my thoughts on The Murderbot Show:
idk man
ā€Ž
#i pressed play with the same energy you'd get from someone trying to disarm a bomb#it looks fun enough. and the changes are fine. i guess#i think i'm still hung up on the CGI#i dont. like it.#which is nothing new tbh this is why i rarely watch live action stuff#i want to say that i would have liked it if i wasn't so attached to the books already. but idkkkkk#my vision for the scavengers reign style murderbot show seems to hinder my ability to enjoy the show's visuals. rip i guess#the murderbot show#murderbot#mbtv#i think i'll try and write down my proper thoughts once the entire season has released bc#uuuuuugh so far my biggest concern is how they're handling the whole "space hippies PresAux'' thing#like. i wouldn't be surprised if them presenting PresAux in such an unserious manner is so viewers can be surprised once they#get down to proper business or whatever. at least. that's what i'm hoping for#but i also wouldn't be surprised if the adaptation just. dumbed them down a bit. for some reason#same with whatever's going on with Mensah. i feel like i just haven't seen enough of the changes to form a concrete opinion on that#i love how they did Ratthi. he's perfect 10/10 no notes#i enjoy what they're doing with Gurathin (even though i very much preferred 2nd gen immigrant Gurathin whose knowledge of the CorpRim#comes from horror stories passed down by his parents) (that's still my book interpretation of him)#Still torn on Pin-Lee and Arada getting with Ratthi like. yknow what actually i don't care about that one.#i prefer to keep my romances fully in the background + in fanworks but. who gaf#uhhhh what else is there#oh god i fear the day that blond lady comes on screen. i hope to they handle whatever's going on there well#i'll forgive the crime of adding her uncomfortable comments to the show if someone tells her off for all that!!!!!!!#and while i enjoy the visual style of sanctuary moon. i'm still surprised it seems to be some space adventure show?????#i was expecting it to be more of a legal drama or something. with moodier visuals but. whatever i guess that's a small detail#i'll be fine as long as we have the solicitor and her bodyguard#mmm yea i don't have anything else for now. send post#ramblings

why is "yeah TOS was so low budget they had nothing but 2 pennies and glitter glue and a dream" such a common sentiment on this site. Star Trek was the most expensive show on air at the time. it cost huge amounts of money and constantly went over budget, and it was constantly on the verge of cancellation in big part because of this. the amount of money being poured into it was a part of why it did get cancelled- it was getting low ratings and consistently costing the studio an arm and a leg each episode
I get that the effects and everything in Star Trek look low budget by today's standards, but it was anything but low budget. if you want to see what low budget sci-fi looked like in the late 60s, then I suggest Doctor Who, which ran on a budget of pocket lint, shoelaces, and a dream

if yall haven't seen it already, i super recommend this ongoing youtube series by the movie rabbit hole that unravels a lot of those instances where a movie claims to "have zero CGI". it really uplifts the knowledge that practical effects and CGI really go hand in hand, except that the CGI side is often left in the dust when it comes to acknowledging the work that goes into making these bombastic movies.
this is the first video, where he discusses multiple movies but mainly top gun maverick, one of said movies that claims it has no CGI.
youtube
the second video just came out, and focuses on christopher nolan movies, another set of movies that people claim have very little CGI.
youtube
in the future, i believe he also plans to cover the injustice that stunt performers often face, which is related to this topic. in pursuit of being able to say a movie "has no CGI whatsoever!" or that an actor "did all their own stunts!", you end up leaving out the CG artists and stunt performers, very important parts of the industry that are often hardly acknowledged while everyone goes nuts over how real and authentic the movie is. movies are a team effort! let's not leave anyone behind! especially not the people whom the movies literally could not be made without!

ik I'm kind of late to it, but I just watched the live action atla series!!! I've only watched the first so far, but I have some things to say!!!
(Also, please keep in mind it's been ages since I watched the cartoon, so any comparisons I make are based on my memory).
Okay, I'd just like to say I love the casting so far. Like, Katara and Sokka are so cartoon-accurate (is that a thing?), and while Aang does look like he's approximately 7 years old, his casting was also good.
The casting for Zuko was different than how I'd imagined him to look if he was a real person, but so far he seems good too :) although I am slightly concerned about his facial expressions because um.
Anyway!!! I love love love Katara so far, and though I wish she'd stand up to Sokka and his stupid patriarchal beliefs (I don't know how to explain how he acts at this point any better tbh) a bit more, she's so sweet and the way she immediately cares for Aang is just <3<3<3
I'm going to be honest, Aang flying at the beginning looked so unrealistic the cgi was not cgi-ing at that point I think (I also have no idea if that was actually cgi or smth else but let's ignore that!!! Hopefully you know what I mean). But I love how they did Katara's waterbending because, wow, that little sphere of water she made levitate after Aang told her how; I thought it looked so cool.
The firebending!!! I don't know how to describe it other than 'cool,' because it just looked so realistic and :O, you know what I mean???
The Avatar State looked amazing too!! Aang did look a bit strange (I think) when he was flying during it, but other than that, the way his markings lit up was just like the cartoon; it genuinely looked so powerful.
Anyway !!! I will probably also rant about the rest of the episodes when I get to those :)

Wild Blue Yonder gave vibes that I'd only felt in DW audio dramas/books - in the sense that it went to a place the series doesn't usually go to, played with some really excellent horror elements, and used monsters that are, hm, hard to do right on screen

continuously horrified how they went back and re-edited episodes iv, v, vi to include the ugliest cgi wide shots imaginable for literally no reason

There are those who like Doctor Who sincerely and those who only like it ironically and just want it to be perpetually low budget so they can laugh at the poor FXs.

in general the characterization was dogshit in salvation, i really liked the story and i liked christian bale as future john connor but the characters were boring as fuck. do not even get me started on kate, it was such a downgrade from rise of the machines, literally the useless woman to stand there and stare with sad eyes and be pregnant in the background

I had a dream last night where I was watching a live action movie for chainsaw man???? And Aki was barely in it. There was a whole plot going on without him, when he should have been apart of it (since the actual story goes a little bit without him in the beginning) BUT IN MY DREAM DENJI WAS HIRED AS A DEVIL HUNTER BUT AKI WAS STILL NOWHERE TO BE FOUND!! So I’m like ā€œoh okay maybe I just don’t recognize him yet. This is live action. Maybe he’ll look a lil differentā€ que in this GUY who looks NOTHING like Aki. They literally used cgi on this man to make him LOOK MORE like Aki???? And it was horrendous. The cgi was so bad. They tried making Aki look like an absolute Chad with a huge jaw and Elijah Wood kind of blue eyes. And his top knot (which was also cgi????) was just a little tiny itty bitty wisp of hair sticking out at the back of his head. And they added red streaks in his hair????? (The red matched Angel devil’s hair though so that was a lil cute) And he just didn’t talk. He didn’t talk at all. He just stared you with them big ol eyes. Gojo glow in the dark eyes. And I was SO ANGRY LMAO bc I was like ā€œTHIS ISNT ACCURATE AT ALL!!! THIS IS WHY LIVE ACTION SUCKS!!!ā€ And then I woke up. Thank you for coming to my dream talk again.

[2021 Mortal Kombat Movie AU]
I think Shang Tsung granted Bi-Han his immortality after he killed Hanzo & the Shirai Ryu, so this time Bi-Han adds one more thing to their agreement: his brother will also become immortal. (Kuai Liang is probably the only thing he feels something for)
He wants Kuai to fight beside him, but Kuai can't bear to see what his brother has become in action so Bi-Han convinces Shang Tsung to let him go and live his life, even if he's not happy about it. Bi-Han is capable and vicious enough to do whatever the sorcerer asks of him on his own.
So Kuai spends centuries in different countries, doing different jobs, eventually settling down somewhere in America. Maybe he owns a farm, lol. Living in a remote location would help him go unnoticed on how he's not aging. All the while, Bi-Han keeps an eye on him from afar, getting rid of people who get too close to blowing Kuai's cover, not that he knows about it.
Anyway, after Cole escapes Bi-Han for the first time, Shang Tsung decides to play dirty and has Bi-Han bring Kuai Liang into the fold. He glamors a kombatant mark onto Kuai and has him run into Sonya while "escaping" Bi-Han. He joins her, Cole and Kano from there on. He strikes up a friendship with Sonya, but it's Cole he really hits it off with. Kuai was already doubting his mission but it's getting worse every moment.
They do the whole arcana thing, and the defenders are kind of put off when he "unlocks" his ice powers, but he's nothing like the creeping menace Bi-Han is so they write it off.
Kuai does his best to support Cole as he tries and fails to unlock his. Having lived so long without regular human contact, Kuai can come off as a bit intense, but he makes up for it with how earnest and genuine he is. (Cole might be starting to doubt his sexuality, a little.)
Kano still betrays the team but he runs into Kuai when he's about to destroy the relic that keeps up the force field. Kuai has a change of heart and attempts to stop Kano, but they destroy the relic anyways during their fight. Kano gives Kuai "a chance", to keep what happened to himself as long as he won't get in Kano's way again. Afraid of what the sorcerer will do, Kuai goes with Kano. He stands by Bi-Han's side before the defenders, to the tune of betrayed shouts. Sonya seems angriest while Cole is just disappointed.
The next time he's seen again is in the final scene with Bi-Han. Allison and Emily are still frozen, but the reason they aren't completely encased in a block of ice like Bi-Han might've done by himself is Kuai's coaxing. They can still be saved by design.
Hanzo's appearance was a bit funny imo, so I'd turn that into just him "possessing" Cole to a degree, or enhancing his abilities/guiding him like Sento does for Kenshi. Even with all that, Bi-Han gets Cole into a "say your last words" position. So Cole does a bit of a BotR speech that finally gives Kuai the push he needs and he turns on Bi-Han. He freezes Bi-Han solid but has to keep at it lest Bi-Han break free. He tells Cole to tend to his family, and that he'll deal with Bi-Han.
The defenders arrive, thaw Allison and Emily and get out of there, reluctantly leaving Kuai behind. The rest goes as normal.
After Shang Tsung is defeated, Bi-Han and Kuai go missing. The good ending is the brothers' lifespans becoming normal in the absence of Shang Tsung (if they were 30 they still have like 40 years to live), and Kuai taking steps to rehabilitate Bi-Han. Maybe his path crosses with Cole again, someday.
The sad ending is the brothers perishing immediately without Shang Tsung's magic, lol
(I wanted to make Kuai the Kitana to Cole's Lui Kang but the plot had a mind of its own, lol)

okay i just marathoned the entirety of ATLA live action & i might do an actual review of it explaining my thoughts more in depth, but the TLDR version basically boils down to this:
if you want to watch Avatar: The Last Airbender, just go watch the 2005 cartoon
#i was trying to keep an open mind & all that cuz of OPLA (my beloved) but. holy shit it was actually worse than i expected :/#like what were they thinking. did they use AI to write this or are the writers just like. really shitty#notes: they linger too much on random bullshit & refuse to move character development along#they tell when they should be showing & when they DO show it's for stuff that benefited from brief environmental storytelling in the OG#the plot drags so hard it was basically stagnant#there were some fun things but like. those things could've been funner if they'd been given the time other useless stuff was taking up#they changed so many minor details that really don't matter in order to make them more important#but this failed spectacularly because now there's just. stupid bullshit clogging up the plot??#instead of having 10 minute monologues 3 times an episode about plot irrelevant things#they should have taken a page out of the original's book & kept minor details to a minimum & focused on ACTUAL PLOT#SO MUCH CGI. LIKE I KNOW THEY NEED IT BUT COME ON. EVEN THE CHARACTERS?????? WHO ARE JUST STANDING THERE????????#they were given 8 hours & almost all of it was Aang angsting (lol) over being the avatar & not practicing actual bending#& then they ended the plot too early so they had to fill in the last like 20 minutes with something else#so they made up random lore that literally makes no sense. & overexplained all of it to the point i was blanking out from boredom#i think this is why i didn't enjoy Korra. they over explain the spirit world stuff & avatar powers & bending#that plus i just don't vibe with the aesthetic#being a writer is a curse because when i dislike something it's because i know exactly what went wrong & why#it's always with the analyzing & the judging & the internal note taking#even when i really try i can't just enjoy shit for fun

Instead of bringing back William Hartnell with cgi or David Bradly (I like David Bradley but it’s already been done with 12) or whatever it is they mean when they say William Hartnell will be back with Ncuti Gatwa, why don’t they just bring back Ian (with an actual scene with the doctor this time) you know an actual living connection to the first ever episode/season/tardis team. Man’s clearly willing to come back and it would be much more emotionally satisfying than cgi Bill Hartnell/David Bradley.
