he anyway? You think back at the dark navy suit clinging onto every inch of skin, embellished by that bright angry red in the emblem of a spider.

Spider-man... 

Except Spider-man is known to be a swell guy with a great sense of humor. Not a rude asshole.

Aren't his colors inverted too? You pull up the browser on your screen and google "spiderman outfit". There's over 800 million hits. In all of them Spiderman's suit is primarily red with blue embellishment.

Whoever the guy is, you don't think he's your friendly neighborhood Spiderman that every New Yorker knows and loves.

With a hapless sigh, you click aimlessly on your screen, trying to look busy at work for the next twenty minutes until you can go on your lunch break. You go through the motions of your soul sucking tasks. Tagging each insurance claim into one of the following categories: approved/rejected/further missing information required.

Peering over your cubicle wall to the wall of windows, you spy the section that has been zoned off since yesterday. The broken window you were knocked out of has already been replaced, but there's still shattered glass and debris nearby.

Your stomach drops, the phantom sensation of the ground beneath you giving way. For a brief second you swear you can feel the weightlessness of soaring through the skies without anything catching your fall.

You stand up from your desk, solid ground meeting the soles of your feet to remind you where you are. 

The office.

There's a monotone drone of workers all around you grumbling and sighing just as unhappily. The quiet tip-tapping of keyboards of the working masses.

Is this the life you managed to escape death for?

Is this it?

It's kind of sad isn't it? You nearly died and lived to tell the tale, only to return to a life so unremarkable your brain didn't deign it necessary to provide you with any highlights (cause there are none).

The most exciting thing that has happened to you the whole of this year was being insulted by a grumpy superhero. The most you've wanted to live was during that span of ten seconds when you were falling out of a building to your death.

You glance at your clock, still 15 minutes before noon. You log out of your desktop anyway.

You barely make it across the street from your office. The light is green as you cross Lexington Avenue when the screeching noise of tires tears down the street and rips through your eardrums.

A yellow taxi hurtles towards you at full speed. Through the car window separating you, the cab driver is staring up at you with wide-eyed horror. In that fraction of a second before the hard metal is going to collide and shatter every bone in your body, you only have one thought: Oh god, this is going to hurt.

Life doesn't flash before your eyes. All you see is the familiar blur of shiny blue and red.

Go figure that's the only moment extraordinary enough for your brain to think it's worth replaying before you die.

There's a blunt and forceful shove to the side of your ribs. Softer than you would've imagined a two tonne vehicle slamming into you would be. It doesn't hurt. It reminds you of that time you played football with your cousin and he body slammed you to the lawn. You've heard about this phenomena, the brain will try to protect itself by going unconscious if the pain is too extreme.

But there's no bright light, when you open your eyes all you see is the familiar shiny blue fabric.

A firm weight wraps around your shoulders, and you recognize this, the feeling of being held as you're pulled into their solid chest. There's not enough time for you to look up, you're slammed onto the ground, the solid warmth wrapped around you, absorbing the fall.

The pressure wrapped around you shifts then lifts away entirely. When you open your eyes for a second time, there’s no one there holding you. 

There's no one else there with you. Just the standstill traffic of cars and pedestrians gawking at you.

A concerned woman runs over to you, bending down to help you up on your feet. "Are you okay? That car came out of nowhere."

Your legs feel unsteady, wobbling as you put weight on it to stand up. 

“I’m fine, I think,” you respond, and look down on yourself. There are no scrapes, just a bit of dust on your work-attire from traffic.

"You're so lucky, Spiderman was there to save you."

You blink up at the woman in dazed confusion and it takes your brain a few seconds to process what she's telling you.

Spider-man...

In your mind's eye the flashes of blue and a vivid red invades your vision. It wasn't just your life flashing you by. Not just a figment of your imagination.

He was here. He saved you. (Probably not) Spider-man saved you (again).

A wave of gratitude washes over you. You take back every unflattering thought you had about the man not five minutes ago. Rude? Would a rude man save you, not once but twice in one day? No, of course not, you probably just misunderstood him, or misheard. After all, if he truly regretted saving you, he wouldn't have done it a second time... right?

When you get back at your desk, there's a post-it tacked to your computer screen, with an angry scrawl of a handwriting.

'Look BOTH ways before crossing!!!!!'

You stare at the note, and the way the word "both" is capitalized and aggressively underlined.

Rude.

The universe is out to kill you. You're sure of it.

They say that death comes in threes after all. So no one can blame you for being a little bit on the edge after you've gone two for two within the time span of 24 hours.

You stay away from windows in tall buildings. You look both ways, twice, before crossing the street. You try to go straight home from work the minute you clock out from work, turning down any and all initiations with friends to go out after out of precaution. It's just not worth the risk.

And for a while it seems to work. For a while, there are no more incidents. A week goes by and your nerves start to settle and you are lulled into a temporary sense of security before it all goes to shits.

A ceramic flower pot on a windowsill tumbling off the sixth floor of a brown house by Chelsea that would have dropped on your head and split your skull if someone hadn't bumped into you from behind that you weren’t able to catch sight of.

A piece of scaffolding that comes loose and falls from a construction site in West Village as you happened to walk past, and would have been crushed under if you weren’t tackled away at the last second by someone who fled the scene before you could thank them.

A hot dog cart runs amok, hurtling downhill towards you between 184th and 190th street in Manhattan when the cart suddenly out of nowhere, against the very laws of physics like it’s being pulled by an invisible force and changes direction mere inches in front of you, hurtling through the air and crashing into the windows of a bodega instead.

Each and every incident leaves you with an ever growing sense of paranoia that this cannot be explained away by being merely pure bad luck. There are cosmic forces at force that clearly want you dead.

On Thursday, there are leftover cupcakes from a client conference. Mary, the secretary in your team, boxes up four of them for you and tells you to take them with you, because, "you've had a rough week, toots."

It’s not a flattering assessment of you, but when you see your own reflection in the mirrors of the office toilets, you can’t help but think it’s an accurate one. You look rough. Eyes bloodshot with deep furrowed lines underneath. Your face is gaunter than you remember seeing it too. 

You take the cupcakes. 

It's the first good thing that has happened to you all week, and as small of a comfort it is, you take it as a win.

You eye the box from your desk the rest of the day, squirreled away in your tiny cubicle. You are determined not to eat one while at work. Because you'll be damned if Matt from accounting catches a whiff of your cupcakes and asks you to share one with him. You want to properly savor them in the comfort of your home at the end of the day.

But as often is the case when you have something to look forward to, the seconds, minutes and hours tick away with a reluctant drag as if time itself knew you wanted the day to end faster and decided it'd be fun to flip yet another cosmic middle finger in your direction. 

When it's finally time to end work, you get off your chair so forcefully it knocks it to the floor. You are practically jogging through the lanes of cubicles to get to the elevator, and nearly smack the security guard on the other side with how hard you swing open the front door. 

It's pouring outside, which, of course it is. You take off your jacket and cover your cupcake box with it, because you're not going to let the universe ruin the one good thing you've got going for you this week, as you run towards the station.

The moment you step into the damp and sticky station any remaining sense of joy in you evaporates. There's a hoard of tourists swarming the subway paying no attention to their surroundings. Tourists wearing their caps and backpacks and wheelies knocking over a 'Caution Wet Floor ' sign as they gather in a throng in front of the subway map, blocking the way as you hear the train approach.

It's not that big of a deal. A train comes every two to five minutes, and if you miss this one, you'll just get on the next one. It's not the end of the world. Logically, you know that. Emotionally and spiritually however, the world around you has just taken a little bit too much from you for you to concede to this minor little loss.

You are going to make this goddamned train.

Taking a determined step forward, you shoulder and push your way through the throng of people to fight your way to the front of the track.

You push a little too hard. Your feet skid across the slippery tiles, leg buckling from your own weight and you lose control, tumbling forward.

In your peripheral view there's a blinding light approaching. There's wind beating the sides of your face, and you can hear the screeching metal of the train right next to you. Your foot drops into empty space and you are falling into the tracks. 

Oh god why...

Why?

You just want to live.

The cupcake box flies out of your grip, splattered somewhere across the front pane of the train. There's a hard tug on your shirt as an invisible force you cannot see yanks you back, hard.

Your head whips back and for a fraction of a second, there are crimson eyes staring back down at you, you blink and then it's gone.

You land on your ass with a bruising force to your tailbone with a bone-breaking thud. The subway whizzes by with a demonic roar past you, inches from where you're sprawled on your ass on the dirty tiles of the subway station.

In front of your feet, there's a long streak of white frosting trailing down from your feet to the tracks of what looks like a crime scene.

Maybe it's the stress. Maybe you've just had a bad night of sleep (after many successive bad nights with little to no sleep). But something in you breaks at the sight of the frosting smeared across the dirty subway tiles.

Your eyes sting with exhaustion. Chest drawing in tight with a crumbling ache that makes you want to curl up on the cold tiles. You're just so tired.

There are people around you staring at you. No one in their right mind who lives in New York would sit on the floor of the subway.

But your legs are heavy and numb. You can’t move from the spot. Everything tastes like bile. You try to swallow and force it back down but it's no use, your throat has swollen shut. Your cheeks run wet and you press your palms to your eyes to make it stop but that only seems to make it worse. Snot runs down your nose and drips down your wrist. You're crying and you don't know how to stop.

Is this the rest of your life?

In the morning, you wake in your bed with a sore ache that gnaws at your bones. Swollen eyes and a soreness that scratches the lining of your throat.

Your back hurts, and as you try to turn to your side to get out of bed a sharp pain surges up along your entire spine.

Fuck.

It's too bright. The sunlight is offensive. It stings your eyes and makes you sick to your stomach. You only have vague memories of how you made it back home. Feet shuffling through the subway in a daze like the walking dead.

God is that what you are? A dead man woman walking?

You crane your head and catch a glimpse of your clock on the bedside table. 9.13 You're late for work. But that's mind as well, you don't have it in you to make it in.

What's the point anyhow? You hate that place.

Besides, if the subway on the way over doesn't finish off the job this time around, then eventually a taxi will. Failing that the universe is probably going to send over a ninja assassin rat from the subway to come after your life.

There's a soft breeze coming in from the open window that grazes the back of your neck and you turn your head towards it. All you can see from your window is the brick wall of the neighboring building. Even though your apartment is on the sixth floor, you can't see a speck of the New York skyline.

Still the breeze is nice, though you don't remember opening the window last night. You never usually do. It is silly and paranoid. No human robber could possibly climb up your six storey building just to climb into your window and rob you. If they could, they’d find that there isn’t much to rob in your apartment, the most valuable thing you own is a complete Le Creuset Cookware set. 

Your eyes glaze over your work tote bag on the floor next to the window, drifting upwards and spot the pink box sat on the window sill and you stop. 

You didn’t put that there. 

You sit upright in your bed, setting your feet to the floor and force yourself to leave your bed as you pad over to the open window.

It's a fancy looking thing. Baby pink, and chiffon ribbon on its side. Wrapping your pinkie around it, you tug it loose. You perch your thumb against the corner of the lid when you stop.

It's not another one of the universe's assassination attempts is it? You're not going to open it to find a bomb ticking down are you?

You hesitate for another moment, taking a deep calming breath before you gather the courage to finally lift the lid. Inside, there is a gorgeous display of cupcakes adorned with white and pink frosting, topped with strawberries, chocolate shavings and on two of them there's mini macarons.

Way fancier than the day old Costco cupcakes you'd lost yesterday.

Picking up one, you take a bite. The frosting is light and zesty. The refreshing lemon melts on the tip of your tongue as the buttery cream floods your mouth with the rich flavor. It's the best thing you've ever tasted.

Lifting the box, you check the sides of it to see if there's any note left behind, but there's none.

Gladis Bakery. It's from a bakery you've never heard of before. When you google the name the place is outside of New Jersey, 58 minutes away and you would need to take a subway then switch to a tram.

There's no note attached, but you don't need one. The list of candidates who would be physically able to climb up six floors up the bricks of your apartment building to leave cupcakes on your window isn’t a long one. 

Something warm blooms in your chest at the thought, and your fingers linger on the top of the box, savoring the taste of lemon and sugar still lingering on your tongue.

You put your head out the window, not sure what you're expecting to find but find yourself disappointed all the same when there's nothing there. No people in the quiet street below, and nothing unusual above.

"Thank you for uhm... saving me,” you say into the silence with nothing but the traffic noise below to answer you. 

 “And the cupcakes," you add. 

There's no reply.

Gambling is something that's never held much appeal to me. First, you usually have to leave your house. Then, you go to a special building for gambling and interact with other people. This is all so that they can take your money and explain that it was because you lost this overly-complicated game that was meant to take your money.

Sure, I might only have this opinion because I was lucky enough to lose all the time. If I had won big my first time out, I'd be hooked for life, chasing that high forever. Instead, I lost my twenty dollars, got yelled at when I tried to take a free shrimp cocktail anyway, and had to reimburse the valet for the rat that bit him when he tried to park my car. What a scam. It was a chipmunk.

The more I think about it, though, the more I realize that I might actually have a gambling compulsion. Sure, it's not organized, nor is it at a fancy casino. No government agency is going to take out an ad against buying several decrepit 1970s Chrysler products with perfectly good money, and then seeing how far I can drive them before they crumble into a cloud of rust at highway speeds. That's probably because they're losers with no imagination, and don't understand the rush that beating the odds entails. What's the moral here? If you have to work at it, then it's not a game and can't be gambling?

Don't worry, I can quit any time I want to. There's a Rent-A-Wreck near my house, and at any point in time I can simply go over there, hand them some money, and then drive a perfectly good five-year-old Chevrolet Malibu to my appointments, like a coward.

Doing so, however, would be silly. Sure, I've been on a cold streak for reliability lately, and I've had to walk home a lot, but my luck is sure to turn around soon. I've got a plan. If I can just get this one piece of the front subframe welded back together, and nobody cuts in front of me and makes me have to use my brakes, then I'll be good to go to work all week long!

Suptober day 1 - The Liminal Moment

Dean's managed to completely screw up his back. Bobby sends him... somewhere?

The pain isn't getting any better.

Okay, understatement.

The pain is getting worse every day. The last couple of mornings it had hurt so much just to get out of bed that there had been tears in his eyes by the time his feet were on the floor.

He'd manged to torque himself somehow, moved in exactly the wrong way by half an inch a few weeks ago, and something in his lower back had seized and squeezed and it hasn't let go since. What started as a sharp but localized ache has spread, more and more of his muscles going into spasm as he's held himself in increasingly awkward ways in search of relief. At this point his entire left side, kneecap to earlobe, is a hot line of agony, centered on a spot near his kidney that feels like a rusty rebar's been shoved straight through it.

But Dean's no wimp, and he's no whiner, either. No matter how bad he hurts he's showing up for work every day, putting in the hours, pulling his weight. Maybe he's not too fast on his feet right now, shuffling from car to car on the shop floor like somebody's decrepit grandpa, but he's still covering the floor. He's got a lifetime of experience with suffering in silence, after all, and nobody needs to know his business except him.

He's hunched crookedly over the engine of a '93 Chrysler LeBaron when Bobby yells for him, “GODDAMMIT DEAN!!” cracking through the shop so loud and so unexpected that he immediately straightens up on reflex. The sudden movement brings pain so intense he's briefly nauseated. His eyesight swims, and for a few seconds he worries he's about to pass out. By the time he feels steady again his boss is standing in front of him, looking equal parts irritated and worried.

“Boy, what's gotten into you lately?” he asks gruffly. “You look like hell, and you've been actin' like you're half-dead for days. You sick or somethin'?”

Dean tries to play it cool, but as he reaches to lean on the LeBaron's bumper a tremor in his hand betrays him. Busted. He grits his teeth and fesses up. “Kinda threw out my back a week or two ago. Pain keeps getting worse an' worse. I didn't mean for it to affect my job, though. I'm sorry if–”

Bobby cuts him off with an impatient gesture. “Y'ain't got nothin' to apologize for, son. You're more than just a shop hand to me, you know that.” He pulls off his grimy trucker cap, runs a hand through his thinning hair, and sighs. “You gotta take better care of yourself, Dean. You ain't nineteen any more. God knows none of us are.” He turns to his left and calls, “Garth, come take over on this Chrysler.”

“What? No!” Dean tries to block his lanky coworker's access to the engine, but Garth's got the advantages of height, reach, and a functioning muscular system and Dean can't even slow him down. Bobby tugs him carefully toward the office door. “It's fine, I can still work!” he protests.

“Not today you can't,” he says. “Go wash your hands, and then I want you to head on over across the street.”

Dean looks out through the open doors of the garage bay and across the two-lane blacktop that runs by Bobby's shop. There's a tiny strip mall on the other side of the road: four bland storefronts and an Italian restaurant. “You... want me to go... pick up a pizza?” he guesses.

His boss brings his hand up like he's about to dole out one of his trademark slaps to the back of his mechanic's head. Then he seems to think better of it and stops himself with a huff. “Try two doors down from the pizza place, idjit.” He gives Dean's shoulder a gentle shove. “Wash up and go. I'll call ahead. By the time you get yourself dragged across the way there'll be somebody waitin' for ya.”

Aching, dazed, and confused, Dean complies. It takes him a good five minutes to shamble his way up to the cheery yellow door he's been directed to. The sign above it declares this place to be The Liminal Moment and Dean has no idea what the hell that's supposed to mean. He turns the knob and walks inside as a collection of small bronze bells tinkle above his head.

He finds himself in a generic waiting area – a couple of chairs, a small table with some magazines, a reception desk (currently unmanned). There's an assortment of potted plants on the desk and the windowsills, and a small electric fountain burbling in the corner. The walls are painted a softer shade of the door's yellow. Behind the desk, someone has stuck up one of those cutesy inspirational stick-on decals. It reads “Honor the space between no longer and not yet – Nancy Levin”.

Dean still does not know what this place is or why he was sent here.

“I'll be right with you,” calls a rough voice. A few moments later a breathtakingly beautiful man strides in to the room with a gummy smile and a “Hello, Dean.”

Off balance and befuddled, Dean offers a limp wave in response.

The man continues. “I just got off the phone with Bobby. He says you're in a great deal of pain?”

“Yeah, I, uh, fucked up my back? What is this place, man? Bobby told me to walk over. Why am I here?”

“Oh, I'm so sorry, we're doing this all out of order. Welcome to The Liminal Moment. My name is Castiel. I'll be your masseur today.”

i will always stand by toyota and honda as good brands to default to. it’s like a meme at this point how reliable they are. especially toyota, whatever you need out of a car, toyota (or lexus, same company) probably has a version that will go forever while staying cheap to maintain and relatively hassle-free, especially if you don’t know much about cars. the default is the corolla. honda civics and accords are also up there, and hondas in general tend to be pretty solid, just less consistently than toyota. mazdas are also pretty solid, as are 90s volvos (though with these when problems do come up they tend to be pricy to fix) some mid to late 2000s and 2010s hyundais, 90s and EARLY 2000s saturns, and 90s subarus

the thing with cars though is that they’re only as reliable as they are well maintained. toyotas and hondas can usually take a bit more neglect than most but they have their limits. a friend of mine just bought a 90k mile toyota corolla from one of its best generations (she got a ‘98) and it’s already presented with a bunch of weird random problems. they are complex machines and things can and will eventually break. conversely, sometime the most notoriously unreliable cars will go forever - a friend of mine got a trouble free near 20 years out of a chrysler pt cruiser because it was babied

all that to say, i highly recommend a toyota or honda, but finding a car with a good maintenance history in good shape is more important than anything. if you can, bring it to a mechanic or if you have a friend who’s mechanically inclined bring them with you to check a potential car out before you buy it, assuming you’re buying used. even if it’s from a dealership, unless it’s from an official manufacturer dealership that’s the best way to guarantee something’s gonna be in the best shape for the longest time

Museum Kids

I grew up in a bygone era—when school field trips were plentiful and adventurous. My mother worked 80 hour weeks on film sets, including Fraturday schedules. So, she lacked the time and energy to take us places like that.

School took us all over. Aquariums. Historical forts. Islands protected from human involvement. State Zoos. Amusement Parks. Disney World. Museums. State Fairs. And this was public school in the 90's!

My kids have the benefit of a mother and father with (relatively) normal hours who are teamed up to raise them. I love museums, so I started taking them in infancy. Not just to Children's Museums... but to art museums. And, guess what? They love them.

I remember the first time I took all three to Norfolk alone to visit the Chrysler Museum of Art. My Littlest was not quite 2, and the twins were nearing 5. I remember gripping their hands, hoping it was a good idea.

At one point, my Middle child released my hand and ran away from me. I panicked, a moment. He is Autistic and prone to wandering. But, he ran only a few feet and planted himself in front of a frame on the wall. In a room full of paintings, he found the only Degas.

"That's beautiful," he breathed as he stood and marveled.

So, rather than chide him for running off, I told him a bit about the painting and artist. He listened, took my hand back in his, and we kept exploring.

This week, the Littles and Matthew (school teacher) are on Spring Break. It's tough for me because I still have to work while they are all home, but I shift my schedule so we can take outtings in the afternoon together.

Today, we visited that same museum for the first time in a bit. The children (now ages 6, 9 and 9) were enthused, especially taken by the Venetian Glass exhibit after we've been watching the show Blown Away.

The twins fell in love with a piece of art that allowed them to see one another instead of their own reflection, and decided together they wanted to stage this pose. Don't worry, they aren't touching the glass, but holding their hands close enough to complete the illusion.

Neither saw their own reflection... only each other. And as twins who each came from a different Fallopian tube and then affixed to the opposite positions (front and back) of my uterus, the mirroring seemed beautifully appropriate.

But the best moment for me was standing in the Modern Art wing with my Littlest looking at a massive piece on the wall covered in Mardis Gras beads and lots of color.

6yo: Mama? Do they have any Picasso? Me: They've had Picasso exhibits before, but I don't think they have any right now.

A woman walking by overheard me and gave me a quizzical look. She pointed behind me and uttered a single word: "Picasso".

There was a massive Picasso right behind me. After laughing at myself, the Littlest posed in front of it for a photo.

The children made little drawings to add to the collection on the wall, and we journeyed through so many beautiful pieces of art.

My Middle leaned against my arm as we walked, whispering the meanings he saw. Littlest cheered at the rainbow room of glass. And Eldest looked for everything that was new between our last visit and this one.

On the way out of town, we stopped at Doumars for grilled cheeses and ice cream for the Littles, then at Zeke's for poké bowls for the grownups.

It was a lovely afternoon. And I sit here in such awe that my Littles are museum kids. I hope they grow up to be museum grownups! One can hope, right?

House With Nearly 300 Classic Cars on 18 Acres Is One Rough Diamond For $400K! Everything Uou’ve Wished For, OR Your Worst Nightmare?

Owning a Home, a Garage, a Bunch of Land for Hooning on, and More Classic Cars than you can count is all our common dream. Well, if you can get a mortgage for the $400,000 property listed on Zillow right now, that dream can be your reality. But like every dream, this one's gonna take work to realize, because boy is this place an unpolished gem.

Currently for sale in Canaan, New Hampshire near the Vermont border, this property is aimed directly at all of us. "ARE YOU A CAR ENTHUSIAST?" opens the ad, which is for the grounds of a defunct classic car boneyard called Parts of the Past. The 18-acre site is littered with close to 300 classics in varying conditions, some of them seemingly in good shape. Others... You'd better be up to date on your tetanus shots.

From what few photos of the cars there are, it looks like the majority are pre-1970 and mainly if not all American makes. I spy some old Chryslers, a DeSoto, and a Nash Metropolitan, but most are too distant to be instantly recognizable. A pile of doors suggests many may have been picked for parts already, so there's no telling how complete most of the cars are. Some may just be decaying shells, while others could be what auctioneers like to call "restoration opportunities."

Going by the surprising bounty at the overgrown former AMC dealer in North Carolina, more of them may be in good shape than we think. But even taking inventory of the cars on the lot and their condition would be a months-long process if it's not your full-time job. Whether you want to part them out to maximize your return on investment or liquidate it all, you've got a Sisyphean task ahead of you.

Even if you want to use the onsite garage to restore some, and enjoy the forested land for all it's worth, you're still gonna have to figure out what to do with the house. It's a one-bedroom, three-bathroom home that's sold as a "post and beam"-style affair. That may be overselling what looks like an incomplete major renovation, with exposed studs in almost every room and an almost totally unfinished bathroom. I've lived in a place like this, and it sucks even more than those Modern Farmhouse-style places your least interesting neighbor lives in.

Between the house and collection of unknown cars, it's hard to say whether this place is really worth $400,000. Is it more than the sum of its parts, or does it even add up to that in the first place? That's for people who get boots on the ground to decide. Me, I'd sooner take one running car and a livable house, but to each their own.

Destiel Month, 9 Nov.: Sunshine

He waved up at the leaves. "You're putting on a real show, huh, buddy?"

"Oh, hi, hey, heyyyy. There you are." 

Dean stumbled backwards over a multitude of hidden roots and a skiff of loose acorns and his back hit the trunk of an immense tree. One of those, um, maples or oaks. He looked up into the canopy and slid down onto his butt while staring up in breathless awe. After a minute, he remembered he was a creature dependent on oxygen and took a big, gulping breath.

He waved up at the leaves. "You're putting on a real show, huh, buddy?" 

The leaves seemed to return the wave, rippling to show their paler bellies as a breeze tossed the branches to and fro. 

"You'll be proud of me, Cas." Dean winked upwards. "I am just gonna sit right here with you and wait for Sam to show up. Don't keep moving around. That's what they tell Boy Scouts, right? And probably Girl Scouts too. No discrimination here, every kid deserves a chance to learn how to cook potatoes under burning embers or catch a fish using old shoelaces or whatever MacGyver shit they teach scouts these days." He snorted a laugh. "Probably something about how to sell more cookies by going viral on the YouTubes." 

An acorn fell out of one of the nearby trees and caught his attention as it bounced into the leaf litter covering most of the forest floor. He waited, in full suspense, as a gray squirrel came over and started scratching around in the leaves near where the acorn had landed.

"Good," he called out to the squirrel. "It's under there somewhere. Winter's coming."

He thought of something. "Hey, Cas. You ever finish the second season of Game of Thrones?" 

Spider web silk somewhere on his neck was driving him crazy. He scrubbed at himself for a few seconds and gave up.

"But anyway, Cas," Dean said. "We might be here a while. 'Cause my phone's crapped out and I don't exactly know where we left Sam. Somewhere around the creek? Or the stream that feeds into the creek?" Legs outstretched, he rubbed his boot heels in the leaves and enjoyed their crunchiness. "That rickety bridge that goes from one side of the ravine to the other?" 

After crumbling them in his hands, he tossed a few crispy leaves in the air; they floated around like confetti.

He looked up, up, up. Sunshine lit the canopy in gold, emerald, bronze, crimson, copper, peridot. Beyond that the sky was exactly the shade people meant when they said sky blue. Blue as jay feathers, blue as Cas's eyes.

All of Cas's eyes even, maybe.

"Cas, you're killing me here, man. It's too much. I could look at you all day and never figure out all these colors." Dean grinned and raised up his hands. "I don't know how you do it." He sighed, feeling dreamy and dazzled about his best friend. "You're gorgeous. And I don't wanna get in trouble for saying this, but you are not as tall as the Chrysler building. I mean, don't get me wrong, you are very taller. Taller than Sam for sure, which is what counts."

He let his hands drop to his lap. Oh, it was a nice day. Nice and cool. He and Cas were hanging out, he wasn't thirsty, he didn't need to pee, he hadn't given himself a heel blister, and he could still smell the smoke from the little fire by the entrance of that funky little shack, all the way out here in the woods. Mmm, such a spicy scent, like pine needles and something musty. Salty, like warm skin.

"I think," Dean said, "when we are back home and you are normal sized, we should–" A sharp pain stabbed him right above his eyebrow. "We should– Ow, fuck."

He squinted and rubbed his forehead with the heels of his hands. "Cas? Hey, do you think you could come down here now?" He recognized his voice growing fainter, as if keeping pace with the failing light. "Could you… Cas…?"

He awoke in a detonation of sunlight, concentrated down to the tips of Cas's fingers pressed against his temple. 

"Dean?" Cas was repeating his name, sounding frantic.

Dean opened his eyes to Cas's worried face mere inches from his, and Cas on his knees in the leaves. 

"Ohhhh. You're just a little guy again."

Cas's frown didn't evaporate but it did evolve. "What do you mean?" He put one hand on Dean's shoulder and tipped up Dean's chin with his other hand. "Your pupils are still very dilated."

"It's okay." Dean nodded. "Sam'll catch up to us eventually."

"Right here, dude." Sam appeared from nothingness, or possibly from behind a young birch, and squatted down beside Cas. "We gonna be able to walk him out of here?"

Dean squinted up at them. "I can walk."

"Yeah, but can you stand?" Sam grasped Dean's wrists and hauled himself and Dean to their respective feet. 

"Oooooof." Dean swayed, or Sam swayed, or the trees swayed. There was a lot of fucking swaying, was Dean's point.

Cas touched the crook of Dean's arm; the world righted itself instantly.

"Better?" Cas asked. He was standing too close as usual. His gaze was so piercing Dean nearly felt it pinch the back of his own skull.

"Better." A leaf the same hue as new pennies was caught in Cas's collar and Dean brushed it away, his fingertips grazing Cas's throat. Dean swallowed. "So, uh. I guess I'm the only one who got lost, huh?"

"Only for a few minutes," Cas said.

"Several," Sam muttered. "Almost an hour."

"And you took care of whatever the fuck was living in that shack?" Dean asked.

"He did," Sam said, tipping his head at Cas.

"It did not take much effort to obliterate the creature's attempts to lure you and probably devour you at a later date." Cas wore a modest expression. "Afterwards, you talking to me helped us pinpoint you." He looked around and up and down again at Dean. "We're quite far off the marked trail." 

He held Dean's gaze in a particular way – with tenderness, Dean realized.

Dean smiled softly at him. "Well, I wasn't worried. I knew you'd find me."

Cas smiled back, softly.

Sam rolled his eyes and moosed away in some direction, possibly bound for the aforementioned trail. Once he was many fallen logs away, he yelled back, "I'm leaving you both here if you're not at the car when I am."

Dean took Cas's hand in his own. It would be easier, after all, for them to not get separated again that way.

Straight outta Sunnyvale: Trailer Park Boys superfan replicates Ricky’s ride

A dedicated Trailer Park Boys fan has made an exact replica of an iconic car from the series and it’s turning heads around Halifax.

A 1975 Chrysler New Yorker, owned by the character Ricky, is like its own character in the Trailer Park Boys show and films, with transmission problems, a bad paint job, and a missing door.

“Sometimes there’s some jaws that drop, sometimes there’s people that are in such just disbelief this car is out there,” Mike Razberry said of his replica.

The car will even be used in a new Trailer Park Boys movie, which is currently in production.

“I actually had Mike Smith come up to me, he plays Bubbles. He was goin’ on, sayin' like, ‘Hey, we’re shooting this movie, it would be really awesome if we could use the car.’”

But is the car legal on the road? “Yes, 100 per cent.”

“I got brand new breaks, brand new tires, suspension – I’ve done everything,” Razberry said.

Razberry, a red seal mechanic from London, Ontario, said he used parts from five different cars to build it.

“I actually treated it like a complete, full restoration. So I had to have the trunk, the doors, the hood off. I took all the interior out,” he said. “I basically had the whole car ripped apart. I made it look like it was never the wrong colour, dyed the interior.”

Razberry even recreated all of the damage on Ricky’s car, using everything from bats to hammers.

“Some of the people at Canadian Tire might’ve looked at me little funny when I was ramming shopping carts into the side of it at one point,” he says.

Whatever road it travels, the car gets a lot of attention.

“I’ve got a lot of random people sometimes hopping in the car,” Razberry says. “I’m just like, ‘OK, I guess you’re here now, I’ll drive you around the block’… some stuff like that too. And I’m usually really good with the fans.”

The police keep him on their radar as well.

Pokécar story

Some of you may recall seeing pictures of this 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser that was modified to look like the Legendary Pokémon Lugia. Five of these cars were built to tour the United States to promote the then new video games Pokémon Gold and Silver editions. Even if you never saw this car in person, you more than likely saw it in a gaming magazine or in some other kind of promotional media.

Despite living in a small town located near a major city, I knew that I was never going to see this car in person. And even though one of these cars did indeed make a stop near where I lived, I never got to see it during the promotion.

Now, after this promotion concluded, you would have thought that Nintendo of America would have had these cars either destroyed or had their modifications removed before selling them second hand. But they actually ended up in the hands of private collectors (or at least one of them did).

See, despite thinking that there was no way I’d ever see one of these cars in my home town, in recent years I’ve caught glimpses of one driving up and down U.S. Route 12 in my home home town. There was a nearby resident that ran a small used games booth at the Volo Antiques Mall in Volo, IL that acquired one of these cars and drove it around from time to time.

I mean, it’s crazy for me to think about. Something that 11-year-old me would have been crazy about getting to see in person. And here it is almost 20 years later parked in the parking lot of the fast food restaurant I used to work for.

A few years back I got to speak with the owner of the car. He was on the verge of retiring due to health reasons. According to him this was the last of these cars still in existence. I’m not sure how true that story is. But last I checked this car was on sale on the Volo Auto Museum’s website. I’m not sure if it sold yet or what it’s ultimate fate is. Hopefully whichever private collector ends up owning this car takes good care of it and can work on restoring some of its modifications.
