XLOV - Imma Be (Review)

Sorry I was gone for quite a bit. It’s review time again. I was gonna do my Top 10 Worst Songs of 2024 list first but I figured since it’s already taking this long I might as well put out a separate review for something more recent. This group also has some former contestants from Boys Planet 999 so I along with many others were interested to look into the group.

Imma Be -XLOV

I don’t think there’s been a single time where I saw a boy group debut song I wholly liked the entire way through. Not because they’re as god awful as Twitter would have you believe but because sometimes they lack a certain charm. I liked the music video and song because it had a sultry vibe that I’ve yet to see from kpop groups in general as of recent. I also really enjoyed the choreography and how they showed off Rui’s background in ballet (which I know a certain fandom took to heart but that isn’t the point). Overall it’s a pretty solid introduction for a group and I hope they stay consistent with this theme

XLOV Basic Introduction!

XLOV is a 4-member K-Pop boy group under 257 Entertainment. They officially debuted on January 7, 2025 with their first single "I'mma Be". They have a genderless concept, and day of their debut showed love and support for the lgbtq+ community during fancalls.

(The members do not have official positions but I added my own based on what they did for their debut)

The heart emojis are their representative colors that Wumuti gave them.

•He is a former member of the C-pop group SWIN. He debuted in the project group WATERFIRE. He has been a contestant on several South Korean survival shows, Boys Planet, Under Nineteen and Build Up: Vocal Boy Group Survivor. He made his solo debut in 2024. He was a trainee for over 6 years. As he had a big following before debuting he's the only member with a public Instagram, it's now only being used for promotions. Wumuti formed the group himself.

•He was a trainee for 5 years. He is the only member who has no survival show experience. He kinda showed up out of nowhere hence why there's very little information about him.

•Born in Hyogo, Japan on February 18th, 2006.

•Height: 168cm (5'6)

•Vocalist, Rapper, Dancer, Maknae.

•He was a contestant on Boys Planet. He used to be a member of the K-pop dance cover group KIS KPOP.

With some moments of theirs already going viral (Rui having a fancam on twitter of him dancing with over 2M views) I can only hope for the absolute best for these boys! They've worked so hard for many years to get here and to finally debut. I will support them the whole way and I hope you do too!

he usually expresses his love through smaller details rather than grand gestures. to him, remembering small things are far more important than celebrating occasions grandly.

cuddles! he loves them so much, especially when he can wrap himself completely around you. your shared warmth seeps through both of your hearts.

if he finds out that you don’t like some part of yourself, he definitely shows extra love towards that part of you. (like, if you saw you think your thighs are too big? he’s gonna lay on them and tell you they’re perfect for him.)

he loves peppering you with kisses, and loves receiving them too. he also definitely has asked you to make one of those ‘kisses shirts’ for him to wear outside.

he’s such a cute whiny person in the morning because he doesn’t want to let you go from the bed.

"Welcome home, love!" You greeted as you heard the front door click, and in comes your wonderful idol of a boyfriend, Hyun. Hyun brings his head up after managing to remove his shoes, a soft smile in his features as he heard your voice.

You pulled him into a big hug and brought your lips into his, Hyun relishing how you acted around him on such short notice. In hindsight, the two of you weren't that long together in a relationship, but far enough that you could just be whoever you are in the relationship. You knew him way back when he was chronically offline throughout social media. It wasn't that far off or long, but you were there when he decided to debut as one of the members of XLOV, a kpop boy group that goes under the genre of genderless concept of things.

Although you weren't a celebrity or anything near it, you both still love each other to the fullest. Of course, things have to be hidden, and your relationship isn't officially announced. A few of Hyun's friends, specifically his fellow members, Wumuti, Haru, and Rui, knew of the relationship and was completely fine by it. Although Hyun does get a few teases right then and there, it didn't help that Hyun is on the maknae side of things as he was the second youngest, opposing to his tall self.

"Hey, missed you," Hyun said, a smidge of what sounded like a whine as he spoke, "Missed you too," you replied.

The two of you stayed in each other's arms before you decided to bring him to your shared room, letting him change first before plopping into the bed with you. The two of you then started to ramble about each other's day, mostly with Hyun as often times, it can be tiring to be an idol, but he also listens to yours as well. It was until you said something that he somewhat he didn't get.

"I'm sorry, huh?" Hyun asked, not understanding what you said. You tried repeating what you said, in which only confused Hyun even more, confusion now written all over his face.

Thanks to this, you were now also distracted due to Hyun's adorable confused face. You could only chuckle and just hold his face, palms on his cheeks. This only made Hyun even more confused. Why were you suddenly like this now?

As if reading his mind, you chuckled again, "You're so cute, you know that?" you said, giving his cheeks a little squish. Deciding to just go along with it, Hyun chuckled and let you play with his cheeks. Holding you by your wrists, he let you pour all your cuteness aggression to him as it was supposed to be. After a while, you then decided squishing his cheeks weren't enough, you resolve in smooches. Covering his faces with kisses, he could only let you. Why shouldn't he? He was fine and happy, and you were fine and happy as well.

"Are you done?" Hyun asked with a slight chuckle as you now wrapped your arms around him. You only responded with a hum of agreement, placing your face on the skin between his neck and shoulders. Hyun chuckled again, seemingly your cuteness aggression has also not only drained the aggression but also your energy.

Hyun then placed one of his hands on the back of your head and the other by your waist, placing a kiss on the crown of your forehead.

"Sweet dreams, jagiya," he muttered, allowing the both of you to succumb into sleep.

When I learnt that Wumuti hand-picked the members, I got curious why Haru. He didn't stand out in the debut MV, he is short (168 cm vs 175+175+185), and is not a visual. I understood that in part it had to do with who Wumuti found comfortable to work with personally (as a producer, as a future leader whom everyone needs to listen to without complaint) before discovering that he basically adopted Haru, however, I also thought that Haru had to have some special skills (he showed during Boys Planet) to be chosen in the end. In a 4-member group there can't be weak or filler members, everyone has to bring as many fans as possible.

Thankfully, I got my answer in a few days, fansigns and reels already highlight that he is a good dancer (the only highlight he got on BP, blond hair) and has a very easygoing and youthful personality. Even when Chinese hyungs played a joke that was very hard on him as a Japanese (the difference in mentality), he didn't take it to heart. Plus Wumuti-Haru is a ready receipt to sell for the fans who want cute interactions and family feels (as a contrast, Hyun and Rui are still a tidbit awkward around each other, simply by having very different type and speed of reactions to things around them (2:20-2:30), their sensory fields bump into each other).

Haru also looks good in j-rocker make up, so it can be used to bring him forward when a concept will be more on the darker/hooligan side.

I need to convince you to start stanning XLOV because they didn't manage to show their talents full force with the debut single. And talented people who are doing their job properly need support in this industry of often artificially created fame.

First of all, the topic I wanted to touch on for some time. Blind overpraising of idols among k-pop fans and the rabid defence of one's bias.

I'm of an opinion that it is perfectly OK to like a celebrity with weak vocals, bad rapping skills, and clumsy dancing. There are a lot of ways an artist or an idol can make someone's day brighter. Even if just as a topic of conversation, a bridge to connect with other people and find new friends, and nothing more. Or as someone to relate to (life struggles, sense of humour, representation, etc). Likewise, an artist's weak sides can be compensated by his/her strong sides (weak vocal skills vs stage presence, good taste in music, or songwriting skills (Robbie Williams and Sophie-Ellis Bextor are not strong vocalists, but are good pop-stars nonetheless)). However, I also strongly believe that it should be done with a grip on the reality and clear understanding of the bias' strong and weak points. This way it's possible to avoid toxicity towards other fans and self-sabotaging by being overly emotional and defensive to the comments of others pointing out the bias' shortcomings. Like a dozen? Accept it and own it. Find mutuals, and have your happy little world of escape.

That being said, of course I'm also in the camp wanting for talented professionals to do the job and not the lucky Iwannabefamous. And my regard for 127 neos won't stop me from cringing at The momentum's version of "No longer".

One of the irritating aspects of this overpraising of idols is the way it highlights the shallowness of some fans and their overall primitiveness. You are just reminded on a daily basis how many not that intellegent people there are. As an illustration, the way fans take an idol's Great Achievement/Skill and run with it everywhere and brandish it out at every opportunity like it's a diamond certificate, while the said skill is of mediocre level, and there are hundreds of non-idol artists out there who are ways above in this skill and are easily reachable with a click on YT. The way WinWin's fans overpraised him for his Chinese dancing having zero interest in the artform itself, and overlooking how WW couldn't adjust to k-pop dances, and often messed up his steps in 127 choreos. Not only his prior education didn't make him a great ambassador of the Chinese dance (the ability to jump backwards is not enough), it didn't make him into a great k-pop dancer either.

This long ranting (I felt like my posts this year are too short, you missed me rambling, I know, so I didn't hold myself) was a preface to introduction of Rui.

Rui also has studied Chinese traditional dance, modern and ballet. The difference - it shows that he won many dance competitions, and he is able to do k-pop mixed dances as well. In his case his special skills are relevant, and the praise he is getting for them is not overpraising.

In Xlov 3 members can dance, 1 keeps up OK, and among them Rui is the one to stand out in all of k-pop, he is to be pointed out for those who wants to know dancing well idols to follow. Sample one, sample two (on the right), and sample three (the taller one).

There are two members who can sing pretty well, the other two can hold a note as well, so are not awful live during their parts. Wumuti is maybe on Haechan's level? I'm not qualified to judge here. However, the main vocal of the group is definitely Hyun. And considering he practices vocal warm ups daily at the dorm, he is serious about singing, and will only improve with time. Wumuti is a decent level idol, but the interesting part about him is that he is the producer of the group and its concept. He picked the members, came-up with the odd-eye concept and the individual colours for the members, developed the genderless concept, etc. So it will be interesting to see how he will manage in the future. Will a self-produced group become successful, will be there a male version of g-idle. In addition, for those who like Doyoung for being a mom, Wumuti is worse. He already said he gave birth to the group and crowned Haru as his son (7 years difference). So for those who wants cuddles and a cozy family: Sample. Sample (Wumuti on the right both times).

Haru is the maknae, and it is his main selling point, I guess. He is very eager to do what is asked and brings in the energy. Sample one (the 1000%, on the very left). Sample two ("Tokyo Flash" cover, live vocals)

As a group from a very small company (they are the first group debuted) they don't have an opportunity to go on variety shows yet. Grass roots. However, fans post fancams from fansigns, so there is some funny content. As entertainers the four look promising. The desire to interact with fans and do fanservice is there. Their stylist is a very rare case of great taste and creativity, so that person is like the 5th talented person to follow, heh.

The group consists of a Korean, a Japanese, an Uyghur Chinese and a Taiwanese. All speak English to some degree. Haru is still learning Korean, so he is in his awkward phase. Wumuti speaks four languages. Their first IG live shows the kind of vibe they have.

OK, enough. Go give Rui deserved love, heh.
