What is the appeal of vintage computers to you? Is it the vintage video games or is it the programs? If so, what kind of programs do you like to run on them?

Fair warning, we're talking about a subject I've been passionate about for most of my life, so this will take a minute. The answer ties into how I discovered the hobby, so we'll start with a few highlights:

I played old video games starting when I was 9 or 10.

I became fascinated with older icons buried within Windows.

Tried to play my first video game (War Eagles) again at age 11, learned about the hardware and software requirements being way different than anything I had available (a Pentium III-era Celeron running Windows ME)

I was given a Commodore 1541 by a family friend at age ~12.

Watched a documentary about the history of computers that filled in the gaps between vague mentions of ENIAC and punch cards, and DOS/Windows machines (age 13).

Read through OLD-COMPUTERS.COM for the entire summer immediately after that.

Got my first Commodore 64 at age 14.

I mostly fell into the hobby because I wanted to play old video games, but ended up not finding a ton of stuff that I really wanted to play. Instead, the process of using the machines, trying the operating system, appreciating the aesthetic, the functional design choices of the user experience became the greater experience. Oh, and fixing them.

Then I started installing operating systems on some DOS machines, or playing with odd peripherals, and customizing hardware to my needs. Oh, and programming! Mostly in BASIC on 8-bit hardware, but tinkering with what each computer could do is just so fascinating to me. I'm in control, and there isn't much of anything between what I write and the hardware carrying it out (especially on pre-Windows machines)! No obfuscation layers, run-times, .dlls, etc. Regardless of the system, BASIC is always a first choice for me. Nova, Ohio Scientific, Commodore, etc. I usually try to see what I can do with the available BASIC dialect and hardware. I also tend to find a game or two to try, especially modern homebrew Commodore games because that community is always creating something new. PC stuff I focus more on pre-made software of the era.

Just to name a few examples from a variety of systems: Tetris, terminal emulators, Command & Conquer titles, screen savers, War Eagles, Continuum, video capture software, Atomic Bomberman, demos, LEGO Island, Bejeweled clones, Commander Keen 1-3, lunar lander, Galaxian, sinewave displays, 2048, Pacman, mandelbrot sets, war dialers, paint -- I could keep going.

Changing gears, I find it funny how often elders outside of the vintage computing community would talk about the era I'm interested in (60s-early 90s). [spoken with Mr. Regular's old man voice]: "Well, computers used to be big as a room! And we used punch cards, and COBOL!" I didn't know what any of that meant, and when pressed for technical detail they couldn't tell you anything substantial. Nobody conveyed any specifics beyond "that's what we used!"

I noticed that gaps remained in how that history was presented to me, even when university-level computer science and history professors were engaged on the subject. I had to go find it on my own. History is written by the victors, yeah? When was the last time a mainstream documentary or period piece focused on someone other than an Apple or Microsoft employee? Well, in this case, you can sidestep all that and see it for yourself if you know where to look.

Experiencing the history first hand to really convey how computers got from point A to B all the way down to Z is enlightening. What's cool is that unlike so many other fields of history, it's near enough in time that we can engage with people who were there, or better yet, made it happen! Why do you think I like going to vintage computer festivals?

We can see the missteps, the dead-ends, the clunkiness, the forgotten gems and lost paradigms, hopefully with context of why it happened. For the things we can't find more information on, when or documentation and perspectives are limited, sometimes we have to resort to digital archeology, and reverse engineering practices to save data, fix machines, and learn how they work. The greater arc of computer history fascinates me, and I intend to learn about it by fixing and using the computers that exemplify it best, and sharing that passion with others who might enjoy it.

Why the headlights of a vehicle are generally yellow in colour rather than white?

Skater boy Aaron is real and true and canon (to me at least)

He is the poster boy for the early 2000s skater aesthetic

Part of the reason he continues skating in college is because he enjoys the heart attack it gives Kevin

Kevin doesn’t want him getting hurt and jeopardizing the team and his wellbeing

So Aaron makes sure he finds time to skate everyday

Aaron is a lover of pop culture and is just a fucking nerd dude

He loves Lord of the Rings and read Harry Potter as it came out (and also very actively hates JKR in the modern day)

Aaron Minyard is a chronic migraine girly

He’s a med student and athlete who gets very little sleep so his head constantly hurts

And yaknow what he’s a little bitch about it too

He is constantly complaining to Katelyn and using it as an excuse to be an asshole

(I love him so dearly)

I also think he is constantly cold and has terrible blood circulation

His hands and feet are always freezing

Years of drug use and constantly needing to take Advil for his headaches has just shot his cardiovascular system

So he’s constantly cold and doesn’t run a lot because his stamina is shit

He has a raging addiction to caffeine and his vice is RedBulls

His sleep schedule is absolutely wrecked from both Exy and school so he’s rarely ever without a RedBull in hand

I don’t think he cares a lot about his diet but he does try to keep it pretty nutrient packed bc he knows the benefits of it

But he also has a sweet tooth (not as strong as Andrew’s but still strong) and he favors baked goods like cake and banana bread and pastries

His vision is bad and it just keeps getting worse over the years but he doesn’t wear his glasses often

He usually resorts to contacts but has to switch to his glasses late at night or when his head is hurting extra bad

OKAY KEVIN FUCKING DAY

He loves tea

Like has an extensive tea collection and will spend the money to buy teas from around the world

He also has a mug collection (the Foxes start gifting him mugs every holiday when they find out about it)

His favorite mugs are his vintage Trojans mug, a “history is not boring” mug the Foxes gave him when he graduated, and a Hogwarts mug Aaron gave him

(they read the series together :P)

Kevin’s favorite areas of history to study are Ancient Rome and the history of Ireland

He’s fascinated by the Roman Empire and studying Ireland makes him feel more connected to his mother

I think he continues school on the side and eventually gets a doctorate degree and teaches a bit after he retires from Exy

He always tries to sign with teams in or near the cities the other OG Foxes are in because he doesn’t really know how to function without the familiarity of his people

Kevin works a lot on undoing his Raven dietary habits and since he’s surrounded by people who can’t cook he grows a love for frozen food as well as caffeine

I think he takes a few art classes and really enjoys it even though he doesn’t think he’s that great at it

He’s actually not bad at all and makes a lot of really cool pieces

Kevin exclusively wears 5 inch inseam shorts

Anything longer is blasphemous

He has basically zero sense of style and just kind of mimics what the others are wearing

Until Allison forces him to go to the mall with her and they spend hours building him a real wardrobe that is him

Most of his closest still consists of PSU and USC merch though

And truly would this even be me if I didn’t put kevaaron headcanons? No

Kevin is basically a human radiator, especially after practice

And that is a blessing directly from God in Aaron’s eyes

Kevin comes back from night practice and Aaron just clings to him, absorbing all of his heat as they fall asleep

Aaron is a chronic clothes stealer like he just has sticky fingers when it comes to Kevin’s wardrobe

They spend a lot of time together in the library

They’re both in quite intensive and workload heavy majors so they study together a lot

It happened more as an accident tbh like Aaron was heading to the library to study for a midterm

And basically all of PSU’s student body had the same idea so there was no open tables

But low and behold there was Kevin, alone at a table tucked in the back corner, typing away at his laptop

Aaron joins him without asking and it kinda just becomes their thing

Kevin joins Aaron at the library between regular and night practices

They spend most of their weekends there and bring each other caffeinated drinks and snacks

Eventually they’re not even studying half the time, they’re just talking and spending time with each other outside of Exy and the other Foxes curious glances and prying comments

Aaron takes a history class with Kevin but Kevin refuses to take any science class outside of his required credits

He’s not a science person so Aaron doesn’t take it personally

Kevin can never properly wrap his head around how strong Aaron actually is

It just doesn’t compute for him, like how can so much strength be packed into such a small body

But he is most definitely not complaining, especially not when that strength is so clearly but on display or used against him

Kevin is practically drooling anytime he watches Aaron body check a striker twice his size and send them sprawling onto the floor

They become each others partners/marks during practices and it is simultaneously the best and worst thing to ever happen

They’re just excessively flirting while tripping each other and fighting with their racquets

The other Foxes comment on their “weird and disturbing foreplay” every chance they get

As a follow-up to housewarming gifts, the longtime besties turned roommates make a day out of shopping for something that screams them, but also elevates their space like Chenle lovingly, jokingly intended. The store: massive. The inventory: extensive. The possibilities: endless.

What are some of the items they consider (both seriously and just for laughs)?

What do they actually bring home?

And most importantly, is Chenle impressed?

mark and nabi (fucking sick of calling her mark’s best friend, i’ve given her a name and i’m gonna announce it in a post soon) would absolutely make a day out of this, turning what should be a straightforward shopping trip into an adventure filled with chaos, inside jokes, and way too many unnecessary items in their cart. the store they choose is massive, the kind of place that sells everything from sleek, modern furniture to absurd novelty items, and it takes approximately five minutes before they get completely sidetracked.

things they seriously consider:

a sleek, oversized coffee table that doubles as storage, with clean lines that elevate the room but also hide their clutter.

an industrial-style floor lamp with exposed bulbs, something that screams “grown-up apartment” but is also way cooler than it needs to be.

an expensive mirror that leans against the wall, the kind that makes every outfit look incredible.

a record player that comes with built-in speakers, so they can pretend they’re more cultured than they actually are while blasting whatever spotify playlist fits the mood.

a set of matching barstools that actually fit the kitchen island, because functionality matters… sometimes.

things they consider just for laughs:

a life-size cardboard cutout of stephen curry (it caught mark and chenle’s eyes) which they both find hilarious but also weirdly tempting.

a neon sign that says something completely ridiculous like “no thoughts, just vibes” or “chaos HQ.”

Has pointe become unnecessary?

Hear me out. In vintage videos, pointe shoes used to be incredibly slim and tapered, like the dancers were balancing on needles! Today’s pointe shoes, though, are more like platforms—wide and bulky. This change makes sense, of course, to meet the demands of modern ballet, which is technically more advanced.

But the other day, I stumbled on a bootleg video of a Vaganova exam, possibly one with Savalieva in her fourth or fifth year, and she was performing so well.

Anyway, that’s beside the point. Watching it, I initially thought all those young dancers were on pointe, partly because of the low video quality but also because their relevés were so high and controlled. Then they left to put on their pointe shoes, and I realized they’d actually been on flat before! Surprisingly, putting on the pointe shoes didn’t make them much taller; they were already achieving such height in their relevés.

So, my question is this: could we one day leave pointe behind? Pointe shoes don’t have the same elegance they once did, and with dancers capable of such high relevés, are they still essential? Plus, they’re so expensive and painful. Do we really need them?

I like the way you think! But it seems the ballet world is going the opposite way, actually. If you look at recent Vaganova exams, they wear pointe shoes even for the jump section now—Tsiskaridze’s class had them on for all of center!

But pointe is not unnecessary, as it’s part of the aesthetic, functionality, history, and soul of ballet.

There are the Americans who use them even at the barre, claiming it makes them stronger. I have to disagree; there is no way they are articulating their feet as well as they would be if they were wearing flats. Also, I find it a waste of money to use pointe shoes for both barre and center. I personally prefer the Russian method of basically wearing them only at rehearsals, but they can do so because their feet, ankles, and bodies are so strong.

I love what you said about Savalieva already looking beautiful without pointe, but that’s because Vaganova selects aesthetically perfect, talented girls. However, not all academies have such strict selection, so you won’t always have groups of girls with those levels of aesthetics, as you describe. You can’t assume Vaganova Academy represents the whole dance world.

I agree that the modern pointe shoe is uglier, but it’s more practical and meets the requirements for modern ballet.

The GIRLNEXTDOOR VILLA is soft Mediterranean-style home nestled between lavender gardens and white rose bushes, the GIRLNEXTDOOR villa feels like it was pulled straight from a dreamscape. Modern with a vintage flair, it reflects the duality of the group: youthful charm with mature undertones. The interior holds pastel tones, floral wallpapers, wooden floors, and gold-accented furnishings. Natural lighting floods every room through tall French windows, creating a cozy, lived-in atmosphere.
