More so they are not even considered "white" in general.

Like imagine you see somone being called "typical mexican" in a negative context. First of all it is racist of course but upon further inspection the person in question is not even mexican and have zero connections to Mexico. Thats just some random white dude. And it's very confusing at first but than you see more and more people start using the word "mexican" as a general description of white person, often in a degrading context. And it does not stop at internet weirdos and racist scum, news outlets, celebrities, well meaning people who claim to support diversity and celebrate and respect different cultures do that too. Sounds extremely weird and out of pocket, right? Well this is how i feel when i see yet another random white person being called caucasian for some reason.

You cant just...i dont know...use a name for a very specific, very old and very existing ethnic group to refer to random white people who have no connection to this group. i was able to visually "fix" a mis-encoded tf2chan fic using word's "find and replace" and a UTF-8 debugging chart, creating an offline copy that visually matches what it "should" look like, but it's not a fool-proof process (for example, you have to be very sure to go in order from LONGEST present mojibakes to shortest, or you will not get the right result) and it kind of takes a while. unfortunately there is literally no better way to be doing this from the user end from what i understand, but at least the result is clean.

I might try doing this with other fics for my own enjoyment, but I want to tell others how to do it too, especially for archival.

the cheat sheet is here. for each instance of mojibake put the "actual" in the "find" box, and "expected" in the "replace with" box, and hit "replace all". Again, make sure to go from LONGEST to SHORTEST. first 3 character mojibakes, then 2 character, then if present 1 character. do not go out of order. If something seems off, like if it found and replaced way more end quotes than start quotes, you went out of order.

You will always have the choice to enjoy Astronomy— it’ll be there anyways, forever. You don’t need to be there-there to love it, because you’re right where you need to be. you just need to look up.
