Okay, so before the mcu decided to make them adoptive siblings, the comics had them as flat out rivals. Yelena was obsessed with Natasha, she wanted to be her and prove she was better. It felt more enemies-to-lovers like a lot of classic parralel hero/villian compared to how they're handled in the films and comics now

Welcome to the Problematic MCU Ship Tournament!

This blog will pit 64 different pairings against one another. All of them are in some way “problematic”- some feature a minor and an adult, others feature incestuous pairings, others still simply have questionable or potentially abusive dynamics. Many ships combine elements of more than one.

Each day, 4 polls will be posted pitting two different ships together (for a total of 8 ships per day). You are free to vote in as many or as few of these polls as you’d like.

This blog is explicitly pro-ship and anti-censorship, and obviously features dark themes. If this is a point of discomfort for you, you are free to block this blog, I don’t bite. Hate towards anyone (and anything unreasonably rude about ships or characters) will not be published and users that send it will be blocked. Nothing explicit will be posted to this blog, regardless of the ship, so minors are free to interact if they so wish.

The bracket below shows all the ships that will be posted, as well as their first opponent. After the first round has been completed, the diagram will be updated and all of the winning ships will be pitted against one another. You can also find a typed list of all ships under the cut, for users that can’t or don’t want to read my terrible handwriting.

yelenat hours. i don’t even have anything to say about them bc the comics already said it. you want to kill me. you want to be me. (unstated: you want to fuck me.) natasha sees this bright determined but naive girl and feels this ache in her chest, a desire to protect her, to give yelena a chance she never got, and then she goes and uses the most cruel brutal methods possible to try to save her. how did it feel for natasha to be in yelena’s body? a body not yet beyond redemption? did she savor it?

They’re both dynamics that rely heavily on positioning the “villain” as an alternative version of the hero. Like Yelena is Nat before she’s broken away to decide her own fate, or, if you ask Yelena, she’s the better, upgraded version of Nat. And Faith is Buffy without a support system, or, if you ask Faith, she’s the cooler, less-rule-bound version of Buffy. Each member of the dynamic makes the other one question who they are.

There’s some interesting stuff going on with sexuality in each pairing. As you know, Buffy S3 is pretty interesting with its use of purity versus expressions of sexuality and how that lines up with good and evil, so Fuffy’s got a lot going on there with how both of them are like sexual beings who are trying to figure out how to express that. I would say Yelenat on the other hand has them both feeling really disconnected from their sexuality. Like Natasha is a femme fatale for sure, while Yelena is more “asexual” (ah, Greyson’s much discussed comment), but both of them are processing their sexuality through the lens of how to be a good spy.

And I think part of the difference there is genre and part of it is age. Fuffy is from what is essentially a teen drama with fantasy elements, while Yelenat is from what is essentially a spy story with superhero elements. And teen drama is all about expressing sexuality and managing sexuality, while spy stories are all about repressing all emotions in the name of a greater good that leaves you feeling empty.

I think the biggest difference for me between Yelenat and Fuffy is that Yelenat has a definite age/experience difference. Fuffy feels like they’re equals - Faith has been a slayer for less time, but it doesn’t necessarily feel that way, and they’re approximately the same age (I actually always imagine Faith as older, but I don’t know if that’s just bc of how she acts). Nat and Yelena have a generation gap — Nat is 50s USSR, while Yelena is turn of the millennium Russia. While Buffy and Faith’s “we are the same” is because they are on the same level, Yelena and Nat’s “we are the same” is about how these things always come around again. Yelena is the newer and shinier model of Nat!!!

Anyway. Love an enemy who teaches the hero about herself because they are the same!! Love it when that enemy also does not know what to do with the fact that they are the same. What if we were different versions of the same character with different sexual expressions that were really reflective of the same core desires and we tried to kill each other. And we were both girls.
