I just finished Spirit. I wish I could write out many more thoughts than I can do rn. This was some of my favorite Doctor Who content overall tbh. Leela and Romana's differences in personality, beliefs, and logic on full display are exactly what I didn't know I needed. Leelas unique and curious role as an outsider in these high-stakes political games was always a factor playing into her character through the series, but it was really the focal point here in a great way. Romana and Leela both represent radical ends of an irl split in epistemic beliefs. I guess people would see Leela as "superstitious," but I really don't think anything she said even comes close to superstition. It isn't religious or fantastical to suggest that there's something "more than" simply biological fact, and everything Leela brings up ("The fruit IS beautiful"; "How does a bird fly for months to reach its home?") is perfectly compatible with rational metaphysical schemas and certainly with evolution. Narrative-telling is constitutive of humans' biological reproduction. If anything, Romanas insistence on a purely empiricist paradigm over Leelas metaphysical tale only reveals that both are just two sides of the same coin. They are both frameworks to apprehend and predict causal efficacy. They both lead to unique and intense views of how the world operates. But neither is wrong. They're both complimentary.

This comes full circle when the two seem to gain parts of the others' personality, which supports the other side of the coin. Romana suddenly *feels in her body* instead of always in her head. She isn't intellectualizing everything through an analytical lense. Instead, she's really feeling her body for the first time. She probably never could feel the way that oxygen cleans her bloodstream so clearly as she did then. Leela feels uncomfortable with her new intellectual abilities. She isn't relying on the multitude of sense-organs distributed across her body to synthesize the presented data. Instead, she's intellectualizing every wave of information, and her brain organ is perhaps much more hyper-active than it was before. In short, Romanas reliance on a rationalist-empiricist epistemology aligns closely with her *inability* to utilize her sense organs deeply, accurately, and with intimacy. Leelas reliance on the specifically neuromuscular and sensory knowledge allows her a more nuanced interaction with the corporeal landscape around her, but perhaps forbids her from constructing a systematized methodology of propositional logic in the way Romana could.

Neither side of this coin is "better" and in fact us humans have the task of delicately tending to both parts of our makeup, both sets of data-gathering tools. The metaphysician and mathematician Alfred North Whitehead essentially investigates the foundations of these differing personalities in his magnum opus Process & Reality (1929). P&R is one of my favorite works ever and to see the Gallifrey series so brilliantly convey the gradation between his categories of "withness of the body" and "presentational immediacy" through the relationship between Leela and Romana has been an absolute delight. Perched on your shoulders, as they always were, were two companions who had made themselves a permanent part of your life. On your left sat Alhaitham, the embodiment of logic and reason, draped in soft pink robes that symbolized his analytical nature. His sharp teal eyes surveyed everything with quiet scrutiny, always calculating, always ready to provide input—whether you wanted it or not.

On your right sat Kaveh, passionate and vibrant, dressed in crimson hues that reflected the fiery chaos of human emotion. His golden hair seemed to shimmer in the sunlight, and his amber eyes sparkled with endless enthusiasm. Kaveh was everything Alhaitham was not—loud, impulsive, and unapologetically emotional.

“Do you really think you should be wearing that?” Alhaitham asked, his voice calm and measured. His arms were crossed as he glanced at your reflection in the mirror.

“I think she looks stunning,” Kaveh countered, leaning in closer. “Not that she needs my validation or anything, but this outfit? Perfect for a date. Romantic, approachable, and—”

“Impractical,” Alhaitham interrupted, his gaze shifting to Kaveh. “The material is too delicate. What if something spills? Or the weather changes?”

You groaned, turning away from the mirror. “I can’t even decide what to wear without you two arguing.”

“Oh, they brought flowers! How thoughtful!” Kaveh beamed.

“They’re impractical,” Alhaitham muttered, his arms crossed. “A temporary gesture with no real utility. A book would have been a better choice.”

“Not everything has to be practical, Alhaitham,” Kaveh said, rolling his eyes. “Sometimes it’s the thought that counts.”

You accepted the flowers with a smile, thanking your date. As you walked together through the bustling bazaar, Kaveh and Alhaitham continued their back-and-forth commentary in your ear.

When your date suggested trying a popular street food stall, Kaveh was all for it. “Yes! Say yes! Sharing food is such a great bonding experience.”

Alhaitham frowned. “Street food? Do you even know if the stall adheres to proper sanitary practices?”

You sighed, deciding to try the food anyway. As the rich flavors burst across your palate, Kaveh practically did a celebratory dance on your shoulder. “See? Worth it!”

Alhaitham merely sighed, shaking his head. “If she ends up with a stomachache, don’t say I didn’t warn her.”

The day progressed with similar exchanges. When your date reached for your hand, Kaveh nearly fell off your shoulder with excitement. “Yes! Take their hand! This is such a good sign!”

Alhaitham, on the other hand, was less enthusiastic. “Physical contact at this stage might be premature. It’s important to maintain boundaries until trust is fully established.”

You ignored both of them, slipping your hand into your date’s. The warmth of the gesture sent a pleasant tingle up your arm, and you couldn’t help but smile.

“Ha! I win this round,” Kaveh declared triumphantly, sticking his tongue out at Alhaitham.

Alhaitham’s expression didn’t waver. “We’ll see how long the euphoria lasts.”

By the time the sun began to set, the two of you had wandered into a quieter part of the bazaar. The golden light bathed everything in a soft glow, and the atmosphere felt almost magical. Your date pointed out a secluded bench near a fountain, and the two of you sat down, talking about everything and nothing.

Kaveh sighed dreamily. “This is perfect. Look at the way they’re looking at you! You can’t script a moment like this.”

Alhaitham raised an eyebrow. “On the contrary, most moments like this are contrived by societal expectations of romance.”

“Why do you have to ruin everything?” Kaveh snapped. “Can’t you just let her enjoy this?”

“I’m ensuring she doesn’t let her emotions cloud her judgment,” Alhaitham replied coolly.

You tuned them out, focusing instead on your date’s words. They spoke with genuine warmth and interest, asking about your hobbies and sharing stories of their own. It felt… nice.

The Short Patreon Breakdown

1. The iOS processing fees are a smokescreen covering up the actual devastating changes that Patreon is forcing creators into—including doing away with the two billing models used by most of the highest-earning creators on the platform, regardless of the impact this will have on their livelihood.

2. Patreon is not going to change course for any reason. This is set in stone. CEO Jack Conte himself has been having one-on-one meetings and calls with the platform's top earners, and clearly has no interest in their actual grievances or how their businesses operate—only in getting them to stop complaining.

3. Patreon has offered no proof of their claims that the iOS app is responsible for 40 percent of the engagement on the platform—and also refuse to define what "engagement" means. Staff rebuff all requests for detailed analytics or data on the revenue share coming from the app, but did not refute the possibility that dismissing an app notification counted as "engagement."

4. Patreon does not have a refund policy in place to work with Apple in order to protect creators from malicious chargebacks, and has given no indication of any intent to work with Apple to shorten the time it takes for funds from iOS purchases to be paid out to creators—which is currently 75 days.

5. Patreon's own graphics meant to explain why this is necessary and how the new fees work are not correct: the fee structure graphic features a copying error that results in incorrect math, and adding together everything on the bar graph showing the daily active users by avenue of access comes to a total of 103 percent. They are woefully unprepared to share this information, and are putting it on us for "not understanding."

6. Patreon refuses to offer any promises to 18+ creators that they will not be removed from the app in order to adhere to Apple's content guidelines, instead only saying they currently have no plans to remove us from the app. Questioning this was met with a reminder that they've had to change the TOS for 18+ creators before.

7. All the features Patreon is insisting are integral for creator growth are inaccessible to 18+ creators, and questions about this were either dismissed, redirected, or ignored. 18+ creators can't even be found on either app, but we're being forced to cater to iOS' terms anyway, with claims that it's because all creators need the app in order to grow. Even though we can't utilize it.

8. Patreon's iOS app is currently* in violation of Apple's guidelines for app ratings; staff did not state any intention to become compliant by raising the app's rating as needed to maintain their 18+ creator community, only declaring that they're "exploring options." Per Apple's guidelines, the "options" are to either raise the rating to 17+, cutting off access for the wealthy teenagers with iPhones to which the platform is so dedicated they'll kneecap their top earner in order to court, or kick all 18+ creators off the platform. (This includes horror, true crime, health, trauma recovery, and more, not just sexual content.) *Current as of August 18, 2024.

Do not let the 30 percent App Store fee distract you from what's really going on here. Patreon is crippling a huge portion of their creators, including a horde of their top earners—and the single most profitable creator on the entire platform—and offering no legitimate reasons why.
