Summer is here! The weather is nice! The sun is shining! And we have a lot of fun events coming up. Read on for more info.

Sunday, June 1 -

Educator Event with Sarah. 10AM-5PM. Our kids' expert Sarah will present info for K-12 educators getting ready for next school year. With discounts, Advanced Reading Copies, and giveaways galore, this annual event is a great way to see what's happening in the kidlit world. 

Thursday, June 12 -

Virtual Knitting Book Club. 6-7 PM. This month we're reading Monk and Robot by Becky Chambers. All levels of knitters (and crocheters, and any other type of yarn-handicraft doers) are welcome! All discussions are held on Zoom.

Thursday, June 19 -

Island Kids Book Club, 1st & 2nd Graders. 5-5:45 PM. This month we're reading Wishtree by Katherine Applegate. This book club is perfect for 1st and 2nd graders who love to read and want to make new friends.

Kalehua Kim, Mele. 6:30-7:30 PM. A longtime customer and friend, we are thrilled to host Kalehua's launch event for Mele, her debut collection of poetry! Kalehua and friends will read from the collection, followed by a signing.

Monday, June 30 -

The first day of our new Kids' Summer Reading Camp! 10 - 11 AM. Calling all kids ages 5-12! This summer Island Books is hosting a Summer Reading Camp! Stop into our Children’s department to listen to our booksellers read excerpts from fabulous chapter books (10-10:30) and middle grade novels (10:30-11), get your summer camp passport stamped, and earn a paperback book of your choice from our bookshelves. Attend 5 of the 9 sessions and turn your summer reading camp passport in for a paperback children’s book of your choice! (Sessions run every Monday from June 30 to August 25).

Saturdays -

Story Time with Nancy Stewart. 9:30-10 AM. Nancy Stewart brings her guitar, her favorite picture books, and her fabulous self to sing catchy songs and get kids interested in reading. Great activity for toddlers, and you’ll find yourself singing along, too!

Sundays -

The Mercer Island Farmers Market is back for the summer! 10 AM - 2 PM. Wander on down to Mercerdale Park for some weekly shopping, sunshine, and live music, and then stop by the bookstore for your next read on your way home.

June: Baby-Sitters Club Giveaway! Calling all Claudias, Staceys, Mary Annes, and the rest of the BSC crew! This June we are celebrating the series with a pre-order promotion, character swag, and a beach towel and character pin giveaway. All Summer Long -

Seattle Arts & Lectures Summer Book Bingo! Print off your bingo card of choice (kids, teens, or adults), pick up a book (or several), and try to get bingo or blackout by Tuesday, September 2! BINGO: Complete a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal line! Turn in your card and you’ll be entered into a drawing for a commemorative tote bag (for adults) or a gift card (for kids and teens). Where's Waldo returns! All month long. Look for little Waldos hiding at Island Books and across Mercer Island at participating businesses. It's a great summer activity with active kiddos, and it encourages us to get out and support local!

We have an updated website! Nancy did an amazing job with the transition, and now we have a beautiful, shiny, new website to use. It'll look great on your computer and your phone! We hope you enjoy using it. Returning customers will need to reset their password.

It is also worth noting that bigotries are often intertwined. One of the main human characters in Wishtree is Samar-a lonely Muslim girl who wishes for a friend. Communities learning to show up for their neighbors and come together to combat hate like Islamophobia/xenophobia is a major theme.

In the book, originally published in 2017, the tree claims an identity that is “both” female and male and responds to diverse pronouns: “Call me she. Call me he. Anything will work.” (Trees have four primary systems of reproduction.) The school’s reading program kicked off on March 4 and was already underway when parent Jodi Farmer, whose children attend a private Christian academy in neighboring Carroll County, took to Facebook to inform Floyd County residents about the reference to gender. Farmer challenged Wishtree's nonbinary account of the oak's identity, calling the book "indoctrination at its finest."

like i dont think pieceys would considering they're fabric and don't have internal organs but faewish sprites are made of flesh(??) so like, do they have to excrete

there aren't any bathrooms in the wishtree but tbf there's no public bathrooms anywhere. so is it the norm in wishfield/the heartcraft kingdom/miraland for bathrooms to be specifically in homes? fyi i haven't played other nikki games yet so sorry if this has been mentioned before but i highly doubt they'd touch into this subject lmao

so either:

they have restrooms in those little house things on the tree

they go like an animal and bury it in nature (not likely as they have human intelligence and roughly the same idea as humans on what's gross)

they don't excrete at all and wish orbs do not cause waste product in the body. and maybe just don't have anything down there as well

on that note, do they reproduce sexually (if they have genitals) or asexually. of course they have the little babies that wake up on the ceremony but how do those babies come into existence in the first place. do they magic it into the world via really hard thinking?

You stood in front of the huge tree and observed it. You remembered your grandmother's words 'this tree fulfills everyone's wishes'. Can it be true? How can a tree fulfill everyone's wishes?

A lot of questions ran through your mind. As a 21st century girl you don't believe in such things but still you wanted to give it a try. What is wrong with trying?

"Dear tree, I want someone in my life who will love me wholeheartedly and will never leave me. I want someone who can do anything for me."

You chuckled at your silliness. Like the tree is really listening to you and will fulfill your wish. It's so stupid to think that but you wished the tree would really fullfill your wish.

Then you remembered its getting late and you should head home. Your grandmother must be worried about you. You stole a last glance at the tree and went your way.

You were waiting in the station for your train to arrive. Though you don't want to go back to your parents, you have to. Your school will reopen in a few days and you can't miss it.

You will really miss your grandmother because you think that she is the only one who truly loves you. Your parents are most of the time out on business trips and you have to stay alone in the big mansion of yours.

You had a pretty good time with your grandmother. You helped her in the field and helped her cook. The people were pretty good too. The thing you will miss the most is that big tree, which people call as 'wishtree'. You don't believe in fullfilling people's wish part but whenever you came near the tree it calmed you. You don't know how but you felt like you were at peace whenever you sat under that tree.

You then realised your train has finally arrived. You bid a final goodbye to your grandmother who came to drop you at the station and got up in the train.

It's been a week you returned back but you already miss your grandmother and the countryside. School has been stressful for you due to the approaching examination. It was not like you got bad grades instead you were the topper.

You were currently going to your friend's house. You both decided to study together. Suddenly you bumped into someone hard causing you to stumble backwards.

"Can't you see and walk?"

You exclaimed balancing yourself.

"I'm sorry"

You heard a deep voice. You looked towards the direction to find a tall and handsome man, standing just a feet away from you. You were awestruck by the man's beauty. Is he real?

"Y/N"

Your strain of thoughts were broken by the man wishpering your name but enough for you to hear it. Wait, but how does he knows your name? You stared at him with confusion visible in your face.

"Do I know you?"

He was taken back by your question. It seemed like he didn't expect that. Just then he did something unexpected he pulled you towards him. Your body hit his rock hard chest.

"I-I am your Tae. Do you not remember me?"

There was a hint of sadness visible in his eyes. You don't know but why your heart melted at that. Do you know him? Tae- you only know one person whose name starts with Tae and thats your bully Taeyong.

You were busy thinking if you know him or not but then you realised how uncomfortable position you both were in. His 'that' thing was touching your belly and it gave a really unusual sensation. You tried to escape from his hold but he was too strong.

"Listen mister, I don't know how you know me but I don't know you. So please let me go, I'm getting late."

As the words left your mouth he tightened his hold on you. His eyes that were filled with sadness a few seconds ago, was now filled with fury. You were struggling in his hold.

"STOP LYING Y/N! HOW CAN YOU FORGET ME? We promised to remember each other and always be with each other."

He yelled at you but nothing entered your brain. What the hell was he saying? Did he just hit his head on a rock or did he run away from a mental hospital?

"Listen mister, please leave me. I don't know you."

He started squeezing you to an extent that you body stared paining. You couldn't handle this anymore and decided to call for help.

"HELP ME!"

You yelled and as you expected a group of people came running towards to your direction. They saw you struggling in the stranger's hold and pulled him away from you.

As they were successful in doing so you escaped from there. Without daring to look back you walked ahead in the direction of your friend's house.

"I WILL GET YOU Y/N. YOU CAN'T ESCAPE FROM ME."

"You are late."

You friend said to you. You without saying anything you entered inside her house and directly went upstairs to her room. Your friend followed right behind you.

"Y/N did yo-"

Your friend was about to say something but paused when she saw your face. You had fresh tears rolling down your eyes.

"Y/N, were you crying?"

You quickly wiped your face at your friend's comment and tried to smile. You didn't wanted to trouble her with your problem but it was too late she already caught you crying.

"What is the matter? You can share it with me."

Then you said her everything about today's incident and about that strange man. She comforted you and tried to make you feel better.

"Be strong Y/N. Nothing will happen. I'm there for you, right?"

You just nodded your head. She gave you a huge smile and by now the tears in your eyes already dried up.

"Thanks Sohee."

Unknown POV:

I watched Y/N through the window of what I assume to be her friends house. I kept on watching her from here and thankfully she didn't notice me. She would probably freak out if she sees me. A few people who passed from there stared weirdly at me but a glare from me was enough to bring them on the path.

I can't believe my eyes I finally found her. The first time I saw her today I was so happy that now we can finally be together and leave a happy life together. My all hopes crushed when I got to know she doesn't remember anything.

We promised to remember each other always even in the next life when we were dying. Then how come she doesn't remember me? But now it doesn't matters if she remembers me or not because no matter what she is mine. I'm not letting her go this time.

Flashback:

"Leave Y/N, I can't leave without her."

I yelled and struggled in the grip of the soldiers holding me tightly. I watched my brother preparing his sword to kill Y/N, my love. I tried to free myself but was unable to. I kept yelling at my brother to leave Y/N but it all went to deaf's ears. I watched my parents standing a few feet away from us enjoying the show.

Our only fault was falling in love with each other. She was I peasant while I was the prince and according to my family a prince can't fall in love with a peasant it was considered as a disgrace to the family. My father decided to punish me by ordering to execute Y/N in front of me but I can't let her die.

Then I saw my brother ready to execute her. My eyes went wide, I won't let him kill her. I used all my a strength and escaped the hold of the soldiers. Y/N closed her eyes knowing what fate holds for her. But before the sword could hit her, I stood in front of her. A few seconds later I felt an excruciating pain on my abdomen.

My brother realised what he and just done. He quickly withdrew his sword from my body and I dropped on the ground and my head was about to hit the ground. But before my head could hit the ground Y/N grabbed it and placed on her lap.

"Why did you do that Tae?"

Tears continuously escaped her eyes and fell on my face. I gave her a painful smile. Right now nothing mattered to me except Y/N. I was happy to protect her and take my last breath on her lap.

"You can't leave me, Tae. You'll never leave me."

"Y-Y/N p-romise m-me t-th-at y-you'll f-forever r-remember m-me a-and if w-we g-get a s-second l-li-life we'll b-be t-together."

I just then noticed one of the guards was right behind Y/N with a sword in his hands, ready to stand her. Before I could say anything he stabbed her. Y/N paused for a minute as she felt the pain take over her. I failed to protect her.

"I-I p-romise T-Tae."

With that we took our last breath before falling asleep forever. At least if we can't leave together we're going to die together. Not expecting to get a second chance to complete out incomplete love story.

End Of Flashback

You woke up in the middle of the night finding Sohee not there beside you. Yes, you stayed back at her house because she suggested it. You were already going through a lot due to today's incident so she thought it would be better if you stayed with her.

Just then you heard a weird sound that you assume was of dragging something. It was weird because you and Sohee were only in the the house and what is Sohee doing at midnight.

You got up and headed downstairs to check on Sohee. You went down in the leaving room. There you spotted a shadow dragging something through the moonlight entering from the open window. You remember closing it.

"Who is there?"

You went towards the switch board and switched on the light. As you switched on the light a horrifying scene came to your sight. You couldn't help yourself from screaming in horror.

Just a few feet away from you stood the same stranger, his dress was covered in blood. He was holding the body of Sohee who was covered in blood too. You ran towards her body and grabbed her.

"Wake up, Sohee."

You tried to wake her up. You could feel that her body was losing warmth indicating - no, it can't happen. She can't leave, she is the only friend you have. Just then you heard a laughter.

"What did you do to her?"

"I got rid of her."

He said with an evil smirk. He then grabbed you by your arms and brought you closer to him. Your body hitting his hard chest once more

"I got rid of her and I'll get rid of anyone who dares to come in between us."

"I HATE YOU MONSTER."

You yelled at him but he just chuckled at you. You don't know what you have done to end up in this situation.

"It doesn't matter if you hate me or not but you are mine. I can do anything to have you-"

Dear tree, I want someone in my life who will love me wholeheartedly and will never leave me. I want someone who can do anything for me.

"I can kill for you and even die for you."

Just then it hit you the 'wishtree' or so as people called. You now regret your wish. Maybe it's all because of it. The tree really fulfills people's wish. Maybe you should have never wished for something like that.

In the year 371, blessed by The Wishing One, the inhabitants of Old Florawish gathered splendid, robust stones to create a statue of The Wishing One. Upon hearing this, The Wishing One's descendants flew over jungles and lakes to His side, relaying what they had seen.

In the presence of all things in the field, The Wishing One declared, "I am aware of your devotion, and shall bless those who believe in wishes."

The sky was instantly lit with divine radiance, and glimmering golden paper fell from the heavens, landing in everyone's hands and unfolding into paper cranes. Brimming with awe and gratitude, the townsfolk silently voiced their wishes, and the cranes flew toward the Dream Warehouse, carrying the people's wishes. The Wishing One used His mighty power to grant the wishes written on the paper carried by the cranes. From then on, the people of Old Florawish named the paper "Wishflight Paper," and thanked The Wishing One, singing praises in His name. They understood that their wishes had been graced and blessed by The Wishing One.
