Gojo Satoru and Iori Utahime/ contrast

This is not particularly a ship post, I don’t mind the ship either. (I just want to analyze them outside of romance). It's just that I was rereading Jujutsu Kaisen manga and had some drafts of characters that struck out to me, Utahime being one of them, Goodwill event reread made me appreciate so many characters even more, because this is the arc where all students and their stories are fleshed out. These characters really develop from what we have seen till now in the manga.

Utahime stood out me as a character the moment she was introduced during the first read itself (and no, it was not her scar), this time around I decided to investigate her character more, if it was any other series I probably wouldn’t have, but it’s Gege Akutami, his minor characters are written beautifully with unique roles.

As I mentioned before, she stood out, because we literally didn’t know any other teacher except Gojo in the story, the first teacher to be introduced in the story after Gojo was her. That was a matter of natural curiosity.

From her reactions to Gojo clearly showed she was not his fan. That was like pretty standard reaction to Gojo in vicinity, pretty much what we saw from other characters initial intro as well, Megumi finds him idiotic, Nanami doesn’t respect him, Gakuganji hates him, Shoko is apathetic, Ichiji is scared of him and called him lazy (Gege really made sure to tell the readers how annoying Gojo is lol). But since she was a fellow teacher, I wanted to know whether she aligns with Gojo or like Gakuganji, she is with the Higher ups or much like Shoko, doesn’t care about politics all together. Her shrine maiden outfit was interesting as well (it’s like Kikyo/Kagome from Inuyasha), so it was a wonder what her powers would be like.

Utahime, from her posture and speech pattens appears to be a very elegant woman. Her worry regarding Miwa, prioritizing safety of the students, being genuinely happy that they are safe, gave us the conclusion that she is a very responsible and good teacher to her students. Her alignment with Gojo was quickly answered as well since Gojo trusted her enough with a very important task and information. Gankuganji didn’t include her when he gave the task to Kyoto students to kill Itadori, I believe it was because either she wouldn’t agree to it, or convince her students not to follow him.

Her interactions with Gojo also stood out, since there are many characters who don’t respect Gojo but trust him, she is one of them. However, no one really went “out of character” like her and threw a cup of tea at him. Nanami thinks work is shit in general, he has same kind of distaste for Gojo that he had for his boss, Shoko doesn’t overtly react to anything, Ichiji generally has low self-esteem. All these characters don’t break out of their usual character patterns for Gojo, there reaction to his idiocracy is “in character”. Whereas Utahime, whom we have seen mostly as a responsible teacher and calm headed individual with quick thinking, breaks from her usual character with Gojo. Her dislike of Gojo is very genuine. I think that for a no-nonsense individual person like Utahime, she doesn’t take Gojo’s jokes well. For Gojo, its his usual jokes/remarks but for Utahime its him not respecting her. I mean one thing though, at least, Utahime doesn’t look for validation from anyone, she just demands respect as fellow sorcerer and senior, canonically she is not insecure, she doesn’t even hide her scar with mask or makeup shows how unbothered she is about it, I like that about her.

From what we know about the Past Arc of Gojo, Utahime is the only confirmed senior of Gojo, Getou, and Shoko. Mei Mei is most likely older than Utahime (mei calls Utahime by her given name, but uta addresses her as ‘Mei-san’, I think she is at least 3-4 years older than Utahime, personally). Kasukabe was not even mentioned in that arc so he is ruled out as well. Utahime is the only one that studied in the same school as them, and that’s why she is pretty close with Shoko. I think it's also the reason Gojo trusts her so much, since he has known her from the days of his youth. Gojo however doesn’t trust Mei Mei, its was quite clear in goodwill arc, but for some reason he does acknowledge Mei, and calls her with honorific ‘mei-san’. Mei is a woman who abuses her brother and uses him as part of her technique, she is apparently more respected by Gojo than a genuinely good human like Utahime. I think it’s because of mentality. (Gojo talks about the mental aspect with Megumi, sorcerers’ mentality plays a big role in their technique). Mei was ready to do anything to become strong (so that she can earn more money lol), I think Gojo respects that, whereas I don’t think Utahime prioritises strength before personal connection, which in Gojo’s eyes is weak and stuns her individual growth as sorcerer in his pov.

From her limited manga panels and Databook information, we can make out a few things.

• She is very smart and doesn’t believe in what is told to her without confirming it. When Gojo pointed out about the possibility of mole, she did not believe him without confirming it, when the attack in the event happened was when she acknowledged Gojo. She doesn’t react without enough information, as shown from the past arc with her mission with Mei Mei. I would conclude that her specialty is her smarts and level-headed thinking.

• She genuinely cares about the well-being of people around her , as shown with her students and how she wants Shoko to quit smoking. Unlike many jujutsu sorcerers, she is not individualist or selfish. Her kindness is also returned as every single one of her students loves her.

Is Utahime really weak?

A simple answer would be, NO. From this statement of Gege Akutami alone.

A sorcerer is expected to kill a curse of the grade they are assigned, so Utahime can solo semi-grade 1 curses all by herself.

If she had no offense at all, she would probably be grade-less like Shoko/Ichiji. Well, she is not. That means she fights, and she fights well. She has quick reflexes from what we have seen with her encounter with the dude with luck CT.

Also, she was quick enough to react during the attack from Kenjaku. She is working in Kyoto, the capital of the jujutsu world, and she is directly under the noses of higher-ups. The fact that she is a head teacher in Kyoto is itself intriguing, cause it’s not a position just anyone not worthy enough would have been appointed to. Higherups love traditional techniques, as mentioned by Panda during encounter with Haraki and Kirara.

I believe Utahime’s technique is one that higher-ups would love. They would not put someone with less knowledge or capability as in charge at all. It’s a big thing. She is not just a mere high school teacher. Her position is the same as Gojo in Kyoto.

Her not being grade one is irrelevant cause from what we know there are quite a number of hurdles, and corruption to be one, the promotions are rigged we already know that, Gojo paid Mei Mei to promote his students (they were capable students but that doesn’t mean he didn’t pay to get them the recommendation) plus she is a woman jujutsu world, that’s also a supposed thing that can hold her. She has survived till date is another proof she can hold herself, haibara died early (both him and nanami were unable to deal with a grade 1 curse back in the day, that’s how fast sorcerers die) She is a full fledge sorcerer. She takes missions and is not entirely out of frontlines either if we go by this panel from 0.5.

Gojo and Utahime contrast each other as individuals.

• Gojo’s relationship with his students is well, decent. He goes out of his way to teach and save strong ones (I can’t imagine him being a good teacher to, say, Momo or Miwa). He sent Inumaki and Panda to get beat up by Geto to piss off Yuta for his powerup, not so great move for a teacher. He recognises their struggles but at the same time doesn’t understand them that well. Save Yuuji and Yuuta, no one really respects him. Whereas Utahime’s students adore and protect her, they band together to solve their problems. They genuinely want the system to change and let their intent know about this during all the vs battels in Goodwill arc. Kyoto kids were really trying Tokyo kids to understand the problems in the system, but all of their common remarks were ‘I don’t care’.

(Well, Gojo sorry to tell you, your students are strong sure, but they don’t have the same goals as you, Utahime’s kids align with your goals more than your own, even though they are not as strong as you would like them to be.)

• Utahime’s CURSED TECHNIQUE was a delight. It can boost anyone within a zone, including herself. How it contrasts with Gojo, you might ask. Gojo is the strongest when he fights alone. Everyone else just drags him down. Whereas Utahime can help even someone like Ichiji cast a powerful barrier. Gojo’s technique literally separates him from the world, but Utahime brings them within her zone.

(I imagine the fellow sorcerers being happy to have Utahime around, since she will make everyone she is fighting with stronger, including herself. She is dragging no one down, and no one is left behind. However, in the case of Gojo, it is explicitly stated that fighting with him means dragging him down. Its almost like people feel weaker with Gojo around, and they get stronger with Utahime around.)

• This brings another contrast, individualism and collectivism. Utahime asks her students to get along, they even fight together, have each other’s back and are even emotionally connected to each other. Gojo tells Megumi that everyone dies alone, he is teaching his students to value individual strengths more.

(I am not saying one is right or wrong because that would be incorrect. The answer lies somewhere in between. Both things are important. Being individually strong will help the kids gain strength to fight others, and working with each other well will help them cover each other’s flaws.)

• Gojo Satoru is an enlightened individual, he has this entire moment where he realises that he is quite literally, factually with no hint of doubt, the strongest man alive. He realises his being after his fight with Toji. Utahime is a miko. A Shrine Maiden is messenger of kami, and were considered shamens back in Nara and Heian Periods of Japan in real life. Both of them are associated with God and something larger than life.

(It is not explicitly stated that Utahime is a Miko, but no one wears miko outfit for fun, it has meaning and history associated with it. Her outfit, the ceremonial Kagura, the usage of bells, gives us a confirmation that she is a miko ig.)

• Their connections with people are also something to look at. I can say for sure Shoko is canonically closer to Utahime than Gojo. She got so worried Utahime didn’t call for two days, Utahime sends her parcels to Shoko, she stopped smoking cause Utahime insisted. Whereas, she didn’t notice Geto going through his downfall, even if she did, she didn’t comment on this. She always stays away from Gojo drama. Utahime is genuinely more loved and is closer to people. Gojo is well, he is alone and lonely above everyone else.

(Again, not to say Gojo and Shoko are not close, Shoko is also one of the people Gojo trusts, but she is closer to Utahime. Gojo’s one of the character traits is the isolation he faces. That’s why the recent Gojo vs. Sukuna fight is not just about Sukuna filling his isolation. It’s also Gojo who finally found his truest equal.)

Utahime is everything Gojo is not and vice-versa. Gojo can do a lot of things others can, even use RCT, but if there is one thing that he absolutely can’t do, is what Utahime can(making others stronger). She can't do things Gojo can either. One can not call Utahime weak, just because she can’t do what Gojo can cause Gojo can’t do what Utahime can either.

The problem with these two is that, even though they have aligned goals, shared values, same path, and a lot of trust in each other. They DON'T respect each other. Utahime doesn’t respect Gojo, neither does Gojo respect Utahime. On paper/ in theory, their team is great if they work together. They complement each other, but Gojo is still stuck in his own head about his isolation. Granted, Utahime can not provide him the satisfaction of equal fight and equal strength, but why does she need to? She can help Gojo achieve goals alongside him with HER skillset. Watching Gojo and Utahime working together was a delight. The 200% hollow purple technique was amazing. But I wish we could have seen them as partners in work.

Overall, I wish more interactions of Utahime with her students if we can get any. Other than that, I am not expecting Utahime to appear again. But if she does, I hope Gege covers her teacher aspect and her investigator aspect more.

“You son of a-” Her speed increased- arms pumping and hair flying behind her as she charged him with all her effort. Gojo dived around another corner to escape when-

“Oof!” His face hit the closed door head on, the classroom locked. From the open window, he could see Mei Mei smiling at him, her hand holding the door shut. “Mei Mei! How much is she paying you?” He pulled at the doorknob, growing more frantic when Utahime appeared. “I’ll give you double the amou-AH!”

“GOTCHA!” He was grabbed, thrown to the ground and sat on in a matter of seconds. “You think you’re so funny putting ice down my back, huh? I’ll give you something to laugh at!”

“Wait- Wait, Utahime, spare me-hehehehehhehehehehhehe!” Gojo broke into a fit of giggles almost immediately as her hand weaseled past his collar, shoving the melting ice in her palm down his uniform. “Ihihihihihit’s coohohohohold!”

“Oh, is it now? Here- let me warm you up!” The hands at his neck dropped to his ribs, digging into them viciously. Gojo let out a loud cackle as he arched, feet kicking up a song against the ground as he squirmed. “Feeling better yet?”

“Uhuuhuhuhutihihihiihihime, pleahhahahahse! Geahhahahahaa, nohohohot the rihihihihbs!” He wheezed, weakly pushing at her hands. “Gohohohoho soohohohomewehehehhere ehehehehehlse!”

“First you pull a dirty trick, and now you wanna give me orders?” Utahime dropped her hands to his lowest ribs, making him scream. “You’re in for it now, you jerk! Get ready for my ultimate curse technique!”

reading jjk 223 and uta's ct reveal, it made me realize how utahime being able to increase other CE and her own is actually something HUGE...jjk lore has established so far that a way for sorcerers to only even increase their CE or CT power is only through "binding vows" which usually comes with compromise (nanamin overtiming, mei mei killing her birds) but now looking so far that Uta's CT allows increasing CE without the need of compromise seems very GROUND BREAKING....but idk idk maybe im missing something here, just wondering what you think??

Tbh I agree with you. Most jujutsushi are focused to do damage than utilities since the basic of their work is to exterminate cursed spirits, so strengths are so valuable. Shoko is precious in the term that she can recover - and she's so valuable that she rarely comes out to the frontline. Maybe it's the same with Utahime. Since her "value" lies on buffing teammates, she's a rare talent that doesn't go out to the frontline unless the situation calls for it.

she has two brothers : i've posted a family hc before stating that she was an only child but I changed my mind — her behavior suggests that she has at least one sibling. i believe utahime to be the oldest of three. her brothers , takuto & setsuko , are twins : born 6 years after utahime . they're both annoying and love to irritate / tease their older sister. ( the origin of her short fuse. ) her brothers are both jujutsu sorcerers, however, while utahime and takuto specialize in providing support, setsuko has a more powerful and combat ready technique. takuto is able to use his technique ‘ lullaby ‘ in different ways depending on the song he sings, in general definition he’s able to destabilize curses, cursed users, and even sorcerers if needed. setsuku has a technique that’s more power focused , dubbing the name banshee, you can infer what he's capable of.

sweet things : it's common knowledge that utahime doesn't like sweets, while that's true i do see her liking more organic sweets that comes from fruit, therefore my portrayal of utahime includes her favorite dessert being a fruit cheesecake , favoring a tangy sweet rather than the intense sweet that most candies and sweets have.

celestia : growing up, utahime was extremely fascinated with the moon and stars, and even to this day she can point out the stars and constellations when she's given the chance to look up and observe the sky and she'll likely start to ramble on about which ones are where and it gets her a little more out of that polite and proper shell she has a lot of the time.

THREE THINGS YOUR CHARACTER LIKES TO DO IN THEIR FREE TIME :

karaoke . . . she loves to sing in general , often taking time through her day to aimlessly sing or hum, obviously she sings in the shower ( if she has music playing ) . she's always loved to sing, always had a knack for it, and with a voice as pretty as hers ? you'd want her to.

drink ! . . . there's not much else i can say, utahime likes to drink and it's how she unwinds after her stress induced days supervising and all, she prefers beer over anything else but that doesn't mean she won't drink anything else. her tolerance is dependent on what type of alcohol / liquor it is.

read . . . since she was able to, she's loved to read. usually she's perched somewhere, working through one of the many books she's bought and put aside for later ( work keeps her busy ). her favorite genres include romance and action , sometimes fantasy. not to mention the word puzzles she likes to do, crosswords, word searches, etc.

PEOPLE YOUR CHARACTER LIKES / LOVES :

shoko : her closest friend , a confidant, shoko is a constant in her life that she doesn't have to worry about watering herself down for ( not like she really does anyway but regardless ) , she's completely herself around shoko and catch up no matter how long it's been inbetween their visits. she really loves shoko, is perhaps overly protective of her ( all her friends ) and i can see utahime actually telling shoko anything whereas she may hold herself back from telling mei mei anything that could be compromising .

yuuka iori : her grandmother , a woman that's raw, she always says whats on her mind and doesn't hold anything in, she has a more rancid sense of humor ( she's one of the fun old people ) . but she's always been closer to her grandmother.

Her students : yeah this is a bit of a cliché probably but ! Above all else, utahime loves her students as if they were her own children ! she ahs a special place in her heart for each of them, and applies herself accordingly but just like gojo, she'd be willing to die for those students.

TWO THINGS YOUR CHARACTER REGRETS :

her scar : she didn’t have to take the mission, she was already training to become a teacher vs. staying a active sorcerer, because her strengths laid in her ability ot easily teach others, often tutoring when she was at tokyo. her scar was given to her thanks to the special grade curse that had originally presented as a grade 2. she regrets how confident she had been going into the fight, knowing what she knows now, that she almost died killing it, she would have been much more careful, maybe she wouldn't have taken it or at least had some backup. her scar taunted her for a while, eventually she had no choice but to deal with the fact that she'd forever have that reminder of her weakness.

goodbyes : utahime's father passed away shortly after her scar healed, it was a very intense time for her and she lives to regret never being able to say goodbye the way she wanted. he grew sick, but he's always had a stronger immune sysetem than the rest of the family, that being said, he died suddenly, on a rainy november morning. if she was given the chance, if she had known ! then she would have made sure he was aware of the love she had for him, the only girl surrounded by her brothers she was a daddy's girl, her dad's soft spot, and they had a bond to resemble that. her biggest regret is never telling her dather how much she loved him.

ONE PHOBIA YOUR CHARACTER HAS : etomophobia , aka the fear of bugs. she will scream ! and cry ! she hates them so much, will call somebody if there's a spider in her apartment.

I understand the commotion of everyone shipping gojohime because of gojo teasing her 24/7. Most 'boys' do that to their crushes (yes not men), but geto used to tease her too, right? Now I'm curious– 😣 would suguhime be shippable too? The possibility of her choosing geto over gojo because he's the more 'tolerable' and 'nicer' at least. I can imagine them on a mission? Geto teases her but not as extreme as gojo does, just enough for a friendly banter. Gradually she appreciates him and realizes he is actually 'this okay' than his friend, or notes that he's the mature one, someone whom she can talk to seriously/deeply regarding jujutsu matters or just anything. His smile– unbeknownst to herself she starts to like his soft genuine smile. Yeah, something like this.

hahaha oh hell yeah i love me some getohime. i see it, i ship it (but unfortunately not enough brainrot to write 🥲)

geto was shown to be waaaay more of a people-person and tactful of people's feelings than gojo, and it's 100% gotta be because he grew up socialised like the average kid (parents are non-sorcerers, so he would've gone to school, made friends etc etc). as opposed to gojo who was raised as a kid from a Big 3 family. canon has shown us via the Kamo and Zen'in what it's like to be a kid where your only importance/place in the world is determined by your proximity to power. no power = no place. 1000% that's the reasoning behind gojo categorising people in terms of strong/weak. even his goal of fostering a strong generation of sorcerers is based on strength. i digress lmao, im sure someone's already critiqued that trait of gojo's

hmm i never saw that flashback scene as geto teasing her, more like him doing his usual thing of chiding gojo, and probably he thought he was sticking up for her when he did lmao - at least that's how i saw it

BUT

that said, i can see geto teasing her, in his own way. adult!Geto seems to like toying with people (his introduction to Yuta in JJK0).

i can see him and uta falling down that progression of frenemies by association (gojo) and finding they have more common ground because they've got that sense of responsibility/care for other people. geto's crew refers to themselves as family, so that checks out :)

definitely in a universe where geto never went genocidal fascist, i can see him and utahime bonding over their students. geto would have the same approach nanami has with the "you're a sorcerer, but you're still a kid, don't forget that" bit.
