the rebellion saying that something called q!bad into this world and they are surprised that something disastrous hasn't happened, or "maybe it has already happened and we don't know about it."
this is the most open backing we have to bad's story, where he talked about a demon that was summoned and caused the destruction of a city, presumably atlantis. it's nice to get even more confirmation that bad's summoning was from another world, out of his control, and linked with destruction.

"Ted and Rebecca should have been endgame" I say into the mic.
The crowd boos. I begin to walk off in shame, when a voice speaks and commands silence from the room.
"She's right" they say. I look for the owner of the voice. There in the 5th row stands: Hannah Waddingham herself.

Tumblr media
you have one (1) brain cell
be nice to it. it's the only one you have. maybe the only one you'll ever have. if it gets plenty of water and sunlight maybe it'll grow.

I recommend Our Flag Means Death to everyone all of the time, but a friend told me I shouldn't mention the romantic aspect of the show because it's a "nice surprise twist at the end." I understand, BUT...
As soon as Ed hops on that boat in episode four and comforts Stede in bed, the foundation is in place. We are so prone to read a relationship like this as homoerotic subtext played for laughs instead of what it truly is, so we dismiss it even when it is thrown at us each and every episode.
Tumblr media
Most of us were thrilled we weren't queerbaited, and this show is the exception and not the standard when it comes to follow through, but placing the ending in the "surprise twist" category doesn't do it justice. This was good storytelling and should be applauded for its consistency.
The shows and plots that don't complete the romantic arc because it is written to be a joke or a bromance should be the ones considered "surprise twists." Without getting too specific, if a show gives constant romantic undertones for a pairing yet does not deliver an established understanding from the characters of what behavior they are engaging in (flirting, courting, pining, etc.), that should be the shocker to the audience each time we see it in a show. We shouldn't expect the narrative to fizzle when the buildup is apparent. We shouldn't be comfortable being lied to and shocked when we aren't. Much like Ed when he first meets Stede, Our Flag Means Death was honest with us that he was Ed hiding within Blackbeard it was a romance hiding on a pirate ship; we just needed to believe it when it told us the truth.
