On a semi related note the more I am subjected to Microsoft products the more I become convinced that the reason so many people these days believe themselves to be “bad with computers” is that the programs they are forced to use in their professional life are utterly incomprehensible to ANY rational human being and they are (rightfully enough) extrapolating out that this is just how computers are. They aren't!!! In their quest to remove all the “scary” details from their poor fragile end users Microsoft have created an ecosystem that behaves completely erratically and unpredictably and is by definition unknowable. Things just happen. Then they stop happening. Nothing ever announces why or how. Just a thousand vague and useless popups that may or may not be there tomorrow. I PROMISE computers are actually extremely simple and logical beasts.
#brain.txt#the biggest barrier to widespread linux adoption is the fear of learning something new and i get it i really do#when youre at zero knowledge and dont even know where to begin its completely overwhelming and so much easier to stick with what you know#but the problem is no one ever really knows windows#youre sharing your room with a wild animal#you believe you know its mannerisms well enough to know when it is hungry and what it likes and dislikes but one day it might lash out#and there will be no way of ever knowing why#with open source software the only barrier to knowledge is how far you want your own curiosity to carry you at present#and yeah! ill readily admit!! theres plenty of components of my system i dont know too much about right now#but i feel inherently less lost and helpless knowing that the information is out there and i am actually capable of reading it#instead of someone actively obfuscating all possible attempts at understanding and also constantly changing everything from under me#(i have never owned a mac in my life so idk whats going on over there but my general impression seems to be that mac at least gets the whole#walled garden thing right in the sense that it is a cohesive and functional experience despite being extremely locked in. which i have more#respect for as a solution i am not interested in but i can see the appeal of rather than the FUCKING DISASTER microsoft has unleashed)

You see, America is more efficient than Russia, because it took them 47 tries to get it right, it only took us 15
#yes that number is definitely analogous to a software release version#its like if windows was actually sequential instead of going by the year so they released windows 95 first#that really confused me as a kid like what do you mean windows 95 isn't higher than windows 7#nightblogging#am i unfunny or is it 2am

Okay linux users are really not doing themselves a favor with convincing any normal person who isn’t a full-time programmer to download a distro as their main OS when one of them is fucking named “Fedora”
#come the fuck on#i was going to dual boot windows to keep my music production software but i’m just gonna go linux#i already run it on some of my devices so#blap jabber

It is not physically possible to murder an operating system but I really really want to right now.
Why is my Desktop backed up to OneDrive? Why is it apparently impossible to move anything on my Desktop to the computer hard drive without removing it from the Desktop? My computer should have a fucking desktop that isn't in the cloud and that I don't have to pay to store things on.
What the fuck, Windows 11?
#microsoft i need to commit horrendous acts of violence against your software. let me go back to windows 10 i beg of you#or move on to windows 12. i don't care. just get me out of this hellhole.#everything has gone downhill since windows 8 actually#but fuck windows 11 in particular#i hate the cloud i need to have everything on my own hard drive forever and ever#apps do not go in the cloud! that is the worst place you could put an app! what is wrong with you?! it's no wonder I'm out of storage space#rip tear kill kill kill

"Absolute Power would be good, actually," says usually patient and mild-mannered woman after trying to set up her mother's new computer.
#i would start with asking that someone bring me the heads of the people who designed Windows 11#just as an amuse-bouche#and then we'll go gather those responsible for green-lighting the use of subscriptions for softwares instead of one-time buy#next will be those who don't develop new drivers so you have to buy a new printer because yours is too old even if it works perfectly well#and then we'll be benevolent and ask that the Worshipers of the evil Investors gods renounce their evil ways#and if they don't#well#forests grow well on rotting flesh#blabla

maaaaaan. and now my pc is stuck in a bios loop. tells me it cannot find any bootable devices. checked the cables and everything seems alright?? trying to repair start up thru USB windows installation next but I have a deep dread in me that this could be worse :(
#my guy I Cannot afford this bullshit !#I have no idea why it’s doing this.#could be outdated BIOS software.#could be bad wires.#could be CMOS on motherboard.#god I was so happy to finally have it work today and it still fucking won’t.#I’m so upset.#I hope nothing is damaged with the harddrive.#and if it is. I hope the files are recoverable.#I think the extra SSD is fine. which means my bg3 saves should be okay.#but the other drive?? bro I’m an idiot.#not all of that is backed up. I could lose. so much art.#again. it LOOKS fine. I don’t think it’s the drives themselves.#if the USB start up repair doesn’t work I have to go back to the computer store though. Again.#my fucking laptop is struggling so hard to even get the windows 10 installation files downloaded onto the USB#I’m SOOOOO tired man.#like Nothing is going well.

being a kid was thinking surely being an adult can’t be that bad but i just spent 2 and a half hours on a thursday morning trying to install a new antivirus on my laptop and now i either have to kill myself or go out and spend 7 dollars on coffee to cope
#like. it’s the little things like that that just. eat away at your soul or something like i get it now.#it took 2 hours because i just bought the one i bought last year bc i had such a terrible fucking time last year#uninstalling the old one and trying to remove every part of it bc i have a macbook and i don’t know how to use it still so i can’t#control panel uninstall like om windows. so anyway i just rebought the new version and i download it and the first thing it says to me??????#uninstall old software. BRO. you ARE the old software. but ok so i spend 30 minutes doing that#with the goddamn library/ whatever folders over and over and over again and on my moms laptop too#and so i’m like ok i think i got it all so i go to install it again and it’s like. you have no internet or the program isnt working.#try again. so i’m like. ok. so i do and it’s like ok. so i wait 30 more minutes before i’m like ??#anyway i go back and read the description of the thing and yeah last yeah they phased out my os#SO i’m like ok. ok. now i already spent the money on something i can’t use and ofc i bought it through amazon so when i called the company#they were like we can’t help u i’m like yeah i didn’t think so but thanks anyway. anyway. amazon helped me and i got a different program and#that installed in 3 minutes so anyway fuck apple for always phasing out old os and fuck mcafee for doing it too#and my mom and i have been fighting for like 2 weeks now and i’m just truly reaching my limit#but i still have to go out and buy her a bday present this afternoon like why can’t life just be good and fun ever

I use this software.
It's an easy way to turn off settings in windows that you'd normally have to put a bit of effort in to find. Settings like trackers and a bunch of other stuff.
It works for windows 10
Revo Uninstaller is a great program for force uninstalling programs you couldn't uninstall otherwise. Like Microsoft Edge.
If you use it to uninstall edge and its not finding the program when you search for it, you'll have to open edge, then use the target mode which allows you to select desired programs manually.
target the opened Microsoft edge window and it'll start the process.
The cool thing about this program is that is does a hard uninstall, completely wipes out everything related to the program and it's stuff in the registry.
might I add, if you uninstall Microsoft edge, it will remove copilot as well. I've done this and it's been a few months since then I think. I've updated my laptop a few times and it hasn't come back. though if you want to avoid edge from coming back with an update, here's a vid on the more indepth process of its removal.
Something I usually do is go into my app manager or program manager window and read through what all is installed. I delete anything I didn't install myself and doesn't have a purpose. If you're not tech savvy, have a web browser open to search for programs you don't recognize. if it looks necessary, leave it alone. Usually windows is pretty good about not letting you uninstall important programs but it's good to play it safe.
Doing this whenever you notice a sudden dip in pc performance is a great way to catch unwanted programs that may have slipped in with something you downloaded recently. Paired with a good anti malware program like Malwarebytes, youre pretty much golden.
last tip.
It's a pretty good practice to Optimize and Defrag your harddrive regularly. It basically does a clean sweep of your harddrive by deleting unnecessary files.
Here's a link to instructions on how to do that. When you set about this process, you should have an option of to what degree the clean up is done (meaning what files is targeted), how regularly this process happens.
It usually deletes residual files, stuff in your downloads folder, trash folder, and stuff like that. you'll get to see what all is there when you do it before you confirm the clean up.
After doing all that, you've got yourself a nice and clean pc that should work better than it did before.
All the programs I linked to are free and can be used without paying for them.
I've been super into computers since I was kid so these are pretty solid methods of pc maintainance on the virtual side. If you have a proper box pc, and I guess if you're feeling brave enough to open up your laptop, don't forget to clean use an air duster to clean out your consul.
I promise you, nothing will help more than a clean pc and cooling fans.
i thought my laptop was on its last leg because it was running at six billion degrees and using 100% disk space at all times and then i turned off shadows and some other windows effects and it was immediately cured. i just did the same to my roommate's computer and its performance issues were also immediately cured. okay. i guess.
so i guess if you have creaky freezy windows 10/11 try searching "advanced system settings", go to performance settings, and uncheck "show shadows under windows" and anything else you don't want. hope that helps someone else.
#its because the os is not properly optimized#you have to debloat it then strip it down to bare bones before doing anything#in regards to windows running like shit#you see#windows is an accordian of itself#its backwards compatibility isnt a simulator#its still got its old old code deep in there#im not sure how far back it is#but in windows 11 when it first came out#you could right click and back pedel in a sense to older option menues#meaning it just kept going into the code and you would get older option menu designs#backwards compatibility is good#but i feel like windows needs to be gutted and scrubbed clean#then new lighter software needs to be developed for backwards compatibility#i doubt it would happen but honestly windows is such a heavy and chunky os#mac and chrome os is relatively light by comparison#its because mac is office work targeting so theres not as much bloat going on there#someone correct me if im wrong though#this is in regards to windows running like shit#windows 10

idk if people on tumblr know about this but a cybersecurity software called crowdstrike just did what is probably the single biggest fuck up in any sector in the past 10 years. it's monumentally bad. literally the most horror-inducing nightmare scenario for a tech company.
some info, crowdstrike is essentially an antivirus software for enterprises. which means normal laypeople cant really get it, they're for businesses and organisations and important stuff.
so, on a friday evening (it of course wasnt friday everywhere but it was friday evening in oceania which is where it first started causing damage due to europe and na being asleep), crowdstrike pushed out an update to their windows users that caused a bug.
before i get into what the bug is, know that friday evening is the worst possible time to do this because people are going home. the weekend is starting. offices dont have people in them. this is just one of many perfectly placed failures in the rube goldburg machine of crowdstrike. there's a reason friday is called 'dont push to live friday' or more to the point 'dont fuck it up friday'
so, at 3pm at friday, an update comes rolling into crowdstrike users which is automatically implemented. this update immediately causes the computer to blue screen of death. very very bad. but it's not simply a 'you need to restart' crash, because the computer then gets stuck into a boot loop.
this is the worst possible thing because, in a boot loop state, a computer is never really able to get to a point where it can do anything. like download a fix. so there is nothing crowdstrike can do to remedy this death update anymore. it is now left to the end users.
it was pretty quickly identified what the problem was. you had to boot it in safe mode, and a very small file needed to be deleted. or you could just rename crowdstrike to something else so windows never attempts to use it.
it's a fairly easy fix in the grand scheme of things, but the issue is that it is effecting enterprises. which can have a looooot of computers. in many different locations. so an IT person would need to manually fix hundreds of computers, sometimes in whole other cities and perhaps even other countries if theyre big enough.
another fuck up crowdstrike did was they did not stagger the update, so they could catch any mistakes before they wrecked havoc. (and also how how HOW do you not catch this before deploying it. this isn't a code oopsie this is a complete failure of quality ensurance that probably permeates the whole company to not realise their update was an instant kill). they rolled it out to everyone of their clients in the world at the same time.
and this seems pretty hilarious on the surface. i was havin a good chuckle as eftpos went down in the store i was working at, chaos was definitely ensuring lmao. im in aus, and banking was literally down nationwide.
but then you start hearing about the entire country's planes being grounded because the airport's computers are bricked. and hospitals having no computers anymore. emergency call centres crashing. and you realised that, wow. crowdstrike just killed people probably. this is literally the worst thing possible for a company like this to do.
crowdstrike was kinda on the come up too, they were starting to become a big name in the tech world as a new face. but that has definitely vanished now. to fuck up at this many places, is almost extremely impressive. its hard to even think of a comparable fuckup.
a friday evening simultaneous rollout boot loop is a phrase that haunts IT people in their darkest hours. it's the monster that drags people down into the swamp. it's the big bag in the horror movie. it's the end of the road. and for crowdstrike, that reaper of souls just knocked on their doorstep.
