During World War II, a shadowy hunter concealed from enemy vessels below in the dead of night in the South Pacific. These treacherous nighttime operations, known as "Black Cat" or "Nightmare" missions, would become your squadron's signature, earning you the legendary moniker: "Black Cats." In these early years of the 1940s, under the cloak of darkness, PBY airmen forged their enduring fame. Painted in matte black for optimal stealth, WWII's PBY Black Cats Squadron pioneered a new era of practical and ingenious late-night aerial warfare.

When the men of an 8th Air Force Group gave the town of Thetford, England, a plaque, honoring it as the birthplace of Thomas Paine, American patriot, philosopher and author, the crew of a B-17 thought it appropriate to name their plain 'Tom Paine' and to inscribe the fuselage with one of his famous remarks, 'Tyranny, like Hell, is not easily conquered.'"
