While I'm still hyperfixating on Vocaloid and other vocal synths, I just want to rant about something.
See this YouTube thumbnail?
Tumblr media
This thumbnail exemplifies a trend in the vocal synth community that really bothers me.
I get that SynthV has some amazing, realistic outputs. I understand that VOCALOID6 was disappointing to some people, especially those who like hyper-realistic vocal synths. However, I think this approach to criticizing VOCALOID (and other software by extension) comes off as unnecessarily combative.
There is certainly fair criticism of VOCALOID6 that should be discussed (looking at you, Vocalo-Changer), but it veers into more personal territory when you start pitting the mascots against each other. I get that this is often done as a joke, and it can be funny when executed well. It's just that some people also use this as a semi-serious way to promote their software of choice/disparage others. It's not the be-all end-all of annoying fandom behavior, but it gets under my skin nonetheless.
There's also a very small but very loud minority who will straight-up call you stupid if you like anything other than their preferred software. No one likes those people. The person who made this thumbnail is not part of that group, and I don't think they intend to start any serious drama. They're just trying to get views for their video. Please don't attack them.
I guess my larger point is, no one should feel like they're being mocked for their preferred vocal synth software. Each one has its unique strengths and weaknesses. It's okay to have your preferences, and it's okay (heck, more than okay) to criticize/want better of corporations and their products. It's just not fun when this criticism turns inflammatory toward fans of these products, who are not the original targets.
That's all.

I think about this cover a lot

youtube
Maybe because I love Juno Songs’ covers so much!
Also, have you thought about covering a Juno Songs Cover? I feel like your voice would be perfect to cover Tree Crown Without A Ruler!
OOC: Mod here! Wow, that’s such a cool cover.
As for your thoughts on a Gumi cover, well, my main issue is that I don’t know how to make Vocaloid files from scratch. Or, really at all, actually. Most of my experience comes from using UTAU, and even then, the best I can do “from scratch” is with a midi to build off of.
So if I were to make a Mistiltein cover, or anything else even, I’d need at LEAST midi of the lyrical part to work with, and then I’ll need to teach myself how to tune Vocaloid 6 files.
That, or figure out how to use Vocalo changer, which yes, would be a copout, but might be all I can manage with actual vocaloid.

Why Yamaha, why.
youtube
Oh, so Yamaha decided to grace us with the gift of their "new" VOCALO-Changer plugin, did they? How utterly unnecessary. I mean, why on earth do we need this when we already have VOCALOID6 with its array of features (and they could have updated that plugin, the one inside VOCALOID6)? It's like getting an extra shoelace for your shoes when you've already got two perfectly fine ones.
And the price, my dear friends, the price! They're charging a whopping $180 USD before taxes. Seriously? I could buy a few amazing plugins for that kind of money that would blow this thing out of the water. It's like they're trying to see how much money they can squeeze out of us for something that should have been included in an update!
Yamaha, Yamaha, Yamaha. It's almost as if they've been living under a rock lately. Their recent products seem to be stuck in the past, while the rest of the world moves forward. It's like they're saying, "Hey, remember us? We used to be relevant!"
In a world where innovation is the name of the game, VOCALO-Changer feels like a relic of a bygone era, look at RVC models... . It's high time Yamaha got with the program and gave us something truly cutting-edge. But hey, if you've got money to burn and a love for outdated plugins, be my guest. Yamaha's got just the thing for you! I guess, despite everything, if you just want to play around VOCALO-Changer and you don't already own VOCALOID6 Editor it could be worth I guess. But still...

what are some of your hottest vsynth takes
hi this is a lot of negative and complainy stuff have fun.
illustrators in the community are absolutely tossed aside.
you dont need to use voice synth programs to be a huge vocal synth fan.
utau isnt hard compared to most vocal synths. all voice synths are hard and have their own learning curve. it's just a matter if you want to learn it.
kikuo isnt unique, like at all. its more like combining 3 different styles (edm, orchestral, and like music box sounds???) into one song and the songs where he doesnt use like all three or more are good but like. i wouldnt call them unique. particularly salty abt this bc there was this one person that would never shut the fuck up about how unique kikuo was when its like... yeah kinda mid.
female utau voicebanks sound bad. i dont know what it is they just sound like dog doo doo a good 70% of the time. male ones almost always pop off- worst case theyre a little flat and plain.
utau and pre vocaloid 5 are better than any ai ever.
ai voicebanks are weird. i get it. theyre really cool and impressive. however, they don't give off what made vocaloid unique back in its day. there's a few ai vbs that are "robotic" (kafu, kevin, uhhh) and theyre honestly the best ais out there. for realistic vocals- best ones are stardust and solaria.
with that being said uncanny > realistic > robotic
i hate vocals that are extremely choppy and robotic like defoko sorry girlboss.
the project diva franchise sucks ass. i dont think this is unpopular, but i literally cant play the pc ver of mega mix bc the audio doesnt work with RAZER HEADPHONES. like the best gaming headphones out there and i have to play it with my headphones unplugged or it sounds like its from splatoon. even the older games are kinda meh, like dont give them rooms and talking man- just let me tap tap button chart.
meiko is actually so mid. im so sorry i dont understand the appeal to her voice. both deep and when its squeaky.
almost all english voicebanks (with exception of a couple of ai vbs) are garbage. and i know its bc the language is harder to replicate blah blah blah phonetics blah.
talkloids are annoying. the only good one is that one of shuu and ruko on miku day that i saw on twitter. funniest shit. you can hear the happiness in their voices.
bring back the cevio colour series.
proseka en was the worst thing to happen to the vocaloid fandom in 10 years.
proseka > project diva
friday night funkin was the worst thing to happen to utau. ever.
9zero is cool as fuck. he sounds like GARBAGE- but oh my god you know what this means- were getting closer to true rock synths.
vocalo changer is lazy. with that being said. i love it. as long as the person that creates content with it acknowledges it as lazy, have fun.
they/them pronouns for any voice synth character is so fucking real. do it more.
creep-ps music slaps so hard. both old and new.
ikus og vb is better than her remaster
dont get mad at p's for moving on in the music industry. voice synths are a hobby. not an industry material.
people that literally interpret the vippers bios are the worst people and need to fall over.

sorry no art and instead im having an autism vocal synthesis enjoyer moment, but i wanted to post a diff-svc voice model ive been working on with my own vocals in between work stuff and whenever i have the time to record and to  allow my pc to be on to train the model. like 11k steps so not very high in quality but its insane how accurate it is to my own voice already. info doc regarding diff-svc for the uninitiated, but think the vocalo changer from vocaloid 6 but free* and you can train your own vocal samples to sing or say literally whatever from whatever language.
credits for the svp/synthv file i used as reference audio for this sample using my model in the vid
*i paid for google colab pro for more resources because i dont wanna train locally lol

Normally I don't post WIPs with other synths here, but since this is a vocalsynth-oriented site/blog, why not :P
Anyways I tested out that funky VOCALO CHANGER feature and it's... surprisingly decent at what it does

Okay so I am 100% a manual user, I love having complete control over how the pitch sounds and in my honest opinion pitch tuning is the best part of tuning. Autopitch is impressive, but not for me! Too samey, too "normal" sounding, but it is useful for lots of one off notes I can't be bothered to tune. I've been screwing around with the current SV beta including vocal to midi, which is essentially vocalistener but in 2024.
It keeps vocalistener's charm by how wildly inaccurate it is at getting lyrics down, but the pitch conversion is alright. In the whole track here, I only had to fix a few pitch lines with my own tuning (see if you can hear them!) though there are still a few hiccups. I much prefer this integration over whatever Yamaha was cooking with V6 vocalo changer. Vocalo my behated.
This thing did eat all of my ram like it was a delicious breakfast though. As well as crashing constantly. But it's a beta so meh.
Will I use it? Probably to make arrangements of my own voice, yeah. Nice to cut the middle man (LMMS) out and do all my work in SV. I'm basically using SV as a DAW anyway at this point because of how you can convert everything to other vocal synth engine files instantly.

Yknow I'd probably be all over vocalo-changer if there was a non standard vocal in my range. I've been messing with it but also pitching my voice up an octave for gumi

Synth V | VOCALOID?
Many people keep saying how outdated is VOCALOID6. Is that true? Well, that's purely in the eyes of the beholder.
If we think about realism out of the blue, without too much effort other than polishing an already good outcome... Yes, Synth V is way better. And, don't get me wrong, being superb at is also takes time.
Then we have VOCALOID6. In essence AI voices here are a.... polished version of how VOCALOID5 was, but without the voices going out of tune while "trying to add a human way of singing". However, you have very little control, pitch, dyn and something close to tension... but in barebones. Great things can be done, but is less comfy. HOWEVER VOCALOID6 also has a new feature: Vocalo Changer. It seems useless unless you have plenty of dry acapellas, you don't know how to sing or if you don't have a proper environment to record. But it can capture little details, like MJ ones, with the vocaloid voice.
I wish YAMAHA were adding more features tho. I would kill to have an option to convert vocalo changer outputs to VPRs, because it's actually really accurate to capture pitch. Or I will love to have more parameters to play with.

Ah...
reddit.com/r/Vocaloid/comments/yzho7h/sarahall_i_want_for_christmas_is_youvocaloid_6/ this is funny, some random saying I've just used original Mariah Carey vocals and call it a day, basically implying that I've lied? So I posted my vocaloid (vocalo-changer) wav + original Mariah's main acapella. Anyone with Sarah can replicate my wav as long as you have V6 and Sarah. That is going to be there, anyway.
