I heard in the canteen that the humans once used a few antique combustion engines to start one of their portable stars. Any truth to the rumor?

Ah jeez, that was one hell of a day for that guy.

Yes and no. Where do I even being...

Okay. So this place up in Greenland called, uh... I'm gonna butcher this so bad, Hjeilhornhentrotnenheim, has an engineering museum, right? Right, and the guy in charge, his name is, ah fuck this is gonna be bad too ..., Hansinguaq Bjerresvontsgaardsen (I'm just gonna call him Hans from now on because uh yeah, no), collects all the things not fit for display in his personal transport ship. He's essentially converted it into his private mobile museum.

Not long after we established diplomatic channels and preliminary trade routes, Hans eagerly went off on his own to visit Alien equivalents to museums and such. Spent a solid three weeks traveling, sight-seeing, and adding things to his collection.

During a stop on the outer reaches of Coalition space his computer blue screened and forcibly shut down the reactor and pretty much wiped his communication array address book among other less relevant components. And no, I have no clue why he went so far out. He's 46, midlife crisis is my guess, telling him to go out on daring adventures or whatever. Anyway, he couldn't restart the fusion reactor while the inhibitor rod chambers were open, they open and shoot out the star canceler in an emergency shutdown, but one was stuck with the rod half-way in, so Hans had to manually open the reactor and fix it by hand.

Problem is, his transport ship, the Veritable Greenhorn, is fairly big, and the reactor's outer diameter was about 37 meters. Even in zero-g that's a lot of mass for one person to move, not to mention how much force you'd need to pry out a hyper dense metal alloy rod from a gate meant to withstand the pressure of a star right next to it. But he did have a lot mechanical power at his disposal, it just needed to be... rearranged.

Now, he did have backup generators that quietly hum in the background like on every Human vessel, but these are passive and nowhere near enough to charge the hyperdrive even if he could tell it where to go, let alone power machinery to counter a thousand ton jammed deadbolt. He needed something that had a kick to it, something you could really rev beyond its limits just long enough. He needed his V6s and V8s.

After almost two days of DIY engineering details I won't bore you with because I fell asleep when he explained them himself, Hans fired up the engines. It was a very tedious five hours of the engines rythmically tugging the deadbolt a tenth of a milimeter open and what is basically a massive jackhammer pummeling the rod back in. At one point he ran out of gas and was forced to sacrifice his alcohol collection.

Suffice to say it barely worked, all of the machinery he cobbled together became practically unusable, but it worked and he was able to restart the fusion reactor.

Oh, he didn't come home or anything by the way. Like I guess, midlife crisis. If anything, success has made him think nothing can get in the way of his Galactic exploration quest.

So that's the story. No, he didn't use combustion engines to start the reactor or anything, but lacking any other means to fix a problem I honestly didn't know could happen, the petrol guzzlers gave him the right kind of horsepower.

By the way, if you get a chance to tour the Veritable Greenhorn, I'd recommend it. I can't even begin to describe how that contraption looks, it's one of the main displays. I guarantee it's the most specific purpose built and rough pieces of Human engineering you will ever see.

MH-139A Grey Wolf tests new rappelling system

Special U.S. Air Force operators successfully took off from an MH-139A Grey Wolf hovering on the ground about 10 meters from the ground.

This was the culmination of two days of tests involving several ground and flight tests demonstrating the Grey Wolf's fast rope insertion extraction system; another milestone for the aircraft since the U.S. Air Force took ownership on August 12.

The objective of the test of the 413st Flight Test Squadron and Detachment 7 of the Air Force Global Attack Command was to capture data on the ability of the MH-139A to support alternative insertions of team members through fast ropes and rappel ropes.

During the mission, the pilots evaluated the landing area for safety and maintained a stable hover. Four soldiers of the 23rd Special Tactics Squadron and four aviators of the special mission of the AFGSC Det 7 deployed the FRIES equipment, monitored for safe execution and communicated to the pilots the progress of the operation. The test driver orchestrated and collected data for specific test points.

The updated features of Grey Wolf, including the dedicated FRIES equipment of the MH-139A, greater power and the ability to handle center of gravity changes due to the abseiling of the aviators, were examined. In addition, the increased power and support capacity of the aircraft were evaluated and data were collected for specific test points.

“The MH-139A testing campaign has been working tirelessly to perform safe and effective tests and provide relevant data to our acquisition customers and fighters to inform the decision to acquire this aircraft,” said Lieutenant Colonel Josh Hallford of AFGSC Det. 7 and one of the pilots for the flight.

The MH-139A will replace the Air Force's UH-1N aircraft fleet, increasing capabilities in speed, range, endurance, payload and survival capacity. The Air Force will acquire up to 80 helicopters, training devices and associated support equipment. The aircraft will provide vertical air transport and support to four major commands and other operational agencies.

Toyota Tacoma et Ford F-150

Ce n’est pas la première fois que je vous parle du pick-up intermédiaire Tacoma du géant japonais Toyota…mais c’est la dernière fois que je devrais vous parler de la version actuelle qui, selon toute probabilité, devrait céder sa place à une toute nouvelle version d’ici quelques moins.

En effet, Toyota a déjà révélé les détails du Tacoma 2024 qui devrait être mis sur le marché sous peu. Toutefois, cette nouvelle camionnette devra remplacer le véhicule le plus populaire de son créneau au moment d’écrire ces lignes ce qui ne sera pas une mince tâche! Selon toute vraisemblance, le nouveau Tacoma à venir n’aura qu’un moteur à quatre cylindres sous le capot (mais en deux versions, turbocompressé ou hybride de 274 ou 326 chevaux) et la boîte de vitesses disponible sera surtout une  automatique à huit rapports avec la possibilité de la manuelle mais qu’avec les versions sportives). Dans le cas du Tacoma TRD dont il est question dans cet article, le moteur est ce vénérable V6 tant apprécié de 3,5 litres alors que la boîte de vitesses était un modèle manuel à six rapports!

Comme vous pouvez le voir sur les photos, l’actuel Tacoma nous revient en 2023 avec une silhouette qui nous est familière depuis environ huit ans. Il est possible d’obtenir un petit moteur à quatre cylindres de 159 chevaux avec la boîte automatique à six rapports avec la version de base mais qu’aux États-Unis. Toyota Canada a préféré me fournir une version TRD avec cabine allongée Access Cab (à deux portes et deux panneaux ouvrants) et caisse longue au lieu de la version Double Cab (à quatre portes) avec caisse de cinq pieds. Sous son capot se trouve le V6 mentionné plus haut avec la boîte manuelle et la motricité aux quatre roues sélectionnable (la seule configuration disponible chez nous). Quant au design, il doit encore plaire à plus d’un amateur vu que, je le répète, c’est la camionnette la plus vendue de sa catégorie (dans plusieurs régions, elle se vend même plus que le plus grand Tundra). Le constructeur d’origine japonaise a décidé de redessiner le Tacoma lui donnant des lignes inspirées de celles du grand Tundra lancé dernièrement.

Je reviens donc à mes moutons. Comme je l’écrivais la semaine dernière, la plupart des véhicules que je vais couvrir au cours des prochaines semaines, ce sont des autos et camionnettes qui disparaîtront éventuellement du marché, certains au grand détriment des amateurs de voitures d’une époque qui est à se dissoudre. Ce Tacoma en est l’un d’eux.

Son intérieur n’a presque pas changé depuis son lancement sauf pour certains accessoires modernisés comme la radio qui, maintenant, a le XM. Puis, il y a l’écran rendu nécessaire par l’obligation de la caméra de marche arrière et autres innovations technologiques incluant Apple CarPlay et Android Auto, toutes des technologies que les ingénieurs de Toyota ne semblent pas avoir eu de difficultés à intégrés à un tableau de bord des plus ordinaires. Pourtant tout y est…avec des commandes tactiles mécaniques!

Cependant, cet intérieur en est rendu à un point où il faut tout moderniser. La finition est plastique à outrance…et de design ancien. Mais tout y est plaisant. Sauf pour les places arrière. La version Access Cab n’est ni plus ni moins qu’une cabine allongée avec deux petits bancs peu invitants (et peu confortables) bons que pour des enfants sur une petite distance ! Disons que ce compartiment arrière suffit à peine à transporter quelques objets que l’on veut protéger des éléments extérieurs. Puis, grimper dans la cabine demande un peu d’acrobatie. Ouaip! Ce Tacoma était un vrai «p’tit truck» !

La caisse de six pieds de plancher est on ne peut plus traditionnelle mais avec quelques points d’ancrage utiles. Évidemment, le panneau arrière est aussi traditionnel et y grimper demande encore une fois de l’acrobatie car il n’y a aucune aide. Mais, sauf le fait qu’il y est impossible d’y transporter des panneaux de contreplaqué à plat entre les ailes, c’est un outil de travail satisfaisant.

Une mécanique traditionnelle

Tout est un peu archaïque avec le Tacoma. Même le moteur V6 à DACT de 3,5 litres avec allumage variable et injection directe qui fait, en passant 278 chevaux et 265 li-pi de couple (suffisant pour tirer des remorques allant jusqu’à 6500 livres) . La boîte de vitesses manuelle est aussi de configuration un peu dépassée (le seul fait d’avoir placé la marche arrière en haut à gauche peut provoquer une erreur de manipulation à une intersection quand on y place le levier pensant que c’est en première). La suspension est un peu trop rigide à mon goût ce qui est explicable par le pont arrière avec suspension à lames de configuration ancienne. Fonctionnelle…mais ancienne! La direction est à crémaillère mais son assistance est hydraulique…encore un peu vieux jeu. Le choix de la motricité aux roues arrière ou aux quatre roues est, cependant, à sélection électrique mais il n’y a pas de choix «AUTO 4 X 4». Mais le frein de stationnement est toujours un levier mécanique à main entre les sièges. Les gros pneus Goodyear Wrangler Territory tout terrain sont de dimension 205/60 R16 très efficaces dans la boue ou en terrain sablonneux mais que je changerais pour des pneus d’hiver de glace durant la saison froide.

Sur la route

Disons que le Tacoma V6 n’est pas un véhicule de performance. La boîte de vitesses manuelle a une première vitesse courte qui exige un changement de rapport rapide car le V6 montre vite en régime et s’essouffle rapidement. Malgré tout, avec un peu de pratique, il faut environ 8 secondes pour passer du point mort à 100 km/h avec ce véhicule de plus de 4500 livres. Les reprises peuvent être plus rapides en vitesse de croisière si le conducteur sait bien manipuler le levier. Attention, cependant, le train arrière a la fâcheuse manie de sautiller sur pavé inégal.

Sur autoroute, le véhicule n’est pas très bruyant et il est relativement confortable. La direction est relativement précise mais le freinage est…celui d’une camionnette avec pont arrière rigide et suspension très ferme. Elle peut réagir de façon subite.

En ville, encore une fois, la suspension rigide peut rendre la portée inconfortable (nos belles rues en sont un peu responsables, n’est-ce pas?). Mais la visibilité y est bonne ce qui rend la camionnette facile à garer surtout avec l’aide de la caméra de marche arrière.

J’ai fait un peu de «off-road» avec le Tacoma dans la pépinière Pepinor de mon ami Pierre Archambault à Laval mais, le terrain était des plus secs ce qui aidait à la motricité. Néanmoins, je ne doute pas de la capacité de motricité en terrain difficile du véhicule dans des conditions plus exigeantes, les pneus Goodyear aidant. Et la garde au sol aide beaucoup aux franchissements de différentes inégalités du sol incluant les petits ruisseaux. Il reste que pour des travaux plus ou moins difficiles, ce Tacoma n’aura connu aucune difficile de déplacement.

En ce qui a trait à la consommation, j’ai obtenu 15,8 l./100 km (calcul à la pompe) en situation surtout urbaine. Je ne m’attendais à pas mieux malgré la promesse de frugalité du constructeur. C’est ça, une petite camionnette 4 x 4. Mon Tacoma 4 x 4 Access Cab (TRD) affichait un prix de base de 43 990 $ et, avec quelques frais «écologiques» (incluant cette toujours aussi incroyable taxe fédérale d’accise pour le climatiseur de 100 $) et le transport et la préparation de 1930 $, la facture était de 46 053 $. Sa concurrence est de plus en plus vive, surtout de la part de Ford avec son Ranger (qui sera révisé lui aussi dans un avenir rapproché) et Jeep avec son Gladiator. Il faudra aussi compter sur Nissan avec son Frontier et GM avec ses Colorado et Canyon.

On a beau aimer ses pick-up 4 x 4 traditionnels rigides et un peu archaïques, il faudra se plier aux nouvelles exigences de plus en plus modernes ce qui arrivera au nouveau Tacoma. Mais je vais quand même m’ennuyer de cette génération de Tacoma!

Un peu de F-150

Je reviens tout juste d’un programme de Ford Canada, soit une présentation du tout nouveau pick-up plus robuste F-250 dans la région de Trois-Rivières. Pour revenir de cet évènement, les responsables de Ford m’ont demandé de ramener un F-150 2023 Lariat jusqu’à l’aéroport de Dorval. Cela m’a donné l’opportunité de conduire ce véhicule de nouveau avant que Ford nous propose la version révisée de 2024.

En fait, il ne s’agissait que d’un cours de rattrapage où il n’y avait rien à apprendre mais tout à redécouvrir. Lorsque vient le temps de couvrir du pays, je comprends pourquoi les F-150 plaisent tellement à leurs propriétaires ne serait-ce que par leur douceur et silence de roulement en plus de tous les accessoires et «arrangements» électroniques du tableau de bord. Mon F-150 à cabine à quatre portes était de la finition Lariat. Ce n’est pas la plus élaborée mais ce qu’elle est bien équipée.

Évidemment, un tel F-150 n’est pas facile à manœuvrer en ville (comme le prouvent les multiples F-150 qui y circulent) mais sur l’autoroute, voilà le véhicule idéal pour de longs voyages. L’exercice ne fut pas long mais il fut suffisant pour que je me prépare à la toute nouvelle version révisée de 2024 qui devrait nous arriver sous peu. Puis, ce même exercice s’inscrit dans la formule que je vis présentement des essais de véhicules en fin de carrière…
