Going through a straight up comical amount of irritating situations to get the stupid 4* guaranteed ticket from the welcome to sekai campaign. It Will Be Mine.
#I’m resuming this tomorrow it’s been hours now I’m just mad#I’m home because my parents are moving to a different state and I needed to pack whatever was left#and for some reason we just keep old devices when we’re done with them#so I borrow an adapter to allow me to connect my ancient unworking iPad mini to my laptop#factory reset it. i have to reset an old email to access the old Apple id to fully reset it.#it won’t connect to the wifi so I have to reset the settings. i find out it’s too old to run pjsk.#i find an old phone that should work. i reset it as well. I’m able to download pjsk & it takes 20 minutes.#pjsk crashes everytime I try to open it. i attempt to run bluestacks on my computer. bluestacks doesn’t have 64 bit for mac yet.#i get a free trial of parallels and download windows onto my laptop. this takes 40 minutes.#i try to download and run bluestacks on that. m1 macs apparently can’t run bluestacks 64 bit through parallels.#i go find the final old phone that I had forgotten about. it takes forever to charge because the charging port is fucked up. i reset it as#well. it can’t connect to wifi. i try a hotspot on my current phone. service is too awful. i try to do wifi sharing from my laptop.#you have to be connected to the router via a cable for that to work.#at this point it has been like 3 hours. I’m giving up because I’ve been down this route before#when I attempted to run 32 bit steam games on m1 mac#(wine64 doesn’t exist for m1 macs yet -> attempt to run boot camp -> boot camp isn’t a thing anymore on Apple silicon -> attempt to run#several different programs that allow me to run windows on a mac. none of them work. ->#look into linux & give up. -> attempt to implement the unfinished/unbottled wine64 code thru terminal. ->#fuck up and delete some important file & have to fix that (misery inducing) -> keep trying. i think I downloaded a Mac coding program at#some point? i realize I have zero coding knowledge and this is a mistake. -> give up and purchase crossover. game doesn’t even work. ->#3 months later update to the latest OS so I can have enough storage to play psychonauts 2. find out the $60 crossover#purchase was a bad idea because ‘heehee crossover doesn’t work on that buy the new version’ (fuck crossover).#my toxic trait is my belief that I can figure out anything via google and sheer stubbornness. usually this is true. occasionally there are#exceptions to this rule. most of them are because owning Apple products is a mistake.#i think if I reset the router tomorrow I can solve this problem but I can also just go elsewhere with better service or wait until I’m home#now it’s a matter of pride. and also free 4*/I have nothing better to do because I’m stuck here until Tuesday.#<- this is all normal behavior by the way. who doesn’t spend 8 hours ramming their head against a problem every once and a while. enrichment#mine#oh I forgot. i also looked into cloning the app but that would cost money for something that might not even work.#‘just log out and make an alt’ and risk losing my account? A Summary: The Spirealm | 致命游戏 (Kaleidoscope of Death 死亡万花筒 Live Action) & Why You Should (Eventually) Watch It
Talk about the most short-lived drama release ever, not even totalling two hours if I recall. Creating this summary as I've seen a handful of confused friends, so here it goes!
It's going to be a long review because I sped through all 78 episodes and only properly watched the first two doors, but I got you. You'll get both the brief book rundown and the drama parts!
If you just wanna see the bromance (LOVE) parts please skip to section 4!!!!
1. Overview
Title: The Spirealm (kinda awful I'm sorry it's a mouthful) or 致命游戏 which means fatal game
Adapted From: Danmei (BL) Kaleidoscope of Death by Xi Zixu
Novel Prints: There are GORGEOUS Thai, Vietnamese, Simplified and Traditional Chinese versions printed, AND Singapore publisher Rosmei has signed the license for the ENGLISH version, probably going on sale this year (preview is here). You can still access fan translations by Taida on I think wordpress and someone else on Tumblr sorry bad memory (they did half and half each) if you'd like to read it for context. It is one of my FAVE danmeis EVER and I am a die-hard OG book fan, check out my full danmei review here.
Total Episodes: 78 (20 minutes each with the exception of last episode which 10 minutes, with several BTS not that I think we will get to see all of them yet)
Where to Watch (LOL): Erm considering that iQIYI China AND International took the episodes down, there is no legal way to watch this, BUT thanks to some cnetz with super fast and great wifi, we managed to get ripped HD versions without subs. iQIYI is very hard on copyright though, they've taken down several subbed and unsubbed versions already on YouTube, but you should type the titles of show into Twitter and the top tags will tell you where to access the raws and very little subbed episodes, that may also be taken down at any point. I have the Chinese raws but as it's hosted on a cloud, I had to pay to access it.
Main Characters: Lin Qiushi & Ruan Nanzhu/Ruan Baijie (in the novel) and Ling Jiushi & Ruan Nanzhu/Ruan Baijie (in the drama)
Produced By: iQIYI so for SURE they won't film it fully BL even if the original is, but I've seen enough bromance cuts
Main Actors: Xia Zhiguang (Ruan Nanzhu/Ruan Baijie) + Huang Junjie (Ling Jiushi)
2. Summary
Book (drama follows closely if not removing the supernatural premises): Lin Qiushi, a designer, opens the door to his home one day from inside and sees 12 iron doors outside. Confused, he opens one of them and arrives at a snow covered village in the mid of winter, and meets Ruan Baijie, who's a pretty, unusually tall and whiny/timid woman. They realise that they're in a horrifying door game, and they'll have to find a door and a key to get out, while battling a long-haired, human-eating deity. They, along with a few others, have to survive day after day until they get out, and on the first night, two people have died in gory ways. Ruan Baijie and Lin Qiushi partner each other, and despite seemingly timid and crying all the time, she saves Lin Qiushi a few times mysteriously, and Lin Qiushi finds himself trusting in Ruan Baijie.
They get through the door together and when they leave successfully, Lin Qiushi realizes that the people who died in the door will die in real life by some freak accident too - car accidents, forced suicides, a robbery gone wrong, a lift trapped in the air and going ablaze, and more. That night, Lin Qiushi wakes up to see a super handsome and tall Ruan Nanzhu at his bedside and this man feels familiar to him, but he can't put a finger on it. All he can think of when Ruan Nanzhu says his name is Ruan Baijie (ahem he would later find out who it is of course). Ruan Nanzhu takes him to his mansion in the suburbs where he meets a group of other people just like them, who're forced to go through the doors for survival. Ruan Nanzhu then invites him to join Obsidian, his organization.
Through various doors, Lin Qiushi grows and supports a super intelligent and powerful Ruan Nanzhu, falls in love with him, gets through many many scary doors with him and some of their other team members, makes friends, loses them to the cruelty of the doors as they ponder over what the door means, and what being alive/dying means.
And at the end of it, at the end of of it all, when they're all good and living their life, Lin Qiushi also finds out what Ruan Nanzhu's secret is, and the lengths to which Ruan Nanzhu went to, just to be with him.
Drama: Ling Jiushi is a VR game designer who gets pulled into a game, and he meets Ruan Baijie (in his male form) right off the bat (SO NOT CROSSDRESSING I AM SAD). All the parts are actually the same as the novel, albeit with the game setting and Ling Jiushi and Ruan Nanzhu's identity adjustments to suit the game premise. Most of the other doors and their lines are the same, just that the ending is a bit more confusing than it could be. There's a big bad as well and they actually show the opposing organizations when in the novel, these other organizations aside from Obsidian didn't even actually have a face or goal to them.

Ruan Nanzhu/Ruan Baijie: MY HANDSOME CROSSDRESSING INTELLIGENT ALOOF BUT WHINY (WHEN IT COMES TO LIN QIUSHI) SASSY BOSS!!!! He's super mysterious and super thick-skinned too, and all he wants is Lin Qiushi's attention the moment he meets him. He's intrigued by Lin Qiushi's calm and his brains and the way he handles things, and has a lot of trust for him right from the get-go. This is also shown in the drama itself. As the leader of Obsidian, he cares a lot for his team members and his friends even if he doesn't show it most of the time, and the last thing he wants to do is lose Lin Qiushi, and he would do ANYTHING for Lin Qiushi, ANYTHING!!! Just look at him whining:
Ling Jiushi (Lin Qiushi): In the novel he's super calm, has quite a lot of brains, a little bit of a blur in the beginning but he's super smart as well. Worries a lot for Ruan Nanzhu and is also a loyal friend to some of his only friends, and feels a lot when he loses them. Falls gradually in love with Ruan Nanzhu in the novel, like they just belong together. In this drama, Ling Jiushi holds that same trust for Ruan Nanzhu, but in demeanour he seems a bit more like a klutz and and not as cool as he was in the novel, but I guess it's acceptable. Literally like the only thing he loves more than RNZ (maybe) is his cat Chestnut LOL and RNZ is NOT really happy about that but Chestnut LOVES RNZ
Yixie and Qianli: CUTEST TWINS ;-; WHO TREAT RNZ and LQS as their big brothers LOOK AT THEM BOWING AND RNZ/LJS like parents LMAO

4. ALL FAVE BROMANCE MOMENTS + TROPES

5. Settings
They REALLY OUTDID THEMSELVES. THIS JUST FROM DOORS 1-6:
THEY LOOK EXACTLY LIKE THE NOVEL DESCRIBED!!!!
6. Overall Thoughts
PROS: This was NOT a cheap production, I'm telling you, they followed the cases very well and there're a lot of super recognisable lines, if not ALL of them, even if they changed the cases a little. I think they did it because in the novel originally, the author DOES leave a lot of details hanging like someone dies and you know he had a background and there are some shady things happening but the author NEVER actually goes into detail. So the drama did their best to cover these loopholes, even if it felt a little awkward at times. Money went into settings and attires and every damn thing, this looks EXPENSIVE. And if you've ever imagined each door and the bosses inside in your head, you might have felt chills go down your spine because damn did they really colour the book's settings for me (despite its differences). DID I MENTION that Xia Zhiguang really got the damn memo and he was a passable Ruan Nanzhu/Ruan Baijie who knew how to turn on his BL eyes. PLUS they really did some of the character deaths really well - they're technically some of the biggest parts of this story so ;-; (not two main of course)
CONS (maybe): They did away with the supernatural/horror premise and replaced it with a GAME premise, which means that there's a scientific element to it and the try to explain away stuff with the game, including the ending. I don't 100% get the ending, but the feel/vibe is about the same. Might not be for hardcore reader fans tho! They skipped out on a couple of doors, some of which were my faves, but it's fine, it's long enough LOL. They give away/explain some of the clues and surprises super early which means you don't get that added boom at the back as well. Despite that, I have to say they tried to round up the loopholes from the book as much as they could and give it an explanation while tying elements/conspiracies across doors (probably also to save cast fees LOL). And as always it's not a solid ending, it's an open confusing one, and even more confusing than the book itself because THERE IS NO CERTAIN HAPPILY EVER AFTER WITH HUBBY for it (there is in the book tho, they live together happily every after). Secondl,y, I'd say HJJ's acting is a bit stiff and OOC compared to the novel, but Xia Zhiguang really made up for it.

plot : when you gave your nine-year-old brother a phone to call you with should he ever need to, he used to pester you with it- but, once the novelty faded, the calls came to a gradual stop.
foolishly, you took the peace for granted.

author’s note : this one is quite heavy- angst is my favourite to write, and i lay it on thick. just because i’ve written it, that doesn’t mean you have to read it. <3

you collapse on-top of your boyfriend, breathing heavily; he grins something blissful, placing a hand on both sides of your head and manoeuvring it to his lips to press a firm kiss to your hair.
“i love you so much,” he declares, allowing your head to gently fall against his shoulder, resting his cheek against your forehead and allowing his eyes to close for a beat, releasing a long, slightly winded sigh. “feelin’ better, now, huh?”
you hum something noncommittal, slightly dazed, tracing light lines on the bare skin of his chest. “it’s hard not to, isn’t it?”
jj snorts, head flopping back against the pillow, eyes half-lidded and weary, an arm wrapping around your waist and squeezing ever-so-slightly. “i’m gonna get the best sleep known to earth, jesus christ. you know how to put a man through his paces, don’t ‘ya?”
“practice,” you muse, the corner of your lip quirking upwards.
“practice, huh? with who?” he asks, lifting his head to look at you mock-aggressively, tousled and slightly damp blond waves descending over his forehead. “you got somethin’ to tell me?”
“you’ll never know,” you tease in response- and he will never know, because it’s at that moment that your phone starts to blare on the nightstand beside you.
you groan exasperatedly, propping yourself up on your elbows to blindly tap around the wood surface for it- when you find it, the contact name is already greeting you, displayed in bold, unignorable white letters in the top third of the screen.
home.
you pick up the phone before jj so much as has the chance to ask who’s at the other end of it.
a few months ago, you gave your brother, max, a phone. nothing special- just one of your old, battered iphone 5s that for some reason you still had, with no wifi or internet because you point-blank refuse to give your nine-year-old brother unlimited access to the internet- just so he was able to contact you should he need to.
the oldest of your three siblings, he’s the one you trusted with it; eli’s six and lila’s only two, so you doubt either of them would really know how to use it, anyways. at first, after you showed him how, he abused it- calling you non-stop, day-in, day-out- but now, the novelty’s faded. he only calls you unless there’s a real reason for him to; and now, apparently there is.
typically, it’s to get information to relay to your mum when she needs it, or to ask when you’ll next be home, considering how often you’re out with jj and the rest of your friends- therefore, the last thing you’re expecting upon the call connecting is the sound of lila’s deafening cries, max’s voice, uncharacteristically feeble and timid, offering a small, “hello? are you there?”
you sit up instantly, tearing out of jj’s grip to swing your legs over the edge of the bed, sighing. “yeah, i’m here. what’s up?”
“sorry, is this a bad time? it’s just-” lila screams again, and max pauses, only regaining his voice a few seconds later. “we haven’t seen mum all day. we’re all really hungry, and i’ve tried ordering food but i can’t, and lila’s upset and eli’s not come out of his room for ages-”
“woah, hang on,” you say slowly, calmly, turning up the volume of your phone. “when’d you last see her?”
“last night,” your little brother responds instantly. “she left us some cash and a note saying to just order something in, but i’ve tried and i can’t, this phone won’t connect to the wifi and she’s taken hers with her, i think.”
shit.
“any idea where she’s gone?” you ask, turning back to jj and nodding towards the door- instantly, he gets the hint. he jumps out of bed, wriggling into his boxers as he jumps around the room in search of some clothes. you’re already picking a shirt up off of the floor, placing the call on speaker as you throw it on.
“nope,” max’s voice drifts through the room, popping the ‘p’. “she didn’t say anything, just… gone.”
and, like a fool, you’d never installed your mum’s contact on the old, battered iphone 5- originally, you didn’t want her to know that max had it.
you’d have told her yourself, if you’d been smart enough to consider a scenario like this.
lila wails again, and you can practically hear your brother’s wince on the other side of the phone.
“you said eli’s been in his room all day, yeah? is lila safe for you to go and check on him? where’s she at?”
“in her crib,” max says, and you can hear the creaking of springs, swiftly followed by small footsteps. “i’ll check on him now, give me a sec.”
the footsteps stop, and seconds later are replaced by muffled voices- max’s is still somewhat clear, but even though eli’s isn’t, you can hear the exhaustion in it.
“he’s fine,” your brother’s voice follows up a moment after, fully intelligible once more. “tired, though.”
“tell him he can take a nap if he wants to,” you say simply, shimmying into some shorts, jj doing the same behind you. “i’m coming, alright? we’ll be there soon, just hang in there. fifteen minutes, tops.”
“‘kay, thanks.”
“you’ve got nothing to thank me for, buddy. i’ll see you soon, okay? i love you.”
“love you too,” max replies, slightly steadier now. “i’ll- i’ll try to calm lila down.”
“good idea. i’ll be there soon, i promise.”
max is the one to hang up- for a second, all you can do is close your eyes and take a breath.
“she’s disappeared again, then?” jj’s voice comes, unfailingly determined, though you can hear a pinch of disbelief in it.
you sigh, opening your eyes and turning to look at him, something akin to exhausted exasperation swirling in them. “looks like it.”
“i’ll grab some chips for them, you get in the twinkie,” is the response you get, your boyfriend not so much as missing a single beat.
you can’t help but kiss him on your way out of the bedroom, sliding some shoes on your bare feet and snatching the keys for the twinkie off of the coffee table before swinging open the front door and bee-lining for the van, phone jammed in your pocket.
you’re years max’s senior, and even you have no clue where your mum is. you know things about her that they don’t- you know the sort of things she gets up to- but she doesn’t have a regular place to go. she just kind of… wanders. goes off with whatever man looks at her twice, doesn’t come back for hours- even days, when you’ve taken them off of her before, because you have. you’ve taken them to the chateau, time after time, and when she inevitably promises you that it’s her wake-up call, that she’ll change, you’re obligated to fold.
as soon as the circumstances are right, you’re sure you’ll get them out of there- but, until then, this is all you can do. be there when they need you- show max that he can and should call you, and that you’ll respond, you’ll show for him, them, when nobody else will.
jj joins you shortly after you put the keys in the ignition- as soon as the passenger door slams shut, you’re gone, flooring out of the land surrounding the chateau and veering off into the road.
you know full-well that you’re speeding but don’t care in the slightest; the speed cameras don’t work in this part of the cut, and police don’t patrol it. the road you live on is mostly quiet, just elderly people and the odd family, like yours, so there’s no reason for anyone to be over there- nobody to commit the crimes they police.
“i can’t believe her, man,” jj scoffs from beside you, practically vibrating in his seat.
one of the main things, if not the main thing, you love about your boyfriend is his love for your siblings. growing up an only child, he never really had anyone around, when he was young; nobody to bear it all with, nobody to even distract himself with by protecting. when you’re at work, or otherwise occupied, he’s the one picking up the slack- play-fighting with the boys, helping them with their homework as well as he can, getting lila to sleep, helping eli get into his pyjamas at night.
while you never plan on having kids- especially after all of this- if you did, you could see him being everything his own dad wasn’t to them.
“…ow many times has she said she wouldn’t do this shit again? just take off?”
“how many times has she promised she’ll change?” you snort bitterly in agreement, guiding the car down a corner, into a gravelly road a few minutes away from yours. “it’s bullshit. it’s all bullshit.”
“like, how can you even do that to your own kids, bro? i swear to god, i’ll-”
it all becomes white noise. you don’t mean to stop listening to him, but your ears take you back to that phone call: max’s weary little greeting, eli’s utterly drained voice, lila’s hysteria.
the last of which, you realise, is still continuing upon the front door of your house opening.
“hey,” you nod, smile something a little bit weak around the edges, bringing him in for a short hug. “told you we’d come, didn’t i?”
“hi- jj!”
“hey, big man,” jj grins, charming and outwardly unaffected as ever, as if he wasn’t just seething in the twinkie a mere forty-five seconds ago. “you holding up alright?”
you release max, ears turning up at the sound of your little sister.
“you guys go and pack some stuff and get eli, alright?” you call back to them, already stepping through the food wrappers and used plastic cups in search of her room.
as soon as you open the door of it, your heart breaks.
lila’s standing in the corner of her crib, wide and teary eyes rapidly darting around the room, as if perpetually searching- her eyes lock on you, and her face only seems to screw up further. she toddles as fast as she can to the front fence, omitting an almighty wail as she does, little arms outstretching as far as they can towards you, a new round of scalding tears pouring down her face.
you’re with her in an instant, lifting her by her sides and cradling you to your chest, her head instantly worming into your neck.
“hey, sweetheart- shh, you’re alright, i’ve got you. i know, it’s confusing, huh? you’re hungry?” you murmur as she cries, lowering a kiss to the top of her head.
poor lila can’t even speak, just gasp over another sob- you tighten her arms around her, rocking back-and-forth.
“i know, i know- shh, you’re okay. we’re gonna get you some food and new clothes, yeah?”
as carefully as you can with her still anchored to your front, you bustle around the room, grabbing a clean diaper, the last remaining clean pacifier and a single change of clothes- there are backups of everything else you’ll need at the chateau- and stuffing them into a small, pink rucksack in the corner of the room.
you sling the bag over your shoulder and press another kiss to her hair before swiftly exiting the room, eyes landing on eli, who’s currently fastened to jj’s back, your boyfriend’s arms with handles of bags hanging off of them looped around his knees; max stands just to the side, holding up the old phone.
“should i take this with me? or…”
“yeah, you should,” you nod, ruffling his hair. “you did a good job, calling me. i’m proud of you.”
max just smiles something slightly tired, and your heart promptly cleaves in half yet again at the expression. no nine-year-old should hold that much exhaustion, that much defeat; the curse that befell you is falling onto him.
“can we go now?” he asks, gesturing vaguely to the bags piled in jj’s arms. “we’ve packed, and everything.”
you take a look around the house- the slight smell of cigarette smoke permeating the air, the food boxes and other miscellaneous objects blanketing the floor- and nod again.
“yeah, we can. c’mon.”
as soon as you step out of the house, lights blind you- car headlights, specifically, and you quickly hand lila off to jj, who has by now gotten both of the boys secured in the twinkie and bags of chips in their hands, and request he do the same for lila before staring at the car as it comes to a slow stop.
your mum isn’t drunk when she steps out of the car- she learned that lesson around the time you turned fifteen- but it’s obvious that at some point recently, she has been.
“of course, you come back now,” you snort in almost incredulous disbelief, clapping sarcastically. “well done, mum. who’s this, then?”
you point to a man who’s gotten out of the car alongside her, all muscle and tattoos and outgrown hair; your mum rolls her eyes, black eyeliner smudged.
“it doesn’t matter who he is,” she says offhandedly. “where are my kids?”
“of course it matters,” you shake your head, wrinkling your nose slightly. “and they’re in the van. i figured that if you’re too busy to look after them, then i probably should.”
your mum seems to stop for a second, eyes roaming over you, as if she hasn’t seen you in years- and she hasn’t, you suppose. not for long, anyway.
and then:
“what, so you’re just going to take my kids?”
you hum, nodding. “pretty much. you can’t just leave them at home all day, mum, jesus. they’re kids. little fucking kids, and you just went off-grid.”
“i left them some money,” she protests, waving a hand, “to order food with. they were fine.”
“yeah, and how were they meant to order it, huh? with what phone?”
it doesn’t hold the fire that it used to; just the slight air of annoyance only achieved after repeating something so many times, and it not being listened to, that you don’t even have the energy to properly fight the point anymore.
“what, they don’t have one?” mum asks. “max is nine, i thought by now…”
“did you ever buy him one?” you ask, and after a beat of telling silence, “no, you didn’t, so they don’t have one. what, you think a nine-year-old is pulling a nine-to-five at the country club?”
max has an old, beaten-down iphone 5 that your mum doesn’t even know about, purely to be used in situations like these. that’s it. no wifi, no internet access in the slightest- just your contact and some games you had installed back when you were using it.
“i need to get them home,” you say when you get no response, sighing in bitter resignation. “they haven’t eaten all day, and lila needs changing. just… have fun tonight, yeah? with man number eighty-seven, or something, i don’t fucking know. no point in calling me asking for them back, i’ll decide on my own terms.”
you don’t even spare them another glance before getting in the twinkie- jj hands a now-whimpering lila to you, and you settle her on your lap, engaging her with the remaining chips in the small bag as your boyfriend begins to trundle out of the driveway.
the drive home is remarkably quiet. nobody really says much; eli’s dozing off, the side of his head smushed against the window, and max is just staring out of his own, face slightly clenched.
jj’s got a hand on your thigh, thumb stoking small lines into your skin, but it doesn’t do much- not when all that your little siblings have had to eat today is a bag of chips that two of them are still eating, lila clearly hasn’t been changed all day and your mum hadn’t been seen in so long that max had lost all hope in her returning and had called you as a last resort.
you feel sick to your fucking stomach.
eventually, though, the frame of the chateau comes into view. you step out of the twinkie as soon as it comes to a stop, grab lila’s bag and secure her to your hip, head inside- and, because food’s the top priority, you bee-line straight for the kitchen to make a placating sippy-cup of milk, giving it to her as you take her to your and jj’s bedroom to change her into something clean.
it doesn’t take long- you work with urgency- but, even then, you step back into the living room to the sight of eli and max sitting on the sofa, plates of leftover food on their laps- you press a kiss to jj’s cheek, mumbling a small ‘thank you’ as he hands you a bowl of berries for lila.
you sit on the sofa besides eli, watch with bitter pride as she progressively gets less and less fussy as she eats them, stare in exhausted awe at jj as he joins you and begins engaging eli in light conversation about his schooling, all casual and seemingly perpetually energetic.
later, when all of the kids are fed and changed into pyjamas, max grabs lila and places her between himself and eli, covers the three of them in a small, slightly frayed blanket- to which jj quickly rushes into your shared room and drapes the duvet of your bed over the three of them.
they fall asleep to you murmuring soft words to them, your hand slowly carding through their hair periodically; arms wrap around you from behind, and you turn your head into jj’s shoulder, sighing.
“they’re good now,” he murmurs quietly, placing a kiss to the curve of your neck. “you’ve got them, yeah? we’ve got them. they’re fed, they’re clean, they’re safe, they’re asleep. you’re done now, okay? you can rest.”
“thank you,” you whisper. it’s all you can say, really- he helped eli and max pack, carried eli on his back out of the house, had plates of food going into them within minutes of you returning; he’s there, a rock. “thank you, thank you, thank you.”
“no need to thank me,” is all you get in response, his voice firm yet simultaneously gentle, kind. “they deserve it all, yeah? ‘n you’re giving it to them.”
and, like he has been the whole night, he’s there, a rock, as you inevitably crumble.

Around six o'clock last night the SIM card in my phone failed without me realizing it, and I was immune to text messages or phone calls for about twelve hours. Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on your point of view) my carrier realized this and this morning started frantically texting me that my text messages did not work, which was very funny. It's fixed now, for the most part, though I'm still having some issues that may be more to do with being in the office today and on the work wifi, which is sometimes hostile to local wildlife (my cellphone).
Why am I in the office? Because my work laptop has a big fuckoff crack in the housing and seems to be starting to lose wifi entirely, so I'm meeting with our IT guy to get it replaced. In the meantime I'm on Laptop Vuitton which doesn't have many of the things I need it to have (access to my work shared drive, for one) so I'm sorta marking time.
It's just as well we're doing it today though, because Xfinity let me know that our home wifi may experience significant outages today and tomorrow due to maintenance work they're doing on our lines.
To recap: my work laptop won't talk to my home internet, my home phone wasn't talking to anyone and now won't talk to my work internet, my home laptop doesn't have work access, and Mercury went into retrograde either last night or this morning depending on who you ask.
So that's how my August is going.

Bit of an update for everyone plus some artwork. Scroll to the bottom if you're just looking for the picture.
Hello! I finally have access to the internet again after like a week! I moved into my new place for the year, only to find out our wifi had not been set up so I had to order in some things to get it working. I had to wait a week for things to arrive but my friends and I finally got it set up this afternoon so now I'm back!
Unfortunately because of the lack of wifi I haven't been able to work on the final chapter of "I'll Be Home With Frayed Feathers" at all. But that's going to change now and it will be out when it is ready, I promise. I cannot wait to finish this story for and with everyone who's shown me so much support since the start. I'll be sad that it's finished but I look forward to writing more fics when I have the time between study (I'm hoping my study - hobby balance will be better this year). I'll talk more about what's going to happen going forward in the note chapter at the end of the fic. I'll just be updating the one currently there from before the Vengeance Saga release since I don't want to delete anyone's nice comments.
So stay tuned and until then I hope you'll be satisfied with this animal form I sketched up for Hermes. It's quite rough but I was super happy with what I came up with. This idea was inspired by all the cool horse designs I've seen for Poseidon, and I thought it'd be cool to do one for Hermes. I may do some for the other Gods at some point as well.

Maybe it’s a cliche to say that ‘everything happened so fast’, but in Mikey’s defense, it was freezing and he was thinking about the hot cocoa he was going to make when he got home (with mousse, and sprinkles. Maybe the cherries April had sneakily bought him the other day), and frankly it was freezing.
The opportunity to hang out at April’s cabin with his brothers upstate had been a dream come true. Donnie kept the train carts from getting too cold regularly, but there was a power outage issue that made things draftier than even their mounds of blankets seemed to be able to drive out these days. When it had been suggested they spend a few weeks away until the grid could come back on, it sounded like a vacation.
Complete access to an open acre of land in the mountains complete with a two story log cabin home, with full wifi? And a full kitchen? Paradise. Easy trade. Every single one of them had yes and’ed that bit.
Of course, it didn’t mean they’d left the winter behind.
One second, they’d been playing ‘Free Willy-Raph’, which is to say competing over who could launch themselves high enough off a snow hill to make it fully over Raph’s head – kind of like a pole vault but with a sled and a lot more crashing limbs– and the next. Well. Mikey isn’t entirely sure what happened next.
He’d been up the slope, maybe a bit farther than his brothers had gone just to prove a point, spiced up on the barest bit of playful spite after Leo had beat him the last four times in a row, and sure he could get it this time. His brother’s and April looked like stickmen down the ways as he’d started settling down his bright orange sled.
Suddenly, a shout, or a rush of noise. He wasn’t sure what came first. A roll of white, and he was flying. Swimming, maybe. Then: darkness.
Mikey’s not sure if he blacks out for a second, or when he blinks himself awake it’s just fallen instantly silent, but it’s muffled all the way up to his eyes. Oh, he thinks distantly. There is stuff on my eyes. It’s really unfortunate that his arms are too tired to move anywhere at all near his face. He wiggles his hands anyways.
It’s cold, too— his thoughts are hard to order. It’s an all over cold like Donnie had stuffed snow down his jacket again. He hopes Raph caught him doing it this time.
“Not funny, Dee,” he mumbles, and hey. Actually, it’s hard to move his lips, too. He knows something about that— Leo had drilled it into all of their heads after he’d read through one of the big medical textbooks April ‘borrowed’ for him.
We don’t regulate temperature like people do, Leo’d said. Which means, if you lie around in the tunnels all day or take a funky trip up to skate around without a scarf. Bam, turtle pop.
Does that mean we can’t go up top at all? Mikey’d whined. It would be horrendous if they couldn’t visit April for a good few months; they had a tradition on Christmas eve of watching the absolute worst Christmas rom coms they could for the entire afternoon before her parents got home from work. They’d never gotten that cold before.
Leo’d poked Mikey and leaned forwards with a sideways smile. Nah, just gotta stay warm is all, Angie. If you feel sleepy, let me know okay?
“I think I’m sleepy,” Mikey tells Leo. Except Leo isn’t actually here, he doesn’t think. It’s cold, but it’s packed all in at him like there’s something warm under the center of it. He can’t really feel his toes, he thinks one of his boots might have fallen off. April had tried really hard to find some in his size, she’d probably be sad.
Fuck, Leo thinks. Imagines a Raph who isn’t just as mortified as he is scolding him for it, and swears again just for emphasis.
In theory, he’d known that avalanches were a thing. He’d even made a joke about it as they were driving up and noticed exactly how nestled into the mountainside April’s parents place was. He’d thought it was more for skiers, or freak accidents in ice storms, or dramatic beginnings to a meet cute made by someone who had absolutely no understanding of gravitas.
Not for little brothers. Definitely not for his.
The notice that the snow was giving way had been almost nothing— a faint drum sound maybe. He’d hesitated, for a second while goofing around with Don and gotten a handful of snow to the face as a result. Mikey trudging stubbornly up the marker that Leo’d set to try to get even more airtime, bright orange sled bobbing with him as he went.
He’d looked so tiny. For all his little brother was an absolute powerhouse of a maniac when he needed to be, sometimes it hit him funny just to remember that he was little.
Then, a cracking noise. Something rumbling— a white hill appearing behind Mikey, farther up the slope, April’s gasp of sudden realization and—
He couldn’t find Mikey.
“Maybe he followed it out,” April said, panic making her voice sound thready to Leo’s ears. “If he— in an avalanche, you’re supposed to swim with it.”
Leo shook his head. Numb down to his finger tips. “He wasn’t even looking at it.” Mikey hadn’t even seen it. His baby brother was a fluid instinctive wave of thunder in motion on his worst days, but it hit him from behind. They’d never been anywhere that had so much snow.
Donnie made a faint noise to his left, the kind of exasperated hiss that meant he was overwhelmed and shutting down. He typed even more frantically on his wrist guard.
“He’s here,” Raph said, swallowing roughly. “We just— we just have to find him. Right?”
Leo nodded back. “Maybe we should, um. If we split up, we can cover more area. Don, can you lend Raph your staff?”
It was a testament to how far deep into shut down mode his twin was that he didn’t even argue, passing it over without a word. Leo tried to center himself.
“It’s. If you poke first, gently. You can find more under the snow, so it doesn’t get more compact.” Raph’s weight would be a problem in terms of accidentally standing on Mikey, if he was under him. He tried to will his brain away from the mental image and failed. “You go left, I’ll start where we saw him and work down.”
Raph nodded, mouth set in a wobbly line. Find him Leo, he imagined Raph saying. Please.
It was a tiny one, April’d said, which was the craziest part. They’d had enough time to back up out of the way, and it hadn’t reached the house. Just a top layer shifting with the snowfall from last week, probably. Just bad timing.
There could be another one, if they weren’t careful. Leo was the fastest, he could portal himself down the mountain if he triggered anything, but it would mean Mike potentially buried under another layer. Shit. And it was cold. He’d almost told Mikey to come back down at first, because he was the most susceptible as the smallest to bone chill and they’d been out for a good hour already, but Mike had looked so determined—
He set out up the mountain.
“Mike? Angelo?” He called, gingerly plodding through the snow, one careful foot at a time. “Buddy, you’re scaring us a little here. Can you make a noise? Reach a hand up? Come on, I’ll even let you tell everyone you won the jump if you want. Once in a lifetime offer!”
The wind whistled emptily back at him. He shivered. The chill was already starting to bite further through his layers, or maybe it was the shock of seeing his baby brother’s orange hat swallowed up like it was being erased in front of him. This was supposed to be fun, was the thing. A big relaxation party time after barely surviving the end of the world, again.
Dad had stayed home to keep the lights on, and April was off school for winter break, and it was supposed to be the best time ever so that dad didn’t get a heart attack and ground them all from ever doing anything until they were forty. Fuck, he thought again, which really put a finer point on things.
What if Mike was hurt? What if he’d hit his head, or crashed into a tree– what if he couldn’t breathe, and Leo was walking around slowly above him all the while, oblivious. What if this nice holiday trip was the last time he ever saw his baby brother, and the last thing he’d ever said was a teasing insult about being last.
“Mikey!” He called out more urgently. It echoed back, just on the side of too loud, and he froze. Waited. One one thousand, two one thousand.
No drum sound, no cracking. Just the potential of his brother suffocating three feet to his left.
Dad was going to lose it.
He scanned around, white snow and wind blurring at his vision in every direction. Panic had already settled its grip in his chest so hard it hurt, his hands thrumming with adrenaline. It seemed all dead here, frozen still life portraits of something lost years ago. Grey and white and— there!
A peek of bright orange, barely poking out of the snow. His sled.
Leo collapsed beside it, digging immediately, heart in his throat. “Mike! Mikey, can you hear me, buddy? Are you— can you say something?”
He wiggled the sled free after a long frantic moment, using it like a shovel. What if Mikey wasn’t even under it, what if the sled had flung itself the opposite direction, and Leo was wasting time—
A gloved hand reached up through the layer of snow, weakly. “Oh thank fuck,” Leo breathed, and dropped the sled to grab at it with both hands. “You okay? Can you— is anything broken?”
Mikey’s face appeared, paler than usual. Bunches of snow tucked against his eyelids. The most wonderful sight he’d ever seen.
“C’n get it off,” he said, barely a mumble. Leo leaned in.
“What was that, sweetheart?”
Mikey’s face scrunched, a barely there motion but something that shot right through Leo’s heart with every big brother instinct he owned. “Snow. M’ eyes.”
“Oh,” Leo chucked, nervous and rabbit quick with fear. “I got you, shush. Hold on, Sunshine.” He pulled his glove off with a thumb, wiping at Mikey’s eyes as careful as anything. His hands shook violently.
Mikey cautiously blinked up at him, eyes dazed. “Leo, I’m sleepy.”
Leo shoved his glove back on, pushed the remainder of the snow off Mikey’s legs. Unburying him as much as he could. “I bet, big day for you, huh? How’s about we get you down the hill–”
“No,” Mikey’s voice got a little clearer. “I’m. You said to say. If we’re cold and sleepy. I remembered.”
Oh. Oh, shit. Leo made himself smile. “That’s right, I did say that. Great job for telling me. We’ll get you warmed up right away, okay? But I— I need you to stay awake before that, okay? Can you do that?”
Mikey’s eyes fluttered. “Try.”
The whiplash of fear and relief was making Leo dizzy. He nodded frantically, made himself stop. Mikey’d landed the right way up under the snow, had almost certainly hit his head from how his pupils looked, but he didn’t know if anything was broken. He shouldn’t move Mikey until he was sure, but— there was blue, just there ever so slightly. The edges of Mikey’s lips. Shit. Shit.
“I’m going to lift you up, okay? Tell me if it hurts.”
“‘Mm.” Mikey’s head flopped back into the snow. His hat was missing, Leo realized. He didn’t know where Mikey’s hat went.
“Okay, that’s– that’s good. Hey, you were saying something about hot chocolate earlier. Can you remind me? You always make it the best.” He slid his arms under Mikey’s shell, one under his legs. Mikey rolled his head towards him as he pulled him towards himself like a limp doll– Leo made himself stop noticing.
“Mousse,” Mikey said, simply. “And sprinkles.” He added, more crossly.
Leo chuckled, then grimaced as he carefully moved to stand. “Yum, that sounds great. Hey, nothing hurts, right? You’re not being brave on me, are you?”
Mikey let out a vague mumble, then frowned. “Raph was. He was gunna eat all my cherries, for the hot chocolate.”
Fifteen years of growing up with Michelangelo was the only thing that prevented Leo from freezing in sheer confusion. The best way through was with him. “Oh? I’ll tell him not to.”
“Good,” Mikey said, with a tiny head not he seemed to regret. “You can have one, though.”
The trek back down was going to be slow, Leo thought. He smiled vaguely at Mike, listening carefully for any angry mountain noises around them. April and Donnie seemed to have noticed him already, at least. April was sprinting back to the house.
“I’m special? Didn’t know you liked me carrying you so much.”
Mikey huffed, sounding more like a sniff. “Didn’t put snow d’wn my. Down my jacket.”
“Hm. Think that might have been the mountain, Miguelito. Are you feeling sleepy still?”
“Head hurts,” Mikey said after a moment. “Oh. We were sledding.”
Okay, good. Leo breathed out. “Yep. You got surprise attacked a little bit there, so we’re done for the day I think.”
“Aw,” Mikey whined. Looked up at Leo with big eyes. “I lost my boot.”
His little brother, Leo thought with a wave of fondness so loud it felt like a heart attack. He nodded seriously. “April will forgive you.”
He hefted Mikey up higher, making sure his arms are tucked in and his face pressed to the warmest parts of Leo's jacket. Hot baths and big blankets aside, he was going to make Mikey the biggest, sweetest hot chocolate the world had ever seen.
"Big shitty rom-com marathon in your future, Angie."
Mike sighs, just there against his pocket, looking smaller than anything without his mask. "Can we play the mustache game?"
He'll tape as many fake mustaches all over the screen as the kid wants, he thinks. "Mhmm. I won't even cheat."
"Yay," Mikey said tiredly. "Thanks f'r not letting me be a turtle pop."
"You got it, sunshine." His heart right between his hands. "Anytime."

Here’s an itemised list of everything I went through to watch the 2025 Tonys (especially the HamilTEN performance) as an Australian teenager:
1. Due to time zones, the Tonys began at 10:00am Monday my time. I had to go to school.
2. I had a plan though. Since I’m a good student, nobody would suspect if I was sitting quietly with headphones in, so I was like “ok I’ll watch it during class and catch up on the work later”
3. MY SCHOOL BANNED PARAMOUNT+ (the site where you could watch the Tonys in Australia) ON OUR COMPUTERS
4. I thought it was just the school wifi it was banned on, so I pulled out my phone and turned on my hotspot but NOPE IT WAS THE WHOLE GODDAM LAPTOP. I tried incognito mode and everything
5. I looked on YouTube where there was NOTHING
6. I downloaded the paramount+ app onto my phone only to remember it’s my brother’s acc and idk what the password is
7. I got home and tried accessing paramount on my Xbox thinking I was already logged in but NO OF COURSE I WASNT
8. I had to text my brother and admit defeat
9. Because my paramount profile is set to kids (even though I’m SEVENTEEN) I had to type in the parental lock code. My brother had no idea what it was so I had to GUESS. (By this point the Tonys had started 6 HOURS AGO and I’d well and truly missed the whole thing)
10. After some guessing, I actually got the code right (and immediately wrote it down because why tf do I need a parental lock 😭)
11. THERE ARE ONLY THE HIGHLIGHTS FOR SOME REASON
But at least the HamilTEN performance was included ig 😭

if I might beg your indulgence on a niche rant for a moment, I think it is extremely fucked up that tech companies are still designing and releasing new products that aren't compatible with WPA3, a wifi security spec that was introduced in 20-fucking-18, and that as more and more households have huge numbers of devices for streaming services, gaming, smart home stuff, etc etc, basically anyone who isn't a big nerd like me is going to be actively prevented from adopting an actual modern security standard for years, and it's probably just never going to be become the out-of-the-box default on routers and wifi access points because D-Link or Huawei or whoever will obviously never flip a switch that improves security for end users if it comes at the cost of 75% of people returning their purchases instantly because their fucking Poobstick 8K Pro Plus Max stopped working and they can't be arsed to figure out why.

Okay, everyone's had a few days to be sad. But the world didn't end, so there is stuff to be done. Mid terms are in 2 years.
This post isn't going to tell you anything other people haven't done better or in more detail, and I'm not even American, so what the fuck are you listening to me for, but I think it might be useful to somebody as a place to start, and I think it's useful to keep in mind that none of us are helpless - no matter how much it might benefit somebody else to let you think so.
I'll add to it as and when I can.
NOW
Check your ballot. Tell everyone you know to check on their ballots. Spread the word to everyone you can possibly tell to check their ballots. The Presidential election is absolutely not going to be reversed, but local races and initiatives can be decided by twenty, a dozen, two votes. The window's closing on this by now, so check into this immediately if you haven't already. And if there is any possibility for a recount where it might achieve something, make noise for one.
You would be absolutely amazed how much harm can be spared and how much good can be done at the Parks & Rec level, no matter what's happening up top. Do not waste the chance to make friction for bad guys later on, or lay down some tools for the good guys in advance.
Then, if you have a Dem Senator, call their office and urge them to confirm all Biden's judicial nominees now, right now, ASAP. Here's a rough call script.
Btw mid terms are in two years.

Spend the next two months -
Buying a little extra boring ass shelf stable food and water on your grocery runs, and build up as much food security as you can. You're probably not gonna need it, but it's good to have, even only as a hedge against inflation or unreliable weather/disaster relief responses.
Stock up on medication you might need if you can. Organize whatever procedures you might need done if you can, including contraceptive measures. And find a reason to need a Morning After Pill or two in the next few weeks, somebody you care about might be real glad you did.
Consider making any big ticket purchases that will be affected by proposed tariffs (electronics etc), or any... slightly less conventional things you want to buy, now - but otherwise it would be a good time to lay some money aside if you can.
Get in the habit of paying for things in cash, and limiting how much information on your habits are out there. Stash a little cash somewhere, for if you want to buy something less visibly in future, too.
Do your homework about your digital footprint. Accounts, posts, doxxable clues, data, behavioral info, browsers, wifi links, cookies, consumer history, always-on "Smart" speakers and devices, think about all of it. Your phone is telling everyone where you are at all times whether the Location stuff is on or not - get in the habit of leaving it at home, so that suddenly not having it is not, in itself, a sign of anything. Your fitness wearables are mapping your entire lifestyle - it is effectively recording where you work, what time you finish, what routes you take, what stores you go to, where your friends live, where you go for recreation, where your family lives and what your relationship is like with them (where's your fitbit at Thanksgiving, Christmas etc?). Don't use fingerprint or facial recognition for anything, ever, if you can help it - apart from cataloguing your biometrics, it is much easier for a third party, police included, to use these to access your stuff than a password. It probably goes without saying, do not digitally document your menstrual cycle in any way.
Figure out what channels you can use in future to retain access to as much as possible if someone decides you shouldn't have it, or wants to know if you look for it. VPNs are a starting point, but not the end point. Do your homework on this now, before you need to know it.
Look into securing documentation that might be of use in future, this includes property, legal stuff like Power of Attorney, passports etc. (Though that doesn't necessarily mean carrying it at all times to everything, just sayin'.)
What's your ACA status? Are you currently availing of absolutely everything you're currently entitled to? If not, work on it. Government resources are always harder to take away from you once you're getting them than to deny you outright.
If there's any gay shit you like or want preserved, it would be a good time to buy/download/back it up. This includes movies, fics, books. It would also be a good time to seek out and subscribe to independent and non-digital gay media, zines, etc, and get to know your in-person scenes. You might be surprised how much stuff still exists and happens in ways that are invisible to the internet, gay and otherwise.
Don't forget that mid terms are in 2 years.

Mid terms are 2 years away. Which means the campaigns for them start in a year, which means the work for them starts now.
All else aside, Democrat flips elsewhere in the government structure at that point would make it way, way harder for them to keep smashing everything, and there is work that you can do towards making that happen. For better and sometimes worse, the American political system is a very big and very awkward machine, and King Dipshit and his cronies cannot wave a magic wand to get their way everywhere all the time as a result. Look into your immediate local political scene, and figure out what you can do for it.
You might be getting sick of everyone talking about "building community". What this usually means in practice is firstly, seeking out local or neighboring orgs and groups that are doing what you want done, and joining them; or else, starting them yourself.
That might sound daunting, but it's not hard to start an interest group, just very annoying early on. You'll have to do a lot more printing than you might expect. You're going to have to deal with some deeply irritating people who are, nonetheless, very good at getting good shit done, and you're going to have to learn that's a You problem to deal with.
I'm involved in a couple of local groups in my country and it is WILD how much even one person can get done purely because nobody else gives enough of a shit about boring small potatoes stuff to notice or oppose it. That can be a blessing and a curse, so make it the first one.
Apart from this stuff being generally good, it will stop you losing your fucking mind. No, you're not going to community garden your way out of this one, sure, but that community garden might stop you letting the bullshit beat you into the ground before you can do something more important down the line. And it might introduce you to the girl who knows somebody with the thing that can do the shit you need around then too; it might teach you a lot of practical and psychological stuff you'll be glad of sometime.
It might even teach you how to get much more important things done in your local political infrastructure, who is on your side, who isn't, how to get the best from either - some of the most valuable shit I've learned about my little universe was picked up in the course of volunteering for a haunted house.
I am as guilty as everyone else as looking at the outlook and saying fuck it, bad guys won, but that is legitimately irrational no matter where you live. They never win, not outside of stories, because real life doesn't end like a story does. There is stuff to be done to make life more bearable than it would be otherwise, more bearable until it's possible to make it even better. There is so much stuff to get doing, instead of just feeling bad.

You realise a little too late that you have no idea if you should do more than pour the brew into a mug. You recall Frigga mentioned Mr. Laufeyson took his tea black but was it the same for coffee? You never drink it so you wouldn't know better. You hate to presume.
So you find a small tray, setting the mug on it with the dish of sugar and a little porcelain milk urn. You balance is all and climb the staircase tremulously, the task made heavier by the dread nipping at your ears.
You come down the hall and stop before the study door. Your hands are occupied so you gentle tap with your toe. Without an answer, you try again. Still, you're met with only silence.
"Mr. Laufeyson?" You call through, "I have your coffee--"
The door a few feet down opens instead and you turn to face the dour occupant. Mr. Laufeyson beckons you wordlessly with a curt gesture before he disappears behind the door frame. You follow as you let a breath slowly out your nose. Inside, he sits at the writing desk, the laptop open as he tilts his head at it. He has your notes open, shamelessly perusing your reminders.
"Here you are, Mr. Laufeyson," you put the tray on the desk.
"There we are," he accepts tersely and sits back, swiping up the paper from atop the gold and white folder. He eyes the estimate left by the carpenter with your signature at the bottom. "So, what are we to do about that infernal thing?"
You fold your hands and wait for his answer. You realise he does not want one from you. He sniffs and slips the paper over the keyboard, letting it drift slightly over the edge. He sits back and look at you.
"It is the last of your worries, surely," he says flippantly, "firstly, this..." he taps the laptop, "you leave it here. As if you do not care."
You purse your lips. You won't argue. If he wants you to take it home, certainly you can, but you don't have wifi or a need for it beyond these walls.
"What if something should happen? You would want to have access to all your..." he eyes the screen, "clutter."
"Yes, Mr. Laufeyson. Noted."
"Noted?" He scoffs and unfolds his arms, "right."
He moves the paper back to the folder and types swiftly, much quicker than your chicken pecking. He sits back proudly and once more sets his sights on you. You clutch your hands tighter and await further remonstrance. This is his vengeance. You can't help but feel you deserve it.
He reaches for the mug, disregarding the milk and sugar, and blows over it. He watches you as he sips.
"Mm," he considers the double-walled cup, "bit strong..."
"Mr. Laufeyson, I could try again--"
"It'll do," he dismisses, "as I said, other concerns. And as I also said, several times, and how you know I do hate to repeat myself, this..." he points at you, flicking his finger up and down, "attire."
You look down at yourself and shrug. The clothes aren't that bad, only plain. Maybe not to his standard but you don't see how they're so wrong.
"Mr. Laufeyson, I don't know--"
"You don't know much, do you?" He challenges, "well, you better catch up."
He pauses to take another sip, cheeks straining as his throat tightens. He can barely choke down the coffee, making you feel even worse. Is it that bad?
"Are you not curious why I've returned early?" He sets the mug down as he leans forward.
You're quiet. It's not that you don't care, you just wouldn't dare ask. Not after last night, you wouldn't want to bring up bad feelings.
"I see you had my return marked in your calendar," he continues, "I suppose I spoiled your plans, hm?"
"No, Mr. Laufeyson," you assure him.
"So you are happy for my return?"
Your cheek twitches. It's an odd question. One that has no right answer. A trick.
"If you're happy, Mr. Laufeyson, then I am too."
He seems surprised by your answer as his brows arch and his lips part slightly. He closes his mouth and narrows his eyes as he watches you. He chortles and stands.
"How..." he struggles to find a word, "foolish."
You're struck equally by his response. The threat that underlines it and the rebuke in his tone. You dip your head down.
"Call the carpenter," he orders as he retrieves the bill, "I'll sign off on the repairs."
He struts by you as you stare at the tray and his unfinished coffee. Another to-do: you'll have to figure out that machine.

It isn't until you sit down to work that you realise the door is still open. The one adjoining the library to Mr. Laufeyson's study. You can hear the subtle tap of keys as he sets to work. You hunker down to do the same, overly mindful of each little noise.
You'll make your call to Ronan elsewhere so you don't disturb the silence. You go through your list, marking down what can be done today in your phone. You get up and slowly move towards the door.
"Sneaking off? You are so good at creeping around? Like a little cat," Laufeyson intones before you can let yourself out. You look back as he stands in the other doorway, "I have an appointment shortly. You will let them in when they ring and show them up."
"Yes, Mr. Laufeyson," you agree.
"So you won't stray far."
"I won't."
He waves you off lightly and disappears into the study once more. You turn and quietly shuffle into the hallway. You go downstairs and pace as you dial the phone. Your nerves are a swirl. Mr. Laufeyson is suffocatingly observant.
"Ronan Carpentry," the voice comes from the speaker.
"Oh, ach, hi," you nearly choke on your tongue, "hi, um, I'm just following up on an estimate."
He asks for your name, you give your own but add Mr. Laufeyson's as he would be the leaseholder. The air is static as the man is silent on the other end. He hums and finally speaks again.
"So you would like to go forward with the work?" He prompts.
"Yes, sir."
"When would be best to begin?" He's straight to business. You can appreciate that.
"Hmm, well, I could do most days except Wednesday but the owner would be here."
"Would he be handling this or would you?"
You trace a fingernail with your thumb, "me, I guess."
"Thursday works for me," he confirms, "if it suits you, miss."
"Great," you sigh, "yeah, Thursday works."
"Nine good?" His deep voice is smooth like syrup as it drips through the phone.
"Nine," you confirm with a squeak, "thank you, sir."
"Of course. Have a good one."
You eke out a 'you, too' and hang up. You exhale out your nerves. You're even more jittery and you don't know why. Usually getting phone calls out of the way is a relief.
You do your best to focus, working down the list until the doorbell buzzes. You jump, taking a moment to recall the expected visitor. You rush out the front door and down the steps. You come up to the gate but find a car waiting by the bigger door. You hit the button so it rolls open and lets the brown vehicle through.
The man that gets out has gray hair and pale blue eyes. He looks around curiously as you cross the lot back to the house. He gives you a friendly smile as you approach and offers his hand, "Loki hanging around here?"
You daintily shake his hand, a gesture you're unused to. His grip is firm but not harsh.
"Mr. Laufeyson is upstairs in his study, I can show you in--"
"Mr. Laufeyson?" He repeats, amused, "in his study? I can find my way," he lets you go, "he didn't tell me he had a lady friend."
Your mouth forms a surprised squiggle, "I'm the house manager."
"Ah, house manager," he clucks, "interesting. Well, can't keep him waiting, I'm already late."
He shoots you with a finger gun and rushes past you. You frown as you turn to watch him. He's not what you expected. You don't see Laufeyson as tolerating someone like that, not that he puts up with much.
As you enter the house, you hear the man's voice upstairs. You're not used to signs of life. His gregarious greeting is soon smothered behind a door. You carry on.
At one, you take a short break in the garden to have your peanut butter sandwich. You thought of eating at the counter as you usually do but being inside is starting to feel oppressive. You chew the dry bread and thick spread, staring at the foliage without seeing.
Your eyes are drawn up as you sense movement and you find curtains being drawn back on the second floor. A figure lingers behind the pane before backing away. You're certain it's Mr. Laufeyson. You hope he's not bothered by you being out in the garden.
You finish the crust last, your stomach mulching up the food violently, and you dust off your fingers. You take out your phone and check the list. No time to waste. You had your ten minutes. You can get through a few more hours.

Tuesday comes and goes in a similar slog. Your hours are whittled away as you find yourself under the omniscient eye of Mr. Laufeyson. Each time you think you're alone, he appears. He looms but doesn't speak, lurking and waiting, for what, you don't know. At the end of the day, you still don't know. You go home, just as you do every night, without a farewell.
Home sees you just the same. Leslie's finishing up as your father sits over a new puzzle. It's been ages since you've seen him so consumed by anything besides his cigarettes. You sit and have dinner at the nurse's insistence and bid her off.
Your father stays up as you go up to shower and settle into bed. The last six days hang off your shoulders like sandbags and needle in the muscles between your shoulder blades. You lay down and fall asleep almost as soon as your head meets the pillow. You've never been so exhausted in your life.
You wake up, less refreshed than groggy. You make yourself get out of bed, wanting to get stuff done on your singular day off. After you have your tea and get your dad his coffee, you get to the chores that you couldn't do throughout the week. Mopping and vacuuming, then laundry.
As you work on the second floor, your father sits with his puzzle. He's fidgety as he hunches over the table. You watch him as you sweep the floor around the couch. He catches you as he glances up. He scowls and shakes his head.
You gather the dust and dirt into the pan and dump it out. You check the time. It's nearly lunchtime. You wash your hands and check the cupboard. There's a can of tuna leftover from your last grocery trip. You'll try to do another on your way home from work tomorrow. You take out your phone and add it to your reminders.
You go back to the living room as your dad holds a handful of pieces and tosses them one at a time onto the wood as he searches for a particular shape.
"Are you hungry at all?" You ask.
"I want a fucking smoke," he growls.
"Well, I'm sorry, I don't have any," you tuck the phone in your pocket and push your hands behind you, clasping them tightly. The weight of it presses against your thigh.
"Don't be a fucking smartass," he throws the pieces left in his hand at you and they scatter on the floor. "Maybe if you got off that phone , eh?"
You kneel down to gather up the pieces. He snarls and hits the table. You pluck up the last few and set them on wood as you stand.
"Where'd you get a phone like that, huh? Expensive? You been buying yourself all this nice shit and I'm sitting here on a stinky fucking couch rotting away," he accuses.
"It's for work," you say, "I'm gonna make tuna sandwiches."
He sits back and huffs, swiping up the remote and jabbing it through the air towards the television. He sets the volume on blast so your eardrums pulse. You step back as he jams his thumb into the buttons.
“Makes me wonder what kinda job affords you a fancy phone like that?”
“Huh?” You grimace.
“Well, you got no schooling, got no skills,” he sniffs, “only got one thing of use.”
He can't mean… that. You're his daughter. Your eyes sear and gleam as you shake your head.
“I… I'm a house manager,” you croak, “dad–”
“Sure,” he guffaws, “what kinda idiot would want you managing their house? They probably haven't seen this dump.”
“Please, I'm trying–”
“You always gotta fucking yammer!” He barks and a hot pain bounces off your arm.
You grunt and look down as the remote hits the floor. You rub the tender spot as you let out a shocked ‘ow.’
“Go fucking cry about it. I can't hear the TV over your whining.”
You hold back the wall of tears and pick up the remote. You set it by his puzzle and back up. Yo wiggle your nose as you sidle out of the room. hiding your face.
You move tentatively like prey avoiding the vicious eyes of a hunter. Your arm throbs as you feel a welt forming. It's better to hide before you get more.
You forget about the tuna as your hunger evaporates. You can only think of the pain that goes much deeper than flesh. That rent in your heart that can barely contain your despair. It splits wider as the stress of the week threatens to overflow.
You retreat to your room as the salty tears begin to stream, catching along your nose and dripping off your chin. You close the door and hurtle yourself towards the bed to bury your face in the pillow. A hard shape presses into your leg, a corner stabbing you bluntly.
You lift your hip and fish around in your pocket to free your phone, tearing your pocket inside out. As you go to put it on the nightstand, you notice the timer in the corner. Didn't you lock it before you shoved it away?
You sit up and gulp back sobs, shaking as you stare at the ongoing call. Mr. Laufeyson's name is blazed across the screen. You put it to your ear and whisper, “hello?” You swallow and make yourself speak louder, “hello?”
The line clicks and you pull the screen back. The call's ended as the option to return the call pops up. You blacken the screen and turn the phoje face down, dropping it onto the night table.

Zorana's Guide To The Poke Classic Network!
Do you want to connect your DS Pokemon games to the internet long after Nintendo shut down their servers? Do you wish to trade and battle with your internet friends who play the gen 4 and 5 Pokemon games? Do you have a desire to watch and upload battle videos like you used to years ago?
If you said yes to any of these questions then I have the thing for you!
The Poke Classic Network!
This is a fan server for Pokemon DPPT, HGSS, BW, and BW2 that's running with the help of the Kaeru WFC! Not only does it let you connect your games to the internet again, the site will let you see what Pokemon are up on the GTS for both the gen 4 and gen 5 servers!
Below is my guide on how to get this working for you so you can bring a new life to these wonderful Pokemon games. Also I thought this would be shorter but it's rather long, so under the cut it goes! Please let me know if I missed anything in here! I'll try my best to fix it if I can.
Getting Started:
Before you get connected, make sure you are using the device you plan on doing all of your online connections with! For some reason you are locked to one device for this stuff and using another one will wipe your PalPad, and assign you a new friend code. Since what's available in the GTS search function is based on SEEN Pokemon the most reliable way to get particular pokemon (without marking everything as seen via cheating) would be trading them from people you've registered in the PalPad.
If you only plan on using the GTS then you don't need to worry as much about this.
The Poke Classic Network works on ALL DS/3Ds systems!
I will note that the Gen 5 games are easier to set up if you're using a 3Ds since they can see and read the Wifi settings of the 3Ds and can just have the DNS swapped without additional set up.
Connecting DPPT/HGSS on all systems and BW/BW2 on the DS/DSi:
I will go over connecting via Emulator in another section, this section and the next one is for if you're PHYSICAL HARDWARE.
What you'll need:
The console of choice
The game of choice, preferably played to the point where you can access the GTS for testing purposes. --- In DPPT you can find the GTS building in Jubilife City. --- In HGSS you can find the WFC building in Goldenrod City. --- In BW/BW2 you can access the GTS in the top part of every Pokecenter. --- I don't remember when exactly the GTS is unlocked for the games unfortunately.
Some way to create a Wifi network point with a compatible WEP (password type) or just no password. --- The easiest way I've found is just using a hotspot without a password. --- I know some modern routers will let you create an extra network like this if you know how. I do not and it'd likely be different for each router anyways. --- There are also some programs that can make one using your computer. I've used one for a bit before it locked what I needed behind a paywall.
What to do:
The first step is setting up the connection!
Start up the Wifi network point so it'll show up on your system.
I recommend using a hotspot that doesn't have a password on it. Make sure you change the bandwidth to 2.4 GHz, since 5 5 GHz doesn't seem to work. DO NOT PUBLICLY OPEN YOUR HOTSPOT IN A PUBLIC PLACE! You do not want someone deciding to eat up your data while you're trading pokemon, so only do this in a place you know is safe to do so, like at home or at a friend's place.
Once you've done that you'll want to open your game and go to the Nintendo WFC Settings. The button will look like one of these depending on the game you're playing:
This will take you to the DS wifi settings that are saved to the cart!
Next you'll want to tap on the big blue button which will take you to this screen.
You may or may not have connections here already if you've played before Nintendo's servers shut down. Erase them now if you do as they will no longer work. Then you'll want to tap the None button for Connection 1.
I'll be demonstrating using Connection 2 myself, but stick to the first connection.
Tap on the Search for access point button. This will bring up a list of nearby connections that your system can see. You'll want to tap on the one you started earlier. It will test the connection and the boot you back to the screen with the big blue button. Tap the big blue button and then the Ready button that's now showing up for the first connection.
Now scroll down to the very bottom and turn off Auto-obtain DNS and change the primary DNS to 178.62.43.212. You can also change the secondary DNS to the same one as well or keep it all 0s.
Once you're done it should look something like this:
Save the settings, close out of the Wifi connections menu, start your save, and try connecting to the GTS!
If you connect to the GTS then congrats, you are now able to use the Poke Classic Network! If it doesn't work the first try don't worry and try again. You can also swap the secondary DNS to the other one you weren't using and try again that way.
Connecting BW/BW2 on the 3Ds/2Ds:
This one is super simple and doesn't require any additional set up! Sorry I don't have any pictures for this one atm. I may edit this to add a couple later.
What you'll need:
Game of choice
Console of choice
What to do:
Open the internet settings on your 3Ds and tap on Connection settings.
Tap on a connection you know is working, tap Change Settings, then go to the next page.
Tap on DNS and tap No, then tap Detailed Setup. Change the primary DNS to 178.62.43.212 and either keep the secondary one as all 0s or use the same DNS address you put in the primary DNS slot.
Save your settings and go start your game, then try connecting to the GTS.
If you connect to the GTS then congrats, you are now able to use the Poke Classic Network! If it doesn't work the first try don't worry and try again. You can also swap the secondary DNS to the other one you weren't using and try again that way.
Connecting any DS Pokemon game using MelonDS (emulator):
This method will let you connect to the Poke Classic Network if you don't have the physical hardware or can't connect your system to the internet for any reason and know how to back up your save to your computer.
What you'll need:
The MelonDS emulator [Link] --- Desume doesn't have Wifi functionality so you'll need to move your saves over if that is your primary DS emulator. --- If the latest version doesn't work for some reason try again with the second newest one.
Game of choice
What to do:
The steps are nearly identical to the first section once you have the emulator running! Instead of using your own connection though you'll be using the one MelonDS makes for you, so there's no need to worry about finding a way to make one yourself.

McMurdo Internet
Internet service is supplied to Antarctica via a geostationary satellite. This far south, the satellite is only a few degrees above the horizon, and unfortunately for McMurdo, it's behind Mt Erebus. So the signal is beamed to a receiver on Black Island, about 20 miles away to the southwest, and bounced over to the sheltered alcove at the end of the Hut Point Peninsula where McMurdo sits.

The Black Island telecommunications infrastructure was installed in the 1980s, long before the internet we know and love today. It was upgraded in 2010 to allow more data transfer, mainly realtime weather data to feed into global forecast models. For this reason, it's probably the only place I've ever been where upload speed is remarkably faster than download speed – 60Mbps for outbound traffic, but only 20Mbps for inbound. Most regular internet use is receiving, not sending, so that's an entire base running on a connection that's only marginally faster than the average American smartphone. As you can imagine, this is somewhat limiting.
The limits to one's internet access actually begin before one even reaches the Ice. At the orientation in Christchurch, one is directed to a URL from which one must download and install a security programme from the U.S. government. It may feel like a hippie commune full of nerds, but McMurdo is an installation of the American state, and as such its computer network is a target of whatever disgruntled conspiracy theorist decides to hack The Man on any given day. Computers that are allowed onto this network (such as the one on which I am typing right now) have to have an approved firewall and antivirus service installed, then this extra programme on top of them. I am not sure what it does. For all I know the CIA is spying on me even now. (Hi, guys!) But you need to install it to get on the McMurdo Internet, such as it is, so I did.
To be honest, I was rather looking forward to a month cut off entirely from the hyperconnected world, so I was a tiny bit disappointed that quite a lot of day-to-day communication is done by email, and I would need to be on my computer a fair bit to get it. Had I known just how important email would be, I'd have installed an email client that actually downloads one's messages instead of just fetching them; as it was, the cycle of loading an email and sending the reply, even in Gmail's "HTML for slow connections" mode, took about five minutes, not counting the time it took to write. Tending one's email was a serious time commitment; sometimes I felt like I was spending more time on the computer in Antarctica than I did at home.

Crary scientists waiting, and waiting, and waiting
In a way, though, I was lucky, because I was technically a scientist and therefore had access to the one building on base with WiFi, the Crary Lab. And don't think you can just waltz into Crary with your laptop and poach the WiFi – in order to access it at all, you have to get set up by Crary IT with your own personal WiFi login. If you do not have Crary access, your portal to the Internet is one of a handful of ethernet cables in each of the dorm common rooms, or some public terminals in the main building. You can hop on, download your emails, maybe check the news or Google something you needed to look up, and then leave it for someone else. When most online time sinks are either blocked or too heavy to load, it’s amazing how little internet time you actually turn out to need.
Things that we have come to take for granted in The World are not a part of McMurdo life. Social media is pretty much out – the main platforms are bandwidth hogs even before you try to load a video or an animated GIF. There is no sharing of YouTube links, and no Netflix and chill. Someone was once sent home mid-season for trying to download a movie. Video calls with family and friends? Forget it. People do occasionally do video calls from Antarctica, often to media outlets or schools, but these have to be booked in advance so as to have the requisite bandwidth reserved. Jumping on FaceTime does not happen – not least because handheld devices have to be in airplane mode at all times for security reasons. Your phone might be secure enough for your internet banking, but not for US government internet!
It is, unavoidably, still a digital environment, it just gets by largely without internet access. Nearly everyone has an external hard drive, mostly for media that they've brought down to fill their off hours. If you want to share files you just swap hard drives, or hand over a memory stick. When the Antarctic Heritage Trust wanted some book material from me, I dropped it onto an SD card and ran it over to Scott Base on foot – a droll juxtaposition of high- and low-tech, not to mention a good excuse for a hike over The Gap on a beautiful day. It took half an hour, but was still faster than emailing it.
There is also a McMurdo Intranet, which includes a server for file sharing. Emailing someone your photos will take ages, but popping them into a folder on the I: drive and sending them a note to say you've done so (or, better yet, phoning them, or poking your head into their office) is much more efficient. To conserve space, this informal server partition is wiped every week, so you have to be quick about it, but it's an effective workaround, and also a good way to get relatively heavy resources to a large number of people in one go.
The telecommunications centre on Black Island is mostly automated, but like anything – perhaps more than some things, given the conditions – it needs to be maintained. There is a small hut out there for an equally small team of electricians and IT engineers; Black Island duty attracts the sort of person who might have been a lighthouse keeper back in the day.
Towards the end of my time on the Ice there was a spell where they needed to shut off the connection overnight, to do some necessary work. Given that most people's workdays extended at least to the shutoff time at 5:30 p.m., this meant essentially no internet for a large portion of the population, and some amusing flyers were posted up to notify everyone of the impending hardship.


Someday, faster, more accessible internet will come to Antarctica. It's more or less unavoidable, as communications technology improves, and everyone's work – especially the scientists' – depends more and more on having a broadband connection at all times. It will make a lot of things more convenient, and will make the long separation from friends and family much easier. But I'm pretty sure that many more people will mourn the upgrade than celebrate it. One can, theoretically, curtail one's internet use whenever one likes, but even before the pandemic it was almost impossible to live this way with the demands of modern life: I know from personal experience that opting out of Facebook alone can have a real detrimental effect on relationships, even with people one sees in the flesh fairly regularly, simply because everyone assumes that is how everyone else communicates. Being in a community where no one has access to assumed channels, and is more or less cut off from the rest of the world in a pocket universe of its own, levels the playing field and brings a certain unity. The planned (and, unarguably, necessary) updating of the physical infrastructure of McMurdo will wipe out a lot of the improvised, make-do-and-mend character of the place; how much would free and easy access to the online world change it in a less tangible way?
I'm sure the genuine Antarctic old-timers would shake their heads at the phone and email connections we have now, and say that no, this has already ruined Antarctica. It's not Antarctica unless your only link to the outside world is a dodgy radio. It's not Antarctica unless you only get mail once a year when the relief ship arrives. Doubtless the shiny new McMurdo will be seen as 'the good old days' by someone, someday, too. Change may happen slower there than elsewhere, but just like the rust on the tins at Cape Evans, it comes eventually, regardless.
For my own part, I'm glad I got to see 'old' McMurdo, such as it was, all plywood and cheap '90s prefab. The update will be much more efficient, and tidy, but yet another generation removed from the raw experience of the old explorers. My generation is probably the last to remember clearly what life was like before ubiquitous broadband; to some extent, Antarctica is a sort of time capsule of that world, just as the huts are a time capsule of Edwardian frontier life. I hope they'll find a way to hang on to the positive aspects of that.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm off to waste an hour mindlessly refreshing Twitter ...

Yandere Schlatt fic is pending bc I feel like I can’t write him right, anyways here are some hcs (with help from @peepsterzs my beloved)
You’ve known him for a while, either since highschool or lunch club
You were the only one that’s always treated him the same, not caring to put him on a pedestal or anything
You also weren’t special in any way, minding your business and aloof from everyone else
It’s what infatuated him, you barely talked talked to anyone and liked to stay in your bubble
He starts separating you from your friends with threats, often pulling out one of his guns to point them at their heads when you’re not there
Leaving you little gifts ranging from fancy cheeses to expensive jewelry and signed from your secret admirer
It always makes you smile and you tell him almost immediately about the newest gift you got
When you’re not home he’ll sneak in and steal your underwear, hair ties and little trinkets you wouldn’t notice go missing
he definitely doesn’t have a shrine
He kidnaps you first in Austin, most of your friends thinking you ran away because your fame was overbearing or thinking you went awol
He made a few mistakes at the beginning, accidentally letting you have WiFi, trying to access the internet through the tv
And not getting enough security to let you slip when he was sleeping on the sofa, the alarm woke him up to the door wide open as you started to run
Course you didn’t get far enough from him
he had to tell his neighbors that you refused to take your medication and it made you act out
When he takes you to New York he gets an apartment for the both of you, separate from his office so you can’t access the internet or anything
You’re only allowed to use the tv sometimes, he makes sure it doesn’t have YouTube or anything you can use to reach out to the real word
He feels guilty because he can’t cook, often having to get you fast food or something that’s microwavable
He would let you cook if he felt safe enough to leave you around knives and forks
He’ll make sure to get you things to keep you entertained or new hobbies
He keeps a chain on you, enough for you to walk around the apartment but not enough for you to be able to walk out
Multiple locks on the door including a fingerprint one that will alert him if you try to open it
If you ever somehow manage to slip from the “apartment” you’ll be disappointed
You’ll be met with a set of stairs leading down to the front door with even more security you won’t be able to slip by
You realize it wasn’t an apartment he had you in
It was the second floor of a house made to look like an apartment
That’s when you realize you might be able to run but Schlatt will always be miles ahead

TFP: TIMESKIP | RID15 AU
Set 3 Years Post Predacons Rising & 1 Month post RID15 Finale [A Personal Rewrite/AU Of the TFP Kids Post TFP/RID]
Jasper, Nevada has become a quiet place for Jack, Miko and Rafael after their final goodbye with team Prime, and with Ratchet, when word that the Medic was needed reached their comms.
For the next 3 years, it was relative radio silence. No news from Cybertron, though they tried to reach out. They sent so many transmissions to their friends, yet not a single one returned to them.
Almost as if something blocked them from them, like something didn't want them in contact.
So, in the absence of their friends, their robotic family they had loved so much, the trio of kids put their all into making them proud.
They spent every day they could at Hangar E, and every year, on the anniversary of their departure, they would visit the old Outpost Omega-1.
They would hold hope for their friends to reach out, someday.
They had to...right?

Miko dove head first into combat training, thanks to some strings pulled by Agent Fowler. When she wasn't sparring on a mat with her teachers, she was in the hangar, cheered on by Raf and Jack as she learned to translate those moves into the Apex Armor.
After some convincing too, of her parents when she turned 18, and some more strings pulled by Fowler, Miko made the base her home, and lived in Jasper full time. She'd even had her cats brought over from Japan, a fact that made her stay in the hangar less lonely, though she'd spent many dinners at Raf and Jack's homes regardless.
She'd trained her abilities in battle to a fine tuned machine, hoping for the chance to make Bulkhead proud when he walked through the groundbridge someday. Even took to a video diary, to catch him up on everything that had happened since they'd left Earth.

Rafael excelled in his studies to little surprise of many of the others in his presence. The young boy seemed to have matured overnight, and after a letter from Fowler to some colleagues in some colleges, Raf was skipped up a few grades, and was even taking some college courses online, to further his computing knowhow.
Taking up robotics as a hobby mostly, Rafael upkept the remaining Cybertronian tech left by their robotic team members. He remembered every lesson from Ratchet, and from the many times he also tried to help with Bee's voice box, so it was of little surprise to the team when Raf not only upkept but upgraded their base's tech. No better wifi could be found in Jasper, and access to every show they wanted was at their fingertips.
Still, Raf missed Bee, especially after seeing every transmission they sent go unanswered. His best friend had promised to visit, to write them back, call...had...he forgotten them?
He hoped not. Raf could never forget the scout, the one who'd help Raf find his own voice, among the chaos of his own home and family life.

Jack changed the most and the least at the same time. He was still a gentle and quiet soul, but he was fiercely protective now, of Miko and Raf. He dove into his studies, and even skipped a grade, to the surprise of his mother. Studying under her even, Jack learned medical care for his loved ones behalf, especially with all the bruises Miko returned with after her sparring lessons. He joined, once in a while, when he had the energy to, but his energy had shifted to making sure both of his teammates were ok. For his 18th birthday, his mother surprised him with a real motorcycle of his own, after seeing how much he missed Arcee and their rides around Jasper. And Agent Fowler, who had begun dating June at this point, helped hook up Jack with a job alongside him, mainly harmless paperwork, but it would pay better than slinging burgers at KO Drive Inn did, which he appreciated.
His free time was often spent fixing up his bike, and riding out far, along the routes him and Arcee would take. He really hoped their messages would reach them someday.

Takes place 1yr after the ending of RID15/it's finale
June and Fowler got married by the time Jack is 19, which Jack actually was happy about, even if it shocked him a good bit at the start that they did begin to date.
Rafael has been checking every cryptid sighting website he used to, searching for any hint that Team Prime has come back.
Knockout has been, unbeknownst to Cybertronians and humans alike, been sneaking to Earth via rogue groundbridge of his own. It was where he lost Breakdown, and he continues to race still there [Yes this is bc of RID's use of his car model]
The kids came into contact with the Rescue Bots at some point, and they too have had issues contacting Cybertron, something that they tried to work on together but it did little in the end.
The 'Autobot' High Council had put a ban on travel to Earth, and had erased the coordinates from most databanks, as well as disrupting transmission from the kids to team Prime.
Crown City is located California for this AU
Outpost Omega-1 has been abandoned yes,the kids mainly use Hangar E, but regularly visit the old base since it's destruction.

i just want to draw attention to the state of net neutrality in the US for a second. like you can go look at all the headlines I'm not gonna hash out what it did or why it happened, I just wanna point out one of the results I'm personally seeing.
i don't have home wifi. i can't afford it. i access the internet at home using a mobile hotspot provided by T-Mobile. since 45 was sworn in:
75% of the websites i visit are automatically flagged as unsafe connections. I'm talking reddit, store pages for super popular brands, fucking best buy. i cannot access 75% of the internet unless I turn on a VPN. VPNs are not cheap, people. they are a privilege. i can't load fucking CNET to look at tech comparisons without a VPN.
that's what big internet companies wanted to happen, I'm guessing. paywall as much of the internet as they can. so that's that.
