A Goncharov Typography Tuesday

This is one of the official typefaces used for Martin Scorsese’s iconic 1973 film Goncharov, arguably one of the finest Mafia movies ever made. The font first appeared as a calligraphic page in German type designer Rudolf Koch’s 1934 book Das ABC Büchlein published in Leipzig by Insel-Verlag. While other fonts were eventually used for titling and poster design, Scorsese was especially drawn to the chunky rawness of Koch’s design and found ways to incorporate the lettering into the film.

Our sample is from a 1976 facsimile The Little ABC Book of Rudolf Koch, published in America by David R. Godiine in an edition of 1000 copies designed and with a preface by Warren Chappell, a memoir by Koch’s colleague Fritz Kredel, and printed by the Meriden Gravure Company.

1939 Aerial Photo of the Edgewater area. The lakefront extension and Lake Shore Drive hasn't gotten past Foster Avenue yet. At left of center is Rosehill Cemetery, and to it's east is Senn High School, it's north wing not yet built. To the south of Rosehill is Winnemac Park with Amundsen High and Chappell Elementary. The prominent shadows at the lake front are the towers of the Edgewater Beach Hotel complex. At the upper left is the former Edgewater Golf Club, now Warren Park. At lower right is St Boniface Cemetery, and the Uptown Theater.

It’s Fine Press Friday!

This 1943 Limited Editions Club production of Gustave Flaubert’s The Temptation of Saint Anthony, translated by Lafcadio Hearn, was designed and illustrated by American illustrator, and book and type designer Warren Chappell, and printed in New York by the Aldus Printers in an edition of 1500 copies signed by Chappell. The illustrations are lithographs in brilliant colors intended to be reminiscent of stained glass windows. The text is printed in Milwaukee-born Morris Fuller Benton’s 14 pt. Cloister type on rag paper especially produced for this production by the Worthy Paper Company in Mittineague, Mass. The binding by the Russell-Rutter bindery is full linen with a cross and snake device stamped in black, red, and gold.
