The thing with gods and youkai in Touhou is that they do not have "biology". The physiology of a youkai or full-fledged god is three preternatural metaphors in a trench coat -- they are entirely supernatural entities, born from human fears and imagination. It's stories told around the campfire which has blossomed into mythology, plus "common sense" circa 1885 about how life works and exactly zero science, with a vague-gesture towards "feminine" in the case of the humanoids in Gensokyo. The cast of Touhou Project are "girlthings" in a very literal sense.

This even applies to different species of youkai. In ... Wild and Horned Hermit, I believe, a bunch of kappa effectively transformed into yamawaro after staying on dry land for too long and they just rolled with it, because "yamawaro are kappa that live on dry land". IIRC rhere's more than one folkloric story about foxes or tanuki becoming human after shapeshifting and deciding to live that life for the rest of their lives.

And no details have been given about how youkai reproduce, because ZUN just isn't into that kind of thing; however, the existence of half-human and half-youkai hyprids like Rinnosuke, and of sisters (the Komeijis) and of youkai-magicians who are born (Patchouli), suggests that humanoid youkai can have children the normal way. It Just Works.™ And since gods in Touhou canon are basically "human plus" in appearance outside of animal theming, it should be even more straightforward. Gender? I 'ardly know 'er! If you're "woman-shaped" you can get pregnant (bar folklore-compatible reasons why you couldn't, such as becasue you're dead). Birth happens normally, because that's "just common sense"; the child has whatever shape and set of features would be the most reasonable, in folkloric and "narrative" terms, via the path of least resistance. If the parents are the same "species", the child is also that species, and if one of the parents is a human, the result is just a hanyou (if the other parent is a youkai) or arahitogami (if the other is a god). IIRC Touhou doesn't specifically have examples where one parent is a god and the other is a youkai, but again, it should whatever is the most reasonable; there won't be any bizarre hybrids or whatever. Oh, the children would have a touch of both the monstrous and the divne, of course, but that's par for the course with regard to the blurred boundary between humans, gods, and youkai.

Therefore, Tsukasa and Sanae's hypothetical child would be normal.

You were having a time of your life. You had a plate of fried tofu, some good sake and new volume of BSD manga. You feet like a happy kitsune.

With your tails and ears visible, you were reading manga. Suddenly, you noticed, that your phone started to glow.

Two things happened.

First, a bunch of people appeared in your living room.

Second, you, for the first time in centuries, lost control and turned into a fox.

For one moment everything was fine. Then, you tried to set the intruders on fire. Perhaps, they were your fellow kitsunes, who decide to prank you.

Well, you didnt like it in one bit.

Time to teach them a lesson.

🐾 Okay, when they see you for the first time, they thought that you were wearing a costume. Like... You have fox ears and nine tails... You have to be wearing a costume.

🐾 But, when you transformed into a nine-tailed fox, because they startled you, when they appeared in your world, they realized, that you are, indeed, not a human. Especially, after you, an angry nine-tailed fox, tried to set them on fire.

🐾 After some explanations, fried tofu (thanks, Kyouka) and sake (thanks, Kaji) you calmed down and turned back into your half-fox half-human form.

🐾 And then, the time for an explanation from you arrived.

🐾 You told them, that your world has youkai, that were living near humans for thousands of years.

🐾 While youkai were hiding their existence from humans a secret, it doesn't mean, that youkais were hiding from humans.

🐾 With some cautious behaviour and with help from each other, youkais were secretly living among humans.

🐾 You quickly noticed, that BSD Cast looked guilty. They thought, that you will be uncomfortable with them knowing your secret. You assured them, that you are actually happy. You liked humans and were glad to have human friends who will accept you as a kitsune.

🐾 You bond with BSD Cast really quickly.

🐾 You, Dazai and Gogol formed a prankster group. You three became a worse nightmare for Kunikida, and, from time to time, for Dostoevsky.

🐾 You and Kyouka often eat tofu together.

🐾 You, Dazai, Fukuzawa, Verlaine, Rimbaud, Fukuchi, Kaji, Yosano, Oda, Ango and Taneda became drinking buddies.

🐾 Kenji want to meet other youkais. He talks with every animal he can find.

🐾 After characters get their costumes from the app (their costumes from their cards), you had a photoshoot.

Then let me introduce you to her destined wife, Urumi! A fisherwoman, a cow and a spider in one package, and a mom if you squint real hard; an excellent bargain! Yet she languishes only one spot above Nemuno. -Kisune: My #1 vote every time. The hobo queen of Gensokyo who helpfully cleans up all the bones people throw down the well. She lives in a giant bucket, how can you not vote for her? -Eika: A little darling of a jellyfish girl and organizational expert, criminally overlooked by the fandom. She's one of my favorite 7th votes, personally, she's just adorable. Someday she will be an architect without peer ;_; -Takane: The other kappa airsoft yamawaro! The fulfillment of a promise made in WaHH, she is a natural foil to the ever popular Nitori, with all the implications you want from that. Her focus on war games makes her a natural for fun Wile E. Coyote type weapons silliness, tragically overlooked. She needs more love. -Sannyo: The subject of scandal last year, Sannyo was one of the least voted for, and some well-meaning but misguided soul tried to stuff the ballots for her. Also let me know if I should scream about Jigoku Shoujo / Hell Girl main characters sometime because I have opinions. Yes, Wanyuudo is best boy; deal with it. Honeonna my beloved. Honneonna's two dozen onibi infesting her corpse my beloveds. Yamawaro is kinda meh and I feel his backstory ep didn't _quite_ justify his constant inclusion since je's otherwise a Kikuri interaction vehicle. Ichimokuren actually got character development over time which I was legir not expecting.

LET HONEONNA HAVE FRIENDS GODDAMMIT.

Kikuri is a necessary annoyance. Hellgirl herself is fascinating from a moral perspective and I really do want good things for her even if she's my most "meh" adjudication. Still think season 3 should have handled the posession better. And if one ever rewatches it, even if only a few eps chosen per season, it is indeed _very_ fun to see the progression in what the industry standard for animation was across the decades.

Btw shoutout to jinro soju peach. Absolutely delicious and smooth, yea dazzlingly smooth for a 13% alcohol punch.

Life updates!!! Odekake Kozame season 2 progressing smooooothly. Did y'all see the Aqualand tie-in?choukawaii! My pet leidyula floridiana slugs laid 18 eggys. I bought 2 zebra nerite snails in a 2-for-1 special a few days ago and they seem to be doing well, though one can hadly tell they're stripèd. They are refusing spirulina flakes tjough since our cashew tree keeps shedding cashew fruit into the pond, it's no wonder! Still doing overtime for the old job because it just feels nice to help. :) Discovered I can use excel to do dictionaries for conlangs: revolutionary. Thinking of wading into vowel harmony for my next project after I dominated consonant mutation with my last. And don't make fum of me!but! using minecraft plus a Buck list actually works well for implementing basic vocab, and even grammar when translating death messages/ subtitles. I'm on my fifth rewrite/redraw if the webcomic I want to start. AUGH it's frustrating because I want to lead into the story in the most succint and compelling way possible. Ah well, time and sleep mend all wounds. I just don't want to let down my friend, Metal.

I did Aya here but i'll also take the chance to throw in headcanon that she may have still have long ago-ingrained skills with a sword, but if she picked one up now, she's more likely to swing it like a club 🏌️‍♀️ Anyway as for Nitori...

General opinion/How much I care about them: our sworn friend, Nitori 😊 I distinctly remember there was a time where i was aware that Nitori was generally pretty popular but didnt care much for her myself? But thats far in the past because I definitely like her a lot now 😄 I'm happy she just gets to show up all the time, even if a lot of it is just brief cameos in the manga.

A ship I love: gonna play it safe by picking out Nitori/Marisa but it really is super cute how much common ground and shared curiosity/ambition they have with each other, and how maybe magic and engineering are basically the same interest. Nitori's more uptight than expected, so that leaves Marisa to be the one to bring more of the fun to whatever odd business or experiment they're doing.

(also bonus shoutout to nitori/momiji and anyone who wants to imagine the bubbling feelings that may rise from cozy shogi matches despite the various complications of their respective species/classes 🙂)

A non-romantic relationship that I love: it just occurred to me that i've never ever seen anybody do anything with Nitori and Kokoro's newfound partership from acof! i guess i understand since there were so many more interesting and exciting pairings going on in that game, but i thought their brief stint together, analysing and insulting everyone in their deadpan manner was fun.

But actually beside that, its not hard to believe that Nitori's pretty darn well-known across the whole of youkai mountain, and maybe just about every youkai and god has met her at least once? She's not known as Nitori, the Kappa of the Valley for nothing! So it makes me smile to think about her ongoing business relations and funny back-and-forths with the likes of Aya or Kanako.

My biggest headcanon about them: she is the inventor of the optical camoflage suit but the general opinion among anyone outside the kappa (and something the yamawaro especially like to poke fun at) is how inefficient it is compared to just dressing yourself in the colours of nature, and this annoys Nitori a lot...

An idea for a fanfiction I would like to write/read about them: she'll show up in some things i have planned for the far future... But for something about her specifically? I have to come up with one on the spot, hm.... I like to think she's more particular about that 'kappa are sworn friend of humans' thing than any other kappa (even if she usually just means doing business with them) so i'd like to see one of her attempts to be a helpful hero sort to them, even if she can't help but be awkward around humans.

Something that makes me think of them: sometimes when i manage to fix up my appliances or get them to work myself, i think 'wow i could be a kappa' 😐

Ability Cards? | Artist: Yorozu Kei

Story 1 Aya Shameimaru is a traditional crow tengu newspaper reporter. She seems to be thinking about the mysterious card she happened to find. Hatate Himekaidou is a modern-day crow tengu newspaper reporter. She seems to be pretty excited. Momiji Inubashiri is a white wolf tengu who patrols the Youkai Mountain. She seems cautious of these mysterious cards and suspects they might be dangerous.

Story 2 Apparently, these mysterious cards that feature various pictures give off a strange vibe. This might be because of the materials the cards are made of… Or perhaps it is because they feature pictures of somewhat familiar items and youkai, including a picture that looks like a supremely confident ice fairy.

Story 3 These mysterious cards are, in fact, the Ability Cards that were subject to an investigation to determine whether they were part of an incident. What would happen if someone found these cards after the disturbance calmed down? Say, for instance, on the Youkai Mountain where the yamawaro was selling them. The yamawaro could have dropped some cards that she didn't manage to sell. Various youkai dwell on this mountain, but the youkai most likely to find these cards the quickest would probably be the white wolf tengu who guard the mountain from intruders and the crow tengu reporters. What would these tengu do after finding the Ability Cards?

Story 4 "This card must hold a secret that will lead to a big scoop," said one of the crow tengu reporters. The other crow tengu reporter nodded in response and proceeded to take a commemorative photo of a card because she thought it looked kind of cute. The white wolf tengu, who was also holding a card, admonished the crow tengu for being so complacent with these potentially dangerous cards. Things started to get heated when they all continued to give differing opinions on the matter… but that's just an everyday occurrence for these three.

Story 5 The noisy debate came to a sudden stop when they all arrived at the same question. "So what exactly are these cards, anyway?" They could be a monumental discovery. Or maybe they are dangerous. Or perhaps they are simply toys that feature cute pictures. Someone laughed in amusement as they watched the tengu resume their bickering from afar. "Now, I guess I should start the next business venture…" The Great Tengu of the stars muttered to herself as she flew away.

Whether that's near your future place, or near a workspace or somewhere else you frequent- try finding places that make you feel cozy and comfortable. "I sometimes think back to an old case I had with the doll on Nameless Hill. Where I offered her a soapbox about her whole 'doll liberation' thing. The results were as varied as they were catastrophic. Humans were devastated and tried to get their old dolls back, even if they got poisoned, some kids felt scared to let things go because they didn’t want to hurt them or get hurt if they became tsukumogami, some relived nice times, some painful scars… I got into a bunch of trouble up top for it. And Miss Melancholy wasn't happy because both doll and human felt chained to each other…

But oddly enough, the one that fixed the issue was the Misfortune Goddess. She wanted to try 'update' the old Nagashi festival, since the yamawaro were getting frustrated that dolls kept stockpiling- which, yeah- if I was a doll I'd be sad about if I got chucked in a river. So…Hina suggested 'recycling' that misfortune into fortune, transferring the memories and care you felt to another child- who would make something special with that doll, to so on and so forth. Thanking it for the time and company that it occupied, allowing a civil dismissal, and not feeling all gloomy and weighty.

…Miss Melancholy hated it at first. She thought it was just 'shoving the problem onto someone else- and why am I seen as a problem anyway-' but…seeing a girl get an older doll from an elder, seeing the two of them stitch new clothes for her and repaint her faded eyes…I never knew dolls could cry but…yeah. And writing that article with Kagiyama's assistance…yes, it truly was one of my prouder moments as a journalist. …It really was, and I yearn for another masterpiece like that…ah-"

"I'm getting off track here, but I mean that everyone has their own thoughts, feelings and journey about change- and it's going to take some time, even if you know the 'perfect' way to handle it. Be patient with yourself, that's the one thing you'll always be travelling with- ahaha~ But being able to find little gaps of happiness, a fantastical scoop anywhere you go- even if it's a lone autumn leaf on the road- you'll find many more homes to report to!"
