Top 10 Favorite Yakuza Karaoke Songs

As you might tell from this Tumblr's music playlist, there are a lot of Yakuza karaoke songs on here. If I counted correctly, out of 135 songs currently, 41 are karaoke songs. And that's not even all of them from the games either, as a lot were cut. Some used to be on here, like Rouge of Love or Heartbreak Mermaid.

And now that it's been half a year since 8 came out, and thus half a year since I've been listening to the new karaoke songs... which ones are my top 10 favorite?

10: Otomeiro My Life

4, Sawamura Haruka, Otomeiro My Life, #47 Kiwami, Sawamura Haruka, Otometal My Life, #30

The song whose title has confused me when I first saw it as I had no idea what it meant. The title that was given was "Otometal My Life" (the "metal" version of Otomeiro) in Kiwami. And then in 4, it was titled "My Maiden Colored Life", which made no sense to me. And so I looked up the Japanese title, and... I am more confused. Otome (女: woman/girl) iro (色: color) My Life. Now, while that is a direct "translation", what confused me was the fact that this title was on a song sung by a 9 year old (Kiwami) and then a 14 year old (4) girl. Because 女色 means... um... feminine sexual attractiveness, usually used to describe how lustful a man is. In fact, while 色 means color, when used in reference with anything other than actual colors, it always means lust. So... um... yeah.

Well, it's Japan. They use these letters wrong. And I say wrong because it's not their letters to change the meaning on their whim. I did notice a few other misusages. Like... they use the word for "origin" 本 for "book", when there already is a word for "book" 書 (or 冊, usually both at once in reference to a book), the word that's used in the word for "library", "book store", and "read". Whatever. That's between China and Japan, which is a bit odd, since neither of them made the language.

Anyways. The lyrics are innocent enough, so it's fine.

This song is up here because it's the first Haruka song I've seen in the Yakuza games. And... also a very not-fond memory of Haruka telling me to get 95% on it for one of her absurd requests in "Haruka's Trust" system. I had to try 14 times to get that score. A nightmare then, but a fond memory now.

A non-karaoke French variant, of all things, shows up in Yakuza 5, as one of the background music tracks during Haruka's (and Akiyama's) dance-battles. #63: Couleur d'une jeune fille. Color of a young girl? I suspect RGG just looked it up on the Japanese-French dictionary. ... Which I suspect they did similar for the Korean dialogues in Yakuza 2, 6, and 7, since the appearing Korean characters say stuff that no one actually says in a conversation.

9: Summertime Groove

8, Kasuga Ichiban (+ Adachi Koichi), #96

Hey, a new song! And a truly new song for Kasuga, whose karaoke songs in this game consists of those from previous games for the most part. And it encapsulates the bright tone of his party, going to Hawaii and all. I just love the tone and pacing of this. And Adachi's role in the song is just too funny too.

8: TONIGHT -restart from this night-

Kiwami, Kiryu Kazuma, #27 6, Kiryu Kazuma Kiwami 2, Kiryu Kazuma 7 Gaiden, "Joryu"/Kiryu Kazuma 8, "Suzuki Taichi"/Kiryu Kazuma

The first song to have appeared in every single game after its debut, when it made sense to do so (so not in Ishin).

Where Kiryu sings about his best friend/sworn brother who had gone down the dark path, who dies at the end of Kiwami, so in future games, he's singing about his dead brother who he can never see again. Ow my heart. I first heard this song after I beat Kiwami because I didn't bother with karaoke at the time. And... ouch. Though it's been 4 years at this point so the pain has been dulled. But still, the fact that Kiryu sings this in every game after Kiwami shows how much he misses Nishiki. Ow.

7: Hands

6, Kiryu Kazuma, #70 7 Gaiden, "Joryu"/Kiryu Kazuma 8, "Suzuki Taichi"/Kiryu Kazuma

... Another song to have appeared in every single game since its debut when it makes sense (so not in Kiwami 2, which is before the events of 6).

So in Yakuza 6, Kiryu comes out of jail and finds out that Haruka was hit by a car and is in a coma, quite possibly never waking up ever again. And she had a baby boy with her. The name on him is "Sawamura Haruto". He is Haruka's son. But who's the father and where is he? With the baby's only caretaker is a coma, child services try to take Haruto away to an orphanage, so Kiryu effectively kidnaps him to look after him in Haruka's stead while looking for the father and beat the sh*t out of-

So for the entirety of Yakuza 6, Kiryu looks after Haruto, until the very end when Haruka wakes up, he returns her son, and then... "dies" in front of her during the final confrontation. And so the final cutscene in the game is Haruka making Haruto practice walking while Kiryu watches on from a distance before he walks away from his adopted daughter and her son forever. Ow, my heart.

And then in Yakuza 6's Premium Adventure, which only unlocks after clearing the story, a new karaoke song is added. Hands. Unlike all the other songs, this one is full-length, so a full 3+ minutes instead of the usual 1.5 minutes. So you get to play through that minigame while devastated, but recovering. And for the last 30ish seconds of that song, the video/images that are shown are flashbacks of Kiryu taking care of Haruto, the grandson he can never see again.

And so the pain comes back two-fold. Ow my heart. Again. I cried so much at the end of 6. And then again when I played through Hands the first time. And since then, just listening to the song brings back the pain.

And Kiryu sings this song every damn game after 6. Which means, he always sings about his dead brother who he can never see again, and his grandson who he can also never see again. "Good" thing he doesn't have a new song about his adopted daughter who he can never see again. As much as that was a huge missed opportunity in 7 Gaiden, I'm glad it was avoided. I don't think I could handle that.

6: So Much More!

5, Sawamura Haruka, #60

Moving away from songs that may or may not make me cry still, is a song that does the complete opposite. This is Haruka's song in her idol career's first Princess League battle. So normally, it wouldn't be considered as a karaoke song, but this appears in the karaoke place's song listing in Yakuza 5, so... it counts.

This song is heard about 30 times more than necessary during the events of Yakuza 5 and completing Haruka's idol tasks, but that's a recurring theme in that game where everything lasts a bit too long and is repetitive. Still though, I like the song. It's nice to see and hear Haruka being cheerful... for the last time, before everything goes to hell.

5: A Perfect Day to be Hungry

Ishin, Haruka (... Sawamura Haruka), #117

This song is called something different everywhere, but Haruka only has one "karaoke" song in Ishin, so... that one. Unlike the others, Haruka got to keep her name. But not her surname. So she's just Haruka. Which means the Ishin interaction between "Kiryu" and "Haruka" is still exactly the same as Kiryu and Haruka, where "Kiryu" calls her as just Haruka, and she calls him as oji-san.

The original Ishin came out between Yakuza 5 and 0, but I got to play it when Ishin Kiwami came out in 2023, which is between Yakuza 7 and 7 Gaiden, as in, after 6. So every Haruka scene hurt me, since she has a miserable life in Ishin until "Kiryu" comes along to save her. Again. And then her "karaoke" song, which unlocks after resolving the entirety of her debt, is a very happy one where she's clearly very happy. Aww. I really needed that.

4: Machine Gun Kiss

I can't really explain it. I just really like it. No other feels attached. For once. Maybe it's because I really like the animation that plays during it.

Oh, and Shinada sings it too. That guy... hmm... he's a good dude, but doesn't belong in the game as a player character. Because who the fu-

And surprisingly, a variant of this song turns up in Ishin, of all places, during a... noodle serving minigame. #120: A Cup of Kisses. ... Sure, I guess. Machine Gun Noodles. When the difficulty spikes up and the song goes hyper speed, it's actually really chaotic.

3: Ichizu Samurai

Ishin Kiwami, "Saito Hajime"/Sakamoto Ryoma (Kiryu Kazuma), Ichizu Samurai, #114 7 Gaiden, "Joryu"/Kiryu Kazuma, Shin Ichizu Samurai, #87

This song is really funny and chaotic the first time through. The song and the button presses happen immediately with no time to prepare, and the video clip of real women dressed as courtesans plays also immediately. So the very first reaction is "what is even happening right now?" And the in-game Ryoma shows up from time to time in between the real courtesans, which is jarring. Especially when he pops up all of a sudden to sing "I-CHI-ZU SAMURAIIIIIIII" Hehehe. And the full song has the courtesans trying to charm him while he tries his best to resist. "S - Stop... stop it!"

And then it happens again in Gaiden, with Agent Joryu, who... um... where'd the suit go? I was dreading the possibility that in 7 Gaiden, the karaoke songs offered would be Tonight, where Kiryu sings about his dead brother who he can never see again, Hands, where he sings about his grandson who he can never see again, and a new one about Haruka, his adopted daughter who he can never see again. "Fortunately", the songs offered for Kiryu were Tonight, Hands, Baka Mitai, Sayonara Silent Night, and... this. It's a song that really doesn't belong, but... I don't care. It's hilarious. And much appreciated.

2: GET TO THE TOP!

4, Sawamura Haruka, GET TO THE TOP!, #46 4, various hostesses, GET TO THE TOP! Dead Souls, Majima Goro, GET TO THE TOP! - Remix OF THE END, #53 5, various hostesses, GET TO THE TOP!

This is a hostess song. There are many of them. There are also many hostess songs in the Yakuza games. So many that I don't even know who sings what because there are so damn many of them. They're around to bore and delay my 100% achievement struggles, and to drain my in-game money because going to a cabaret club over and over costs an arm and a leg. But upon successfully asking a hostess out on a date, you can take her to karaoke and she'll sing one of the hostess songs of the game.

In Premium Adventure of Yakuza 4, you can just take Haruka to a karaoke place and she'll sing this or Otomeiro My Life. So no hostess stuff necessary to hear the song.

When Haruka sings it, it's cute and nice. And... sadly, it's referred to in 5. After Kiryu gets kicked out of the orphanage, he lives as a taxi driver. And in the taxi customization, there's an option to play this song in the background during races. And Kiryu's comment is "Haruka used to sing this all the time." Which is so very sad since he's not allowed to see her anymore.

When the hostesses sing them... I don't know. I have no recollection. For reference, Yakuza 0 has 6 hostesses, Kiwami has 2, Kiwami 2 has... 7? And 3 has 10. 4 has 4? 5 has 4? 6 has 4, 7 Gaiden has like 5... I can't remember them all. Even though I had to max out the bonds with all of them. So only a very small handful of them are memorable to me. The rest have blended together.

And then Majima sings this song for some reason in a weird zombie spin-off game, and makes this song his own. Despite being the same, it's now completely different. It's now a Majima song. That's the reason why this song is in the #2 spot. How dare they hide this variant in a weird-ass zombie spin-off game.

Honorable Mention 1: Baka Mitai

The honorable mentions are for the karaoke songs that are almost everywhere and will most likely occur in every game from now on, but didn't make it into my top 10.

And as you can see, this song has appeared in almost every single game since the debut in 5. It was skipped in 6 and Kiwami 2, and... that's it.

The video usually (as in, all except Ishin) has the character sit at a bar, singing while drinking and looking at a picture of happier times in the past.

Even the picture is recurring. In Yakuza 0 (1988), Kiryu meets and befriends the Pocket Circuit Fighter. 17 years later, in Kiwami (2005), when Kiryu sings Baka Mitai, the picture he holds up is the one he had taken in 0 with the Fighter. They meet in Kiwami, but things aren't as happy as before. And then 11 years later, in 6 (2016), Kiryu meets him again in Hiroshima (where you see that the Fighter has gotten real old) and helps him rekindle his love for racing. And then in 7 Gaiden (2019), when Kiryu sings Baka Mitai, he holds up the picture he took with the Fighter during 6. Oh, where has the time gone, old friend? Hahaha. And then in 8, the Fighter looks at the picture from 0 as he reminisces about his old friend too. Aww.

Honorable Mention 2: Like a Butterfly

6, various hostesses (+ Kiryu Kazuma), #67 Kiwami 2, various hostesses (+ Kiryu Kazuma) 7, Kamataki Eri (+ Kasuga Ichiban) 7 Gaiden, Akame (+ "Joryu"/Kiryu Kazuma) 8, Seonhee (+ "Suzuki Taichi"/Kiryu Kazuma) 8, Seonhee (+ Kasuga Ichiban)

Butterfly Ga Gotoku. Another hostess song. There are 4 hostesses in 6. Some sing this, some sing others. I don't know who's who and who sings what. All I know is that this song has appeared in every single game since the debut in 6, and as hostesses no longer become date-able, the notable female characters end up singing this instead. ... One of the hostesses in 6 is an actual wrestler in Japan. Fascinating. I think she's one of the hostesses who sings this song? Hmm...

So the only real noteworthy thing about this song is that... Kiryu and Kasuga put on some real... noticeable sunglasses.

... What is that even?

1: Samurai Ondo

Ishin, Okita Soji (Majima Goro), Samurai Ondo, #115 Ishin, generic singer, Samurai Ondo - Original, #116

This entry shouldn't be a surprise. I already liked the original version, which plays when you go into the "karaoke" place and choose to "sing" this song without asking "Majima". And then when "Majima" sings it, once again, he completely transforms the song to be his own.

Despite forgetting the lyrics almost immediately, going completely off-beat and off-script, and incorporating what is basically a public service announcement, it feels normal in a very Majima-manner.

Now, in a very odd situation, I actually first heard this song in... Fallout 4, of all places. There was a mod that added a radio station that played Yakuza karaoke songs. And that's where I heard this for the first time. And I was real confused. "That sounds like Majima. But that's not a song that I know. Where is this from?" And then as Ishin Kiwami was around the corner, I checked the "karaoke" songs of the original Ishin, and there it was. Amazing.

... How dare they hide this in a samurai spin-off game. I mean, it makes sense, since it's in the title. But still. Couldn't this have been one of the karaoke options in Kiwami 2? Shin Samurai Ondo? Heh.

And the faster paced dance-song variant appears, also in Ishin, at the traditional dance hall. #121: Samurai Enbu. A "shame" that "Majima" doesn't show up to mess/improve this one. Hehe.

So there it is! 13 songs in a top 10 favorite listing. ... Well, it's a top 10 with an example, and 2 honorable mentions. So it's only technically cheating. And with that, another "to-make" post has been completed.

For the writing ask game:

7, 8, 12, 13, 14, 16, 17, 18, and 19

7: Luna, Kit, and Teddy are just essentially just me split up into three parts, so I guess they're all pretty similar to me, the one that's most like me out of the three of them is mostly just dependent on my current mood. If I had to pick one that was most similar to me based on how often I feel like I relate to them the most out of the three, I'd probably go with Kit

8: I have a lot of OCs, but the one who I relate to least is one who I can't really talk about that much because his existence is a spoiler. But simply put, he's a villain and has no redeeming qualities

12: Not that I can think of right now, but if I went back through all of my writing, I'm sure I'd find at least one. Oh wait, I actually just thought of one: Machine. I had to use it a lot in the 10th chapter to describe the slot machines, and while I tried to find other ways to describe them as well, the word machine ended up being used a lot

13: I actually don't think I've ever gotten any feedback on my writing (My memory isn't the best though, so sorry to anyone who actually did leave feedback if I forgot about you)

14: Nothing that I can really think of right now (That isn't obvious)

16: Most story ideas that I get for my OCs that aren't The E(gg)-Team or stories that give more backstory to them stem from me picking a Sonic game I like and inserting them into it (Like SatBK, Sonic at the Olympic Games, and Unleashed)

17: I actually don't have any projects that I'm actively writing right now other than The E(gg)-Team, just a bunch of stuff I plan out in my free time when I'm bored. I guess I can still just talk about one of these ideas though, so I'll do that. One of my planned stories is basically just a Yakuza game but in text form and with some of my OCs instead of human characters, which is kind of interesting since I did plan to make a Yakuza 0 AU at one point where all of the characters were replaced with both my OCs and canon Sonic characters

18: A piece of dialogue I really love is this excerpt of the conversation between Luna and Teddy near the end of Chapter 10:

“Okay, good for you that you figured out that mystery, but I’m not going to wait for you any longer. I’m not burning to death because of you,” Luna told him

“Nobody’s going to be burning to death because of me!” He quickly stated

It's way better in context, but I don't blame you if you haven't read through 18k words to get that context. I can't really put into words why I think it's so good, but I just really like it

19: One line that I think you should all keep in mind is "If I were you, I would appreciate all the kindness that was given to me. It's a horrible life to lead with nobody there for you," which Kit says in Chapter 8. This will be important later on

So, I cried. That's a given.

Also this might be the most overwhelmingly happy ending in the series so far, you know, if you're used to every entry ending with "KIRYU DIE?????"

Bonus points because this ending DID NOT immediately reveal that he lives! I know my intro here is all unserious and the like but genuinely, that does a lot for making the scene so much more impactful and it worked here even though I know he returns for Y6.

So, I'm gonna do this post like the last big post because there's too many thoughts to expel.

Timestamps as I rewatch so I can share my thoughts. Then a short conclusion because honestly? This game has taken all my words multiple times.

I just want to calmly and happily say my final piece at the end :)

0:39 - Spoiler, this ending SUCKS because it doesn't include a final rhythm battle for Haruka! Now I think I read somewhere that there's a member of that assassin clan she can dance battle as a final challenge but I clearly didn't do that right and missed out and that's beside the point- THERE'S NO RHYTHM GAMEPLAY IN THIS FINALE >:(

9:00 - I EARNED IT, I'M USING IT!

13:00 - Spoiler for later, Shinada doesn't get to say this from what I recall. Instead Baba gets a different wake up call, but that works out :)

17:00 - Not now, but this will come up, I offer to you my johns for what happens in the first boss fight. My eyes were dry as hell so I missed some QTEs which means I didn't get the flashiest stuff to happen. This actually happened at the end of Y4 also but I restarted just to capture good footage- not this time.

17:30 - MOUSE. MOUSE MOUSE, A LITTLE RAT, MOUSE. Love to see it.

19:00 - The audible sigh I let out when they played the same song I've heard like 40 times in my playthrough was palpable. I do dig the song! But there are what? 4 Idol songs? They really needed more or to not saturate their use so much :(

19:40 - I legitimately gasped and went "Oh no... of course it's you!" at Baba's role in this. It added a lot of weight to the way he practically begged Haruka not to show up.

20:50 - So here's the gist. Majima's plan didn't work out, we know that. Majima has a REALLY good line and motivator moment where he says he's following orders now to protect Haruka because she means more to Kiryu than anything (and that's how Majima rolls), Majima then reveals some shit which can be amounted to "I think you've gotten weak and wanted to protect you!!!!" which does ring slightly hollow since we saw Majima at a ridiculously low point earlier. So either his low point was him contemplating Saejima's survival chances, or his low point was sincere (it sure sounded it) and his worry over Saejima being weak was just also happening at the same time. I don't really mind either way to be honest, we beat him up. I fail some QTEs.

33:00 - Baba deciding not to fulfill his orders on his own accord is actually extremely important and good as hell. It shows that all this changed him and gave him the motivation to forge his own path- or rather it began to though he's overwhelmed with doubt. It's extremely good.

33:50 - The fact he intentionally leaves evidence shows how much doubt he has though, he's giving up entirely more than forging his own path, he's just refusing to follow the orders of another but hasn't found the strength to continue on his own. It's really good is all.

38:00 - This was the first cry I had beating the game x.x Shinada is just a phenomenally likeable character, and watching him accept where his life has gone and what it's meant to others is way more touching than I'd assume considering it's a tale of a baseball star.

40:50 - THIS WAS HYPE AS HELL AND LEAD TO MY SECOND CRY. THIS PRISON FAMILY HAS NO RIGHT BEING THIS ENDEARING. Also, more or less, they get to deliver the message Shinada was supposed to lol.

42:50 - THIRD AND BIG AS HELL CRY. SHINADA YOU FOOL, YOU'VE A FOUND FAMILY AFTER-ALL!!! I genuinely adore this moment so much is all. It's such a wonderful payoff for this loveable fool. After all the runnin' away he has a home.

43:36 - I love Shinada so much the silly fuck.

46:00 - I got a laugh out of Akiyama KICKING ASS in the news footage (didn't mention but the first brawl cutscene was rather lacking wasn't it?) and Kiryu just like... punches a guy. It's hilarious to me. Also you best believe- I UNLOCKED IT, I'M USING IT!!!

48:00 - Now this is a, well, it's a bad reveal. Like look, there is a metric ton of good going on in this finale- but the reveal that Aizawa is his son and is evil and is the final boss is just too much zero-build-up-payoff. It's the worst part. It's not like extremely detrimental or anything- like it doesn't take away from the good stuff- but it's just entirely uninteresting and bad. It makes Aizawa's interest in Morinaga bizarre and uninteresting since he got no payoff, he had buildup with Saejima and then in the final scenes he's just like "Yeah, Mori was nice but who gives a fuck I am the one who killed him (I think he said) and I aspire to be strong as fuck because all of YOU IDIOTS have FRIENDS and CHARISMA >:(" and like, who fuckin' cares bud.

52:00 - Now I'll more or less sum up all of Akiyama's payoff here. 1- I unlocked it so I'm gonna use it! 2- He offhandedly says he wants to be a legend in this town, which in Y4 he already was- he was a myth, a city mystery- but of course he means like Kiryu not the loch ness monster. 3- He gets to be a legend by being the only civilian (or person in general) the Omi would bow to. It's kind of not built up at all and is a bit lame, but to be honest Akiyama has a pretty bit part in this entire game. He's kinda just a convenient returning character with motivation to assist Kiryu and a career that allows motivation to get involved through Park. To be blunt, his part in the story is weak. I wish it was stronger. But it's inoffensive and he at least gets something- as minor as it is. Getting to say he's king of the world is something, you know?

56:00 - I will say that the build up of "Oh shit, these are Kanai's men!" and the reveal that "Oh shit! They are WATASE'S men and all the clans who the Tojo were seeking alliances with!" is a good one. Watase is a fine enough character which I bring up only because I was told he was a standout- but he wasn't for me. His scenes are great, his growth with Katsuya is nice, but he's barely in the game and really only exists to be betrayed and then to be like "I'm one of the good yakuza despite being a war-lusting one because being a good yakuza is just complicated enough to allow this overlap" which is interesting for sure, but I don't know. Unless he does stuff in the subsequent games I didn't catch much in this one. Maybe he does- I assume he runs the Omi now!

1:00:00 - I kinda summed it up but yeah. Here's the final boss, Aizawa, a character we were mislead on and who's motivation is empty as fuck. It's, whatever. It's not the good part of the ending. The good part is everything prior and directly after. Like his entire deal is anti-silver-spoon talking points but also he includes being charismatic or capable as silver spoon-isms??? He pretty much just wants to be leader because he's strong. He'd arguably be more interesting if he just said it that way.

1:11:00 - The lyrics to Dream are anything but subtle and I love them and I love Haruka. Sliding this in here- Majima gets no payoff >:( Park's dream is accomplished in seeing her star on the stage, but no Majima moment? No sight of him accepting her loss? Lame.

1:14:00 - I genuinely LOVE that Aizawa focuses in on Kiryu's gunshot wound. He still accepts it as a fair fight because Kiryu presents it as one, but even then he pays mind to it as you'd expect someone wanting to fight at their strongest would- he wants to fight Kiryu at his best and he's accepting this because Kiryu presents as his best even when wounded- it's pretty cool. Fight happens. It's fine stuff, flashy and fun. Still maybe the weakest final boss yet because he has no build up. I'd be the first to admit without looking it up I can't list every final boss thus far, but like, Nishi was built up, Mine was built up, Goda was built up, I just, in this moment, don't recall having a big "WHO THE FUCK, THIS MEANS NOTHING?" fight in yakuza and this is certainly one of those.

1:25:00 - I cried AGAIN. Haruka just hit me with a truck of emotion here is all.

1:41:15 - This is a beautifully shot, emotional, and tragic looking ending. Heck, at 1:43:00 I initially thought he was being awoken in a hospital bed and I was like "Heh, there's the old Kiryu dies fakeout!" but no! They hammer home, they go for broke, they give a TRAGIC AS FUCK bitter ending on top of an ending that's like 99% happy as fuck in terms of offering everyone involved hope for the future. This was a good end :)

So then, some overall thoughts I maybe didn't get out- I mean there's no way this post touches everything but I want to at least try to because I like sharin' the experience and what I got out of it.

The fighting styles were mighty uneven as far as strengths or fun factor. To be blunt,

Kiryu has an overpowered counter attack and heat mode and since heat mode is underwhelming as hell that means he has JUST a counter attack- his strikes don't really hit all that well considering the improvements other characters saw this time around, so he's a bit one note here.

Saejima feel even meatier than before, nothing particularly 'stands out' but the fact that he has super armor as long as he has heat is a pretty big factor in making him feel good to use.

Akiyama got the short end of the straw this time around. His new gimmick is the launch combos and they are... well... less than shit at least from what I could feel during gameplay. They don't hurt much, they burn heat like crazy, and they can MISS, all while being a move that targets just one enemy- has no counter to blocking or armor- and provides no armor in turn.

Despite not losing anything, he kinda got screwed.

(I'm lead to believe Akiyama is invulnerable during his aerial combos which my blurb in my finale post complained felt worthless and cited that as a reason.

If so then I was wrong but I still hold all my other complaints towards it, just not the 'it has no armor or invuln' bit assuming that's true.)

Shinada wins out for being unique and being a weapon oriented character that actually does well with weapons. Weapons have always been something I pretty much ignore in Yakuza and the series itself has always desperately tried to make them interesting with things like weapon skills, Kamiya works, and the like. But other than the god weapons like the golden gun weapons just never felt good to manage.

Using them, sure, that's fine, but managing them? Durability and skills and limited movesets and all that? Nah. But Shinada really does a lot to make them less shit! His innate abilities that raise durability a metric ton REALLY make weapons feel better to use with him- and his unique movesets with weapons are pretty damn good (mostly. The pipe/'normal one hander pole size object' moveset is worthless as heck, it regularly misses).

He's fun.

Revelations were a miss this time around for me. Since you couldn't have seen them if you tried on my blog let it be known- I ONLY got the quest related revelations for each character- which is to say- ONE rev per character.

Revelations in 5 are weapon based, and not just 'bat or pole or gun' or whatever- they are DISPOSABLE TEMPORARY weapon based.

What you are supposed to do is go to the specific place on the map where that one revelation weapon spawns, hope like hell you find an enemy, and wail on them like crazy. If you use a weapon x amount of times then you'll get a revelation according to the internet. This is beyond ridiculous and means a normal playthrough will get none of these, while a focused one will be bored out of their mind GRINDING to get these.

I did not bother.

Now.

Yakuza 5.

This might be my favorite Yakuza overall.

I still think 0 is probably the best overall for most people, it has the best style, it has from what I've experienced the best gameplay, it's story is tear jerking and exciting and fun.

But as a yakuza game overall, I really have to give it to 5 personally. Because 0 tried to work within its bounds- it made itself a great entry point to the series or a great addition to Yakuza 1 / Kiwami as background.

But 5 is building on 4 previous games and it does so fucking phenomenally.

There's something to be said about a later entry in a series gaining extra payoff thanks to multiple entries of build up and character depth and 5 fucking does it.

I just. It explores the motivation of some fan-favorites so well, it expands characters so fucking well, I know I've harped on about it but just Saejima- man! Saejima goes from a run of the mill "Decent" character to a fully fledged and explored entity! And I LOVE him!

And no he's not the only shining spot, like hell he is, but he's such a posterchild for what 5 does right in my eyes- take something that's already good and breath some life into it. Also I adore it's laser focus on a singular theme and all the ways it wanted to explore it.

Like. I think Kiwami and Zero take the cake for the most fun I've had " 'playing' Yakuza so far, but 5 takes the cake for the most fun I've had 'in general' like gameplay and me just thinking about it because there's so much to think on.

More time will tell as I compartmentalize my thoughts and perhaps forget some details as one does, but right this moment- this might be my favorite Yakuza game.

I love it.

Also, woot! I beat Y5 before Monhun Rise came out :D Now I can start that game without putting a story on hold!

...

Except I also told my sister that I'd start Omori after Y5. So I guess alongside monhun I'll be playing through a game with a hefty and wonderfully done story. Which is what I didn't want to do with Y5.

I just can't win, lol.

Overhaul rose from his seat, walking behind his desk to retrieve some keys, noticing Nanami was still seated.

“When I said ‘let’s be quick about it’ I thought it was implied that we’d both get up and leave. You can finish pouting when we get back.” She looked up at him, annoyed. He’d usually return the irritation, but realized he preferred this infinitely more than seeing her upset.

“You never miss a beat, huh? Let’s roll, bird brain.” She said in a huff, now marching towards the door.

“If anyone else spoke to me that way they’d be dead by now.”

“Well I’m not just anybody, now am I?” she responded, equal parts confident and oblivious.

“… No. You’re not.” He paused, unsure how to process the thought. Or was it a feeling? Shaking it off, he continued, “The car is this way.”

“R-right. Right behind you.” She stammered; grateful he was in front of her as she tried not to think too much about his response.

They continued through the base until arriving at the garage as she spotted a familiar, blacked-out car. They hopped in and began the drive to her place, Nanami glad to be seated in the front this time. It was silent except for the hum of the engine as Nanami stared out the window, becoming lost in thought. She’d decided to tell her work she’d be taking a last-minute vacation and to tell Hitomi she’d be too busy at work to make their date. Before she had time to wonder just how much more lying she’d have to do, they arrived. Exiting the car in silence, Overhaul followed close behind as they made their way up to her apartment. As she was getting her keys out of her purse, he moved in front of her, putting his hand out for them. He took a cautionary glance inside before letting her know it was ok to enter.

“You’ve got 10 minutes,” he warned.

“Bu—”

“10. Minutes.”

“Saying it slower is not going to make me mo-- ”

“9 minutes.”

“Uuggghhhhhh” She groaned dramatically, but briskly walked back to start packing. It was especially difficult considering Nanami was a notorious over-packer. Without fail, she brought enough outfits for a fashion show and packed underwear as though she’d shit her pants every day. Better safe than underwear-less~

“2 minutes.”

“Ok, your counting down is NOT helping.” She yelled to the other room as she finished packing, emerging from her room in a huff. Plopping the bags on the ground, she stood triumphantly, waiting for his response as his brows began to furrow.

“That is… not the correct amount of bags for two weeks away.”

“What are you the bag police?”

“You know that’s not a thing. Take half of the bags you have and let’s go. The more time we waste here, the more likely we are to run into them, again.”

“Fine.” She abandoned what could have easily been twenty pounds in luggage, hefting the others towards the door. “Wow, you’re not even going to help me?”

“No. You shouldn’t have packed so much if you weren’t able to carry it by yourself. Consider it your strength training.”

Groaning yet again, Nanami was reconsidering if it would really be so bad to be abducted by a different and possibly more polite yakuza.

The ride back was as uneventful as the first before the grumbling of Nanami’s stomach cut through the silence. She hadn’t been able to eat all day, having abandoned her plans for brunch with Hitomi earlier and spending the better part of the afternoon packing for an involuntary vacation. Her eyes widened in embarrassment as she became determined to keep them glued to the window. Through her periphery, Overhaul turned towards her as they had pulled up to a red light.

“Where should we stop?”

“What?”

“I haven’t eaten today, give me suggestions on where to go.”

Is he… trying to be,-- dare I say it—nice? Nanami thought both surprised and intrigued. Not wanting to waste the golden opportunity, she tried her best to play along,” Well, SudohBucks is pretty good.”

“SudohBucks? A frappuccino does not count as dinner.”

“Um, they don’t just serve coffee—they’ve got pastries and some pretty solid paninis.” His eyes narrowed as though he wasn’t fully convinced, “If you don’t like it we can always stop somewhere else, there’s plenty of other places nearby. So whadya say?”

“I’d say what the hell is a panini?”

“You don’t know what a—oh my gosh, well it’s a toasted sandwich—usually on Italian bread—but really you can put anything on it. They’re warm, flavorful, and packed all neat so the ingredients don’t spill all over the place.”

“They’re ‘neat’? Hmm...”

“Of course that’s what you got from my illustrious description...”

“You’ve convinced me.”

Finding the nearest store with a drive-thru, Nanami ordered for them, earning a hum of approval when she correctly guessed he’d like the chicken artichoke. Salty people enjoy salty things, who would’ve guessed. She thought before reaching into the bag for her sandwich.

“Don’t you dare eat in this car.”

“Eat in the—just who do you think I am?”

“Dr. Watanabe; you’ve got hands steady enough to suture a grape but will undoubtedly still find a way to spill panini all over my car.”

“Ok, firstly, it’s impressive how you can insult and compliment me at the same time. Secondly, thank you, but also kiss my ass. And lastly, I’m not some savage that would try eating in a car—the food smell just seeps into the leather. I’m simply checking if they got the order right.”

“… Close it as soon as you’re done.” He relented, rolling his eyes, eager to ignore the smug look on his passenger’s face.

Nanami 1, Overhaul 0 ~.

They drove past the spot where her car was parked, only to find it empty. “Where the hell is my car?”

“It’s trackable, we had to burn it.” He replied simply.

Her eyes shot wide as she turned to him, seriously considering fighting him then and there.

“That was a joke.”

“Stick to your day job.”

Ignoring her, they pulled into the garage, her car now there and the sun almost ready to set. Getting her bags from the trunk, he took the heaviest one before she could grab it. Too tired to fuss, she accepted the help as they made the long trek to… Where exactly am I going to stay, anyway… She hadn’t thought of it specifically before, only defaulting to the cell she was sure he’d made when he first tried to abduct her, except slightly more hospitable. Realistically, she knew it wouldn’t be a cell, but still hadn’t an inkling as to where they were going, the path they took ceasing to be familiar a couple turns ago. Just as she was about to ask, they came upon a set of stairs that resembled those at the main entrance, but she could tell they were different, the steps having much less wear on them. He paused a moment in front of her, but she couldn’t see his face to tell what he was thinking. After an audible exhale, he continued up the steps, opening the door at the top of the passage with a code he didn’t bother to hide this time.

The light was blinding as her eyes tried to adjust to the change. Blinking hard, she was now able to see a traditional home with minimalist, modern décor. It was cleaner than most operating rooms she’d seen and just as sterile. She would have assumed it was a model home no one had lived in before if not for the pair of familiar shoes in the doorway. Examining the room, she could tell they were in the kitchen and the secret passageway they came from had been in a large cabinet. On the island was a singular vase that had been repaired using kintsugi while the counters were clear, save for a kettle and tea bowl. Before she could look further, a glass door closed them into the space.

“Hold your breath.”

“Wha—” Just then a mist was blasted from all sides. She was about to panic, but she saw him standing there, relaxed as though this happened regularly. The mist stopped and the door opened once again as he casually took off his shoes and waltzed out the pseudo-cabinet. Finally connecting the dots, it hit her. “Is this… is this your house?”

“Yes, now take off your shoes or I’ll leave you in the silo.”

“You don’t have guests over often, do you?”

He turned to her, his finger hovering threateningly over what she assumed was the button to lock the cabinet door.

“Ok, ok. Just gimme a second.” She hurriedly took them off, placing them neatly next to his, the sight causing her heartbeat to quicken. She’d never stayed in a man’s house before, and the thought made her nervous. Don’t make it weird. Don’t make it weird. Don’t make it weird. She thought to herself, hoping to regain objectivity. Just lab partners being bros, staying in the same house for a couple weeks to avoid being kidnapped for a bounty. No big deal. As she continued her inner monologue, she glanced up to see he was close, a confused look on what she could see of his face.

“What is it?”

“You didn’t hear a word I said.”

“That I did not.”

Sighing he began walking out of the kitchen and down the hallway. Willing herself to move and not wanting to be stuck in the mini decontamination silo, she sheepishly followed, setting the food down on the kitchen counter. At the second-to-last door near the end of the hallway, he stopped, opening it and turning on the lights.

“This will be your room.” He said plainly, gently placing her bags on a bench near the closet.

Among the questions now racing through her head, a singular one stood out. “Ok, not to sound ungrateful, but why can’t I stay in a guest room in the main base? I mean I highly doubt having anybody in your house is pleasant for you.”

He paused thoughtfully before responding, “The distance from here to the main base is much farther than you think; the passageways run for miles. If there was an attack, you might be dead before I could reach you. Here, you’re a room away. Having anybody else in my house does repulse me… but as you said earlier, you don’t fall into the category of ‘just anybody.” They were looking at each other fully now, Nanami swallowing harshly at his last statement coupled with the fact that she was now alone with him, in his house. Before her heart could race any faster, he quickly continued, breaking the now too-intense eye contact, “You’re an ally. Strategically, being near makes the most sense as your offensive capabilities alone won’t be enough to fend off the reinforcements they’ll send. At any rate, I have a meeting to attend.”

She felt a small pang of disappointment at his response but was both unwilling and unprepared to address it. “Oh, I see. Makes total sense!” She said through a half-hearted, awkward laugh, “Very logical. Well, I’ll just settle in and uh look through some paperwork of my own. I’ll see you later then, partner!” Facepalming inwardly, she quickly took her bags, turning away from him to place her things on the bed. She kept her back turned, now very invested in unpacking.

After a couple seconds she could still feel him in the doorway and cautioned a glance over her shoulder to see what he was doing. She saw him attempt to begin a sentence but stopped, a conflicted look in his features as he turned away, leaving her alone with her thoughts. This is gonna be a long week.

(Oh, it’s gonna be long, I’m sorry, I added a TL;DR to the answers.)

The Fool: I feel like my most recent journey is mostly finding myself and solidifying who I am as a person, especially with interests, which happened two years ago. It’s mostly me finding my interests on my own and finding things that I’m good at and love to do. I reexplore things that I like since childhood and reflecting that on my characters. I also reflect back on some of the phases I had when I was 12-14, some of which are let’s just say made me closed minded, my metalhead elitist (while denying it) phase and “holier-than-thou” Catholic phase were the most prominent ones. While I cherish some good parts of those phases, I hated that I was so closed minded on those phases. My witchcraft phase is where I started to open up and embrace who I am as a person. It also made me realize that I shouldn’t give a shit to people that are there to tear me up. Last year is me embracing my identity as a nonbinary person and that made me happier with myself.

TL;DR: My most recent journey is to find myself and my own identity. I reexplore my childhood favorites and I have been through a bunch of phases, some of which are closed minded.

The Hierophant: I love to dance around and pretend that I’m a different character in a music video. The dances might not be accurate but hey, that makes me happy. The most recent one is 24 Hour Cinderella from Yakuza 0 which makes me happy. Relate to that is just pacing around when I was thinking, good exercise in my part lol. I also reenact to events that happened to my OCs sometimes, For now is Mary Watson exploring Strangerville. From time to time, I sometimes search tags for my favorite characters and reblog some if they are any (that’s how I found your fan art on Erwin).

TL;DR: Basically, pretending to be the characters I like and searching stuff that contains my favorite characters.

The Hermit (this question got me crying real good): I don’t know how to answer this one, I’m very sorry. I’m not good with my emotions and describing them. I would mostly bury them which is pretty bad. I don’t know, it’s just that I was told that my feelings don’t matter to my family and the time where I try to get in touch with my emotions is where I reach a boiling point and I release everything I was hiding. I try to open up with my emotions by writing them down on my characters or my ‘oh-so-lovely’ poems but I still have a long journey to go.

TL;DR: I’m not good with emotions in general but I’m trying my best.

3: Best game you’ve ever played? WEEEELLLL.......let me preface this with two things: one, i am a FAKE GAMER as in my laptop is not at all made for gaming, it’s piss poor, so a big chunk of games i’m interested in is because i watched a playthrough of them lol. i have a 3ds but only 3 games on it (animal crossing new leaf, tomodachi life, nintedogs & cats). second, i’m very bad at choosing favorites of things.....BUUUUT .....i choooooose, in no particular order, OFF, pigeonetics, elder scrolls oblivion, pathologic classic HD!! i’m more than likely forgetting a few though, so sorry about that

4: Worst game you’ve ever played? as i said above, cannot choose favorites, neither can i choose whatever the opposite of favorites is but...uhh, does lif even count as a game? like lif, the stupid little furry flash game i remember playing on some shady website. it was surprisingly very active with a BUNCH of people there but i kept dying like every 5 seconds....AWFUL

6: A game that’s changed you the most? WELL define Changed.....ummm aha first thing that comes to mind is OFF. it’s one of those things where you never knew you wanted something so fucking bad until you saw it--and it’s like that for me. i NEVER knew i loved that odd, surreal, colorful, “looks playful and simple in some parts but incredibly violent and unnerving in other parts” aesthetic til i played it. like aesthetically i love that game to BITS and something about it just stuck with me til the end of time.

later in life (meaning, past year or so) it changed me because it taught me a lesson about storytelling and creative endeavors. a very useful lesson. which is: things don’t really need to have a meaning. stories, art, music, writing, whatnot, while it CAN be deep and meaningful, while you CAN use it as a way to communicate with the world about all kinds of heartfelt things, it can also be...nothing, really.

once i, as usual, got ridiculously overwhelmingly sad about small things. specifically seeing other people around me come up with all kinds of deep and meaningful characters and stories, sometimes putting them into webcomics or writings of theirs, and they were all so well-thought out and detailed and what i envied most was people put a lot of themselves and their experiences into them, venting and coping through them, whilst also making these larger-than-life grandiose complex stories and worlds and so on and so forth.

it made me look at my own ideas and get mad/frustrated at how shallow they were. but then i remembered OFF and i felt better because Fun Fact, mortis ghost has a now-abandoned dA account and if you go through the comment section on his profile, he answers a lot of fan questions and he mentions several times that the game didn’t really have a “meaning”, it didn’t really have a “deeper story” or moral or anything, really. i’m paraphrasing this but i vividly remember him saying “i wanted to make a game, so i did”.

that made me feel a lot better because it made me realise that sometimes art--especially stories, in my case-- doesn’t NEED to be DEEP or have MEANING...sometimes it can just BE!!!! sometimes it really can just be all about AESTHETICS like who GIVES a shit if there’s a hidden meaning if you take the first letter of all of your characters’ names and put them backwards, sometimes all that matters is if they just VIBE with you y’know....

yume nikki is similar in this regard bc that game doesn’t have any story other than “collect egg” and yet it’s so impactful. that game doesn’t have a story or meaning it just IS........ :) GOD THATS SO LONG IM SORRY ABOUT THAT but yeah. funny violent ghostbusting baseball man is a game that changed me :)

7: A game you’ll never forget? OFF AGAIN LOL,,, it’s just so memorable because of how unique it is. visuals, soundtrack, story, everything is so memorable. unforgettable. oh god you can tell how much i love this damn game can’t you

8: Best soundtrack? yakuza 0, OFF, there is a picture (another game by mortis ghost, again composed by alias conrad coldwood who also composed OFF), pigeonetics (the entire soundtrack of which is here), jojo’s bizarre adventure all star battle and eyes of heaven, silent hill 2 & 3, undertale....probably forgetting more but all of these...earcandy

11: Hardest game you’ve played? i am a shitty gamer so this is Most games i’ve played lol!! but uhh..well you see. hardest game i remember playing as of recent is pathologic classic hd in which it’s...not only hard to understand what any character is saying at any given time lol but also, i don’t think it’s HARD it’s just...you need to focus. you REALLY need to fucking focus and pay attention in this game. so i wouldn’t say its HARD, but i’m only putting this here bc it’s in recent memory.

i say recent memory because the true answer is susceptible to “yeah, but now you’re older, it must not be so hard.” as in if i played it now i think i’d have a way easier time. but when i was around....10-12 years old i had several ps3 video game adaptations of animated movies and i had SUCH a fucking hard time with them. g-force, bolt and up in particular were fucking HARD. like genuinely, the hardest time i had EVER had in my live playing video games is tied to these three fucking games. g-force and bolt ESPECIALLY. one particular level in bolt took both me AND my sister around a year to fucking finish.

again, i was baby, so i bet i’d have a much easier time with them now that i’m 17. but for now, in my experience, bolt and g-force for the ps3 were harder than pathologic classic. i think icepick lodge should take a few notes for them for pathologic 2.

13: A game you were the most excited for when it wasn’t released yet? STREETS OF KAMUROCHO...i spent the entire day of its release anticipating its launch lol

14: A game you think would be cool if it had voice acting? hmm..most games i like and know about do have voice acting so i dunno....i guess it would’ve been kind of cool if morrowind had like, full proper voice acting. but i can understand why it only voice acted things like greetings and battle insults because GOD that game is SO...complicated...and as a result, the conversations are so lengthy and text-full. playing morrowind is really like a goddamn book! if it was voice acted i’m sure all that information would have to be shortened bc i know no one is going to fucking voice act two whole paragraphs

15: Which two games do you think would make an awesome crossover? pigeonetics and yakuza in which instead of being about the criminal underworld it’s about shady and unethical pigeon clubs, breeding, racing, etc etc...a lot of illegal shit does happen in the world of pigeons especially when it comes to racing; prized racers have been kidnapped and held for ransom before. and then there’s Avian Cucking: The Sport, where people breed the sexiest pigeons (horseman thief pouters), release them outside to seduce other people’s sexy pigeons, and bring them back and keep ‘em, drama ensues. will kiryu ever escape his past as a professional pigeon-napper, and find solace in his new life as a pigeon hobbyist? find out now by playing YACOOZA......

JOKES ASIDES i don’t know i really don’t....umm, pigeonetics and animal crossing somehow?? :O... like, instead of managing your own town it’s managing your own loft!...orrrr, the jojo games (all star battle & eyes of heaven) with yakuza, because i think they’re somewhat similar because they’re both haha Wacky Silly AND serious over the top fighty-fighting.....or maybe a crossover with OFF and discover my body, which, despite being an incredibly short and obscure indie game i still love to bits for what it’s worth. WAIT ANIMAL CROSSING AND MINECRAFT THAT WOULD FUCK SO HARD OH MY GOD

16: Character you’ve hated most? From what game? i can’t think of any character i like, HATE...with a burning passion.. there are a few i dislike or have a complicated relationship with though.. i’m not interested in the series anymore but ouma from drv3...i’ll admit that he is a bit fun sometimes, especially in the very early beginning he’s a likeable brat but as the game progresses he becomes more irritating than anything and i have an issue with him in regards to writing, despite the fact that i have never been awake in any english class ever lol. it’s too long to put in this already long post but i’ll keep it at that. if you like him, well, good for you for finding joy in something i couldn’t! but he just doesn’t do it for me.

AH I JUST REMEMBERED....MINE......FROM YAKUZA 3....maybe i’d change my mind if i watched a playthrough of y3 again, because i think you always absorb something better on your second watch (tho i honestly Dont have the energy to do that all over again, the yakuza games are too fucking long), but i really hate his writing. spoilers for y3 but, i think mine’s writing, alongside other things in the game, were super messy...and a big part of why i hate him is that not only is he one of those “could’ve had great potential but fell flat” sorta guys but also his love for daigo is seen as some fans as good gay rep and i?????/.............um....WELL let’s just say that, i think people nowadays will see any gay character ever in any circumstance and say it’s good gay rep just based off the fact that A Gay Character exists....he was Not, good gay rep imo....he was not, let alone, Good. .........

17: What game do you never tell people you play? can’t think of any games i wouldn’t tell people i play.. idk exactly what this question’s asking. does it mean what game you don’t tell ppl you play bc you’re embarrassed about it...? i’m not very embarrassed by any of them. the only thing that comes close, i guess, is uhh lioden and wolvden. i’ve only interacted with those communities a LITTLE TINY WEE BIT, yet of what i’ve seen it’s a goddamn dumpster fire and i’d never want to be associated with them lol

19: Which game do you think deserves a revival? i’m well aware it’ll never happen and that it’s more a wet dream than anything but...PT/silent hills..... on a more realistic/”could happen” note, PIGEONETICS!!!! SERIOUSLY, it’s an amazing game about amazing animals and it teaches genetics in a very simplified and efficient way!! genetics is SO hard for me to understand, i fucking hated studying it but this game really helped me understand how it works AND its super engaging and interesting!! HOWEVER, of all the pigeon genes we know of, only a handful were seen in pigeonetics and i’d LOVE a sequel that employs new game mechanics AND new genes!! i wanna learn about bronze and stencil genes! i wanna learn about phenotypes like grizzled and pied!!! genes like sooty and dirty!!! @ UNIVERSITY OF UTAH GENETICS DEPARTMENT PLEASE IM BEGIGNG YOU

20: What was the first video game you ever played? earliest memories of Gaming involves me at my aunt’s house playing two games: super mario brothers and some kind of trapeze game. i don’t remember anything else though

21: How old were you when you first played a video game? i can’t remember but i must’ve been REAL tiny.... 6-9 years, maybe??

22: If you could immerse yourself in any game for one day, which game would it be? What would you do? immerse myself meaning go into their world...? huh....on one hand i’d like to go in the world of yakuza 0 to play in the arcades and do whore related activities but i’d also love to go into the world of animal crossing (and i’m pretty sure i’d be some sort of generic dromaeosaurid in that game!!) and shop, chat with villagers, do chores for them, go fishing, bug hunting, eat delicious fucking food like the apples mangos peaches cherries etc etc.....OH AND FOSSIL HUNTING THAT’S THE BEST PART!! though it would definetly be a little weird, to be a little dinosaur and finding a fossil of a...little dinosaur....i guess the non-sentient species went extinct and the dinosaur i am is some kind of, descendant of a sapient non-avian dinosaur that survived the k-pg extinction event...oh but who cares all i want is a cool little ambulocetus fossil or something. and some cherry pie :)

26: Handheld or console? my old ps3 just went kaput one day years ago so i haven’t used it in years so i can’t compare well... but i’d say handheld, because it lets me like DO stuff more...would love to get a console one day, a ps4 maybe but i’m kinda worried it’ll make me stay in one room all day wasting away my time when there’s other stuff i can do, y’know? but something handheld like my 3ds, on the other hand...i can do stuff with it. i can take it to my room and play it between breaks i take as i clean the room and fold my clothes, i can watch something on the tv and play the game during ad breaks, i can take it outside too if it has charge to last me a while! so....handheld i guess

27: Has there ever been a moment that has made you cry? yakuza 0 and undertale in particular have ALMOST made me fucking bawl with many of its moments....yakuza 0 especially, after that Fucking Ending i had trouble sleeping because oh my fucking god. video game people SAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

29: Which is more important, gameplay or story? HMMM....well, if i were to play a game with a shitty story but really good and fun gameplay i’d probably continue playing it for the gameplay. but if i played a game with shitty gameplay but an interesting story, there is a chance i’d play it more for the sake of the story but also i might just quite and see the rest of the story on youtube or something. i’m more likely to go through a boring story for fun gameplay than go through boring gameplay for an interesting story, so i guess gameplay is more important to me....that is, WHEN i actually own and play a game as opposed to when i just watch someone play a game because i don’t own the game but wanna know abt the story lol

30: A game that hasn’t been localized in your country that you think should be localized? i have no idea how video game localization really works....but i assume localizing a game in india would mean something like, removing content according to cultural norm and also somehow translating it into the 22 official languages..? or just two or three language if it’s tied to a particular state, which seems way more doable. i honestly have no idea? i’ve never interacted w the indian gaming community that much to be honest, all i know of it is of the video games i’ve seen sold in some game stores and a few whispers about like solid snake or whoever from my school’s cafeteria....the most popular games here, to my knowledge, are those very streamable games like fortnite and PUBG and your call of duties and whatnot. those generic shooters. and even then, that honestly isn’t the “indian” gaming community bc this country is so FUCKHUGE, it’s just tamil nadu. one state.

soooo, according to what little i know of gaming interests in where i live, i don’t think any of the games i like should be localized here bc i don’t really think there’s an audience for it as far as i can tell :( maybe animal crossing? it’s a fun little games for all ages and i think it has a chance of becoming popular here, so maybe that is worth a shot! but i can’t think of any other game that i like that really has an audience here (other than Me lol)

1. FIRST NAME: i used to go by my middle name, nina, but now i go by pacifica or paci.

2. STRANGE FACT ABOUT YOURSELF: i have a bunch of weird ailments that honestly are just wild. like sometimes my nerves make me spasm or collapse or i’ll become hyperflexible. my kidneys decided they were lonely so they are... snuggled together... and i’ve had cancer a few times. it’s exhausting.

3. TOP THREE PHYSICAL THINGS YOU FIND ATTRACTIVE ON A PERSON: - smile / facial features. outside of aesthetics, you can tell if someone is superficial or genuine through the intensity of their smile, or if they’re fabricating their appearance or background. i wouldn’t want someone to pretend for me. i want them to be how they are. - personal care. i don’t have preferences on hair / grooming outside of being well-kempt. file your nails & clean them ( like if ur a mechanic or factory worker or other types of physical labor, i get it-- but like an office worker with black nails? ick ), brush/comb/finger detangle/style your hair, make sure your clothes are reasonably presentable... clean, like you actively tried to come up with an ensemble. - physique. not saying people need to be like 8 pack or straight out the gym. nor am i saying i need someone to be like mega massive or mega thin. but preferably someone who like... is comfortable in the skin they’re in, and cares about their body. at the least, cares about what goes in their body and how much their body does for them.

4. A FOOD YOU COULD EAT FOREVER AND NOT GET BORED OF: haribo snacks.

5. A FOOD YOU HATE: i cannot handle the smell of mustard or mayonnaise. i will literally walk out of a room.

7. WHAT DO YOU SLEEP IN: a sweater and panties tbh. i’ve turned into that basic single person in their 20s. if i’m cold i’ll throw on sweatpants too.

SERIOUS RELATIONSHIPS OR FLINGS: i vastly prefer serious relationships, but there’s got to be a lot of build up to it for me to pursue someone in that manner. that being said, idk why, apparently i seem unapproachable or intimidating, but i’ve always had to ask out the person i liked.... ask me out first, u fools. i’ve tried to do flings but like i always feel guilty afterward bc i’m not invested, i just pretend hoping maybe i’ll fool myself in the process and i don’t lmao. that being said, it’s been like over a year since i’ve last dated, and two years had passed between that partner and the previous one.

IF YOU COULD GO BACK IN THE PAST AND CHANGE ONE THING ABOUT YOUR LIFE, WOULD YOU AND WHAT WOULD IT BE: nothing. maybe switch my triple minor to an interdisciplinary double major because that sounds cooler in this point in my life. but other than that? i feel like i did well with the cards that were handed to me. they shaped me into who i am now. and now i’m trying to continue to be a person past me would be proud of. i want to live a life with little to no regrets. to pursue everything i can while i have the opportunity to.

10. ARE YOU AN AFFECTIONATE PERSON: physically, yes. emotionally, it depends. my coworkers are always either thrilled to see me or are like “ it’s paci being over the top cute. ” i love coming into the room to give hugs or do random acts of service or to shower someone with surprise gifts just to say i appreciate them. however, i can be emotionally distant at times and i don’t like to involve people into things. i still feel guilty on most occasions when i vent, even though i know it’s healthy to do. i feel like it’s not other people’s responsibility to deal with my problems or have to endure them, even if it’s as little involvement as listening. such an attitude isn’t great, but... at least i can recognize that now? lmao. u know. baby steps. i’m still learning to trust and let people in. when my former best friend broke my heart it really messed me up in a lot of ways.

11. A MOVIE YOU COULD WATCH OVER AND OVER AGAIN: i love pocahontas, mulan, princess and the frog, and peter pan starring mary martin. i’ve been watching that specific peter pan since like..... birth......... and it’s still one of my favorite films.

13. YOU HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO KEEP ANY ANIMAL AS A PET, WHAT DO YOU CHOOSE: a long-haired cat, preferably a tortoise color. i’ve always thought munchkin cats were the cutest. i’d want something that is as independent and self-sufficient as i am.

15. PIE OR CAKE: pie. i don’t eat nearly enough of it. kinda underrated in the pnw, i feel like? but in the midwest we loved pies... kinda miss that.

17. CELEBRITY CRUSH: shrugs? no one atm. i do not keep up with pop culture these days. can i count kyo from dir en grey? i’ve thought he was hot for the last 15 years and counting........ 14 y/o me was really like “ he’s the one ” too!!

IF YOU COULD TRAVEL ANYWHERE, WHERE WOULD YOU GO: i love visiting friends. and like... idk? japan is still interesting, as is italy and greece and jerusalem. but i don’t have like... a burning urge to go anywhere. i’d like to return to vietnam & cambodia at some point as well. people tell me melbourne is my kind of vibe, but... i’ll get there when i get there.

19. INTROVERT OR EXTROVERT: ambivert. though for all that i project in personality, i do take a lot of time to myself to kind of recharge, as you will.

20. DO YOU SCARE EASILY: i do. but i still like scary games bc i enjoy the thrill and chase. suspense is really cool-- gore is not, imo.

IPHONE OR ANDROID: android. i’ve been using samsung galaxy phones since like 2013 and i’m not going back now. i had an ipad once and........ i’m over that. but i’m not like gonna participate in the dumb android vs apple debate........ we’re adults and it’s 2020, c’mon now. put ur energy into something else.

DO YOU PLAY ANY VIDEO GAMES: y’all......... i wish i could be like ‘ i’m a gamer grl ’ but the truth is that i mainly collect games and say i’ll play them but it takes me a trillion years sfdgiohfgiohdf. my backlog is shameful. we don’t talk about that. that being said, i just took up ace attorney: spirit of justice this evening & i’ve been playing through kingdom hearts iii and yakuza 0 as of late.

DREAM JOB: to write poetry & creative nonfiction at my leisure dfogihdohg. travelling writer, sharing about cultures all over the world & the beauty of interaction. very whimsical, i know! i also love studying languages and culture...... so it’s no question writing, sociology, cultural anthropology and linguistics were/are my fields of study.

WHAT WOULD YOU DO WITH A MILLION DOLLARS: pay off my loans, throw like half of it in savings for it to grow, give some to my mum bc she deserves to live comfortably, and..... take some time off work to just relax and rediscover myself. while work does give me purpose, it also takes away from my creative pursuits so like... that blows.

25. FICTIONAL CHARACTER YOU HATE: it took me like 10 years for sorceress adel to stop giving me nightmares, so like. probably her. the pennywise energy was too strong. and on that note...... all clowns and clownlike energy should just burn. pennywise, saw. y’all got to go.

26. FANDOM THAT YOU WERE ONCE A PART OF BUT AREN’T ANY LONGER: final fantasy, ahaha. also metal gear. xeno like doesn’t have a place for it to gather and it’s ridonk small..... but i love xeno games. and i used to love watching sbfp but since they disbanded... it’s a sad world out there.
