Hell-Cat Maggie, the woman on Ned Low's crew, was a real woman who lived in the mid-19th century in New York City. She was a member of the Dead Rabbits, an Irish gang who controlled areas around the Bowery (known as the Five Points). She was known as a complete badass, and did reportedly have her teeth filed into points. She also wore claws on the ends of her fingers, resembling cat claws. She's featured in Scorsese's Gangs of New York (first pic).

Very sexy of David Jenkins to use a notorious woman gangster who wasn't born until 100 years after this show is set, and to put her in a completely different setting. Love it.

Edit: Apparently the woman playing Hellcat Maggie is David Jenkins’ wife!! 10/10 no notes

This chapter was completely inspired by the scene in the pilot episode of Season one. I always wondered why Mary was angry at Stede for his remark on Arthur and his kind eyes...

Mary and Ed bond over swapping notes on Stede and Izzy discovers his purpose and faith in a crazy old Sea Witch.

So Anne Bonny is unironically right about Stede being a heartbreaker, like just look at how he interacts with Hellcat Maggie, Anne herself, Ed. This man just goes around dropping utterly cheesy lines without even a hint of awareness that he's flirting. I know there's some random saleswoman in the republic of pirates who fell madly in love with him because he was the first man to ever treat her like a lady and then she saw him and Ed on a date and now she's sobbing to her friends like "I can't believe he was gay the whole time"

Stede "why are all the good ones gay" Bonnet. Stede "the first man to bother to treat Blackbeard like a gentleman" Bonnet. Stede "got taught how to treat a lady of good breeding in etiquette class when he was 15 and autistically applied it to every woman he ever met regardless of social class for the rest of his life" Bonnet

... but what I love even more this time around is, that we got the woman who's basically RESPONSIBLE for the whole damn show as it is because she came across that strange Gentleman Pirate and told her genius writer husband about it!!!

Coming full circle with that one and i couldn't love DJ more (and I fucking love him to the end of the world and back already!)
