Merricat/Constance:

Mutual obsession, codependency and isolation sisters win

They happily isolate each other and follow these rules that nobody else understands, Merricat only cares about Constance and Constance would do anything for Merricat, no matter what Merricat does, and seemingly not out of fear, but out of love

When there's a possible love interest for Constance (who also happens to be said looks like their dad), Merricat wants him dead and in the end, even though Constance seemed more she could be a part of society, she chooses Merricat over him and over everyone else

Declan/Ronan:

Estranged brothers who beat the shit out of each other in parking lots, which is just UST central

We spend the first three and a half books (out of seven in total) thinking they mutually hate each other, until we realize that Declan has spent his entire life trying to protect and shelter Ronan

Declan's parentification is intense, made worse by their parents' early deaths, and his entire sense of self is cannibalized by his devotion to and resentment of his younger brother(s). Meanwhile, Ronan is a mess of anger and sublimated self-loathing, rebelling against Declan's authority as his legal guardian because he knows deep down that Declan is one person who is never going to give up on him, no matter how much he may fuck up or push him away

Declan doesn't even believe in god anymore but he still drives a 4-hour round-trip every week to go to mass with Ronan. The catholicism really jumps off the page, and with that comes HELLA daddy issues too, as both boys are canonically "made in their father's image" (the father, Niall, strongly and repeatedly paralleled with god) -- Ronan to the point of being an almost identical copy of him, so Declan/Ronan carries with it shades of Declan/Niall too

When they were small children, after Ronan (a supernatural entity not born in the traditional fashion) was brought into the family, their parents had decided to kill Ronan out of fear of what he would grow to be. They only didn't do so because when they went to carry out the deed, they found Declan cuddled up in bed with him, comforting him in his loneliness.

Declan shoots up an entire building at the mere insinuation that his brother is dead for good. Carried around his limp (alive?) body for a bit. Ronan is psychosexually obsessed with Declan's sex life + describes him unnecessarily erotically in his POVs. Both hot (CRUCIAL)

"Declan loved Ronan. And so Ronan lived."

Happy N7 Day!

Well, I was going to share the next Rhys and Kaidan chapter with you all today, seeing as it's N7 Day (and ironically, Rhys never goes to ICT! lol).

HOWEVER, technology gremlins had a different plan. The entirety of Chapter 4 - all 5K plus of it - is corrupted and irretrievable. For the SECOND time this year.

Thankfully, I'd printed a copy out at the end of last week, before I made some big edits. So, I have a copy that's mostly good to go. I'll never be able to remember all the edits I'd made (and damn, some were good and there was a big addition in there, too, I think?), but at least I have a working copy I can try to reconstruct it from.

So, maybe by next week? We'll see how it goes.

In the meantime, hope you all enjoyed N7 day, and have a few pictures of Rhys and Kaidan from the series People Like Us!

Summary: One of the first human biotics, prothean specialist Dr. Rhys Shepard has fought for years to distance himself from the events at BAaT and distance himself from his parents and their military careers. When a prothean beacon is discovered on Eden Prime, he snatches the chance to finally prove himself.

Until the geth attack and he comes face to face with a part of his past he thought long dead...

Chapter 4: One Step Closer

Excerpt:

"I'm no Indiana Jones, Ryder, and I’m certainly no Johnny Cash." Out of the darkness to Rhys' left, a familiar voice calls from the shadows, "They named the dog Indiana, as I recall." Another memory flash returns - secret movie nights at BAaT, stolen snacks from the kitchens, and whispered commentary as they sit in the dark - and Rhys pinches his nose.  Of course, Kaidan would remember that.  A glance to his left finds Kaidan slipping from the shadows and Williams is behind him.  That isn’t a surprise as she joined the Normandy crew right after Eden Prime, but the three figures following her - a quarian, a turian, and a krogan - are unexpected.  The purple and silver hooded quarian is the first of the three to speak.  "What's a dog?" To Rhys' surprise, it’s the krogan who answers.  "Varren-like creature, but smaller and with fur." "Fur?" Williams clarifies, "Animal hair." "Ah."

Just a few things to note:

1) Rhys is a slightly older Shepard, a combination of a spacer and Earthborn background, and non-military. He goes off to college and graduate school and becomes a prothean specialist

2) He and Kaidan have known one another since BAaT. They have a history together.

3) Kaidan is the Commander of the Normandy. He essentially takes over the role of Shepard in the ME canon timeline

This story isn't a retelling of all of game 1, but will use bits and pieces of it that fit for their story.
