Vintage Crop — Kibitzer (Upset the Rhythm)

Kibitzer by Vintage Crop
More tightly wound mayhem comes from Geelong’s bash-and-poppers. This second LP was recorded before the wrapping on the first one had time to warp, in a rush to capitalize on whatever momentum COVID left in place. Like its predecessor, Kibitzer combines sharp, punchy, repetitive riffs with highly caffeinated rants (I called Vintage Crop “very good, tight and disciplined and explosive” in my review last time). Singer Jack Cherry vies with Art Brute’s Eddie Argos for just how tickled he sounds by his own sardonic verbiage — he really seems to be enjoying himself.
And why not? Headlong bangers like “The Duke” wind themselves up like mechanical toys, twisting the tension up and up and up before finally letting loose in its shout-along chorus. “Hold the Line,” the band’s epic dissection of every sort of telemarketing scam, sets disaffection to ratcheting onslaughts of sharp-toothed guitar-drum free-for-all. “Impact of Wisdom,” is quite possibly the best punk song ever about a toothache. (“Wait till it hurts every time your heart beats.”) Vintage Crop has long since recognized that a great tune can be about anything at all.
It's maybe it’s this glee, the giddy irrepressible energy that Cherry and crew bring to the party, that sets Vintage Crop apart from the hoards of guitar-slashing, pogo-bopping monologuers who mine the general territory of post-punk. Squid, Dry Cleaning, Black Country, New Road all sound downright unexcited next to Vintage Crop, who emerge from their serrated grooves hands held high and clutching the golden ticket. Life is good. Punk is fun. Who’s going to kibitz with that?

The Uranium Club - Infants Under the Bulb
Eccovi qualche link…

What’s On Michael Portillo’s iPod: Dragnet
Here at Birthday Cake For Breakfast, we like to get to the heart of what an artist is all about. We feel that what influences them is just as important as the music they make. With that in mind, off the back of releasing their new album ‘The Accession‘, Jack Cherry of Aussie outfit Dragnet talks us through what influenced the record. Take it away, Jack… Words: Andy Hughes The Fall album…

Live Review: Vintage Crop at The Peer Hat in Manchester 05 July 2022
Live Review: Vintage Crop at The Peer Hat in Manchester 05 July 2022
Words: Andy Hughes Careering down the steps into the basement of The Peer Hat with two very full pints, momentarily I thought I’d been transported to the land of guns and Mickey Mouse, given the deafening sound of American country music from behind the door. Not quite the real McCoy, Manchester country-sleaze outfit HONK were just as good, in full swing upon entry, shades wearing frontman Chip…
