Gwen Stacy: The Amazing Spider-Doll

Gwen shook her head as she regained consciousness, pulling back the hood of her costume and removing her mask. Where was she? The shadows were long and alien, and it wasn’t easy to pinpoint the light source…

A heavy aroma hung in the air, almost sickly sweet. A sugary and thick, artificial fruit scent was everywhere, like she was holding a back of Gummi Bears to her nose. She couldn’t orient herself to this terrain, so she closed her eyes completely and let her spider sense guide her.

Crawling up a tall, completely flat wooden surface, she finally reached the roof of this construct and dared to open her eyes. To her surprise, a group of at least a half dozen towering figures stood in the darkness before her.

She leapt back into a defensive crouch, ready to let webs fly at the slightest movement. Why hadn’t her spider sense warned her she was heading into an ambush?

After a second of tense anticipation, Gwen realized the figures hadn’t moved. At all. She shook her head.

Way to get spooked, Stacy. They’re obviously statues.

She approached them cautiously, hoping to find some sort of clue to hear whereabouts in their designs. As her eyes adjusted to the dim light, she had to stifle a laugh when she finally understood what they were:

They were anime girls. Twice life-sized anime girls, all nude or nearly so. Ryuko Matoi, Asuka Langley, Rei Hino…Gwen didn’t recognize the others, but there was no mistaking what-

The sound was like a building collapsing on itself, and the accompanying flood of light was almost enough to render her unconscious again. In the split second before she closed her eyes in pain, Gwen saw her environment in its totality, and felt she must be going mad.

“M…Mysterio, I’m one hundred and ten percent done with this,” she quipped weakly, mostly as a means to convince herself that what she saw was some arch-foe’s attempt to break her mind.

She was in a bedroom. More specifically, she was atop the desk in a bedroom, at most six inches tall. Those towering statues weren’t statues…they were collectible anime girl figurines, which now dwarfed her. That sickly sweet scent was from the candy wrappers and soda cans haphazardly tossed on every surface. The terrifying calamity had been the room’s occupant causally opening the door and turning on the light.

Knows my identity…loves candy and anime…

Gwen suspected her captor even before she opened her eyes again, and was still absolutely befuddled by the revelation.

“Peni Parker?”

The Japanese schoolgirl smiled like the cat that ate the canary as she towered over her fellow Spiderverse warrior. “Hi, Gwen-sempai!” She said with mock sweetness. “It’s so cool you came to visit! I never had a girl in my room before!”

“How…how did…why-?”

The giant young spider-woman’s grin only got wider. “‘How’ was easy! Pym Particles aren’t hard to find. And why? Because you’re my girlfriend now, silly!”

Gwen was already scanning the room, looking for an escape. What she found was…discouraging. Not only was the door the only entrance to the room, she was also seeing the posters on the wall and the books on Peni’s shelves.

Her giant captor had a lot of hentai, and she wasn’t shy about it.

“You’re nuts!” Gwen declared as she leapt from the tabletop, landing and dashing between Peni’s legs to try and reach the door. Unfortunately, Peni’s reflexes were lightning fast as well, and she simply fell back on her ass, trapping Gwen between the canyon of her legs.

With an even greater feeling of dread, Gwen realized that Peni wasn’t wearing anything under her skirt.

“That’s no way to talk to your girlfriend, little Spider-Girl,” Peni giggled. “Let me prove to you how…special you make me feel…”

Steel and glass coffins dotted the lowest floor of Langley. Camera in hand, Spider-Man stepped between rows and rows of the technological caskets, occasionally snapping a picture of the bodies inside. Naked, the forms he saw were immersed in fluid, each with a tube down their throat and half a dozen IVs worming in and out of their skin. Most were adults. Others--and Spider-Man was especially sure to photograph these--were children no older than eight. Their skin was translucent and soft, like it had never seen sunlight or injury or even the friction of clothes. He was careful not to touch any of the coffins. Not yet.

The door to this basement laboratory was ajar and hung off one hinge. It had been locked with an encryption more complex than all the security of Fort Knox, but it had not been designed to withstand a man shoulder-checking it with the force of a speeding truck. A hallway's worth of security guards lay unconscious outside of it; more of them were in the lobby about two hundred feet above, being shown medical attention.

Spider-Man's break-in to the George Bush Center for Intelligence had been dramatic, noisy, and extremely public. He'd made sure of that. For maybe the first time in his career, Peter wanted the world to know what he was investigating. As riots all over the country had ramped up their intensity, as police had been stretched to their absolute breaking point and escalated their brutality further and further, he'd wanted to take an unambiguous stand as to whose side he was on. He wanted all eyes to be on the CIA as he unveiled what he found within, and he wanted the CIA to be too focused on that to direct their efforts towards the angry civilians they would ordinarily be waterboarding by now.

Once he'd smashed his way into the building, though, and incapacitated every security guard in his path, he'd vanished. Spectacle was all very well and good, but the most important research had to be done in the dark.

By now Spider-Man was sure that the men in charge had figured out where he'd already been. Ransacked offices and ripped-open file cabinets weren't exactly a model of subtlety. But he could feel footsteps vibrating through the building, both in the air and in the floor beneath his feet, like a spider sensing a fly in its web. He had a little bit of time left before they realized where he was right now--time to finish taking photos and pull the plug on all these experiments. He'd meet them on his terms and--

His earpieces crackled. "Tiger," whispered Emjay's voice, "I'm compromised."

His eyes widened behind his mask. His hands dropped the camera and let it hang on its strap around his neck, but it bounced wildly against his chest as he sprinted for the door.

"Where are you?" he asked, as he shot through hallways faster than the security cameras could register.

Emjay's voice came in gasps and bursts of feedback. "East wing, janitor's closet. I've barricaded the door but it's not gonna hold long." There was a pounding in the background, like a battering ram. Spider-Man paused at the top of a flight of stairs, feeling that same blow reverberate through the walls and floors of the building--guiding him.

"I sense you," he said, and slammed a door open. CIA agents yelled in surprise as he barrelled past, but Spider-Man barely noticed. His hand went back automatically and splattered webbing across faces and holstered guns. As the mad tingle in his head lessened a bit he whispered, "I'll be there in thirty seconds."

"Can you make it twenty?" Emjay asked, a little sarcastically. There was another pounding against a door, and then...then a hiss. Like black silk across paper. "I...I think Pity's here."

Peter gasped through his nose. He was there in ten seconds.

F-22 Raptors return to Poland 🇵🇱

The U.S. Air Force F-22 Raptor fighters arrived in Poland again, the Polish Ministry of Defense reported on Tuesday.

The group of fighters tried to cross the North Atlantic on April 6 and 7, but it was only on the third attempt on the 8th that the fifth-generation fighters arrived at the Powidz Air Base in Poland. However, there are conflicting reports about whether eight or nine jets completed the journey after some of the planned 12 failed to make the crossing.

"The U.S. Air Force F-22 Raptor fighters landed in Poland," Minister Mariusz Blaszczak wrote on Twitter.

“One of the most modern planes will cooperate with Polish pilots and will continue to provide support on NATO’s eastern flank,” Blaszczak said.

According to the U.S. European Command - U.S. African Command (USAFE-AFAFRICA), the planes that were transferred to Powidz, in western Poland, as part of a rotation mission, belong to the 94th Fighter Squadron at the Langley-Eustis base in Virginia, USA.

The Raptors are taking on the hunting mission of the F-15E Strike Eagles of the 48th Fighter Wing of the Lakenheath RAF Base in Suffolk, which has been performing this task since November 2022.

F-22 fighters were stationed in Poland until last October as part of a NATO mission designed to increase protection against air threats on the eastern flank of the alliance and in the Baltic Sea and Black Sea regions.

10 Things: Mars Helicopter

When our next Mars rover lands on the Red Planet in 2021, it will deliver a groundbreaking technology demonstration: the first helicopter to ever fly on a planetary body other than Earth. This Mars Helicopter will demonstrate the first controlled, powered, sustained flight on another world. It could also pave the way for future missions that guide rovers and gather science data and images at locations previously inaccessible on Mars. This exciting new technology could change the way we explore Mars.

1. Its body is small, but its blades are mighty.

One of the biggest engineering challenges is getting the Mars Helicopter’s blades just right. They need to push enough air downward to receive an upward force that allows for thrust and controlled flight — a big concern on a planet where the atmosphere is only one percent as dense as Earth’s. “No helicopter has flown in those flight conditions – equivalent to 100,000 feet (30,000 meters) on Earth,” said Bob Balaram, chief engineer for the project at our Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

2. It has to fly in really thin Martian air.

To compensate for Mars’ thin atmosphere, the blades must spin much faster than on an Earth helicopter, and the blade size relative to the weight of the helicopter has to be larger too. The Mars Helicopter’s rotors measure 4 feet wide (about 1.2 meters) long, tip to tip. At 2,800 rotations per minute, it will spin about 10 times faster than an Earth helicopter. At the same time, the blades shouldn’t flap around too much, as the helicopter’s design team discovered during testing. Their solution: make the blades more rigid. “Our blades are much stiffer than any terrestrial helicopter’s would need to be,” Balaram said.   The body, meanwhile, is tiny — about the size of a softball. In total, the helicopter will weigh just under 4 pounds (1.8 kilograms).

3. It will make up to five flights on Mars.

Over a 30-day period on Mars, the helicopter will attempt up to five flights, each time going farther than the last. The helicopter will fly up to 90 seconds at a time, at heights of up to 10 to 15 feet (3 to 5 meters). Engineers will learn a lot about flying a helicopter on Mars with each flight, since it’s never been done before!

4. The Mars Helicopter team has already completed groundbreaking tests.

Because a helicopter has never visited Mars before, the Mars Helicopter team has worked hard to figure out how to predict the helicopter’s performance on the Red Planet. “We had to invent how to do planetary helicopter testing on Earth,” said Joe Melko, deputy chief engineer of Mars Helicopter, based at JPL.

The team, led by JPL and including members from JPL, AeroVironment Inc.,  Ames Research Center, and Langley Research Center, has designed, built and tested a series of test vehicles.

In 2016, the team flew a full-scale prototype test model of the helicopter in the 25-foot (7.6-meter) space simulator at JPL. The chamber simulated the low pressure of the Martian atmosphere. More recently, in 2018, the team built a fully autonomous helicopter designed to operate on Mars, and successfully flew it in the 25-foot chamber in Mars-like atmospheric density.

Engineers have also exercised the rotors of a test helicopter in a cold chamber to simulate the low temperatures of Mars at night. In addition, they have taken design steps to deal with Mars-like radiation conditions. They have also tested the helicopter’s landing gear on Mars-like terrain. More tests are coming to see how it performs with Mars-like winds and other conditions.

5. The camera is as good as your cell phone camera.

The helicopter’s first priority is successfully flying on Mars, so engineering information takes priority. An added bonus is its camera. The Mars Helicopter has the ability to take color photos with a 13-megapixel camera — the same type commonly found in smart phones today. Engineers will attempt to take plenty of good pictures.

6. It’s battery-powered, but the battery is rechargeable.

The helicopter requires 360 watts of power for each second it hovers in the Martian atmosphere – equivalent to the power required by six regular lightbulbs. But it isn’t out of luck when its lithium-ion batteries run dry. A solar array on the helicopter will recharge the batteries, making it a self-sufficient system as long as there is adequate sunlight. Most of the energy will be used to keep the helicopter warm, since nighttime temperatures on Mars plummet to around minus 130 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 90 Celsius). During daytime flights, temperatures may rise to a much warmer minus 13 to minus 58 degrees Fahrenheit to (minus 25 to minus 50 degrees Celsius) — still chilly by Earth standards. The solar panel makes an average of 3 watts of power continuously during a 12-hour Martian day.

7. The helicopter will be carried to Mars under the belly of the rover.

Somewhere between 60 to 90 Martian days (or sols) after the Mars 2020 rover lands, the helicopter will be deployed from the underside of the rover. Mars Helicopter Delivery System on the rover will rotate the helicopter down from the rover and release it onto the ground. The rover will then drive away to a safe distance.

8. The helicopter will talk to the rover.

The Mars 2020 rover will act as a telecommunication relay, receiving commands from engineers back on Earth and relaying them to the helicopter. The helicopter will then send images and information about its own performance to the rover, which will send them back to Earth. The rover will also take measurements of wind and atmospheric data to help flight controllers on Earth.

9. It has to fly by itself, with some help.

Radio signals take time to travel to Mars — between four and 21 minutes, depending on where Earth and Mars are in their orbits — so instantaneous communication with the helicopter will be impossible. That means flight controllers can’t use a joystick to fly it in real time, like a video game. Instead, they need to send commands to the helicopter in advance, and the little flying robot will follow through. Autonomous systems will allow the helicopter to look at the ground, analyze the terrain to look how fast it’s moving, and land on its own.

10. It could pave the way for future missions.

A future Mars helicopter could scout points of interest, help scientists and engineers select new locations and plan driving routes for a rover. Larger standalone helicopters could carry science payloads to investigate multiple sites at Mars. Future helicopters could also be used to fly to places on Mars that rovers cannot reach, such as cliffs or walls of craters. They could even assist with human exploration one day. Says Balaram: "Someday, if we send astronauts, these could be the eyes of the astronauts across Mars.”
